Abstract:
The objective of this article is to perform a diagnostic study with a focus on preinvestment phase processes in the province of Holguín, Cuba, comparing it with other pre investment sub processes in Latin America. For this, methods and techniques such as Kendall's coefficient of concordance, the SWOT analysis and the House of Quality were used. The main results were the current status of the quality o f the pre investment subprocess in the Holguin context, as well as the competitive profile with respect to other preinvestment subprocesses in the region. It is concluded that the pre investment sub process in Holguín has as its main deficiency the low quality of the pre investment studies, an aspect that in turn constitutes the most representative characteristic in the design of this sub process.

Abstract:
The gravel pits are exploitations to extract granular materials, sand and gravel in the alluvial river areas. Excavated voids are not very deep, unlike quarries and generally result in flooded areas. The company building materials in Holguin province has concessioned four deposit and within a gravel pit. The areas damaged by the exploitation of construction materials in the territory occupy about 75 ha, which causes a strong impact on the environment. For this reason it is proposed to develop a procedure to recover the deposit mined area in the gravel - sand Rio Sagua de Holguín as to achieve responsible mining. With the application of scientific methods analyzed the factors influencing the choice of recovery uses the mined area in the study area and developed a procedure consisting of five main stages. With the development of the procedure was shown that it can improve the social and environmental quality in the area affected by the mining activity.

Abstract:
A new genus and species of Cepolidae are described from the Island of Cuba: Plagiosimilis gibarensis gen. et sp. nov. It is classified in Cepolidae based on the following diagnostic characteristics of the family: dart apparatus consisting of a dart sac with a pedunculated gland on its apical side, both covered by a sheath; at the base of the dart apparatus there are two accessory glands; absence of a diverticulum. The specimens from the new genus come from the northern part of the Holguin province in the vicinity of the town of Gibara and live in special habitat dominated by Tillandsia plants. Shell with the rounded last whorl last very globular round, circular umbilicus and strongly reflected lip distinguish conchologically the new genus. The reproductive system and the shell differ from the other genera, although it have a certain similarity with the genera Plagioptycha and Hemitrochus.

Abstract:
In Cuba, the emergence of bean golden mosaic was associated with high populations of Bemisia tabaci in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plantings in the 1970s (1). During the last two decades, the disease has caused significant economic losses, forcing some growers to abandon bean production. In Holguín, one of the main bean producing provinces of the country, about 2,000 ha of beans were abandoned in 1991 due to the high incidence of this whitefly-transmitted virus. At that time, yield losses associated with this disease reached 90 to 100% in farmer's fields. In spite of various control measures, the disease affected 33, 28, and 6.5% of the total area planted in Cuba to common bean in 1990, 1992, and 1996, respectively. For this investigation, common bean leaves showing systemic yellowing symptoms were collected in fields located in the provinces of Havana, Matanzas, and Holguín during 1998-1999. Sap and total DNA leaf extracts were used to inoculate healthy bean plants by manual and biolistic procedures, respectively. Characteristic yellowing symptoms were more efficiently reproduced using a particle gun device than by manual inoculation (18/20 plants and 5/20 plants, respectively, for a Holguín virus isolate). DNA extracts were further analyzed by polymerase chain reaction using two degenerate primer sets: PAL1v1978-PAR1c715 and PAL1c1960-PAR1v722 (2). Fragments of approximately 1.4 and 1.2 kb were amplified and cloned. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the cloned 1.4-kb fragments was performed with BglII, HincII, SalI, EcoRI, PstI, and XbaI, indicating that selected isolates from the three Cuban provinces shared identical restriction patterns. The nucleotide sequence obtained from two clones of a virus isolate from Holguín, was compared to sequences available for other begomoviruses using BLAST. The Cuban isolate shared up to 94% nt sequence identity with various strains of Bean golden yellow mosaic virus (BGYMV) in the first 250 nt of the rep gene. For the common region (CR), scores were 93% for BGYMV-GA (Guatemala), 92% for BGYMV-MX (southern Mexico) and BGYMV-PR (Puerto Rico), and 91% for BGYMV-DR (Dominican Republic). The iterative sequence ATGGAG was identified in the CR of the Cuban BGYMV isolate, as reported for other BGYMV isolates. Finally, the Cuban begomovirus, hereafter referred to as BGYMV-CU, shared nt and aa sequence identities of 94 and 100%, respectively, with the coat protein gene of BGYMV-MX. We conclude that the begomovirus isolated from mosaic-affected common bean plants in the province of Holguín is a member of the Mesoamerican BGYMV group (3). References: (1) N. Blanco and C. Bencomo. Abstract:
Three new Selaginella species from Cuba, S. myriostachya, S. nanophylla and S. phiara, are described, illustrated with Scanning Electron Micrographs, and compared to similar species. Selaginella myriostachya and S. phiara are from Pinar del Río province, the latter one is also found in Isla de la Juventud special municipality, both in the western part of Cuba. In contrast, S. nanophylla is from Guantánamo, Holguín, and Santiago de Cuba provinces in the eastern part of the island. Information about their habitat, distribution, and conservation status is provided. Selaginella myriostachya lives in cave openings on limestone rocks in Mogotes formations; S. nanophylla is one of the smallest plants reported for the genus and seems adapted to serpentine soils. Selaginella phiara has idioblasts with several bright, papillae on the upper surface of median leaves and lower surface of lateral leaves, and short hairs on the upper surface of the apices of median leaves.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective and settingA nationwide study was performed in Cuba to assess vitamin A status and the intake of vitamin-A-providing foods in children aged 6–11 years.Design and subjectsThe sample comprised 1191 schoolchildren from first to sixth grade, both sexes, from municipalities randomly selected from the five eastern provinces of Cuba in 2002 (first semester) and from the four western and four central provinces in 2003 (first semester). A food-frequency questionnaire was completed by 2038 mother-and-child pairs.ResultsMean (±standard deviation) plasma retinol concentrations were 1.77 ± 0.48 μmol l−1in the western, 2.01 ± 0.56 μmol l−1in the central and 1.40 ± 0.41 μmol l−1in the eastern region. No child had plasma retinol concentration below 0.35 μmol l−1, indicative of a high risk of clinical deficiency. Subclinical deficiency, plasma retinol concentration of 0.35–0.7 μmol l−1, was seen in <2% of subjects in all three regions and was <5% even in the two provinces with the worst vitamin A status (Guantánamo, 4.6%; Las Tunas, 3.0%). Adequate status (>1.05 μmol l−1) was present in >90% of subjects in all western and central provinces, and in one of the eastern provinces (Holguín), whereas in the four remaining eastern provinces, adequate status was present in >75%. Only nine fruits and vegetables were consumed frequently (>3 times per week) by >50% of children. Thirty-seven per cent regularly consumed a supplement containing vitamin A.ConclusionsMost Cuban children aged 6–11 years had adequate vitamin A status. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin and provitamin A, especially vegetables, was frequent but limited to a small variety of foods.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the results of a study in which the objective was to assess the process of school principals’ training in Cuba. Data collection was done through the revision of existing documents and administering of questionnaires to subjects involved in the training process. Universities and provincial and municipal departments of education in eight provinces as well as schools in the province of Holguín were included in this study. The triangulation of the information obtained allowed analysts to conclude that the formation of a school principal is recognized as a specialized process, of a strategic nature, that must be carried out in stages. The conception of its implementation helps to prepare candidates and existing school principals in office for their professional management activity. However, conception of training does not ensure a coherent articulation between its stages and does not allow it to fully fulfill its fundamental role in the specialization and professionalization of the school principals. The enhancement of preparation for school management during initial teacher training, the accreditation of pre-service training of candidates, and the promotion of postgraduate academic training programs should be considered as ways for training and improvement of the didactic–methodological conception of the training process.

Abstract:
A new species of mud shrimp of the genus Naushonia Kingsley, 1897 is described from two anchialine caves on the island of Great Abaco in the Bahamas. Naushonia tinkeri n. sp. is the fifteenth species in the genus and the second to be described from the Bahamas. The new species is morphologically similar to N. augudrea (Juarrero & García, 1997) from Holguín Province, eastern Cuba, with which it shares a carapace with cervical and cardiac grooves; however, it can be distinguished by having a pigmented cornea, the first pereiopod with a proportionately longer propodus and dactylus without a toothed external margin, and the telson longer relative to the uropod length. The new species inhabits anchialine caves and is the largest one reported until now.
