Abstract:
We consider the numerical approximation of stochastic differential equations interpreted both in the It^o and Stratonovich sense and develop three stochastic time-integration techniques based on the deterministic exponential time differencing schemes. Two of the numerical schemes are suited for the simulations of It^o stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs) and they are referred to as the stochastic exponential time differencing schemes, SETD0 and SETD1. The third numerical scheme is a new numerical method we propose for the simulations of Stratonovich SODEs. We call this scheme, the Exponential Stratonovich Integrator (ESI). We investigate numerically the convergence of these three numerical methods, in addition to three standard approximation schemes and also compare the accuracy and efficiency of these schemes. The effect of small noise is also studied. We study the theoretical convergence of the stochastic exponential time differencing scheme (SETD0) for parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with infinite-dimensional additive noise and one-dimensional multiplicative noise. We obtain a strong error temporal estimate of O(¢tµ + ²¢tµ + ²2¢t1=2) for SPDEs forced with a one-dimensional multiplicative noise and also obtain a strong error temporal estimate of O(¢tµ + ²2¢t) for SPDEs forced with an infinite-dimensional additive noise. We examine convergence for second-order and fourth-order SPDEs. We consider the effects of spatially correlated and uncorrelated noise on bifurcations for SPDEs. In particular, we study a fourth-order SPDE, the Swift-Hohenberg equation, and allow the control parameter to fluctuate. Numerical simulations show a shift in the pinning region with multiplicative noise.

Abstract:
We study numerically the pattern selection process in the Swift-Hohenberg equation with periodic boundary conditions. Two approaches were used for analyzing the emergence of the pattern: counting defects as a function of time and the determination ofthe dominant mode in Fourier space selected by the system, starting from diverse initial conditions. We and that the region of stability for patterns is limited by a secondary instability (the Eckhaus instability). The number of defects decays as a power-law with time. Although pairwise annihilation of defects should in principal generate power-law decay, this mechanism does not appear to apply in the present case. We seek, as well, to control the pattern through a feedback scheme, to selectively stabilize a mode different from the one with the highest growth rate. Keywords: convection, patterns, hydrodynamic instability

Abstract:
Mean flows are known to play an important role in the dynamics of the Spiral Defect Chaos state and in the existence of the skew-varicose instability in Rayleigh-Bernard Convection. SDC only happens in large domains, so computations involving the full three-dimensional PDEs for convection are very time-consuming. We therefore explore the phenomena of Spiral Defect Chaos and the skew-varicose instability in Generalized Swift-Hohenberg (GSH) models that include the effects of long-range mean flows. Our analysis is aimed at linking the two phenomena. We apply analytical and numerical methods to study the linear stability of stripe patterns in two generalizations of the two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation that include coupling to a mean flow. A projection operator is included in our models to allow exact stripe solutions. In the generalized models, stripes become unstable to the skew-varicose, oscillatory skew-varicose and cross-roll instabilities, in addition to the usual Eckhaus and zigzag instabilities. We analytically derive stability boundaries for the skew varicose instability in various cases, including several asymptotic limits. Close to the onset of pattern formation, the skew varicose instability has the same dependence on wave number as the Eckhaus instability provided the coupling to the mean flow is greater than a critical value. We use numerical techniques to determine eigenvalues and hence stability boundaries of other instabilities. We extend our analysis to both stress-free and no-slip boundary conditions and we note a cross-over from the behaviour characteristic of no-slip to that of stress-free boundaries as the coupling to the mean flow increases or as the Prandtl number decreases. The region of stable stripes is completely eliminated by the cross-roll instability for large coupling to the mean flow or small Prandtl number. We characterize the nonlinear evolution of the modes that are responsible for the skew varicose instability in order to understand whether the bifurcation from stable stripes at the skew-varicose instability is supercritical or subcritical. The systems of ODEs, which are derived from the PDEs by selecting 3 relevant modes and truncating, show that the skew-varicose instability is supercritical whereas for an extension with 5 relevant modes shows the skew-varicose instability is subcritical. We solve the PDEs of one GSH model in spatially-extended domains for very long times, much longer than previous efforts in the literature. We are able to investigate the influence of domain size and other parameters much more systematically, and to develop a criterion for when the spiral defect chaos state could be expected to persist in the long time limit. The importance of the mean flow can be adjusted via the Prandtl number or parameter that accounts for the fluid boundary conditions on the horizontal surfaces in a convecting layer and hence we establish a relation between these parameters that preserves the same pattern. We further analyze the onset of chaotic state, and its dependence on the Prandtl number and the domain size. An outstanding issue in the understanding of SDC is that it exists at parameter values where simple straight roll convection is also stable, and the region of co-existence increases as the domain size increases. The results of our numerical simulations are coupled with the analysis of the skew-varicose instability of the straight-roll pattern in the Generalized Swift-Hohenberg equation, allowing us to identify the role that skew-varicose events in local patches of stripes play in maintaining Spiral Defect Chaos.

For a long time it was believed that polymers were materials which didn't have any conductive properties associated to them. However, several studies has been made through the years to show the birth of a new class of polymeric materials, known as intrinsically conductive polymers. This class of polymers generally consist of chains having a conjugation structure, with alternating double and single bonds of carbon atoms. This combination allows electronic transport through the polyaniline structure. Since polyaniline represents a many-particle system, we present an introduction to the Schrodinger equation, the Thomas-Fermi theory, an to the Khon-Sham equations, which are important to understand the methods used, in order to calculate the electronic transport properties of doped polyaniline with different chloride contents. To calculate the electronic structure and electronic transport properties, we used the first principles, also known as textit ab-initio method , by the density functional theory technique (DFT). The electronic properties of polyaniline were studied through the bands diagram, density of states per atom and orbital, charge density, transmittance and electrical current for each state of oxidation/reduction of this conjugated polymer. The results obtained show a good qualitatively agreement with the experimental results. It was possible to observe the transition process of polyanilines, affording to obtain the semiconductor and insulating phases, as shown in the bands diagrams and electric current spectra.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis contains four articles related to mathematical aspects of Density Functional Theory. In Paper A, the theoretical justification of density methods formulated with current densities is addressed. It is shown that the set of ground-states is determined by the ensemble-representable particle and paramagnetic current density. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the Schrödinger equation with a magnetic field is not uniquely determined by its ground-state solution. Thus, a wavefunction may be the ground-state of two different Hamiltonians, where the Hamiltonians differ by more than a gauge transformation. This implies that the particle and paramagnetic current density do not determine the potentials of the system and, consequently, no Hohenberg-Kohn theorem exists for Current Density Functional Theory formulated with the paramagnetic current density. On the other hand, by instead using the particle density as data, we show that the scalar potential in the system's Hamiltonian is determined for a fixed magnetic field. This means that the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem continues to hold in the presence of a magnetic field, if the magnetic field has been fixed. Paper B deals with N-representable density functionals that also depend on the paramagnetic current density. Here the Levy-Lieb density functional is generalized to include the paramagnetic current density. It is shown that a wavefunction exists that minimizes the "free" Hamiltonian subject to the constraints that the particle and paramagnetic current density are held fixed. Furthermore, a convex and universal current density functional is introduced and shown to equal the convex envelope of the generalized Levy-Lieb density functional. Since this functional is convex, the problem of finding the particle and paramagnetic current density that minimize the energy is related to a set of Euler-Lagrange equations. In Paper C, an N-representable Kohn-Sham approach is developed that also include the paramagnetic current density. It is demonstrated that a wavefunction exists that minimizes the kinetic energy subject to the constraint that only determinant wavefunctions are considered, as well as that the particle and paramagnetic current density are held fixed. Using this result, it is then shown that the ground-state energy can be obtained by minimizing an energy functional over all determinant wavefunctions that have finite kinetic energy. Moreover, the minimum is achieved and this determinant wavefunction gives the ground-state particle and paramagnetic current density. Lastly, Paper D addresses the issue of a Hohenberg-Kohn variational principle for Current Density Functional Theory formulated with the total current density. Under the assumption that a Hohenberg-Kohn theorem exists formulated with the total current density, it is shown that the map from particle and total current density to the vector potential enters explicitly in the energy functional to be minimized. Thus, no variational principle as that of Hohenberg and Kohn exists for density methods formulated with the total current density.

Wide oscillation finite time blow up for solutions to nonlinear fourth order differential equations. Arch. Ration. Mech.
Fourth order differential equations appear naturally when modeling oscillations in elastic structures such as those observed in suspension bridges. Two models describing oscillations in the roadway of a bridge are considered. In the one-dimensional model we study finite space blow up of solutions for a class of fourth order differential equations. The results answer a conjecture presented in [F. Gazzola and R. Pavani. Wide oscillation finite time blow up for solutions to nonlinear fourth order differential equations. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 207(2):717752, 2013] and imply the nonexistence of beam oscillation given by traveling wave profile with low speed propagation. In the two-dimensional model we analyze a nonlocal equation for a thin narrow prestressed rectangular plate where the two short edges are hinged and the two long edges are free. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solution and we study its asymptotic behavior under viscous damping. We also study the stability of simple modes of oscillations which are classified as longitudinal or torsional.

The Atlantic Forest and the Caatinga are ecosystems where bromeliads have high species diversity. Such a morphological diversity has been attributed to evolutionary events via adaptive radiation. Because it is a morphologically polymorphic group, the species delimitation and the knowledge of its evolution are still elementary. This study aimed to apply DNA molecular markers in population and phylogenetic level in the Brazilian genera Encholirium and Hohenbergia aiming to highlight the evolutionary effects on populations and on the phylogeny of these bromeliads groups. The first studied species was Encholirium spectabile, evaluated at the population level with microsatellite markers. The sampled populations exhibited a great diversity of morphological characters following a geographical pattern. We tested the hypothesis that genetic diversity is as large as to morphologic. Our results suggested high genetic diversity in a uniform distribution, consistent with the expected for inselberg species. However, some populations of Sergipe presented an increased genetic isolation with higher FST values when compared with populations from the Borborema Plateau and northern Espinhaço Range. Based on these results, we suggest that populations of Sergipe comprise a cryptic lineage. The second species studied at the population level was E. magalhaesii that occurs in the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais. Sampling was carried out at four sites. SSR markers applied to these populations revealed low levels up to no genetic structuring, with moderate levels of diversity in equilibrium. The comparison between both scenarios allowed us to conclude that gene flow in the Campos Rupestres tends to be more effective than between inselbergs, indicating that effects caused by the surrounding matrix of inselbergs would not exist in the Campos Rupestres environment. Our studies continued with the genus Hohenbergia, for which we used DNA sequences to generate a molecular phylogeny, including three nuclear (PhyC, ETS and AGT1) and two chloroplast (ycf1_1 e ycf1_6) sequences. Besides the observation of groups with geographical patterns, the phylogeny of this genus clustered morphologically dissimilar species, suggesting that Hohenbergia comprises a recent group from the evolutionary point of view, requiring the insertion of additional sequences to improve the support of the branches in phylogeny generated. Thereby it is proposed that Hohenbergia would be susceptible to population fluctuations caused by climate change in the Pleistocene period. Based on the distribution of the taxa, scenarios were modeled for three periods and correlated with the generated phylogeny. The ancestral environment reconstruction indicates that Hohenbergia possibly originated in the Atlantic Forest with successive migrations to Caatinga. The fact that we used two genera from different subfamilies allowed us to recognize different evolutionary patterns, suggesting a complex evolution within Bromeliaceae in Caatinga and Atlantic Forest environments. This work also generated the description of a new specie for the genus Hohenbergia from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Hohenbergia isepponae.

Abstract:

Abstract:
My doctoral thesis addresses the spiritual and intellectual activity of women during the scholastic period. I have focused on Herrad of Hohenbourg (d. after 1196) and on the Hortus deliciarum, the encyclopaedia manuscript that was produced at the Alsatian monastery of which she was abbess. This volume was designed as a didactic work for use within a small community of Augustinian nuns. Although similar in concept to contemporary sentence collections, the Hortus is singular in that it was intended for the edification of women, rather than men. The existence of this text belies the traditional belief that women remained uneducated for much of the medieval period. My study of Herrad has forced a re-examination of women's intellectual achievements during the medieval period. Of the three major female religious writers of the twelfth century - Hildegard of Bingen (d. 1179), Elisabeth of Schönau (d. 1164) and Herrad - only the first two have been subjects of recent scholarship. The writings of these two women grew out of a particular form of spirituality: they are deeply personal and visionary. Their works stand in sharp contrast to that of Herrad. Hildegard and Elisabeth experienced God personally and recorded their experiences, while Herrad approached theology as an academic subject. She aligned herself with the intellectual environment of the emerging universities. In her spirituality as in her writing, Herrad differed from her contemporaries. She exhibited none of the affective traits that have come to be associated with medieval women. Unlike Hildegard and Elisabeth, who experienced the divine through frailty and ill-health, Herrad refused to view herself as the weaker vessel, claiming authority, like men, on the basis of her extensive learning. Herrad's significance in the debate over medieval women's religious and intellectual experiences is two-fold. In the first place, she presents a corrective to the traditional view which has held the interest and participation of women in scholarly endeavours to be a development of the modern period. The Hortus, as it was a text which was written by a woman for the education of women, stands as a monument to the role of women in intellectual discourse as early as the twelfth century. In the second place, Herrad stands as a check to the current enthusiasm for the model of 'female' spirituality which was presented in biographies of women which were written by medieval men.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis "The Chotek Family and Sophie Chotek" deals with the development of a traditional Czech noble family from the first historical record to the last members of the family who died in 70's of 20th century. Central person of the thesis is Sophie Chotek, the best known woman of the family, who lived from 1868 to 1914. We can read about her life of a single young noblewoman during her service in Bratislava, where she was as a maid-of-honour and where she met her future husband archduke Francis Ferdinand d'Este. They got married on 1st July 1900. The last part of the thesis speaks about fourteen years of marriage. The greater part of this happy time they spent in the Konopiště Castle in Central Bohemia. Sophie and Francis Ferdinand also had three children Sophie, Maxmilian and Ernst of Hohenberg, whose life stories are included, too.

Abstract:
The Hortus deliciarum (ca. 1170-ca. 1194, destroyed 1870) was an encyclopedic salvation history created for the canonesses at the Augustinian convent of Hohenburg by their abbess Herrad. Despite the strong role of images in the canonesses’ reception of the manuscript, the Hortus illuminations have thus far not merited a critical consideration. In this thesis, I analyze major individual illuminations in the Hortus as well as the manuscript’s entire structure, and I suggest that Herrad designed the Hortus around contemporary apocalyptic ideas, such as those of Joachim of Fiore, while also illustrating the importance of debate and discussion to the body Christian. The overall composition of the Hortus showed the canonesses that God has chosen to share his knowledge with them. In significant individual images, Herrad expressed that they were to exercise this divine knowledge through debate of theological principles. In the Hortus, debate was shown as originating with Christianity’s Jewish desert predecessors, and the canonesses were encouraged to consider themselves as heirs of this intellectual tradition. Debate appeared as endemic to Christianity and essential to the continued life and prosperity of the Church. In stressing the importance of intellectual activity, while also implying that the canonesses were part of the intellectual elect, the Hortus exerted power that transgressed the library walls and affected the ways the Hohenbourg canonesses performed their faith and understood their responsibility as Christians.
