Abstract:
This paper presents an ethnographic study of the Canadian Television Network’s (CTV) production of the 1988 Winter Olympic ice-hockey tournament. Interview data and media documents are analyzed to uncover how CTV strategically employed hockey as a spectacle of accumulation to boost ratings, expand market positioning, and to attract sponsors while blocking media competitors. At another level of understanding, ethnographic observations of the televisual labor process provide insights into how Olympic broadcasting constitutes a form of mediated communication or a spectacle of legitimation. Observations illustrate how the crew remade the live sporting event into a series of select cultural images. The manufacturing of Olympic images is revealed to be a social process that reproduces select systems of meaning, reinforces particular modes of media production, and strengthens monopolistic network relationships.

Abstract:
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, a sports and entertainment arena in Long Island, New York, encountered a public relations challenge in the 1990s. Nassau Coliseum, one of a few high-capacity venues in the New York metropolitan area, hosted the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League and concerts featuring headliners such as the Grateful Dead, New Kids on the Block, and Frank Sinatra. Nevertheless, the arena became a target for the world’s first all-sports radio station, WFAN 660 AM in New York City. WFAN hosts perpetuated the image of a dreary “Nassau Mausoleum” with dim lighting, long bathroom and concession lines, and a leaky roof. By placing students in the decision-making situation that confronted the Nassau Coliseum executives, this case explores various approaches to reputation management at sports venues.

Abstract:
Although there is mixed evidence of the role of uncertainty of outcome as it relates to attendance at stadiums, the limited evidence available for television ratings has shown that fans tend to prefer more uncertainty of outcome when it comes to watching live sports on television. Given the often substantially higher customer investments associated with live event attendance compared to television, fan preferences may differ across the two. This study examines Nielsen ratings for two previously unstudied sports in North America, the National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Soccer (MLS). The uncertainty of outcome hypothesis is supported by the results in both samples using two separate measures of uncertainty of outcome. In addition, expected scoring is shown to positively impact television ratings in the NHL.

Subject area Marketing management, Sports marketing. Study level/applicability The case is targeted at students of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in business administration, specialising in marketing management/sports marketing. Case overview The Hockey India League (HIL) failed to make its mark. After the grand success of the Indian Premier League in India, there were hopes afloat for the HIL to follow suit. However, while the Pro Kabaddi League and the Premier Badminton League received much appreciation from a devout audience, the HIL did not quite live up to its expectations. With its evident failure for two consecutive seasons, investor sentiments were at an all-time low and most stakeholders wanted to back out. The future of the HIL now hangs in the balance, with the uncertainty of whether it should be shut down or given one more chance. Expected learning outcomes The participants are required to understand the Indian sports environment and the factors that play a major role in making a sport not only popular but also lucrative from the point of view of the investors. They will be called upon to improvise on the existing format of a sport, making it more attractive to the audience. Through such an exercise, they will understand how strategic changes to basic game formats can impact its success or failure. The case will encourage participants to think about viable business models for the revival of different types of sport. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. Abstract:
Abstract The article focuses on a relatively new genre of computermediated communication, online sports reporting (also known as live text commentary or minute- by-minute match report). This is a hybrid genre which combines a chronologically structured narrative (capturing the events of the sporting match minutebyminute) and the commentator’s evaluative formulations (evaluations which are often expressive and subjective, funny and humorous statements) as well as his implicit contact with the audience (fictitious dialogue). It thus fulfills both the informative function (providing factual information) and the entertainment one (as typical infotainment). The introductory characterization of the genre is based on the work of J. Chovanec, but unlike in his work, it focuses on Czech live text commentary (mainly from soccer, hockey and tennis matches) and on the terms, nonstandard professional vocabulary units and slang expressions in the commentators’ speech. Significant attention has been devoted to these levels of the lexicon in Czech and Slovak linguistics. However, the genre in question once again confirms how difficult it is to distinguish them. For example, the combination of individual expressions (or entire language levels) with standard, “colloquial” or nonstandard Czech appears to be very problematic in this respect.

Abstract:
On a drizzly late afternoon, soon after the November 1984 elections and well before the start of the 99th Congress, I slogged into the Cannon House Office Building for an interview with a real, live congressman. This was not a new experience. As a television reporter for a decade, I'd interviewed dozens of representatives and senators along the way. This interview was entirely different, however, because this time I was looking for a job, and the member was looking for an APSA Congressional Fellow to help out in his office. After the usual half hour wait in the lobby, I was ushered in to meet the member. It was football season and before settling into the couch, he was bragging about his alma mater's quarterback. Fortunately, my home team had a hot quarterback too, so we debated quarterback's arms instead of the nuclear or conventional variety. I was scheduled for 20 minutes with the member, and half the time expired before the member abruptly turned to the real subject at hand—hockey. About the time I'd run through the last fact in my hockey memory, the member actually picked up my resume and scanned it.One fact leaped from the page and got him even more worked up than his quarterback's passing percentage. “So you're a TV reporter, huh? I've always liked having TV guys around.” By now the 20-minute interview time was up, but it would be another 1½ hours before I got back out into the rain, with my first real insight into politics and TV news, from the other side of the camera.

Abstract:
This paper examines the determinants of live game Regional Sport Network (RSN) average annual ratings in three major North American professional sport leagues: Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Hockey League (NHL). A conceptual model of the determinants of club RSN ratings is constructed based on a marketing management framework. Five categories of determinants are identified: Product-Club, Product-Player, Brand-Club, Brand-Player, and Place. Data were collected over a 12-year period (1999–2011) for a total of 46 independent variables. The list of independent variables was reduced to 16 factors and a proxy variable for each of the factors identified. Univariate and multivariate analyses were undertaken. Strong support for the each of the five categories in the conceptual model was found for the pooled sample of all three leagues. Results at the individual league level revealed league differences in the relative importance of individual variables. Implications for future research and practice are presented.

Abstract:
The sport industry has long used social media as an effective instrument of communication. In the framework of the current study, a content analysis investigated how professional sport clubs in Germany use Facebook and Twitter. The study covers the entire 2015–16 season, which was illustrated via selectively choosing 2 weeks for data analysis; four clubs each from basketball, ice hockey, football, and handball were collected as a sample. All Facebook posts and Twitter tweets published by the 16 clubs during the 2 weeks, a total of 3,412 contributions (Facebook 717, Twitter 2,695), were included in the analysis. The codebook contained 57 variables, and this article presents the results on the identified topics of the published contents on the two social media platforms. On both platforms, the clubs under examination primarily issued statements regarding themselves and their sport-related activities. Twitter is predominantly used as a live medium during games, whereas Facebook allows for significantly greater reach. However, no sport-related differences were found between the two social media platforms.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine within the framework of symbolic interaction theory and field theory how women national ice hockey players understand ice hockey through their experiences. Semi-structured interviews were used to understand the experiences of 21 ice hockey players from the Turkish women’s national team, and themes were developed from the data using the thematic analysis methods. A total of three main themes and two sub-themes were created after the analysis. In this context, three main themes related to the theoretical framework were established: “Symbolic Meanings: A Strong Ice Hockey Player,” “Ice Hockey As a Life Space,” and “A Hard Fight On the Ice.” In addition, under the main theme of “Ice Hockey As a Life Space” are two sub-themes: “World of Emotions” and “Constraints.” Ice hockey is perceived by women players as a living space that expresses a firm stance towards life. Despite the presence of traces of the concept of gender, ice hockey is not seen as a fully gendered area by Turkish players. In general, women players reported the lack of financial and social support as limiting factors for participation in ice hockey, while moral support and high motivation were supporting factors.

Abstract:
Purpose:To compare psychophysiological responses to 6 repeated-sprint sessions in normobaric hypoxia (RSH) and normoxia (RSN) in team-sport athletes during a 2-wk “live high–train low” training camp. Methods:While residing under normobaric hypoxia (≥14 h/d, FiO2 14.5–14.2%), 23 lowland elite field hockey players performed, in addition to their usual training, 6 sessions (4 × 5 × 5-s maximal sprints, 25-s passive recovery, 5 min rest) under either RSH (FiO2 ~14.5%) or RSN (FiO2 21%). Sprint 1 and 5 times, physiological strain (heart rate [HR], arterial oxyhemoglobin saturation [SpO2]), and perceptual responses (overall peripheral discomfort, difficulty breathing, and lower-limb discomfort) were monitored. Results:During the 1st session, HR increased across sets (P < .001) independently of the conditions, while SpO2 was globally lower (P < .001) for RSH (averaged value: 91.9% ± 1.2%) vs RSN (96.9% ± 0.6%). Thereafter, SpO2 and HR remained similar across sessions for each condition. While 1st-sprint time remained similar, last-sprint time and fatigue index significantly decreased across sets (P < .01) and sessions (P < .05) but not between conditions. Ratings of overall perceived discomfort, difficulty breathing, and lower-limb discomfort were higher (P < .05) in RSH vs RSN at the 1st session. During subsequent sessions, values for overall perceived discomfort (time [P < .001] and condition [P < .05] effects), difficulty breathing (time effect; P < .001), and lower-limb discomfort (condition [P < .001] and interaction [P < .05] effects) decreased to a larger extent in RSH vs RSN.Conclusion:Despite higher hypoxia-induced physiological and perceptual strain during the 1st session, perceptual responses improved thereafter in RSH so as not to differ from RSN. This indicates an effective acclimation and tolerance to this innovative training.

Abstract:
During the last couple of years, mobile augmented reality (MAR) has seen an increase in its potential due to improved available hardware and software. Applications such as Pokémon GO and IKEA Place are just a few of the successful ways MAR can be used in. Smartphone user’s tendency to look up information and data, such as live sport feeds, present unexplored opportunities for augmented reality (AR). This thesis aims to explore the usability and suitability using AR for live information visualization. For this purpose, an Android MAR application has been written in Java with Android Studio, using ARCore to visualize live events and statistics from a hockey game. The user can place a virtual hockey rink in a real-world environment and then toggle between a live event feed where current match events are being displayed, and a statistics view, where the user can see the statistics of the match, all in AR. The application was tested by nine participants between the age 1957 years old, which also answered a system usability scale test (SUS). The SUS yielded a score with the mean 76.6 out of 100, which is above the mean of studies using SUS. The user testing yielded mostly positive feedback regarding the concept of using AR to visualize information, and seven out of the nine participants thought it was a fun way of visualizing a hockey game. The result of the user testing also revealed possible problems of using AR to visualize data, such as information occlusion. In conclusion, MAR is a diverse technology which use has much undiscovered potential. The study indicates that it is a suitable and usable method for visualizing information and live data.

Abstract:

Gupta, Ankur. "Using line and ellipse features for rectification of broadcast hockey video." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30490.

Full text
Abstract:
To use hockey broadcast videos for automatic game analysis, we need to compensate for camera viewpoint and motion. This can be done by using features on the rink to estimate the homography between the observed rink and a geometric model of the rink, as specified in the appropriate rule book (top down view of the rink). However, occlusion due to players, wide range of camera motion and frames with few reliable key-points pose a significant challenge for robustness and accuracy of the solution. In this work, we describe a new method to use line and ellipse features along with key-point based matches to estimate the homography. We combine domain knowledge (i.e., rink geometry) with an appearance model of the rink to detect these features accurately. This overdetermines the homography estimation to make the system more robust. We show this approach is applicable to real world data and demonstrate the ability to track long sequences on the order of 1,000 frames.

Abstract:
Using feminist perspectives, the treatment of women's participation in leisure sport within leisure studies and the sociology of sport, is explored. The review traces the progress made, in moving enquiry away from questions of distribution, towards questions of relations between women and men and how these are reproduced and enacted in leisure and sports experiences. Epistemological and methodological issues f acing feminist researchers in leisure studies and the sociology of sport are outlined. The research explored the dynamics between women's uses and control of time, their framing and definition of leisure sport in their own lives, past and present. A cumulative approach, using several research methods, was developed. Forty women, twenty badminton and twenty hockey players, were research partners. Interactions with each included: use of interview pro formas for personal profiles, participation parameters and weekly time profiles; personal life histories; and questions designed to link, check and provide perspective. The methods were effective for exploring changes in meanings of leisure and sport activities over time. The main findings included the centrality of "others" in women's uses of time and sport experiences, and recurrent themes of autonomy and control, recovery, personal fulfilmont, tensions between commitments and constraints, and sport as "cultural capital". The findings are related to issues of public policy and provision in leisure and sport.

Abstract:
In todays society sports has become a major part in people’s life, with the emerging of professionalization it’s become a thriving business that generates big money. An outcome of this evolution of sports as meant that most athletes must put more time and energy in to their athletics to have a chance to reach their dreams of being a professional athlete. And if an athletes dream get cut short somehow, the process of moving out of sport has been shown to somtimes be a difficult process for athletes that don’t have anything to fall back on. That’s why it is important for athletes to have the option to be able to combine their athletics with academics. The purpose of this study was to examine how a duel career, support services and life skills help to balance out the negative outcomes of pursuing a professional career in sports while also working for a higher education. During this study eight men and two women that where playing ice hockey and studying at an NCAA division 1 university where interviewed about their perceptions being student-athletes in a high performance university that has high standards on academics and sports. The results showed that most of support services offered to the student athletes helped them in reducing stress and having a more balanced life between sports and studies. The results also showed that the student-athletes perceived that they prioritized hockey and studies highly and their free time to do other things suffered because of that. Another aspect in the result showed that community service, which was part of the student-athlete program, helped them with putting things in perspective and affected them in a positive way in being student-athletes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This diploma thesis is focused on the live-broadcast sports events commentary which is a strictly specific journalistic profession and also one of the most challenging news disciplines of them all. It mainly concentrates on the professional commentators ("play-by-play") in the television environment. To define differences between performances of commentators in public and private television stations using linguistic and quantitative context analysis is the main goal of this thesis. The gender issues in the live-broadcast sports events commentary as a field - which are very rare in the Czech academic environment - are also being evaluated here. Transcripts of commentaries of previously chosen ice hockey matches are the main source for practical chapters of this publication. In both theoretical and practical parts of the thesis, author also considers his own interviews conducted with commentators and other professionals from selected field.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of physical fitness quotient on adolescents doing in-line hockey trainings. Fifty adolescents were come forward to attend the program and they’ve been divided into two groups, which is experimental group and control group. Each group had 25 peoples; Experimental group was performed 90 minutes per time in 3 times per week during 10 weeks, whereas the control group had no training at all. The information of original test was transformed into score by adolescent PFQ model chart, information was handled and analyzed by descriptive statistics, and the sample used T test and single factor covariance analysis. After 10 weeks, experimental group students’ muscular strength and muscular endurance, circulatory-respiratory endurance, agility, balance, speed, explosive force, HPFQ, SPFQ, and PFQ improved obviously. Body-mass index, reaction, coordination and flexibility have no significant variations in pre-test and post-test. Control group students’ muscular strength and muscular endurance, speed, HPFQ and PFQ makes significant regression. Flexibility, circulatory-respiratory endurance, body-mass index, agility, balance, coordination, reaction, explosive force and SPFQ have no significant variations in pre-test and post-test. The result above shows that In-line hockey indeed helping adolescents makes significant progress on their score of PFQ, HPFQ and SPFQ. But 10 weeks in-line hockey training is unable to raise the score of flexibility and coordination effectively. Hope follow-up research can investigate the reason thoroughly.

The knee joint is the most commonly injured joint in the body. Clinical methods used at present for the diagnosis of cartilage pathology in the knee are invasive in nature. Analysis of vibration signals emitted by the knee joint has the potential for the development of a non-invasive procedure for the diagnosis of knee pathology. By Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and calculating root mean square (RMS) value, via One Way ANOVA at last, to demonstrate whether the two analysis methods are valid in this work. The method was tested on 14 male volunteers from NSYSU (7 players of in-line skating and 7 normal schoolmates). By analyzing the signals extracted from the players, finding difference of them, and distinguishing whether they are healthy. In conclusion, if the knee joint ligament is unusual, the frequency of signal is higher than 50 Hz; if not, the frequency is lower than 10 Hz. On the other hand, the RMS value of signal has no distinct region among the testers, so could not be used to analyze the signals. The results should be able to take as the reference for the diagnosis of knee joint non-invasively in clinical medicine.

Abstract:
Most of the concussion literature is devoted to concussion and men, and this literature focuses primarily on American football and ice hockey. Yet women appear to be more prone to sport-related concussion than men, and may manifest with more concussion-like symptoms both at both baseline and post-concussion. There may be both endocrinologic and biomechanical reasons why women’s concussive symptoms are different from men’s, but this remains incompletely understood. There may also be sex-based and gender-based differences in how men and women experience and describe concussion. It is important to understand these distinctions when managing concussion in women.

Abstract:
“Dad, you cannot be serious!” Julie had made what she thought was a simple request: Could she go to the hockey game with her friends on Friday night? To her father, Neill, it was a very big deal. That Friday would be the first anniversary of the death of his wife (Julie’s mother), Deanna. Neill had spent weeks figuring out just the right way to mark the date, ultimately deciding to take his four children to visit the gravesite, release balloons, and then have dinner at what had been Deanna’s favorite restaurant. Most importantly, they would spend the day together as a family, something Deanna would have liked. Now, with the anniversary only a week away, his fifteen-year-old daughter wanted out. “Are you really saying that I can’t go?” Julie asked again. “That’s exactly what I’m saying,” Neill said tersely. “You do realize why next Friday is so important, right?” When he questioned whether she cared more about going to a hockey game than honoring her mother, Julie became indignant. She shot back that just because she wanted to hang out with her friends did not mean she had forgotten about Mom. The argument escalated quickly. Neill was resolute; like it or not, she would be spending next Friday night with her family. Julie stormed off to her room and slammed the door. For the next several days, they barely spoke to each other. Neill could not believe his daughter was acting as if the first anniversary of her mother’s death was just another day. Still, he hated that they were arguing. He knew that Julie was grieving too and he worried, not for the first time since Deanna died, that his initial reaction had been unnecessarily harsh. Neill felt lost and alone. As he had done from time to time over the past year, he lay down on his bed, looked up, and talked aloud to Deanna. But the one-way “conversation” brought little clarity. The next night, Neill attended a support group for men who were widowed fathers raising children on their own.

Abstract:
Recognized world sports federations appear to have chosen their official rating systems with marketing in mind. 87% of the 105 official rating systems involve the simple accumulation of points, which encourages top competitors to enter as many tournaments as possible. Most of those systems recognize a seasonal champion. A marketer can exploit the importance of the end-of-season events and the appearance of top athletes. To be successful in a combat sport like wrestling, boxing, and judo, physically overcoming the opponent is intensely personal. Top competitors can be advertised in personal terms to encourage the awaiting audience to buy into the upcoming contest on an equally personal level. In other sports such as running, swimming, and rowing, each competitor performs unimpeded by the opponent. Often the best performance for a season is used to crown a yearly champion. A rating in seconds and meters is more tangible than one in points. A marketer can illustrate the small gap between top competitors making every stride important to potential ticket buyers. Some of the object-control sports like basketball, cricket, ice hockey, rugby, soccer, and tennis are rated by point accumulators and some are rated by more sophisticated systems that self adjust, based on the relative strengths of the opponents. Mind sports such as chess and bridge are included because these competitions are recognized by the International Olympic Committee and by SportAccord. The specifics of those rating systems are provided in this chapter as are suggested marketing opportunities.

Abstract:
“Absolutely. One-hundred percent,” Neill answered without hesitation. Karl repeated his question. “Do you really believe your children would be better off if you had died instead of your wife?” “It’s not even close,” Neill said. He quickly counted off all the things Deanna had done for their family, detailing her involvement in just about every aspect of their children’s lives. She was simply a much more important cog in the family wheel. “You guys helped me out with my daughter and the hockey game situation, but Deanna would have handled it on her own.” Neill concluded, “So, yes, for my children’s sake, there’s no question that the wrong parent died.” The discussion leading up to the exchange between Neill and Karl had coalesced around the familiar topic of parental competence—or, as the men often saw it, parental incompetence. Karl had shared his latest blunder, which occurred when he took his two children on a family trip to Connecticut for a wedding. As they were leaving their hotel room for the ceremony, Karl noticed for the first time how his children were dressed. “So, there’s my ten-year-old son wearing this pair of khakis that don’t come close to fitting him. The pant legs stopped about three inches above his ankles and he couldn’t even button the pants because the waistband was so tight. He looked ridiculous, but they were the only pair of pants I’d brought for him to wear.” Yet another instance of being unprepared, something Karl hated. “I’m standing there looking at my son in the hallway of this hotel and I think to myself, ‘No way this happens if Susan were still here.’ ” “I know just what you mean,” Neill said. “Deanna did so many things better than I’m doing them now. I feel like I’m screwing up pretty much all the time.” Then he said the words that caught Karl by surprise: “The wrong parent died.” Neill had never been comfortable opening up about his feelings. He joined the support group only for his children’s sake.

Abstract:
The changing cultural and social landscape of our world today, along with the emergence of various technologies, has redefined 21st century societies. In light of these changes, new pedagogical approaches have been implemented to support civic life, education, and communication in our highly complex, digitised era (Pegrum, Dudeney, & Hockly, 2018). One such approach is virtual exchange, a technologically-mediated practice which involves engaging classes in online intercultural interaction and collaboration projects with geographically dispersed partners (O’Dowd, 2007, 2019). Many studies (Helm, 2014; Hauck & Satar, 2018; Vinagre, 2016) have examined the role of technology in virtual exchange projects as well as the development of various digital competences, along with linguistic and intercultural learning. The present study contributes to the discussion pertaining to the role of technology in the virtual exchange context adding a critical digital literacies perspective manifested in the use of technology for global competence development and as a social praxis (Ávila & Pandya, 2013). Specifically, the study aims at exploring the students’ perceptions about digital skills development through their participation in a global competence virtual exchange project, as well as the ways in which students interact with technology in order to develop global competence and active citizenship.

Abstract:
The French-speaking Swiss traveler Ella Maillart (1903–1997) was a remarkable personality. By age thirty, she had taught French in a Welsh school, sailed in the Olympics for the Swiss team, acted on the Parisian stage, captained the Swiss women’s field hockey team, assisted on an excavation in Crete, studied film production in Moscow, published a book about a north-south walk through the Caucasus, and ridden a camel across the Kizil Kum Desert in present-day Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, southeast of the Aral Sea—in midwinter. No one knows why she had such a penchant for adventure and variety: perhaps she was rebelling against the staid and thoroughly conventional family life of her childhood. The freedom and self-assertion taken for granted by many women today could then be achieved only by being unconventional and heading off into the unknown. At the age of twenty-eight, Maillart gazed on China for the first time. “In 1932, having gone east from Moscow, I climbed a mountain nearly 17,000 feet high on foot, and succeeded in reaching the eastern frontier of Russian Turkestan. There, at least, from the heights of the Celestial Mountains I could decry, on a plain far away and still further to the east, the yellow dust of the Takla Makan desert. It was China, the fabulous country of which, since my childhood, I had dreamed. There the caravan trails that were as old as the world, still wound. Long ago, Marco Polo followed them as far as Peking.”1 But she was unable to obtain a visa to enter Chinese Turkestan, which, like Outer Mongolia, was virtually isolated from the world by political turmoil. “Sadly,” she wrote, “I retraced my steps, turning my back on the limitless unknown that beckoned.” Maillart traveled in romantic lands whose very names evoke adventure— Pingliang, Yarkand, Kashgar. For centuries, the Silk Road was synonymous with danger, mystery, and high adventure beyond the frontiers of the Western world. The men and women who explored this remote and unfamiliar realm had no illusions about the dangers and political disorder that awaited them, but they would have been quietly horrified to hear their travels described as adventures.

Tate, Jitendra S., and Ajit D. Kelkar. "Flexural Behavior of Biaxial Braided Composites." In ASME 2005 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2005-81324.

Full text
Abstract:
Braided composites have more balanced properties than traditional tape laminates, and have potentially better fatigue and impact resistance due to the interlacing. The natural conformability of biaxial braided tubes makes it the ideal preform for three-dimensional complex components. Braid tube fits on complex components with ease just like pulling socks on feet. Thus cutting, stitching, or manipulation of fiber placement is not needed, as in the use of woven fabrics. Biaxial braided composites find applications in aerospace, automotive, construction, medical, and recreational industry. Some of the products are automobile cross beams, lamp and utility poles, prosthetic limbs, hockey sticks, baseball bats, and bicycle components. Vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) is a low-cost manufacturing process with the capability of manufacturing complex parts with higher fiber volume fractions than those from hand lay-up. To utilize the braided composites to the fullest advantage (and hence to avoid underutilization), it is necessary to understand their behavior under flexural, impact, and fatigue loading. Flexural loading is dominant in the above-mentioned applications of braided composites. This research addresses the effect of braid angle on flexural behavior and failure mechanisms of biaxial braided composites manufactured using VARTM.
