Abstract:
Detection of antibody reactivity to appropriate, specific parasite antigens may constitute a sensitive and cost-effective alternative to current tools to monitor malaria transmission across different endemicity settings. This study aimed to determine the suitability of IgG responses to a number of P. falciparum antigens as markers of transmission intensity and pattern. Antibody responses to multiple malaria antigens were determined in 905 participants aged 1–12 years from three districts with low (Keta), medium (Hohoe) and high (Krachi) transmission intensity in the Volta region of Ghana. Blood film microscopy slides and dry blood spots (DBS) were obtained for parasitaemia detection and antibody measurement, respectively. Sera were eluted from DBS and levels of IgG specific for 10 malaria antigens determined by a multiplex assay. Results were compared within and among the districts. Total IgG responses to MSPDBL1, MSPDBLLeucine, MSP2-FC27, RAMA, and PfRh2a and PfRh2b were higher in Krachi than in Hohoe and Keta. Seroprevalence of IgG specific for MSPDBLLeucine, RON4, and PfRh2b were also highest in Krachi. Responses to RALP-1, PfRh2a and PfRh2b were associated with patent but asymptomatic parasitaemia in Keta, while responses to MSPDBL1, MSPDBLLeucine, MSP2-FC27, RAMA, Rh2-2030, and PfRh2b were associated with parasite carriage in Hohoe, but not in Krachi. Using ROC analysis, only PfRh2b was found to predict patent, but asymptomatic, parasitaemia in Keta and Hohoe. Antibody breadth correlated positively with age (r = 0.29, p<0.0001) and parasitaemia (β = 3.91; CI = 1.53 to 6.29), and medium to high transmission (p<0.0001). Our findings suggest differences in malaria-specific antibody responses across the three transmission zones and that PfRh2b has potential as a marker of malaria transmission intensity and pattern. This could have implications for malaria control programs and vaccine trials.

AbstractVaccine trials for infectious diseases take place in a milieu of trust in which scientists, regulatory institutions, and volunteers trust each other to play traditional roles. This milieu of trust emerges from a combination of preexisting linkages embedded in the local and national political context. Using the case of failed vaccine trials in Hohoe, Ghana, we explore this milieu of trust by employing the concept of tandems of trust and control, with a particular focus on the perceived characteristics of the disease and the linkages formed. An analysis of qualitative interviews collected in Hohoe following the West Africa Ebola outbreak of 2014–2016 shows that the trust/control nexus in vaccine trials precedes the implementation of those trials, while both the characteristics of Ebola and the political context shaped the formation and breakdown of relationships in the trial network.

Abstract:
<p>Water is considered as a lifeline of all living things, especially humans; hence its availability is a critical component in the measurement of human wellbeing through the Human Development Index (HDI). Its production and distribution in Ghana, particularly in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region is a challenge. This study seeks to identify the best-fit time series model to the water consumption data in the Hohoe Municipality and to forecast water consumption in the Municipality. This underpins the development of a time-series model for forecasting water consumption levels of the residents, institutions and businesses in the municipality. Several time series models, including AR, MA, ARMA, ARIMA and SARIMA were fitted to the data, and it emerged that the most adequate model for the data was ARIMA (2, 1, and 2). The model was then used to forecast the consumption for the next four years, to advise Ghana Water Company Limited in the municipality to meet the demand of the people.</p>

<p><em>The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a person consumes at least 400g of Fruit and Vegetable (FV) daily to prevent chronic disease risk. We assessed knowledge of current WHO guidelines and other determinants of FV intake among adults (? 18 years, n = 397) in Hohoe Municipality, Ghana. Face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire adopted from </em><em>WHO Risk Factor Surveillance System were undertaken. </em><em>Knowledge of FV daily servings and determinants of intake were evaluated by descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression. There was a 99.2% response rate with approximately 9</em><em>% </em><em>of participants correctly stating the WHO daily recommended amount (P </em><em>=</em><em> </em><em>.</em><em>296</em><em>)</em><em>. Most (54%) of respondents’ FV intake was affected by unavailability of desired choice (</em><em>P </em><em>=</em><em> .050)</em><em>. Odds of inadequate consumption for persons aware of adequate intake amount was 1.97 (95% CI: 0.64, 6.05, P = .234) higher than persons without awareness. Participants with problems accessing their desired choice of FV had 0.59 odds (95% CI: 0.36, 0.95, P = .030) of consuming inadequate amount compared to those with easy access. Adequate FV intake depends on availability of consumer prefered choice regardless of knowledge of recommendations. Individual home based FV cultivation is relevant for availability of preferred choice and adequate consumption for NCDs risk reductions among Ghanaians.</em></p>

Abstract:
Malaria and anaemia are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide (WHO, 1986) and are the main disease burdens in sub-Saharan Africa. Severe malaria and anaemia are often fatal, while moderate anaemia in childhood is associated with impaired physical and mental development. One promising approach to the prevention of malaria is the administration of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) to infants (IPTi) or to children under five years old (IPTc). This involves administration of a predefined number of treatment courses of antimalarial drugs at specified time intervals. Although IPTi has been shown to be efficacious in reducing the incidence of malaria in infants, this strategy may not be adequate to reduce the burden of malaria in children because in many parts of Africa the burden of malaria is high in children under five years of age not just in infants. Furthermore, in highly seasonal transmission areas of West Africa targeting IPT during the high transmission season is more appropriate than administering IPT throughout the year. There is now some evidence from Mali and Senegal that seasonal IPTc can reduce the burden of malaria substantially in Sahelian West Africa. The IPTc studies done so far have been carried out in areas with an intense but short transmission season. Furthermore resistance to SP, the drug commonly used for IPT is increasing. Thus, there is a need to assess the efficacy of IPTc in an area of intense transmission with a prolonged seasonal peak of malaria transmission and to find alternative drugs or drug combinations for IPTc. Hence, a randomised, controlled trial of amodiaquine plus artesunate (AQ+AS), given at two different intervals (monthly or bimonthly), SP alone bimonthly or placebo to children aged 3- 59 months during the high malaria transmission season was conducted in Ghana in 2005-2006. The protective efficacy of IPTc against malaria and anaemia was assessed during the intervention period and one year post intervention period to determine if there was any rebound in the incidence of malaria or anaemia after stopping IPTc. A total of 2451 children were enrolled from 30 villages and randomly assigned to four arms. The number of children assigned to each arm and followed up to six months was 650 to placebo, 613 to SP bimonthly, 562 to AQ+AS bimonthly and 626 to AQ+AS monthly. The follow up rate was high (range 92%-95%) and was comparable between groups. IPTc provided protection against clinical malaria and anaemia in children less than five years of age. Monthly AQ+AS IPTc reduced the incidence of malaria by 75% (95% Cl: 65%-83%) and anaemia 58% (95% Cl: 33%-74%), bimonthly SP reduced the incidence of malaria 35% (95% Cl: 17%-49%) and anaemia 45% (95% Cl: 15%-65%) and bimonthly AQ+AS reduced the incidence of malaria 30% (95% Cl: 11%-46%) and anaemia 24% (95% Cl: 14%-50%) compared to placebo. Episodes of hospital admissions with severe malaria were reduced by 62% (95% Cl: 5%-86%) in the AQ+AS monthly, 39% in SP bimonthly (95% Cl: -36%-74%) and 58% in the AQ+AS bimonthly group (95% Cl: 5%-85). There was no significant increase in the incidence of clinical malaria with any parasitaemia or high density parasitaemia in the dry and rainy seasons following IPTc intervention in older children (12-59 months). However, there was a slight increase in the incidence of clinical malaria with any parasitaemia or high density parasitaemia in infants (3-11months) in the rainy season following IPTc intervention. IPTc using any of the three treatment regimens was cost effective and scaling up to cover more children reduced cost drastically. The intervention was found to be acceptable to the community. We conclude that IPTc is safe and efficacious even in areas with a prolonged intense transmission season. IPTc, when combined with other interventions such as the use of insecticide treated bednets and home management of malaria, will reduce the burden of malaria in West Africa.

Die Qualität des Arbeitslebens ist eine wichtige Dimension der Lebensqualität und findet in vielen modernen Wohlfahrtsmaßen Berücksichtigung. Sowohl objektive als auch subjektive Indikatoren kommen bei der Messung der Arbeitsplatzqualität zur Anwendung. Anhand von Daten einer Bevölkerungsbefragung wird gezeigt, dass von hoher Arbeitszufriedenheit, die mittels Single-Item-Fragen gemessen wird, nicht einfach auf gute Arbeitsbedingungen geschlossen werden kann. Arbeitszufriedenheit erweist sich als komplexes Konstrukt, in dem Adaptions- und Vergleichsprozesse eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

ZusammenfassungDie Stadt- und Staatstheater als die am höchsten geförderten Kultureinrichtungen in Deutschland stehen in besonderer Weise unter Legitimationsdruck und benötigen ausreichend Rückhalt bei relevanten Stakeholdern, bei Publikum und in der Bevölkerung. Welches Interesse an Theatern und welche Einstellungen zu deren Aufgaben und deren öffentlicher Förderung gibt es in der Bevölkerung in Deutschland? Der Artikel präsentiert und diskutiert die Ergebnisse einer repräsentativen Bevölkerungsbefragung, die zeigt, dass zwar nur wenige zu den regelmäßigen Besucher*innen von Theatern gehören – darunter eher hoch gebildete, eher ältere und eher weibliche Personen – eine große Bevölkerungsmehrheit sich jedoch für eine weiterhin hohe öffentliche Förderung ausspricht. Von den Theatern werden vor allem eine hohe Zugänglichkeit sowie Programme kultureller Bildung für Kinder und Jugendliche erwartet. Die hohe Zustimmung zur Theaterförderung, weit über den Kreis des Publikums hinaus, verweist auf die hohe gesellschaftliche Bedeutung, die den Theatern zugeschrieben wird. Zugleich deuten sich erste Risse dieses positiven Theaterbildes bei den jüngeren Generationen an.

Daher droht vielen Kommunen kurzfristig eine finanzielle Notlage. Dies zu verhindern ist in erster Linie die Verantwortung der Länder. Aufgrund des historischen Ausmaßes der Krise kann auch der Bund zeitlich begrenzt zur Stabilisierung der Kommunalfinanzen beitragen. Dieser Beitrag ist eine überarbeitete Fassung einer Stellungnahme des Autors als Sachverständiger im Rahmen einer öffentlichen Anhörung des Haushaltsausschusses des Deutschen Bundestages am 7. Verschiedene Studien geben schon erste Hinweise darauf, dass gegenwartsorientierte Verlaufsanpassungen keine Einzelfälle, sondern möglicherweise der Normalfall bei Finanzmarktprognose-Zeitreihen sein könnten. Allerdings beschränken sich einige dieser Studien auf die Betrachtung von nur wenigen Prognosezeitreihen. Andere Untersuchungen betrachten verhältnismäßig kurze Prognosezeitreihen. Die meisten Studien setzen sich lediglich mit Prognosen zu einzelnen nationalen Finanzmarktsegmenten auseinander. Es fehlt also eine große, international vergleichende Studie, die eine hohe Zahl langer Prognosezeitreihen untersucht. Die vorliegende Untersuchung soll diese Forschungslücke schließen. Im Folgenden werden 158.022 Zinsprognosen in 1.182 Prognosezeitreihen aus zwölf verschiedenen Nationen untersucht. Erst diese umfassende Datenauswertung macht es möglich, zu einer gesicherten Einschätzung darüber zu kommen, wie häufig gegenwartsorientierte Verlaufsanpassungen auftreten. Außerdem wird überprüft, ob es unabhängig vom Prognosehorizont, vom Kapitalmarktsegment und von den betrachteten Ländern zu gegenwartsorientierten Verlaufsanpassungen kommt. Das zweite Kapitel stellt die Datenbasis und die verwendete Methodik vor. Das dritte Kapitel ist der Ergebnisdarstellung vorbehalten. Das vierte Kapitel zeigt mögliche Ursachen für gegenwartsorientierte Verlaufsanpassungen auf. Eine Zusammenfassung findet sich im fünften Kapitel.

Die Nutzung verfügbarer Radverkehrsdaten auf GPS-Basis stellt eine preisgünstige Möglichkeit für Kommunen dar, einen Überblick über das Nutzungsverhalten ihrer Radfahrenden zu erhalten. Mit den vorliegenden Ergebnissen soll eine Lücke bei der Interpretation von GPS-basierten Daten geschlossen werden. Die Radfahrtypologie auf Basis des geäußerten Verhaltens kann dabei helfen, GPS-Daten auch ohne detaillierte Kenntnisse der zugrundeliegenden Nutzergruppen zielgenauer zu interpretieren. Damit können zukünftig Kommunen die Potenziale entstehender oder bereits vorhandener Angebote an GPS-Radverkehrsdaten zielführender nutzen und ihre Radverkehrsinfrastruktur besser darauf abstimmen. In einem ersten Schritt wurde auf Basis einer Befragung eine empirisch belegte und wissenschaftlich hergeleitete multidimensionale Typologisierung von Radfahrenden erstellt. Anschließend wurde eine umfangreiche heterogene Probandengruppe mit unterschiedlichen soziodemografischen Ausprägungen mit Geräten für die Aufzeichnung ihrer Radrouten ausgestattet. Das auf diesem Weg erhobene Radverkehrsverhalten wurde, gestützt durch kontinuierliche begleitende Befragungen, ausgewertet und anhand unterschiedlicher Indikatoren beschrieben. Damit wurden Präferenzen einzelner Gruppen, z. B. im Hinblick auf Geschwindigkeit, Streckenlänge, Typ der Radverkehrsinfrastruktur, Fahrtzweck oder Routenwahl identifiziert. Auf Basis einer Onlineumfrage konnten vier unterschiedliche Typen von Radfahrenden beschrieben werden, die sich hinsichtlich der Nutzungshäufigkeit, zurückgelegter Entfernungen, Fahrverhalten, Sicherheitsempfinden, Identifikation als Radfahrerende, Wetterabhängigkeit und in motivationalen Aspekten unterscheiden. Anhand der unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen in diesen Merkmalen werden sie als die ambitionierten, die funktionellen, die pragmatischen und die passionierten Radfahrenden bezeichnet. Bezogen auf das Verkehrsverhalten steigt die Nutzungshäufigkeit von ambitionierten über passionierte und pragmatische Radfahrende an. Funktionelle Radfahrende geben die mit Abstand geringste Fahrradnutzung unter allen vier Typen an. Hinsichtlich der angegebenen Distanzen, die zurückgelegt werden, liegen passionierte, pragmatische und funktionelle Radfahrende dicht beieinander. Ambitionierte Radfahrende gaben dagegen an, deutlich größere Distanzen zurückzulegen. Die Ergebnisse aus der Umfrage zeigten sich in einer anschließenden Felduntersuchung in abgeschwächter Form. Insbesondere der ambitionierte Radfahrtyp lässt sich durch höhere Tageskilometerwerte, Geschwindigkeiten und Beschleunigungen von den anderen Typen abgrenzen. Bei den anderen Typen ist eine Unterscheidung weniger ausgeprägt. Hier zeigte sich, dass vor allem die Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Altersgruppe einen Einfluss auf das Fahrverhalten hat. In Übereinstimmung mit bisherigen Erkenntnissen zeigte sich, dass mit zunehmendem Alter tendenziell etwas langsamer und stetiger gefahren wird. Ebenso radeln auch weibliche Personen etwas langsamer und stetiger als männliche Radfahrer. In der Nutzerbefragung zeigten sich geringe Unterschiede für die Präferenz bei der Infrastrukturnutzung zwischen den Typen, z.B. bei funktionellen Radfahrenden, die eine getrennte Führung im Seitenraum bevorzugen. In der Feldstudie wurde dies ebenfalls untersucht. Auch hier zeigten sich nur geringe Unterschiede. Die Ergebnisse werden auch vor dem Hintergrund eines, eventuell durch die Versuchssituation veränderten Fahrverhaltens der teilnehmenden Radfahrenden, diskutiert. Es konnte vor allem eine hohe Nutzungsfrequenz und Häufigkeit beobachtet werden, die die angegebenen Werte aus der Typenbefragung übertrafen. Für die Nutzung von GPS-Daten für die Radverkehrsplanung wird aus den Ergebnissen abgeleitet, dass eine mögliche Skalierung beziehungsweise Wichtung von Daten entlang soziodemografischer Faktoren die größten Potenziale bietet.
