Abstract:
A Glimpse into the Religious Studies of Hjalmar Söderberg While the Swedish writer Hjalmar Söderberg (1869–1941) gained a worldwide reputation with his fiction, his later studies in the history of religion, with their discussions of daring reconstructions and interpretations of Biblical events, are more obscure. Of his three monographs on religious history, the paper focuses on his début, The Fire of Yahweh (Jahves eld, 1918). The key thesis about the story of Moses as proposed by Markel, the protagonist, claims that the supernatural events in the Book of Exodus which took place on and at the foot of the mountain, and were witnessed by the Israelite crowd from a distance, were in fact an elaborate and spectacular form of pre-Jewish worship in the area. According to Markel, the fire, smoke and thunder accompanying God’s appearances in the Bible were simply a spectacle for the crowd, and these ‘special effects’ might well have been produced by Moses and his successors through gunpowder. The final part of the paper outlines Söderberg’s immersion in his time and in the spiritual and intellectual shifts of the period, as well as his attitude to religion as demonstrated in some examples of his fiction. “Uma xícara de chá” é uma das vinte breves narrativas que compõem o volume Historietter, escrito pelo sueco Hjalmar Söderberg e publicado em Estocolmo em 1898. O livro despertou o entusiasmo de certas rodas literárias logo após o lançamento, e o poeta e crítico Oscar Levertin chegou a afirmar que “poucas vezes se veem motivos puramente anedóticos transformados com tanto requinte em pequenas verdades e ensinamentos de vida como nessas histórias” e a declarar Söderberg “o homem da palavra bem-escolhida, mas necessária”. Uma vez que ele permanece inédito no Brasil, pareceu-me oportuno aproveitar a recente entrada de sua obra em domínio público e publicar algumas traduções esparsas dessas pequenas obras-primas.

Abstract:
The text shows the picture of nineteenth-century Stockholm saturated with negative content, revealing a large city as a space of deadness, chimerical vitalism, and unconditional dissolution as a result of crisis of values. Symptomatic for the nineteenth-century European social changes made the literary city a reflection of this process by showing the urban monstrosity of that destructive energy, its unfriendliness and controversy. This case is similar. The novelistic city shows multidimensional loneliness of man of that time. This image maps the entity which is not able to save its subjectivity, to find the formula, the man who from the heights of his own selfishness precipitates his identity into the abyss of all progression. It also shows the doom of rudimentary value, flattening of anthropocentric dimension of existence in favour of the eruption of animalistic instincts, impulses and consumerism. The characters in Hjalmar Söderberg’s novel – Martin, Arvid, Gabriel or Tomas – circulate in this space, wander, chase, roam the empty area looking for values. The characters being in chronic pointless movement automatically include themselves in an insensitive stream of street momentum, as they were passively involved in this whole theatre of gestures. Stockholm is a symbol of the inertial city, neutral existentially, it is a braid of illusions, fantasies, afterimages. The city is a zone of axiological deadness, damages. A sad face of the city chronically becomes a grimace of everything that is wrong, hardening into the “damage”, closure. It is an unusual character of this prose.

Hjalmar Söderbergs romaner presenterar en hel del olika kvinnobilder. Det handlar om dom svaga typiserade och schablonmässiga från romanerna: Ellen, en förtyckt arbetarflicka, Dagmar som på något sätt försöker bevara husfriden till allt pris, Harriet Skotte en kvinna för kärlekens och tidens ideal. Det handlar även om de nya starka kvinnobilderna från perioden kring sekelskiftet: Märta som representant för den borgarkvinna medveten om sin tids moral, den okända kvinnan som skildras med en inre styrka som gör att hon håller emot den orättvisa könsrelationerna och samtidigt älskar sin man för kärlekens skull, inte lojaliteten, vi har Helga Gregorius som tar sitt äktenskap i egna händer och försöker styra sin framtid, och slutligen den starkaste kvinnobilden av dem alla, Lydia. Lydia, en kvinnobild som tävlar på samma villkor som männen, som är i makt över sin egen sexualitet och samtidigt lever ett liv som sedan länge innan hade varit vigt åt männen. Detta är vad uppsatsen försöker presentera, en ny syn på Hjalmar Söderbergs romankonst och hans kvinnobilder. Hur nära den verkliga samtiden låg Söderbergs beskriving av kvinnorna? Det är en central fråga för uppsatsen. Söderberg var medveten om sin samtid, ytterst medveten.

Abstract:
women. The womens social movements for emancipation and equality within marriage created both freedom and anxiety among the population. A Swedish suffragette, Ellen Key was in the forefront to form opinions that reached the population. In addition, she also became a friend to the Swedish journalist and writer Hjalmar Soderberg. In this way, Key influenced Soderbergs social knowledge and writing. Most likely she had an impact on his novel Doctor Glas, which he worked on during their long acquaintance. Moreover, several of the Nordic novelists during the period, were introduced to the writings of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Particularly, Key was one of the first women to read Nietzsche as she could oversee with his misogyny and turned it into benefits to the emancipation. The aim of this essay is to examine the influence of the emancipation debates on the novel Doctor Glas. In addition, I also examine the influence of the German philosopher on the thinking of the Nordic writers. Particularly, I will try to explain the behaviour of the protagonist of the novel that ended in the death of the priest. My conclusion is a misled doctor by a twisted mind filled with philosophical beliefs of “superior” mentality.

Abstract:
I Identitetskris undersöks ambivalensen hos den fiktiva figuren doktor Glas. En svängande osäkerhet tar sig uttryck genom såväl karaktärens självsyn som genom de större frågor som karaktären ställer sig om människan och dess varande. Dessa tankar och frågor står att finna i de dagboksanteckningar som doktorn fingeras skriva, vilka har varit föremålet för uppsatsens analys. Doktor Glas framställs i ena stunden som ensam, viljesvag och självkritisk för att i nästa stund framställas som en man fylld av självförtroende och kraft som står över sina medmänniskor. Med hjälp av ett posthumanistiskt perspektiv kopplas karaktärens ambivalenta självsyn samman med hans uttalanden om Darwins utvecklingslära och om förhållandet djur­–människa. Glas uttrycker längtan efter ett tillstånd där människan inte teoretiserar hela sin tillvaro och istället lever mer ödmjukt och enkelt. På samma gång uttrycker han ett förakt mot människans ursprung bland djuren och förespråkar den civiliserade och tänkande människan. Analysen visar hur doktorns identitetsvacklande kan hänga samman med hans kluvna uttalanden kring människan som särskild från andra djur, från naturen och från sitt ursprung. Söderbergs stora idéroman visar sig innehålla mer känslogrund och fler paradoxer än vad man först kanske tror, när man väljer att se på den ur ett nytt perspektiv. Romanen kanske till och med kan sägas innehålla ett posthumanistiskt frö …

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka om doktor Glas i Hjalmar Söderbergs roman med samma namn är en opålitlig berättare. Detta görs genom att undersöka varför, hur och vad han skriver. Metoden är att först definiera dagboksromanen, och sedan analysera pålitlighet genom användandet av främst James Phelans narratologi, i samband med Vera Nünning och Uri Margolin. Analysen visar att Glas rapporterar händelser korrekt och gör det han säger att han ska göra, men han är oärlig om sina tankar, känslor och motivationer. Glas opålitlighet som berättare visar sig främst i att hans tolkningar och utvärderingar av situationer och personer inte alltid är riktiga eller rimliga.

Abstract:

Den allvarsamma leken (1912) by Hjalmar Söderberg has been regarded as one of the greatest love novels of Swedish literature. The story about Arvid Stjärnblom and Lydia Stille and their extramarital love is marked by timeless universality.

In this essay, I will examine this notion of love as a prediscursive value, by means pro¬vided by foremost poststructuralist theory. With Derrida’s conception of deconstruction, the analysis will reveal the constructedness of the true love in Söderbergs novel. Examinating typi¬cal logocentric binarisms the essay will show that the notion of true love is constituting a term in an oppositional relation with, in this specific case, the marriage sanctioned by society. This binarism is itself founded with the same principles as the by Derrida much disputed opposi¬tional pair of the spoken and written word.

Further, with true love understood as a discursive construction, the inquiry will show that this construction presuppose the notion of the public and private spheres of bourgeois society, where the public is reserved for the male and the private for the female. This will lead to a discussion of the constructedness status of sex and gender, which will show that the love ex¬pressed in the relationship of Arvid and Lydia is to be understood as a considerable part of heterosexual matrix, that is, the regulative framework which, according to Judith Butler, consti¬tute the rules for how intelligible sex and gender is to be produced.

Abstract:
The present essay is a translation study on the two French versions of the Swedish novel Doktor Glas, by Hjalmar Söderberg. As one among relatively few Swedish novels of its time, Doktor Glas has been translated and re-translated. The main purpose of this study is to identify and explain differences between the two French versions of Doktor Glas, concerning the ways the literary style of the Swedish author has been translated. By focusing on the methods of translation (transitions, omissions and the use of footnotes) used by the different translators, I examine to what extent the later ones have been successful in rendering what I call the “söderbergian” style/”le style söderbergien”. For this purpose, certain passages from the two French versions have been examined and compared to the corresponding passages within the original text. The different translators have used different methods of translation, some of which are and have sometimes been considered as controversial, for example in terms of their capacity to render the author-specific style into another language. A main conclusion in this study is that the re-translation is the more faithful of the two French versions of the “söderbergian” style/”le style söderbergien”.

Abstract:
I min uppsats vill jag inbjuda till en alternativ tolkning av Hjalmar Söderbergs Martin Bircks ungdom (1901). Syftet med uppsatsen är att ge förståelse för Martin Bircks karaktär och handlande genom att belysa den centrala relationen mellan Martin och modern. För att analysera Martins psykologi ställs hans gestalt mot den historiska samtidens uppfattningar om psykologi. Jag har även använt mig av ett psykoanalytiskt angreppssätt, framför allt grundat på Sigmund Freuds idéer, vilket fungerar både som litterär teori och metod. I min undersökning har jag funnit att Martin är en neurotisk person som lider av många av de psykiska problem som var vanliga runt 1900-talets sekelskifte, så som neurasteni. Jag har i enlighet med freudiansk psykoanalys tolkat Martins neuros som grundad i en inre konflikt mellan detet och överjaget. Inombords bär han på förbjudna känslor och tankar, och bortträngandet av dessa skapar en neuros. I uppsatsen argumenterar jag för att de otillåtna tankar som Martin bär på är erotiska känslor för modern, vilka han burit på sedan barnsben. Martin brottas således med ett oidipuskomplex.  Detta oidipuskomplex gör sig ständigt påmint i romanen, och har en stark påverkan på Martin, bland annat i hans relationer till kvinnor.
