Bui, Long. "Heteroglossia of History." Journal of Vietnamese Studies 14, no. 4 (2019): 1–39. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/vs.2019.14.4.1.

Full text
Abstract:
This article considers state-funded films in contemporary Vietnam and the legacy of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), which fell to communist forces in 1975. From a close reading of films produced on the thirtieth anniversary of the end of the war, the article deciphers complicated meanings about national identity, history, and gender. In this new political economic context, the possibilities for remembering the southern regime—including its people and veterans—remains open and closed. Through the framework of heteroglossia of history, the co-presence of competing viewpoints within cinematic texts points to the complexity of an ever-changing Vietnam.

Abstract:
The famous writer and revolutionary Nhất Linh (Nguyễn Tường Tam) committed suicide on July 7, 1963, in protest against Ngô Đình Diệm, the first president of the Republic of Vietnam (RVN, or South Vietnam). Although largely ignored by Western scholars, the suicide was a major catalyst for the growing resistance to Ngô Đình Diệm and contributed to a deeper transformation of Vietnamese political culture. Even decades after the collapse of the RVN, the event remains central to the historical memory of the Vietnamese diaspora.

Full text
Abstract:
The article uses Derrida's spectrality to look at magical realism in South Vietnamese and diasporic literature in Vietnamese. Diasporic literature has been said to be either a simple extension of literature from the Republic of Vietnam or a drastic break, with its prevalent use of magic. The article argues instead that the very disruption of the history of the South is the creative force behind both. It is the death of the South foretold that animated Republican writing. And it is the death of the South that forces the symbolization of history in the new global economic context of diasporic fiction.

It examines the selection of Van Cao's "Tiêên quâân ca" [Advancing Army Song] and the various alternatives that existed during Vietnam's unsettled twentieth century history. The meaning of the national anthem is also compared with an earlier music of the state, the ritual music of the court.

Abstract:
An engaged intellectual, Paul Mus drew upon his affective memory, his lived experiences, and his colonial past to provide a lucid explanation of the most inexplicable. His most famous work on Vietnam, Vietnam: A Sociology of War, coincided with the debut of the war of decolonization in Indochina. It reflected his obsession with understanding why and how this divisive conflict between the French and the Vietnamese was not only a political and international one, but also a social, cultural and human one. In this essay, I attempt to cast new light on his exceptional lucidity during the Franco-Vietnamese War.

Abstract:
Anthropological research on Vietnam has undergone an unparalleled growth in the past two decades, thanks to the relatively easier access to Vietnam for fieldwork and the fascination of many researchers with Vietnam's profound economic and sociocultural changes in the past half a century. Fieldwork in Vietnam, however, remains heavily circumscribed. Our understanding of the interplay of global forces and of the state and local dynamics in shaping social and ideological structure, practice, and historical events will be further enhanced by more collaboration among anthropologists working on Vietnam, as well as by more systematic comparative research in different Vietnamese regions and localities.

Abstract:
Since 1945, quan họ folksong has undergone increased institutionalization and professionalization. This article traces the history of those changes in the context of the relationship between local and national representations of quan họ. It also examines how local discourses on quan họ are constructed in relation to cultural restoration and commercialization. I focus on Diềm Village, Bắc Ninh Province, seen by locals and provincial and national officials as particularly representative of quan họ. Diềm has a strong sense of its own history, translating into local pride and awareness of the larger significance of representing its own traditions.

Abstract:
The historiography of women in Vietnamese history has long been complicated by cultural and political agendas, as well as problematic and at times limited sources. This state of the field essay surveys the historiographical landscape to highlight existing representations of women’s roles in Vietnamese history, and assesses the benefits and limitations of these depictions. I show that approaches to the study of women that consider them through the lenses of politics, law, and literature each show promise, but also obscure important dimensions of the larger story. I conclude by suggesting strategies for new approaches and interpretive frameworks for future research.

Abstract:
The Nôm Preservation Foundation recently made the libraries of two Buddhist temples near Hà Nội available in digitized form. The resulting composite temple collection allows us to pose questions about the history of the book in Vietnam. The history of the book in Vietnam must be understood from an interregional perspective. The availability of relatively inexpensive Chinese books influenced what was worthwhile to print locally. At the same time, even books with the same title are remarkably diverse in terms of content, medium, and annotation. A close look at individual books can show us what and how people read.
