Abstract:
Geometric performance parameters of three-point hitch system of a most sold model of a 2-wheel drive Indian tractor were determined by generating the path of upper and lower hitch points by kinematic linkage analysis. At various locations of pivot point of upper link and adjustments in the length of lift rods, hitch linkage system of the tractor fulfilled all the requirements specified by the standards for category-I and II hitches. An insight into the kinematic linkage analysis revealed that the hitch linkage of the selected tractor is the most suitable for operations with soil working implements. Attachment of upper link to the topmost pivot point reduced the change in orientation of implement during lifting and ensured better weight transfer from implement to the rear axle of tractor. The kinematic linkage analysis has the potential to identify the best settings of the hitch linkage system for the effective utilization of tractor power during various farm operations.

Abstract:
This paper presents a field experiment designed to test and evaluate two functionally different trailer hitches, conventional and newly designed, for driving effectiveness and safety. The evaluation was performed using three different approaches. The first used subjective evaluation obtained through subject questionnaire. The second involved estimating the strength required for the control of steering wheel using electromyogram (EMG). The third involved monitoring the extent of the oscillations of the steering system of the experimental car. The independent variables were the type of hitch, driving pattern and the trailer load. Each of the six subjects participated in 24 driving runs in the experiment. The results showed that the new trailer hitch provides greater driving effectiveness and safety than the conventional trailer hitch.

Abstract:
Introduction. With arthroscopic techniques being used, the importanceof knot tying has been examined. Previous literaturehas examined the use of reversing half-hitches on alternatingposts (RHAPs) on knot security. Separately, there has been researchregarding different suture materials commonly used inthe operating room. The specific aim of this study was to validatethe effect of different stacked half-hitch configuration anddifferent braided suture materials on arthroscopic knot integrity. Methods. Three different suture materials tied withfive different RHAPs in arthroscopic knots were compared.A single load-to-failure test was performed andthe mean ultimate clinical failure load was obtained. Results. Significant knot holding strength improvement wasfound when one half-hitch was reversed as compared to baselineknot. When two of the half-hitches were reversed, therewas a greater improvement with all knots having a mean ultimateclinical failure load greater than 150 newtons (N). Comparisonof the suture materials demonstrated a higher meanultimate clinical failure load when Force Fiber® was used andat least one half-hitch was reversed. Knots tied with eitherForce Fiber® or Orthocord® showed 0% chance of knot slippagewhile knots tied with FiberWire® or braided fishing linehad about 10 and 30% knot slippage chances, respectively. Conclusion. A significant effect was observed in regards to bothstacked half-hitch configuration and suture materials used onknot loop and knot security. Caution should be used with tyingthree RHAPs in arthroscopic surgery, particularly witha standard knot pusher and arthroscopic cannulas. The findingsof this study indicated the importance of three RHAPsin performing arthroscopic knot tying and provided evidenceregarding discrepancies of maximum clinical failure loads observedbetween orthopaedic surgeons, thereby leading to bettersurgical outcomes in the future. Abstract:
Aim. To describe a new technique of uterine manipulation in laparoscopic management of pelvic cancers.Material and Methods. We used a novel uterine hitch technique in 23 patients from May 2008 to October 2008. These patients underwent pelvic oncologic surgery including laparoscopic radical hysterectomy (n=7), laparoscopic anterior resection (n=4), laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection (n=3), laparoscopic posterior exenteration (n=4), or laparoscopic anterior exenteration (n=5). The uterus was hitched to the anterior abdominal.wall by either a single suture in the fundus or by sutures through the round ligaments.Results. The uterine hitch technique was successfully accomplished in all procedures. It was performed in less than 5 minutes in all cases. It obviated the need for vaginal manipulation. An extra port for retraction could be avoided. There were no intraoperative complications.Conclusion. A practical, cheap and reproducible method for uterine manipulation, during pelvic oncologic surgery is described. It improves the stability of the uterus and also obviates the need for keeping an additional assistant for vaginal manipulation in any of the procedures.

Abstract:
We document the dissociation of preserved calculation skills in a patient with impaired auditory short-term memory. The patient (MRF) had a memory span of three digits. Furthermore, he showed rapid decrement in performance of single digits and letters with both auditory and visual presentation in the Brown-Peterson forgetting task. Analysis of his calculation skills revealed a normal ability to solve auditorily presented multidigit addition and subtraction problems such as 173 + 68 and to execute the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task (Sampson, 1956, 1958; Gronwall, 1977). In addition, his performance on other tests, including arithmetic manipulation of natural numbers, decimals and fractions, approximation, magnitude, ratio, and percentage, appeared to be normal (Hitch, 1978b). It is argued that these findings require a revision of Baddeley and Hitch's (1974) concept of the function of working memory.

We define semistable generalized parabolic Hitchin pairs (GPH) on a disjoint union [Formula: see text] of integral smooth curves and construct their moduli spaces. We define a Hitchin map on the moduli space of GPH and show that it is a proper map. We construct moduli spaces of semistable Hitchin pairs on a reducible projective curve [Formula: see text]. When [Formula: see text] is the normalization of [Formula: see text], we give a birational morphism [Formula: see text] from the moduli space [Formula: see text] of good GPH on [Formula: see text] to the moduli space [Formula: see text] of Hitchin pairs on [Formula: see text] and show that the Hitchin map on [Formula: see text] induces a proper Hitchin map on [Formula: see text]. We determine the fibers of the Hitchin maps. We study the relationship between representations of the (topological) fundamental group of [Formula: see text] and Higgs bundles on [Formula: see text]. We show that if all the irreducible components of [Formula: see text] are smooth, then the Hitchin map is defined on the entire moduli space [Formula: see text].

We identify dglas that control infinitesimal deformations of the pairs (manifold, Higgs bundle) and of Hitchin pairs. As a consequence, we recover known descriptions of first order deformations and we refine known results on obstructions. Secondly we prove that the Hitchin map is induced by a natural L∞-morphism and, by standard facts about L∞-algebras, we obtain new conditions on obstructions to deform Hitchin pairs.

Abstract:
This paper is about geometric quantization of the Hitchin system. We quantize a Kahler form on the Hitchin moduli space (which is half the first Kahler form defined by Hitchin) by considering the Quillen bundle as the prequantum line bundle and modifying the Quillen metric using the Higgs field so that the curvature is proportional to the Kahler form. We show that this Kahler form is integral and the Quillen bundle descends as a prequantum line bundle on the moduli space. It is holomorphic and hence one can take holomorphic square integrable sections as the Hilbert space of quantization of the Hitchin moduli space.

Abstract:
In 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges. Although I concur that same-sex couples should have the right to marry if anyone does, I argue that civil marriage is an unjust institution. By examining the claims employed in the majority opinion, I expose the Court’s romanticized, patriarchal view of marriage. I critique four central claims: (1) that marriage is central to individual autonomy and liberty; (2) that civil marriage is uniquely valuable; (3) that marriage “safeguards” children and families; and (4) that marriage is fundamental to civil society.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to present a proof of the Hitchin-Thorpe and Miyaoka-Yau inequalities. First we provide an orthogonal decomposition for the curvature tensor, and then we show how the curvature operator can be defined from the curvature tensor. In order to fulfill the proposed objective, we prove the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem in dimension 4, to do this we use a result due Allendoerfer and we present an integral formula for the Euler characteristic computation on a Riemannian 4-manifold. Furthermore, we define the concept of signature in a Riemannian manifold e we exhibit an integral formula for the achievement of this object, for this we use the Hirzebruch Signature Theorem in di- mension 4 and the Chern-Weil Theory which provides us a connection between algebraic topology and differential geometry. Finally, we show how the earlier formulas can be used in the demonstration of the initial inequalities.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the study of the geometry and derived categories associated to the moduli problems of local systems and Higgs bundles in positive characteristic. As a cornerstone of our investigation, we establish a local system analogue of the BNR correspondence for Higgs bundles. This result (Proposition 4.3.1) relates flat connections to certain modules of an Azumaya algebra on the family of spectral curves. We prove properness over the semistable locus of the Hitchin map for local systems introduced by Laszlo–Pauly (Theorem 4.4.1). Moreover, we show that with respect to this Hitchin map, the moduli stack of local systems is étale locally equivalent to the moduli stack of Higgs bundles (Theorem 4.6.3) (with or without stability conditions). Subsequently, we study two-dimensional examples of moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles and local systems (Theorem 5.2.1), given by equivariant Hilbert schemes of cotangent bundles of elliptic curves. Furthermore, the Hilbert schemes of points of these surfaces are equivalent to moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles, respectively local systems (Theorem 5.3.1). The proof for local systems in positive characteristic relies on the properness results for the Hitchin fibration established earlier. The Autoduality Conjecture of Donagi–Pantev follows from Bridgeland–King–Reid’s McKay equivalence in these examples. The last chapter of this thesis is concerned with the con- struction of derived equivalences, resembling a Geometric Langlands Correspondence in positive characteristic, generalizing work of Bezrukavnikov–Braverman. Away from finitely many primes, we show that over the locus of integral spectral curves, the derived category of coherent sheaves on the stack of local systems is equivalent to a derived category of coherent D-modules on the stack of vector bundles. We conclude by establishing the Hecke eigenproperty of Arinkin’s autoduality and thereby of the Geometric Langlands equivalence in positive characteristic.

Brownsell, Wendy Joan. "Middle Pleistocene till lithostratigraphy in south Bedfordshire and the Hitchin Gap." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/3762.

Full text
Abstract:
A revised lithostratigraphy and glacial history of north Hertfordshire and south Bedfordshire is based upon detailed textural data in the clay to fine gravel fraction, carbonate content, small clast lithological data and macrofabrics, derived from laboratory and field analyses of tills from 30 sites. These include four deep boreholes sunk within the Hitchin Gap. A range of statistical procedures was used, including multivariate analysis of the petrographic properties, enabling the identification of tills from two separate incursions into the Gap. A further till-type was identified in south Bedfordshire indicating an ice advance from the northwest/NNW extending at least as far east as Milton Bryan. Statistical comparison with tills in the neighbouring Vale of St. Albans suggested the presence of the Ware Member till within the Gap. Two hypotheses are suggested to explain variations in lithological content of tills north of the Chalk scarp. The first envisages ice entering the study area along the different trajectories suggested by Fish and Whiteman (2001). During the early part of the glaciation, ice reaching the west of the study area would approach from the north, crossing a shorter distance over Chalk bedrock and collecting less chalk and flint than ice moving into the eastern part of the study area. The second hypothesis invokes an incursion of ice from a northwest - NNW direction into the west of the study area, depositing a chalk-free till. This is subsequently assimilated by ice from the northeast, resulting in the final deposition of a homogeneous mixture of debris from the two advances, with a lower chalk content than tills found to the east. The outcome of either of these scenarios is a till with a low acid-soluble content and low flint/quartz ratio in the west of the study area, as found during this work. Within the Hitchin Gap, a lobe of ice, probably an early part of the northeasterly advance, deposited a lower till. This is considered to be earlier than the Ware Member till and has more variable lithological characteristics and a finer matrix that the higher tills. The latter are mainly melt-out, flow or slumped tills with occasional instances of lodgement and deformation. They represent in situ wasting of dead ice within the Gap. Surface tills in the Gap form a continuum with tills to the north and comprise mainly deformation tills, deposited by the final northeasterly re-advance of ice responsible for widespread coverage of the region, with the exception of the Chiltern Hills southwest of Hitchin. No evidence is found of more than one lithostratigraphic unit of till outside the Hitchin Gap.

Abstract:
A computer code, HITCAN (HIgh Temperature Composite ANalyzer) has been developed to analyze/design hot metal matrix composite structures. HITCAN is a general purpose code for predicting the global structural and local stress-strain response of multilayered (arbitrarily oriented) metal matrix structures both at the constituent (fiber, matrix, and interphase) and the structure level and including the fabrication process effects. The thermomechanical properties of the constituents are considered to be nonlinearly dependent on several parameters including temperature, stress, and stress rate. The computational procedure employs an incremental iterative nonlinear approach utilizing a multifactor-interaction material behavior model, i.e., the material properties are expressed in terms of a product of several factors that affect the properties. HITCAN structural analysis capabilities (static, load stepping - a multistep static analysis with material properties updated at each step-modal, and buckling) for cooled hot structures are demonstrated through a specific example problem.

Abstract:
This paper describes one example of an adjustable gooseneck trailer hitch assembly that was assigned as a senior capstone design project course at Kettering University, Flint, Michigan, USA to carry out their work from concept to testing phases of a real prototype – in short, following “Theory meets practice” concept. Typically at most other engineering colleges, students complete their capstone projects in one year, while at Kettering University, the students complete their capstone courses in one academic term that lasts only about 11 weeks. Using math and advanced Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools for analysis is expected. Three different groups of students enrolled in three separate courses over 3 academic terms developed two different trailer hitch devices. The first gooseneck hitch system briefly described here was the effort of a group of four students of the capstone course. They designed a manually adjustable device. However, due to time constraints, their fabricated device ended up being a rigid frame. These students carried out all the different tasks of the project more or less equitably. The second trailer hitch system described in this paper was the effort of a single student of the capstone course who designed and fabricated a compliant (adjustable) hitch system. However, due to time constraints, detailed finite element analysis (FEA) or testing of the device could not be done. A third group of two students enrolled in Applied Finite Element Analysis course in another academic term chose the compliant hitch design carried by the single student for their final class project, and attempted analysis by MatLab and FEA. Preliminary results obtained for both of these gooseneck trailer hitch systems are presented and discussed briefly in the paper. Majority of the capstone course projects carried out at Kettering University represent uniqueness in terms of completing them in one academic term.
