Abstract:
Recent investigations at the Bostrom site in southwestern Illinois demonstrate that the site was occupied by at least three successive groups of Paleo-Indians: Clovis, Gainey, and Holcombe. Of the artifacts for which lithic raw materials were identified, Clovis tools are manufactured from stone that was procured up to 1500 km from the site. Gainey and Holcombe artifacts, on the other hand, are manufactured from stone whose source areas occur within a radius of 300 km from the site. Early Archaic, Dalton artifacts are manufactured from stone procured within 150 km of the site. These lithic resource procurement patterns suggest that there is a dramatic fall-off in mobility, social interaction, or both, after the initial peopling of the area. The presence of Great Lakes and Northeastern tool types at this southerly latitude suggests that the Gainey and Holcombe economies were much broader than the stereotypical model of a caribou-based subsistence strategy.

Full text
Abstract:
Environmental factors influenced Paleo-Indian occupation in northern portions of North America. Glacial features posed physical restrictions while revegetation on the post-glacial landscape limited available resources. Areas of northern Minnesota were ice-free by 13,500 B.P. with lake formation and revegetation at 12,000 to 11,000 B.P. By 11,200 B.P. northeastern Minnesota was probably habitable. However, archaeological evidence for early Paleo-Indian occupation in the area is sparse. Fluted and Holcombe-like projectile points have only been reported from three localities; well-dated sites are lacking at present, in contrast to the evidence for Late Paleo-Indian occupation. However, rugged terrain and thick vegetation hamper survey and bias the record toward accessible locations—those on modern waterways. A survey strategy based on the immediate post-glacial landscape needs to be implemented to address the question of earliest occupation. In addition, the problem of charcoal dates that are widely divergent from associated cultural remains must be addressed.

Abstract:
This research paper assignment on the 2016 Indiana gubernatorial election was done in two parts. The first part (not included) was on predicting the winner of this election. My prediction for the Democratic candidate, John Gregg, was incorrect. This essay is the follow-up analysis (written within two weeks after the election results) of what transpired during the election in relation to my prediction. I argue that the Eric Holcomb win and Gregg loss was due to the larger national Republican victory, a lack of Democratic campaigning power in Indiana, Gregg’s (over)emphasis of LGBT rights, his dismay for the RFRA, and Holcomb’s optimistic economic plans. Gregg’s connection to Mike Pence is also discussed as a defining factor of his win. Demographics of the Indiana exit polls are also considered. While the race was polled, and reported as a toss-up in the weeks before the election, in hindsight, a Republican Governor winning in a largely Republican state is a logical conclusion.

Abstract:
Changes in solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation have been proposed as a possible factor contributing to seeming increases in hind-limb malformations in anuran amphibians in North America. One purpose of this study was to reproduce results from an earlier experiment (G.T. Ankley, J.E. Tietge, D.L. DeFoe, K.M. Jensen, G.W. Holcombe, E.J. Durhan, and S.A. Diamond. 1998. Environ. Toxicol. Chem. 17: 2530–2542) in which Rana pipiens (northern leopard frog) developed hind-limb ectromelia and ectrodactyly when exposed to an artificial source of UV radiation in the laboratory. Additionally, we sought to assess the effects of natural sunlight on survival and development in this species. Animals exposed to UV radiation in the laboratory from stage 25–26 (just prior to hind-limb development) through forelimb emergence exhibited a dose-dependent elevation of hind-limb dysmorphogenesis. The observed malformations usually were bilateral and typically symmetrical, and consisted primarily of missing and reduced digits. Exposure of animals at this life stage to full intensity natural sunlight caused significant mortality, while exposure to screened sunlight (ca. 50–60% of ambient) resulted in an elevated incidence of abnormal hind limb pathology (ectromelia, ectrodactyly) identical to that observed in organisms exposed to UV radiation in the laboratory. Owing to uncertainties in dose extrapolation, for example, in the context of animal behavior, the potential significance of our results in terms of explaining adverse effects in amphibians from the field is as yet unclear.

Abstract:
The visual system is extremely efficient at detecting events across time even at very fast presentation rates; however, discriminating the identity of those events is much slower and requires attention over time, a mechanism with a much coarser resolution [Cavanagh, P., Battelli, L., & Holcombe, A. O. Dynamic attention. In A. C. Nobre & S. Kastner (Eds.), The Oxford handbook of attention (pp. 652–675). Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2013]. Patients affected by right parietal lesion, including the TPJ, are severely impaired in discriminating events across time in both visual fields [Battelli, L., Cavanagh, P., & Thornton, I. M. Perception of biological motion in parietal patients. Neuropsychologia, 41, 1808–1816, 2003]. One way to test this ability is to use a simultaneity judgment task, whereby participants are asked to indicate whether two events occurred simultaneously or not. We psychophysically varied the frequency rate of four flickering disks, and on most of the trials, one disk (either in the left or right visual field) was flickering out-of-phase relative to the others. We asked participants to report whether two left-or-right-presented disks were simultaneous or not. We tested a total of 23 right and left parietal lesion patients in Experiment 1, and only right parietal patients showed impairment in both visual fields while their low-level visual functions were normal. Importantly, to causally link the right TPJ to the relative timing processing, we ran a TMS experiment on healthy participants. Participants underwent three stimulation sessions and performed the same simultaneity judgment task before and after 20 min of low-frequency inhibitory TMS over right TPJ, left TPJ, or early visual area as a control. rTMS over the right TPJ caused a bilateral impairment in the simultaneity judgment task, whereas rTMS over left TPJ or over early visual area did not affect performance. Altogether, our results directly link the right TPJ to the processing of relative time.

Abstract:
This article focuses on a little-known contribution to Allied victory in Europe after D-Day by a part of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the Special Counterintelligence (SCI) teams of the X-2 (Counterintelligence) Branch. Using a combination of private papers, unpublished studies, and OSS records, the author looks through the eyes of the commander of the SCI teams, Frank P. Holcomb, son of wartime Commandant General Thomas Holcomb. A Marine Corps reservist and OSS officer, Holcomb received a rudimentary orientation from the British in counterespionage and deception operations before creating his own highly successful units to perform those missions. In short order, the OSS went from having almost no such capability to neutralizing every German stay-behind agent in France and Belgium and turning a number of them back against the enemy to feed the Third Reich deceptive reports, accepted as genuine, thereby making a significant contribution to the security of the Allied armies. This article offers examples of OSS successes as testament to the skill and fortitude of a Marine Reserve officer serving on independent duty.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that an implication of Holcombe’s (2002) model is a “revolution trap.” This paper extends Holcombe’s model adding Klein’s concept of entrepreneurship as judgment concerning the use of heterogeneous political capital. The authors use the case of the USA presidential election of 1800 to demonstrate the utility of the extension, and to discuss how political entrepreneurship served to prevent a revolution trap. The political entrepreneurship of 1800 established the precedent of peaceful transition of power in the USA, which opened the door to the rapid economic development of the early nineteenth century. Design/methodology/approach – This is a historical case study using letters, newspapers, pamphlets, and other pieces of empirical evidence to highlight an important moment of political entrepreneurship. Findings – Many contemporary observers predicted that the USA would devolve into continuous revolution, which the authors argue Holcombe’s (2002) model predicts. However, political entrepreneurship ended the revolutionary period in the former British North America. Moreover, the political entrepreneurship ending the election crisis established the precedent of peaceful political succession. This precedent comparatively elevated the returns of productive, market entrepreneurship (Baumol, 1990). As a result, the USA experiences a prolonged period of entrepreneurially driven economic growth. Originality/value – To the authors knowledge, no one has developed the implication of a “revolution trap” from Holcombe’s (2002) model, nor has anyone applied Klein’s (2008) model to extend Holcombe’s model of political entrepreneurship. Although the disputed presidential election of 1800 has been extensively researched, no one has analyzed the election and its resolution from the perspective of political entrepreneurship.

Abstract:
Holcomb and Otto (1988) recently suggested that the widely used Global Assessment Scale may have “… questionable validity as an index of psychopathology.” The present paper points out procedural and conceptual problems in their study and presents extensive evidence supporting the concurrent and predictive validity of the scale.
