<p> Hoarding, the accumulation of a large number of possessions and substantial clutter, is increasingly being recognized as an important public health concern. Emerging consensus suggests that hoarding is an independent phenomenon and it will likely be included as a new diagnosis (Hoarding Disorder) in the forthcoming revision to the <i>DSM.</i> An initial conceptual model of this condition has implicated information processing deficits and emotional distress as key components of hoarding disorder. The current thesis consists of a literature review and meta-analysis, and a research study. The literature review aimed to synthesise and summarise the hoarding disorder (HD) prevalence evidence base. A systematic search was conducted to identify all relevant studies. A random effects meta-analysis was then conducted, with subgroup moderator analysis and meta-regression. Eleven studies, comprising of twelve samples met criteria (n = 53,378).
