Abstract:
Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is associated with an increased risk of developing Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). South Africa (SA) has the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world. There is currently no 5-year overall survival (OS) outcome based data for HIV-associated HL from SA. Methods: A bone marrow database was compiled of all bone marrow biopsies (BMB) reported at National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) between January 2005 and December 2012. Patients who had a BMB performed for staging of HL or where HL was diagnosed on the BMB were included for fu

Classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cHL) represents the most common subtype of malignant lymphoma in young people in the Western world. Despite modern treatment strategies, about 20% of patients still die due to relapse or progressive disease. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a type of T/null-cell lymphoma that represents about 20-30% of paediatric lymphomas and has an aggressive clinical course with frequent relapse. Recently, high-level expression of CSF-1R on malignant cells in cHL and ALCL has been linked to shorter progression free survival, providing a rationale to test adoptive CSF-1R

Marginal zone (MZ) lymphomas (MZLs) represent a group of lymphomas originating from B lymphocytes of the “marginal zone” which is the external part of the secondary lymphoid follicles. The WHO classifies MZL into 3 entities; extranodal MZL, splenic MZL and nodal MZL. Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (EMZL) can arise in different tissues, including the stomach, salivary gland, lung, small bowel, thyroid, ocular adnexa and skin. We present a 25 years old female with a history of angioedema and chronic cutaneous eczema who developed an unusual EMZL. Patient presented with a history of rapidly en

Introduction: indolent non-Hodgkin lymphomas (iNHL) and mantle-cell lymphoma (MCL) have a heterogeneous behavior, impacted by biological and clinical parameters. Bendamustine is widely used in association with rituximab (BR) to treat iNHL and MCL. The variability in treatment efficacy and toxicity could be related to germline single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in immune and inflammatory response genes. Methods: we would like to show a possible association between SNPs and treatment outcome in iNHL and MCL patients receiving BR regimen. We have investigated some SNPs that have already bee

Abstract:

Following World War II, the production of chlorine-containing organic molecules known as organochlorines (OCs) became commonplace. Although heightened regulation has since occurred in Canada, OCs continue to pose health and environmental concerns due to their persistence and ongoing use elsewhere.
