IntroductionHoarding often occurs without the presence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), showing distinguishable neuropsychological and neurobiological correlates and a distinct comorbidity spectrum. Furthermore, it presents itself secondarily to other psychiatric and neurobiological disorders. Therefore hoarding disorder has been included as independent diagnosis in DSM-5.ObjectivesWe aim to expose the possible organic etiology of a hoarding disorder case with atypical presentation.Materials and methodsWe present a case of a 48 years old male patient who was brought to the hospital by t

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a recently recognized psychiatric condition, now classified under the category of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). It leads to an unwarranted attachment to material possessions, such that the individual is unable to separate themselves from them. There is still a lack of awareness of the critical sociological implications of this disorder, which is too often considered a purely health-related issue. Abstract Hoarding disorder (HD) has been recently added as a separate diagnostic category in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. HD is a common and disabling disorder, with an estimated prevalence in the general population of 2–6%. Although evidence suggests that the onset of hoarding symptoms is usually during childhood and adolescence (youth), relatively little is known about HD in this population. The present article is a selective review of emerging literature on the clinical features of hoarding in youth.

Emerging consensus suggests that hoarding is an independent phenomenon and it will likely be included as a new diagnosis (Hoarding Disorder) in the forthcoming revision to the DSM. An initial conceptual model of this condition has implicated information processing deficits and emotional distress as key components of hoarding disorder. Hoarding disorder is a mental illness that affects about 2-5 % of the population. The most prominent symptoms of hoarding disorder are the inability to discard things and the excessive acquisition of possessions. The home becomes cluttered, often to the point where one no longer can use the rooms for their intended purposes. For example, one can no longer sleep in the bed or use the kitchen for cooking because of the clutter that takes up space.
