Abstract:
The main objectives of the article were: a comparison of the demographic and SE indicators in the South Moravian Region, a study of the development of demographic and SE indicators in the South Moravian Region in the years 2006–2015 and the clustering of similar districts on the basis of demographic and SE indicators as well as mortality and its main causes. The set of aspects affecting the structure of mortality represented 12 demographic factors and 2 socio-economic factors. The results of the composite indicator and the beta convergence indicate that the positive development of the analysed factors was mainly achieved by the Vyškov District and the Brno-Country District, while negative development was observed in the Břeclav District. The cluster analysis was based on four clusters: cluster 1 (Břeclav, Hodonín and Znojmo districts) showed below-average values of the demographic and the socio-economic indicators with a relatively favourable mortality rate based on causes of death; cluster 2 (Blansko and Vyškov districts) was classified as average; cluster 3 (mainly including the Brno-Country District) was seen as the best and cluster 4 (mainly including the Brno-City district) was observed to have negative development.

Abstract:
Infiltration of water into the soil was monitored from 2012 to 2015 in two fishpond dikes of three different variants of grass species composition: variant 1 – grass mix for extensively dry conditions, variant 2 – heavy duty grass mix, variant 3 – grass mix for intensively moist areas. The monitored grass vegetation was mowed twice a year. The Rohatec pond is situated in Jindřichův Hradec district, in terms of texture its dike is made of sandy soil. The Horní Šatlava pond in Hodonín district and its dike consists of sandy to sandy‑loam soils. Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was measured with a Mini Disk Infiltrometer. On Rohatec dike the heavy duty mix proved the most suitable option for soil infiltration, while the best variant on Horní Šatlava dike was the mix for extensive drought. The lowest average unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was found in the extensive moisture variant which was statistically confirmed in the Horní Šatlava location.

Abstract:
The problem of the reuse of abandoned military sites has arisen in post-communist countries in central and eastern Europe since 1989. It brought about a sudden process of demilitarisation and a consequent loss of the original functions. The size of the armed forces has gradually been shrunk and their configuration changed, causing numerous areas and properties to be abandoned. The paper discusses the cases of two towns, Hodonín and Uherské Hradiste located in the south east of the Czech Republic, where the progressive reduction of the military presence has caused numerous barracks to be abandoned. Both towns are district capitals and have a population of over 25,000 inhabitants. Although the ways used to revitalise the towns were partly different, the restoration and renovation of the areas helped to generate development opportunities for both of them.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper was to compare two methods of farming, especially their effect on water soil erosion. The examined methods were (1) large-scale farming, where more than 50% of the land was leased, and (2) small-scale farming, where the land was almost exclusively privately owned. The research area was 8 cadastres in the district of Hodonín, South Moravia, Czech Republic. In these cadastres 48 land blocks representing both large-scale and small-scale farming (i.e. owners and tenants) were chosen. The long-term average annual soil loss caused by water erosion (G) was calculated using the erosion model USLE 2D and ArcGIS 10.1. The nonparametric Mann-Whitney test was used for the statistical evaluation of the data. The difference between the soil loss (G) on land blocks farmed by small producers (owners) and large producers (tenants) was significant (p < 0.05). Differences between the values of the cropping-management factor (C) were not statistically significant (p = 0.054). Based on the analysis of other variables in the USLE equation it can be stated that a continuous slope length, conditioned by the size of land blocks, played an important role in the amount of soil loss caused by water erosion. Above all, to protect the soil from erosion and maintain soil quality it is necessary to reduce the size of land blocks farmed by tenants and improve the crop rotation systems.

Abstract:
: The equable regional development and mitigation of disparities among the individual regions are main objectives of regional policy not only in the Czech Republic but in the whole European Union. The paper presents an analysis of life quality disparities among the administrative districts of the South-Moravian region (Jihomoravský kraj): Blansko, Brno-City, Brno-Province, Břeclav, Hodonín, Vyškov and Znojmo. The region of South Moravia belongs to the regions with a significant economic potential. However, not all districts contribute to this potential equally, the reason being their size, population and life quality. Life quality is affected by the environmental, social and cultural resources and by the region’s economic performance. It can be viewed from various aspects. The work is focused on the life quality indicators of social and cultural resources, which assess demographic development, age and intelligence structures, employment, unemployment and labour market, health care standard and civil amenities. The statistical analysis of the acquired data was made by using the methods of regression and correlation analyses and the cluster analysis.

Abstract:
Environmental samples (n = 254) were collected at regular intervals from 1994 to 1999 on three swine farms in the area of the district town Hodonín, Czech Republic. The samples of feed mixtures (n = 85), barn dust sediments (n = 44), and muscular (n = 42), hepatic (n = 41), and renal (n = 42) tissues of feeder pigs were analysed for the concentrations of mercury, cadmium and lead. The concentrations of mercury showed decreasing tendencies in animal tissue samples (1994–1996). Compared with the mean for the Czech Republic, the concentration of mercury was markedly higher in liver and kidney samples (0.064 mg/kg and 0.114 mg/kg, respectively) collected in 1998, the concentration of cadmium was moderately higher in feed, muscle, liver, and kidney samples collected in 1996–1998. Statutory limits were exceeded in two liver and two kidney samples and one feed sample only. The concentration of lead in muscle, kidney, and feed samples (1994–1996) and barn dust samples (1996–1998) showed also a decreasing tendency. However, the limit was exceeded in 16 muscle samples (0.11 to 0.23 mg/kg) collected in 1994–1999 and two kidney samples collected in 1996 (0.74 mg/kg) and 1999 (0.77 mg/kg). Heavy metals present in dust sediments apparently did not contribute significantly to their content in animal tissue. While the health risk resulting from the contents of mercury and cadmium can be classified as moderate, the contents of lead must be regarded as markedly more dangerous.

Abstract:
The main aim of the study was to find out whether cultural tourism could be a driver of rural development in the selected area and in general. In case yes, to what extent and under what conditions. Three districts in the South-Moravian Region, Znojmo, Břeclav, and Hodonín, situated in the rural borderland with Austria and Slovakia represented the study area. Both geographical and sociological methods were used to gather evidence for cultural tourism in that study. Firstly, attractiveness analysis of the area defined for cultural tourism took place. Next, factors influencing the potential for cultural tourism affecting rural development in South Moravia were evaluated. Finally, synergistic relations were discussed. In the territory, many forms of tourism intersect. Based on the results, it can be stated that cultural tourism can hardly be the main driver of rural development after the decline of agriculture because the region’s economy has branched out in several directions. However, it can be an important complementary activity that yields both economic and non-economic benefits.

Jarošová, A. "Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in the food chain." Czech Journal of Food Sciences 24, No. 5 (November 12, 2011): 223–31. http://dx.doi.org/10.17221/3318-cjfs.

Full text
Abstract:
Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) rank among the primary risk pollutants and their adverse effects may endanger the environmental balance and affect the ontogenetic development of live organisms and their body functions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to monitor the occurrence of PAEs in packaging materials and plastics (infusion sets), to evaluate the accumulation and distribution of the most common phthalates such as DEHP (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate) and DBP (di-n-butyl phthalate) in body tissues and organs of pigs and broiler chicks having been administered the phthalates per os, to assess the occurrence of PAEs in pig and cattle farms in the district of Hodonín (1997–1999), and to propose precautionary measures to mitigate the risk of PAE penetration into the food chain and the environments. DEHP and DBP contents in packaging materials ranged from 0.1 to 4259 mg DEHP, and from 0.1 to 1298 mg DBP per 1 kg printed packaging material, respectively. In haemodialysis patients, over 0.5 mg DEHP per 1 kg blood was found after three hours of haemodialysis. In combined feeds for farm animals (pigs, cattle, poultry), DEHP and DBP concentrations ranging from 0.07 to 1.77 and from 0.06 to 2.36 mg/kg feed, respectively, were detected. In all the food samples investigated, measurable levels of DEHP (less than 0.01–0.22 mg/kgsample) and DBP (less than 0.01 to 1.31 mg/kgsample) were found. In the experimental pigs and broilers, phthalates were distributed in all the organs monitored and the highest accumulation was found in adipose tissue as expected. All the samples withdrawn from farms in the Hodonín district had measurable phthalate concentrations; the hygienic limit (4 mg/kg) was exceeded in 2 samples of swine adipose tissue (4.26 and 6.92 mg/kgfresh sample) and in 1 sample of cattle adipose tissue (4.75 mg/kgfresh sample).

Abstract:
Environmental samples (n = 216) were collected at regular intervals from 1994 to 1999 on three pig farms (D., M., T.) in the area of the district town of Hodonín, Czech Republic. The samples of feed mixtures (n = 85), drinking water (n = 44), barn dust sediments (n = 45), and muscular tissue of feeder pigs (n = 42) were analysed for the concentrations of PCB (sum of 7 indicator congeners), DDT (sum of 6 isomers), and lindane (g-hexachlorocyclohexane). The concentrations of lindane showed increasing tendencies in feed mixtures (1995–1999), drinking water (1997–1999), barn dust sediments (1996–1998), and pork (1997–1999). The limit of permissi-ble concentrations (hereinafter limit) was exceeded in two samples of feed mixtures collected in 1994. The limit for DDT was exceeded in two samples of feed mixtures collected in 1994. Generally, the concentrations showed a decreasing tendency in feed mixtures and barn dust sediments (1997–1999) and regular fluctuations in pork. The limit for PCB was exceeded in two samples of feed mixtures collected in 1994 and in one sample of drink-ing water collected in 1995. The concentrations showed increasing tendencies in feed mixtures (1995–1998) and pork (1996–1998). Decreasing tendencies were observed in drinking water (1995–1999) and barn dust sediments (1994–1997). Compared with mean values for the Czech Republic, the concentrations of lindane were higher in feed samples collected in 1994, 1997, and 1998, in drinking water samples collected in 1994 and 1995, and in pork samples collected in 1994–1998, the concentrations of DDT were higher in feed samples collected in 1994, 1997, and 1998, drinking water samples collected in 1995, and pork samples collected in 1994 and 1996–1998, and the concentrations of PCB were higher in feed samples collected in 1997 and 1998, in drinking water samples collected in 1994 and 1995, and in pork samples collected in 1996–1998. The health risk of DDT, lindane, and PCB has been assessed as moderate, medium, and moderately increased, respectively.
