Abstract:
[From introduction]: In the cities of the global South elites are often desperate to repress the reality of the shack settlement. Maps are printed in which shack settlements appear as blank spaces, laws are passed that assume that everyone can afford to live formally and, in the name of order and development, the poor are beaten out of the cities. The great elite fantasy is the creation of 'world class cities' – shiny, securitised nowherevilles in which the poor understand that their place is to live in some peripheral ghetto and only come into the city as menial workers. But from City of God to Slum Dog Millionaire and now District 9 cinema has put the shack settlement in the mall and at the heart of how Rio, Bombay and Johannesburg feature in the global imagination.

Abstract:
Collecting is a fascinating area of human experience. Collections are used to express the collector’s knowledge and experience, as well as reveal their extended identity. The emergence of computing systems creates good opportunities for collectors to significantly increase the number of people they can share their collections with. Surprisingly, few tools exist that support the process of displaying and organizing collections and the stories they hold. This project is about discovering how collectors could further construct their collections in a virtualized version to preserve the rich experience behind their collections, share more knowledge and beauty with people, and present an image of their self in terms of their collections. A website is designed which allows collectors to track long-term collecting activities, create relevant metadata online, discover internal connections between items or sets, and share more information with a larger audience.

Abstract:

Pisegna, Jessica Maxham. "The efficacy of the Masako (tongue-hold) maneuver." Thesis, Boston University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12190.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University<br>Purpose: Clinicians commonly recommend the tongue-hold maneuver, also called the Masako, as an exercise to strengthen swallowing muscles. Although this exercise is widely used, limited empirical data support this maneuver as an effective exercise. The goal ofthe present study is to observe, over multiple sessions, the effects ofthe tongue- hold maneuver as a 6-week exercise in subjects with dysphagia. The results ofthis study will help to address whether the tongue-hold maneuver is beneficial and, if so, which muscle groups are strengthened by this exercise. Methods: Five subjects with dysphagia and one healthy adult performed a set oftongue- hold maneuvers 3 times a day, 5 days per week, for 6 weeks. The number o f repetitions per set was individually calculated based on 80% of the maximal repetitions until fatigue. At baseline and 6 weeks, 4 measures were observed: a subject-reported quality-of-life swallowing scale, lingual strength, the amount of residue in the valleculae, and the pressures generated by pharyngeal muscles during a normal swallow. Four healthy adults who did not perform the tongue-hold maneuver were used as controls for the lingual measures, completing the measures of lingual strength at baseline, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks. Results: No overt trends in the subject-reported swallowing scale were noted; after 6 weeks of exercise, about half ranked their swallowing as worse and half ranked their swallowing as better. The treatment group demonstrated a non-significant overall2.3% increase in anteromedian lingual strength and 8.4% increase in posteromedian lingual strength. These changes did not set the treatment group apart from the control group, who demonstrated an increase of3.8% and 6.3% in the anteromedian and posteromedian positions, respectively. Regarding pharyngeal residue, 2 subjects did not show any changes in residue scores. However, the other 3 subjects demonstrated reduced residue in the valleculae with a cracker bolus. Out ofthe 3 subjects who were measured with manometry, 2 demonstrated higher oropharyngeal pressures on normal swallows after 6 weeks of exercise, although great variability was present. These results are limited by the small sample size and heterogeneity of the treatment group, as well as high variability in instrumental measurements. Conclusion: This study investigated the tongue-hold maneuver as an exercise and provides preliminary support for its use, with caution. Specifically, clinicians should be sure to prescribe regimens that fatigue swallowing muscles and push them past normal use. When using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) as a tool, clinicians should also keep in mind that a learning effect is likely to occur over the first few trials. This pilot study suggests that clinicians should continue to prescribe the tongue-hold maneuver as an exercise with caution, as some patients may benefit from it while others may not. Further investigation is required.

Xue, Betty, and Per Åström. "Evolvable Production Systems: : What does the future hold?" Thesis, KTH, Industriell produktion, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-129303.

Abstract:
The world is everchanging and alongside the world economy and present topics in society such as climatechange, production is affected. Instead of massproduction we are now seeing more tendencies towards masscustomization. Customers are increasingly demanding custom-made products and in order to meet the challenges of the future we are going to see more and more flexible solutions of production. Research and development is continuously being done however there are no guaranties that they will work in the industry or even be profitable to adopt. Currently there is a group of researchers lead by Professor Mauro Onori at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm who are testing and developing a new paradigm of production called Evolvable Production System, EPS. In this report we will investigate what the future for EPS holds and whether or not an “ideal” product for this paradigm can be identified. We start by describing EPS, what it is and how it works. After that we explore what the necessary steps are, towards a breakthrough on the market and in the future generally. We exemplify advantages and drawbacks for EPS. We also look at the pharmaceutical industry, foremost at manufacturing of pharmaceutical pills, and conclude whether or not it would be profitable to convert. Lastly we analyse all of the above and try to identify what we find to be an “ideal” product for EPS. The “ideal” product we have identified is fairly small (for examplea control unit for a truck), made in many different variations and is not mass-produced. We are convinced EPS is well suited to live up to future demands on production systems, however it will take time and work to generate acceptance and understanding for this relatively new paradigm.<br>Världen är föränderlig, vilket påverkar förutsättningarna för produktion.

Abstract:
Catholic schools are an important element of the educational environment in the United States and are often the subject of effectiveness studies. However, Catholic school leadership, for the most part, is left out of the research loop (Schuster, 2000). While the learner affects schooling outcomes, the leadership of the school principal is the critical component in determining school quality (Sergiovanni, 1997). Today's Catholic schools differ greatly from Catholic schools prior to Vatican II. School leaders are faced with greater responsibilities than their predecessors. For example, within the Los Angeles Archdiocese, Catholic school principals are challenged to strategize different ways to market their schools, increase their enrollment, and raise funds for schools to remain viable. Based on a literature review on Catholic school leadership, including (a) the history of Catholic schools in the United States, (b) Catholic school governance, (c) Catholic school leadership, (d) strategic planning, and (e) the changing role of the school principal in the future of Catholic education, the following three research questions serve as the premise of the study: . What do Catholic elementary school principals identify as skills needed to lead Catholic schools in the 21st century? . What are Catholic elementary school principals' perceptions of how their role is changing? . How do Catholic elementary school principals identify their role and the current struggles of implementing a centralized strategic plan in a large Catholic diocese? This study employs a mixed-methods research design including a document review of the Los Angeles Archdiocese Strategic Plan and a survey containing multiple choice, Likert-scale type questions, and open-ended qualitative items. This research study is conducted to identify Catholic school elementary principals' role in implementing the current Strategic Plan for the Los Angeles Archdiocese and struggles principals encounter in implementing the Strategic Plan at their school site. Further, this research investigates how the Catholic school principalship is changing and the necessary skills that Catholic elementary school principals need to practice for leading these schools in the 21st century. Recommendations are discussed for Catholic elementary school principal training needed to lead future Catholic schools. Abstract:
My interests in the way that the citizens and media of the United States views war and the veterans returning from war fostered the development of my thesis film, Please Hold. The film is the story of Jacob, a combat veteran of the wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq who is being severely affected by his Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and is finding it difficult to get the help he needs in addressing it. This paper examines the history and reasons that PTSD has become a serious issue in the United States' veteran community, my own experiences as a war veteran, and contextualizes the need for films like my thesis project in understanding a veterans experience.

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 62-65).<br>This thesis concerns the body as it faces the computer. While it is informed by theories of embodiment, it argues against a retreat to the "human" in the face of new sensations that may result from the body's willing incorporation into the computer as an avatar. At the same time, the processes of self-virtualization enabled by computation are subject to question. Extending from the author's practice as an artist working in interactive media, digital video, sound, and writing, this work posits that both human and computer compete for agency in the active construction of meaning. Rather than locate this construction in either a perceptual or an algorithmic process, the encounter with the computer is described as a vibration. This allows both human and computer to be considered as affective bodies prior to signification. The vibration between these bodies is a form of movement opened by interrupting the process of signification that occurs when the computer renders code; the user responds to the computer's output; and rendering, response, and interaction are all read discursively. Both interruption and vibration are theorized here in relation to Merleau-Ponty, Virilio, Lyotard, Goodman, Hansen, Barthes, Beckett, Cézanne, Plato, and other theorists and practitioners.<br>by Ryan Kuo.<br>S.M. in Art, Culture and Technology

Abstract:
Apples and pears may be related fruits, but that does not mean they are the same! If I were to host a dinner party and intended to bake and serve an apple tart, but was delivered pears, I would end up with a pear frangipane and some very disappointed house guests. The context in which words are communicated is very important - apples and pears could relate to fruits or indeed stairs. Recognising intention as being important even in social contracts highlights the importance of intention in commercial transactions. The utility of contract law is to facilitate the agreement of parties and the rights and obligations assumed by them -this is the true essence of contract. Reverting to the analogy above, indemnity clauses although in some cases achieving similar ends as exclusion clauses, are not intended to result in exclusions of liability but are a more specific method of contractual risk management. One could infer that parties who specifically make use of indemnity clauses do not intend these to function as limitation of liability clauses, neither would they have intended such clauses be construed an exclusion of liability. Exclusion clauses could be construed as defences to accrued rights, however a central theme in this thesis is that an exclusion clause is clear in its function- it negates the accrual of a primary duty, implied by law. An indemnity on the other hand undeniably relates to secondary obligations to compensate or make good loss upon breach of primary obligations to perform. An indemnity clause, transfers secondary obligations to compensate to another who has assumed such obligation(s). In most cases the transferred obligation is financial; an indemnity is similar to a contractual insurance in this sense. An indemnity clause is not an exclusion clause. The difference is not only academic but also relevant to commerce. As the indemnity becomes a more common feature in high risk and high value contracting, certainty of its meaning is all too important. Where an indemnity is misconstrued as an exclusion of liability, the latter a duty defining clause, this could have an effect on the insurance arrangements between the parties ultimately making the venture uneconomical for one or both of the parties. The certainty of a contractual term enhances its effectiveness and consequently reduces the economic transaction costs of its inclusion. Thus, parties can focus on the first stage of Posner's transaction cost theory – 'negotiations and drafting' enhancing the utility of contract law.

Abstract:
Sign language has largely been dismissed in gesture interface research on grounds of being a natural language. This essay argues that this has been premature. We begin with an overview of relevant literature in the fields of both gesture interface design and sign language, followed by a discussion of other graphical and text-based user interfaces in the context of language - effectively a short essay on language and metaphors in interface design, going into more detail why I believe dismissing sign languages based on their linguistic nature is a mistake. This is further explored in an example user interface that was designed by taking an insight from sign language as a starting point to replace the desktop metaphor and combining it with the discussed text-based interfaces to extend the WIMP paradigm. This experimental design was used as a way to pose questions to users about potential uses of gesture interfaces.

Abstract:
The design project presented here explores the relation between body and a garment. It is concerned simultaneously with the fundamental notion of a garment and the act of dressing. The project can be contextualized as a constructive design research since the aim does not involve analysis of the material world nor rational problem solving. Rather, the aim is to create new imaginary realities, and visualize them. As a startup method to construct a theory, workshops were set up using life size vertical action collages, in order to integrate the act of dressing with the aim to develop a new construction method. Two actors, one of them myself, were used to provide a greater diversity of perspectives and interpretations. A method of dressing which involved interlocking the body - limbs and waist - with vertically hanging textiles, was developed through the search for the holes, that constitute the infrastructure of a garment. The results are both artefacts, that visualize the new garment construction as well as a new routine of dressing through the novel method of garment construction. Dressing a body in textiles through interlocking which results in an intimate connection between body and the garment as the body reacts to the garment and vice versa. The motivation for exploring the act of dressing is an urge to reflect upon the fast evolving society of today which tends to emphasize a static relationship between body and a garment.

Peters, Patricia Fulkes. "Ceridwen and Christ: An Arthurian Holy War." Thesis, North Texas State University, 1986. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc501114/.

Full text
Abstract:
Marion Zimmer Bradley's novel The Mists of Avalon is different from the usual episodic versions of the Arthurian legend in that it has the structural unity that the label "novel" implies. The narrative is set in fifth-century Britain, a time of religious conflict between Christianity and the native religions of Britain, especially the Mother Goddess cult. Bradley pulls elements from the Arthurian legend and fits them into this context of religious struggle for influence. She draws interesting family relationships which are closely tied to Avalon, the center of Goddess worship. The author also places the major events during Arthur's reign into the religious setting. The Grail's appearance at Camelot and the subsequent events led to the end of the religious struggle, for Christianity emerged victorious.

Selcuk, Fatma Ulku. "Mechanisms For The Bourgeois Hold Of State Power And The Case Of Turkey." Phd thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12608301/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to stress the decisiveness of armed force for the capitalist hold of state power and that only if a multi-level analytical framework is adopted a fuller account of the reality can be given with reference to the capitalist hold of state power. After laying the methodological and theoretical grounds for a multi-level analysis along with the privilege of armed force as the factor enabling the state power, it concretizes the multi-level analytical framework in the context of Turkey. It drives the attention to the co-existence of micro and macro level factors influential over state practices. The mafia forces are also proposed to be integrated to the analysis of the capitalist state on account of the considerable economic and armed means they hold. The Weberian approach describing the state in terms of its monopoly of legitimate use of force is proposed to be replaced by an alternative one not holding the consent of the inhabitants as an unconditional necessity for the presence of the state. The class struggle process is held to take place at a site embracing the interplay of associative and communal relationships in a micro-macro range. The routes of tendential multiplicity and totality are attempted to be explored at least partially. Also the importance of strategy and tactics are stressed and some threats waiting the forces longing for a world without exploitation and domination are underlined.

There are many different ways of aging successfully, but a growing group of scientists at Northwestern university and elsewhere are zeroing in on why some people keep the recall you'd expect of a middle-ager well into their 9th and 10th decades. The scientists do everything they can to get to know these the owners of these brains -- their abilities, their genes, and the stories of their lives -- then, when they die, dissect the brains themselves. Will the craniums of these successful "SuperAgers" give science some leverage in the battle against dementia, or even against aging itself?<br>by Bennett Allan McIntosh.<br>S.M. in Science Writing

Kerfoot, Christine Marie. "The stories of public school teachers who hold doctorates: A narrative study." Scholarly Commons, 2008. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2376.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative, narrative study was to examine the stories of public elementary school teachers who hold doctorates and to discover what these stories tell about their understanding of education within the context of public schools. Specifically, investigation centered on reasons teachers in this group pursued doctorates. This study also examined the ways in which they describe their role as educators within the public school system; the ways in which they view their relationships with public school colleagues; and the ways in which the doctoral experience has influenced their beliefs about teaching, public schooling, and education. Participants included seven California elementary public school teachers who took part in two tape recorded interviews and contributed one story from their professional experience and/or a personal reflection on the interview process. Analysis of the data involved restorying the participants' stories, identifying segments of information, labeling the segments with codes that describe their meaning, grouping the codes into themes, and identifying examples from the data that supported the themes. Six themes emerged from the collected data: learning, connection and collaboration, conflict, leadership, satisfaction, and respect . The participants described their various learning experiences, how they connect and collaborate with others, the ways in which they experience conflict, the contexts in which they exhibit leadership skills, the circumstances that have brought about personal satisfaction, and the ways in which they have observed and experienced respect. Results revealed that the teachers pursued a doctorate in order to broaden their knowledge base and educational experience and that the doctoral experience has given them a broader perspective of education. They have assumed a leadership role within the public school system, and although they acknowledged that they have a different viewpoint of education and schooling than their colleagues, they see those with whom they work as valuable members of the school community. Implications from the results focused on the importance of change within the learning process and the responsibility of leadership that comes with advanced knowledge and experience.

Kolehmainen, Mari Johanna. "The black hole spin controversy." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5894/.

Full text
Abstract:
Astrophysical black holes are the simplest possible objects. They are completely described by only two parameters in general relativity, their mass and the specific angular momentum, spin. The spin is a fundamental characteristic of a black hole, but unlike mass it leaves a mark on space-time only very close to the event horizon, and is therefore more difficult to measure. The observational relevance of the spin comes from the fact that it sets the size scale of the last stable orbit around the accreting black hole, dragging the accretion disc farther in the faster it spins. Black hole spin is a very controversial topic in both stellar and supermassive black holes. There are two methods to determine spin in binary systems, using either the direct disc continuum or the reflected emission. These can give significantly different values, and understanding the source of this discrepancy is important especially for interpreting AGN spin, where only the reflection method can be used. We have strived to understand and carefully model the time-averaged energy spectra from several Galactic black hole binaries, in order to ultimately measure the black hole spin. Achieving this has required in-depth understanding of the instruments as well as the data analysis methods. The spin leaves only minor traces in the data, and these can be affected by calibration uncertainties, uncertainties in the models and systematic uncertainties. This knowledge is absolutely essential for a detailed analysis of all relativistically smeared atomic features seen in the time-averaged energy spectra of compact objects.

Lee, Justin Joon. "Origen and the Holy Spirit." Thesis, Durham University, 2018. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12804/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an examination of the pneumatology of Origen of Alexandria. By providing insight into his understanding of the Holy Spirit, it also seeks to reframe the way in which Origen’s Trinitarian theology is understood. In this study, I argue that Origen conceives of the Holy Spirit as a divine person, but inferior in nature. Origen’s pneumatology must be considered in light of his understanding of the Son and Father, as well as the influence of Middle Platonism on his theological and cosmological framework. Origen’s concept of Trinity is a hierarchy of divine persons in which the greater ministers to the existence of the lower. Though Origen recognizes the personhood of the Holy Spirit, he believes that the Spirit is less than the other divine persons, both in person and in work. The Spirit’s origin and attributes, for which Origen has no real scriptural or traditional precedent, he struggles to articulate and often leaves unresolved. I suggest that Origen’s pneumatology can be best understood by examining where he is most clear and consistent: the work of the Holy Spirit. Origen consistently portrays the Spirit as participating in the divine work of salvation; his Trintarianism is strongly economic, emphasizing shared work and will. The Spirit’s specific role in the economy is to indwell and assist the saints, in line with his lesser status. There are two ways in which the Holy Spirit’s activity can be framed: (1) in the Trinitarian and downward action of God, in which the Spirit is the direct distributor of the divine gifts and graces and (2) the Spirit’s upward work of revelation and sanctification, by which he leads the saints to the Son and Father. The Spirit thus serves as the practical and personal initiator of believers into the greater processes of salvation and deification.
