Full textLife-threatening illnesses in children disrupt not only the lives of the young patients affected, but inevitably the life of the entire family as well. From both a care and research perspective, supporting the family is essential when planning and providing services for these clients. Yet few studies have expressly attempted to measure the needs of siblings of children with a life-threatening illness. Consequently there are very few measurement instruments available to assess the specific needs of this population, and none are in French. This impedes knowledge advancement in this field and thus the development of pediatric palliative care practices. This thesis concerns the needs of siblings of children with life-threatening illnesses. Its objectives are twofold: first, to develop a new instrument designed specifically to measure the unmet needs of siblings of children with a life-threatening illness, called the Inventaire des besoins de la fratrie d’enfants malades sévèrement (IBesFEMS), and second, to complete the preliminary steps of the psychometric validation process for this instrument. Four research phases were carried out. The first phase, completed during previous research work, aimed to produce a typology of the needs specific to this population, which was subsequently used to generate an initial pool of measurement items when the instrument was developed. Phase 2 consisted of having four groups of experts validate the content of these items. During Phase 3, a preliminary verification of the psychometric properties of the first version of IBesFEMS was completed. This led to the fourth phase in which the validity and reliability of IBesFEMS were verified. While further psychometric analysis is needed, IBesFEMS, which comprises 48 items over 10 dimensions, appears to have the characteristics needed for use by clinicians and researchers working with children with a life-threatening illness and their families. Keywords: needs, siblings, pediatric palliative care, measurement, psychometrics

Full textThis thesis is a theoretical essay on the question of power. There are two main perspectives in the traditional approach of power, the institutional perspective and the relational one. The definition we develop does not correspond to the two traditional perspectives, which neglect imaginary significations when defining power. Rooted in the philosophy of Castoriadis, our theory clearly distinguishes the concept of power from those of society and of politics. Instead of a capacity of the whole society or even a relation, we believe it must first be understood as the product of actors who are the embodiment of historically determined collective meanings. It is a social-historical imaginary embodied by a social group, which also receives broad support in society. This phenomenon exists in all societies, past, present or future. It supposes and aims for the freedom of individuals. Moreover, it does not include nor exclude violence, which is only a possible strategy, neither essential nor against its nature. The exercise of power involves four dimensions that are widely discussed in sociology and political science, namely the action, the norm, the will and the identity. Types stand at the crossroads of the foundation and the finality of the social-historical imaginary of each power. Thus we distinguish democracy, tyranny and two kinds of authority, transcendent authoritarian power, which takes place in traditional or religious societies, and immanent authoritarian power, which corresponds to totalitarianism as well as some archaic societies, empires and contemporary societies that are subject to the immanent authoritarian power of capital.

Full textThis is a qualitative investigation, based in the area of sociology of education. This is a case study developed during the year 2010 in the “Cerros Sur” institute. This study aims to show de development of sustainable dispositions in collective action in relation to formal education- Social movements. To do so, we have confronted concepts found in popular education, describing it as a freeing education, with those who describe formal education as a system that reproduces cultural domination, in the case of Bourdieu.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to clarify the role of advertising in accident prevention strategies through the review of its usage and impacts in Quebec from 1978 to 2011. It uses a discursive analysis, qualitative and exploratory in nature, which proceeds from a mixed method, anchored at the intersection of sociology of public problems and of marketing communications. It compares what managers know about the role and impact of their communication to what they say about it and what they do. Results are filtered and interpreted through four approaches of this specific problem: a model of the deterrence approach, a model of the main effects of advertising, a review of empirical literature on the effectiveness of road safety advertisements and the dramaturgical analysis developed by Gusfield to study the social construction of the drunk driving problem. It appears that road safety is an issue that the Quebec government manages in a preventive manner by using various strategies of social control, but always with constraint as a key variable to the improvement of road safety record and the acceptance of constraint as moderator of the relationship, and potentially as mediator of all moderators. Advertising is especially powerful to raise awareness of a social problem and build familiarity (acceptance of suggested causes and solutions promoted). It is used as an agenda setting tool, to create an upset outrage and thus a public endorsement of government’s ever more drastic solutions. Promoting free and informed conversion to safe road behaviours (manifest function of advertising) is a programmed failure aimed to raise the unrealistic and deceptive expectations that give way to proportional intolerances and public acceptance of new constraints (latent function of advertising). By satisfying a demand it has discretely created, State obtains legitimacy for its new constraints, a necessary condition for their effective implementation and full deterrent effect.
Martineau-Delisle, Catherine. "La participation publique et la gestion des forêts au Québec : changement de gouvernance, impacts des pratiques et profil des participants." Thesis, Université Laval, 2013. http://www.theses.ulaval.ca/2013/28983/28983.pdf.
Full textThe Canadian forest sector has gone through major transformations in the last decades. As a result, new practices have emerged among which public participation (PP) processes are particularly important. These are today a given in the sector, at every decisional level and for all actors. The growing importance of PP is said to reflect a major governance change in the management of forests. It is also seen as a practice which has many benefits: PP processes would improve the quality of decisions, ensure that a diversity of social values is considered, and increase trust in public authorities, for example. Despite the growing interest in PP, many knowledge gaps remain. To what point do PP processes reflect a governance change? What are their “real” impacts? Do they allow for the integration of a diversity of participants, as usually postulated? Our research aims to answer these questions based on the example of Québec forest sector. Firstly, based on an analysis of 693 cases of PP which happened over a period of more than three decades, the study provides with a high-level portrait of the evolution of PP processes in Québec forest sector. While the results prevent us from concluding that a real governance shift has happened, they clearly indicate that PP practices contribute to some key modifications in the conduct of forest management. Secondly, based on the perspective of 137 individuals having been involved in forest-related PP processes, the study identifies ten types of potential impacts of PP mechanisms as well as their significance from the point of view of the respondents. It also reveals key challenges related to the achievement of these impacts. Finally, one of the impacts of PP is measured empirically. To that end, the lists of participants to 27 public hearings were analyzed. The results reveal that, while PP opens decision-making to a wider range of participants, some forest actors tend to be favoured to the detriment of others. Overall, the key considerations raised by the study’s results allow important recommendations with regards to future PP practices and studies.
