Abstract:

Hoarding, the accumulation of a large number of possessions and substantial clutter, is increasingly being recognized as an important public health concern. Emerging consensus suggests that hoarding is an independent phenomenon and it will likely be included as a new diagnosis (Hoarding Disorder) in the forthcoming revision to the DSM. An initial conceptual model of this condition has implicated information processing deficits and emotional distress as key components of hoarding disorder. Although it has shown promise, this model is in need of greater empirical support and verifica

A number of recent twin studies have suggested that hoarding symptoms are heritable but heritability estimates vary across studies and the reasons for this remain unclear. Hoarding disorder is a mental illness that affects about 2-5 % of the population. The most prominent symptoms of hoarding disorder are the inability to discard things and the excessive acquisition of possessions. The home becomes cluttered, often to the point where one no longer can use the rooms for their intended purposes. For example, one can no longer sleep in the bed or use the kitchen for cooking because of the clutter that takes up space. Hoarding tends to appear in museum studies scholarship primarily as a foil for “proper” museological collecting. Yet hoarding has attracted a constellation of assumptions and meanings. In popular discourse, hoarding is often perceived as a behavior learned from a life of deprivation, while clinical discourse about hoarding seeks to determine how it should be classified in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. These multiple perspectives inform the ways in which hoarding, and by extension collecting and museum practices, can be defined and
