Abstract:
The types of wastewater of a holiday house are considered. The necessity of disinfection of the treated domestic sewage at house before their soil recovery is substantiated. The methods of disinfection of treated holiday house drainage are described: chlorination, ozonizing, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and their essence is revealed. Their advantages and disadvantages are listed. A comparative ecological characterization of the indicated methods of disinfection of sewage is given. Factors influencing the efficiency of disinfection of wastewater by these methods and on the economic indicators of processes are indicated. As a result of the environmental and economic evaluation of disinfection methods, a conclusion has been made in favor of the prospect of applying the UV irradiation method for disinfection of the treated wastewater from a holiday house.

Abstract:
PurposeThe decision to buy a holiday home depends on a number of social, cultural, economic and demographic factors. These factors are related to home and environmental characteristics as well as demographic characteristics of buyers. The aim of this paper is to investigate the factors that shape the decision to purchase a holiday home in Greece.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents the results of a survey, involving a representative sample of potential buyers of holiday homes in Greece.FindingsAccording to the research results, buying a holiday home in Greece is mainly an investment decision for the future and is determined by the value and characteristics of the house, the hidden costs and the factors that shape the external economic environment. (1) Further, the analysis has shown that there is a limited use of electronic channels in the real estate market in Greece with further potential of development.Originality/valueThe investigation focuses on the characteristics of the house, the variables of the external environment, (2) considering any obstacles or catalysts, such as the use of electronic channels. Even though similar studies have been conducted worldwide on the topic, very few have been carried out in Greece which lately has gone through major market changes.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the peculiarities of functioning of the household service on the material of the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) which is the largest international hotel chain by number of rooms; in particular they examine the Holiday Inn Express Rolling Meadows, USA, and the hotel “ Vostok” located in Tyumen, Russian Federation. They examine the standard of housekeeping, cleaning technology and the order of service. The author characterizes timing parameters for the service and the number of personnel involved in the service. They say about the service stages of rooms. The completeness of the house cleaner carts characterize on the material of Holiday Inn Express Rolling Meadows. It can have: the cleaner, the laundry bag, trash bag, broom, and dustpan, chemicals, funds for a complete bathroom, linen, towels, bathrobes, kitchenette, dry cloth for cleaning bathrooms, sponge, brush, plunger, bucket, notepads and pens. They examine its movement when cleaning room stock. The article proposes speech clichés and communicative strategies used by the house cleaner while cleaning the rooms (in particular, the phrase on the plates’ clean rooms). The author makes the conclusion that clean technologies in the hotel Vostok and the Holiday Inn, despite the absence of unified standards, have many things in common. Even if there are differences in the process of cleaning (for example, a cart in the hotel Vostok is less than in the Holiday Inn Express Rolling Meadows), they are based on rational conditions (there are special rooms for maids in the hotel to fill the cart). Generally, the author notices the importance of the house cleaner in the functioning of a household service, because the cleanliness of the room, and thus profits of the hotel depends on this profession.

Abstract:
The article, written on the basis of material in the Arkhangelsk dialects, is devoted to the “new” holidays that appeared (the October, the Victory Day, the May Day) or acquired significance (the New Year) in the Russian North in the Soviet period. Their dialect names are described, with special attention paid to the manner in which dialects adapted official names (for example, the Day of the Great October Socialist Revolution became October). In addition, the ceremonial content of the holidays of the Soviet era (the preparation and use of special festive foods and drinks, the preparation of the house for the holiday, including its cleaning and decoration, the tradition of gost’ba, or visiting relatives in the holidays) are analysed. Further, the study considers the beginnings of omens and regulations, mainly related to the agrarian labour cycle (start and end of field work) and changes in nature (ice drift and river-freezing, or rekostav). These began to take shape around the most important “new” holidays — Oktyábr’skaya (October) and Pervomai (May Day). Also discussed is the interaction of the Soviet holidays with holidays on the church calendar that were near in time (May Day — Passover, New Year — Christmas) and agrarian-labour holidays marking the completion of seasonal field work (Oktyábr’skaya — sowing (obsevnaia).

Abstract:
Houses are fascinating because they seem to occupy a pivotal position in the spectrum of human construction. They are, perhaps, located right on the watershed between what is generally understood as ‘architecture’ and what is considered as just ‘building’. They allow us to probe the very definition of what architecture is perceived to be. Using the typology of the dwelling - and three examples from three architectural practices - we examine differing responses to context, climate and the vernacular, documenting and evaluating commonalities and differentials in design approaches. The examples are a holiday home in Dungeness by NORD, an artists’ residence and studio on Loch Fyne by GMA and a house on the Isle of Lewis by studioKAP.

Abstract:
The varied cultural landscape of Polish cities and towns abounds in often unnoticed examples of former coexistence of cultures and religions. The Jewish sukkah, inside which the followers of Judaism would spend 7 days during the autumn holiday of Sukoth, is such a mark that still exists today near many residential buildings. In Poland, due to the climate and culture, the sukkah took the form of wooden or brick structures, walled-off balconies, loggias or verandas, which all featured an opening roof. The hatch was often operated with complex mechanical devices - products of folk engineering and ingenuity. Quite often the shed’s outside was richly decorated. The current state of surviving sukkah, which make a vital element of the cultural landscape of Polish towns, is usually very bad. The knowledge about the sukkah, as an element of Polish cultural heritage, should be promoted and currently existing interest should be exploited. It is vital to initiate the creation of academic and historical studies, strengthen legal protection and teach local authorities, owners and property managers.

Since the proclamation of the State of Queensland in 1859 the Queensland domestic garden has undergone various and numerous changes. There have been changes in size, design and preferred plant species. There have been changes in the householder's perception, use and management of the garden. Importantly there has also been change in what constitutes the Queenslander house.

Abstract:
In the past and to some extent the present, various Euro North American and other cultural groups marked the period from Christmas Eve to Twelfth Night with rowdy, disguised, playful/ludic or carnivalesque behaviour that mainstream Euro North Americans associate more with Halloween than with this holiday season. Many such customs, termed the “informal house visit” involve a group (usually young men) who perambulate from one location to another within a community. They include performative aspects–often dancing and singing–as well as the expectation of a reward--usually food and/or drink--and some sociability with the visited household members. A seasonal custom performed by young men, almost always on New Year’s Eve, in rural Manitoba Mennonite villages where the church tolerated it, Brommtopp is named after the musical instrument used during the performance. Traditionally a group of some dozen teenaged boys and young married men would drive and/or walk from house to house within their own village and sometimes beyond. At each residence, the group would sing the traditional song which generally asked for money in return for good wishes. We examine the sociohistorical surround of the practice and its past and current racialised and postcolonial implications.

Abstract:
The middle part of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, “Time Passes”, presents a seemingly post-human setting in which destruction reigns. Read today, this scenario immediately evokes imaginations of the Anthropocene while resisting teleological notions of an end-time. Rather, “Time Passes” is pervaded by forces of unworking: agency slips into passivity, whatever is done becomes undone. A holiday house abandoned by human beings decays to “rack and ruin” until a group of cleaners attempts to reverse nature’s work. Both the natural forces taking over and the cleaners engage in processes that are simultaneously destructive and productive. An analogous dynamic can be observed in Woolf’s writing and editing practices: her laborious revisions mainly consist in deleting. As Woolf continually erases large parts of her writing, composition and decomposition are interwoven.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 (the Act [U.S. House of Representatives 2004]) created a tax holiday encouraging firms to repatriate foreign earnings and invest that capital in the United States. However, the Act did not require a direct tracing of the spending of repatriated funds; accordingly, repatriating firms could ignore the investment prescriptions of the Act, since tax regulators were provided no legally viable basis to pursue violations of the spending requirements. We use this event to provide evidence on the effect of political scrutiny on firms' tax law compliance in a setting where regulatory enforcement plays essentially no role. Our findings suggest that repatriating firms facing greater levels of policymaker scrutiny, relative to other repatriating firms, exhibited greater compliance with the Act by increasing relative expenditures on permitted uses (R&D investment) and restraining expenditures on nonpermitted uses. We also find that the spending patterns are different only for the group of high-scrutiny firms (i.e., there is a threshold effect). Our estimates imply that the repatriation tax holiday induced, among such high-scrutiny firms alone, $0.41 of additional R&D spending per revenue dollar forgone by the Treasury under the Act. The evidence is generally consistent with the political cost hypothesis. Data Availability: The data used for this study are from the public sources identified in the text, with the exception of the marginal tax rate data provided by John Graham from Duke University.

Abstract:
Tourism and recreation as a driving force for forecasting biodiversity changes: Lake Engure watershed area as an example The aim of the research was to evaluate tourism as a driving force and its pressures in the Lake Engure drainage basin area to forecast the possible long-term changes in biodiversity, in accordance with the DPSIR (Driving forces, Pressures, States, Impacts and Responses) framework, used by European Environment Agency (EEA). A map of the territory, divided into three tourism zones, was charted using secondary data sources, field research data and surveys of holiday-makers. Tourism enterprises and service providers as driving forces and the pressures created were evaluated, and statistical data on capacity of tourist accommodation, a number of people employed in the tourism industry and a number of tourists in the territory were summarised. Owners of summer houses and recreationists were surveyed in regard of their behaviour, the local services offered, the involvement of local municipality in the process and their future plans, and these factors were studied to evaluate the possible impact of second house tourism. The results indicate that tourism and recreation as a driving force is most active in the coastal zone, however, there is not a big tourist flow. In the future the territory will be mainly used for transit tourism, second-home tourism and recreation.

Abstract:
AbstractGold Coast beaches oscillate in the cultural imagination between everyday reality and a tourist's paradise of ‘sun, surf and sex’ (Winchester and Everett 2000: 59). While these narratives of selfhood and becoming, egalitarianism and sexual liberation punctuate the media, Gold Coast literary fictions instead reveal the beach as a site of danger, wholly personifying the unknown. Within Amy Barker's Omega Park, Melissa Lucashenko's Steam Pigs, Georgia Savage's The House Tibet and Matthew Condon's Usher and A Night at the Pink Poodle, the beach is a ‘masculine’ space for testing the limit of the coastline and one's own capacity for survival. This article undertakes a close textual analysis of these novels and surveys other Gold Coast fictions alongside spatial analysis of the Gold Coast coastline. These fictions suggest that the Gold Coast is not simply a holiday world or ‘Crime Capital’ in the cultural imagination, but a mythic space with violent memories, opening out onto an infinite horizon of conflict and estrangement.

Abstract:
The village Vasile Goldis is located in the eastern part of Zarand’s Depression. It is a village that belongs to the commune Beliu. Over time, this beautiful place suffered lots of changes regarding its name. At the beginning its name was Mocirla, then Lunca Teuz, ultimately ending up with the name of the head (leader) who led the Great Union from 1918. Vasile Goldis was born in the village that has his name. 1552 is the year where we have the first documentary attestation; the settlement takes the name from “Mochola” stream. Vasile Goldis was born on the 12th November 1872 in Mocirla, in his grandfather’s house, named Teodor. His parents were Isaia and Floarea. Even nowadays, the people of this village keep the old words and sayings, most often used in spells and different sayings specific for wedding and funeral ceremonies. In my research I found in the village many holiday customs, that are about to be forgotten because they aren’t practiced any more. In our country we have a lot of customs that are unique for every important event in a person’s life; they go from birth to death. The customs specific for birth are kept even today with small changes. The childhood and the entire life are defined to the spell, so each person should be protected from evil things. The wedding is a complex ceremonial which brings together the entire village. Relatives, neighbours, friends bring their gift, which consist of food products, to the groom and bride. The wedding starts in the morning or at the latest in the afternoon. The groom goes with some of the wedding guests and with the musicians first to the godparents’ house, then to the bride’s home. Together with the bride, they go to the groom’s house, where the party will be held. The funeral, just like the wedding, was an event where the entire village took part. The death of a person from the community was announced by the bell of the village’s church. The bell beat in a certain way. The funeral was organized with the help of relatives and friends; in this way everything was ready for the day of the funeral. The holidays over the year were usually celebrated individually in the family; they were rarely celebrated with all the people in the village. Collective customs gathered the entire village and this was shown trough dances and raft meetings. Through this research I tried to rediscover some customs and customs that are soon to be forgotten, but they define us as a nation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is the analysis of the Soviet political rituals and daily practices that developed under their influence. The methodology of the research is based on the general and special historical methods of cognition of the past involving the methods of socio-cultural and political anthropology. The scientific novelty of the paper consists in the fact that the role of various Soviet political rituals in establishing of the norms and practices of the Soviet daily life has been analyzed for the first time and the influence of the Soviet ritual culture in the Soviet regime strengthening has been found. Mass calendar holidays-rituals (October Revolution Day, Workers’ Solidarity Day) not only marked a new era in the history, but also leveled the sacredness of the Christian cycle (Christmas – Easter). Evolution of the formal organization of the Soviet ritual (from staging-imitation through carnivalization to monumental narrativization) and improvement of its semantic content (nomination – sacralization – monumentalization – memorialization) have been traced. From the beginning, festive commemoration was meant to form the Soviet identity, design the collective past and set the framework of collective memory. Official rituals gradually penetrated into the daily life (family and friendly holiday feasts, house cleaning, novelties purchase and greeting cards). Conclusions. From the beginning, the Soviet rituals were a reliable ideological weapon, an instrument of the communist indoctrination of the country’s population. Political rituals played a major role in legitimization of the Bolsheviks power, became an effective means of communication with society, enabled its consolidation within the framework of the Soviet political canon, minimized the social conflicts, leveled open dissatisfaction with the governmental authorities and assisted in the formation of ideological unanimity. Along with repressive methods, the Soviet political rituals served to create new political reality, enabled its acceptance by the masses of people, formed consciousness, encouraged relevant political actions and practices of the daily life.

Abstract:
Udmurt folklore contains rich material on the symbolism of drinks and food. The Udmurt language and ritual traditions have preserved archaic ideas of the magic connection between festival culture and ritual drinks/food (“yuondyr” means both time for a drink and time for a feast). It is significant that the names of holidays that mark important calendar periods in winter (“Vozho-dyr” - winter Yule) and summer solstice (“Invozho” - summer Yule) contain names of an alcohol drink (“sur” - beer): “Tolsur” means winter beer or winter festival; “Kuarsur” means leaf beer or summer festival. The component “beer,” also meaning “festival,” which under the influence of the Old Believers was substituted for another alcoholic drink (“braga”), is also preserved in the name of autumn youth gatherings in the North of Udmurtia (“nyl-braga” - maiden braga or maiden holiday). Here also the term “shyd sion” (the eating of soup) has been recorded as meaning both ritual feast and a component of the entire ritual complex. The symbolism of drinks and food and the idea of the holiday as a sacred phenomenon is most clearly shown in the guest songs that are performed during house-to-house visits by relatives. These are sung to a popular ritual melody and are a way to express the feelings of the ritual’s participants: piety to the gods and gratitude and love for relatives. In ritual guest songs, standard images from incantation-prayers (“kuris’kon”) echo with the symbolism of drinks and food. The most ancient stratum of images derive from a simple set of terms denoting drink and food (“sion-yuon” and “shyd-nyan” - food-drink and soup-bread) and not only correlates with satisfying of physiological human needs (thirst and hunger), but also symbolizes spiritual well-being. Over time these terms have been enriched with various shades of meaning having to do with “treating” with food and drink and suggest “joy,” “enjoyment,” “festival,” “feast,” and “fellowship” - with the gods, with the near and dear, or with consanguineous relatives (cf. the Russian “bread-salt”).

Abstract:
Tourists’ intentions show many changing dynamics, both in terms of destination and accommodation selection. These changes in dynamics are seasonal and significantly affected by trends. Therefore, after an infectious disease outbreak, as is the case with COVID-19 caused by a new coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, these dynamics change on an entirely different level and are so far unknown. Contextual research was conducted to define and analyze the impacts of SARS-CoV-2 on Azores residents’ tourism accommodations plans in 2020 by examining their intentions. The most frequent choice was to spend 2020 vacations at the vacation residences of family or friends (24.3%), followed by approximately 20% who chose three- to four-star hotels. A considerable increase in rural tourism accommodation selection intentions was noticed, obtaining the third position with 13.7%, followed by local accommodation (guest house) with 12.1% of the selection intentions. The study concludes that there are massive consequences of the SARS-CoV-2 crisis at the level of holiday choices and social isolation concerns for this ultra-peripheral territory.

Abstract:
Abstract Some of the precepts pertaining to the holiday of Sukkot involve water and the prayer for rain; of these, the most prominent is nissukh ha-mayim, the water libation. The water libation has an eschatological and cosmological character. According to R. Eliezer b. Jacob in the Mishnah, the water was brought to the altar through the Water Gate, because “the water that will flow from under the threshold of the House in the future [i.e., in the messianic age] trickles through it.” This alludes to Ezekiel’s vision of a thin stream of water that emerges from the Temple and grows until it becomes a flowing river whose waters have special properties of blessing and healing. The scholarly literature has addressed the eschatological interpretation of the water libation ritual in various contexts. Here I expand on this and show how the elements of the vision correspond closely to the elements of the ritual. The focus will be on the path by which the water was brought into the Temple and then to the altar, first in the ritual and then in the vision.

Abstract:
A great number of tourists has embraced online travel booking. This paper examines the influence of four factors, namely credibility, trustworthiness, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use on booking intention and explores whether the attitude mediates the relationship between trustworthiness and booking intention. A total of 191 completed and usable questionnaires from holidaymakers in Malaysia were collected. The results showed that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use have a significant positive relationship with the booking intention. The result also highlighted that attitude partially mediates the relationship between trustworthiness and booking intention. The paper concludes with a discussion on managerial implications and suggestions to address this issue. Abstract:
In the article the dramatic composition of A. Ostrovsky’s comedy Holiday Dream Before Dinner is investigated with the method used in the analysis of musical texts. The general structure of the work is defined as an analog of the monothematic sonata form. The basis of monothema- tism is the theme of dream. The dream is the thematic core of the play. It absorbs all the motives and images that are consistently revealed in the play. So, the first theme is the image of Balzaminov as a dreamer, and the second theme is the embodiment of Balzaminov’s dream in the image of the Nichkin’s rich house. The interaction of these themes goes along the line of their convergence up to full identification. In addition to the analysis of general structure of the text, the article traces the entire motivic dramaturgy, which emphasizes the features of a musical composition. Thematic arches between sections of the text, the intonation structure of the characters’ speech, acoustic effects giving the text a resemblance to an orches- tral composition are revealed. The analysis of the play leads the author to the conclusion about the universality of musical forms.

Abstract:
Deciduous holly branches were visually rated over a period of 5 weeks to evaluate differences in display life between various cultivars of winterberry (Ilex verticillata) and japanese winterberry (I. serrata) x winterberry. Holly branches were naturally defoliated and the postharvest performance of the cut branches was therefore based on the quality and longevity of the fruit. Chemical treatments including floral preservative, floral preservative plus silver, and anti-transpirant were also evaluated. `Bonfire' and `Sunset' had the highest ratings for marketability based on the longevity and quality of their fruit. `Bonfire' and `Winter Red' had the highest fruit density per stem. Treatment with floral preservatives significantly increased the display life of holly branches. Preservative plus silver delayed deterioration later in the study, presumably by delaying the senescence of the fruit. Anti-transpirant treatment did not decrease solution uptake by the holly stems. Cold storage of dry branches at 0.00 ± 1.11 °C (32.0 ± 2.0 °F) did not significantly reduce branch display life if held for 23 days or less. Cut branches of all cultivars had a longer display life when stuck in sand and left outdoors in a lath house than when rated in vase solutions indoors. This study indicates that deciduous holly branches provide an attractive alternative cut branch for both interior and outdoor holiday displays.

The data card is considered as the appropri-<br />ate data. The nonenglish students’ aspirations of semantic fi eld are<br />the only data. The next step is to analyze the data. The researcher<br />used the Riemer’s theory (the semantics of categorization) to ana-<br />lyze the data. The students’aspiration would be classifi ed according<br />to Riemer’s theory. The last step is to present the analysis. The re-<br />searcher classifi ed the data into two categories: a) classical categori-<br />zation, and b) prototype categorization. The dominant classical cat-<br />egorization could be fi nd in the lexical items like house, bathroom,<br />tree, concert, holiday, library, hospital, football competition,<br />and aircraft. Abstract:
The celebration of Christmas over the centuries has involved many folk and even regional traditions that are passed away, rejected and gradually forgotten by the modern man. Now more and more the main meaning of the feast the intimate reverence for the newborn God, sacrificing himself for all of us and for his mother, the Virgin Mary has been shifted from buying and receiving interesting, impressive, spectacular Christmas gifts, from arranging a lavish dining table, from a rich Christmas revel. On the other hand sending the old and welcoming the new year is traditionally associated with the anticipation of something new and good, positive change, happiness, prosperity, fulfillment of dreams. Increasingly, these personal, intimate expectations are shifting from care, where will we welcome the New Year, what will we wear to make a stronger impression, what will we eat in the festive evening. Christmas is a religious holiday specific to the Christian faith, while New Year is celebrated in the cultures where there is a chronology. Christmas has a certain date, and the New Year for Different Cultures begins in a different season. More by this glimpse is clear, first, that the two holidays differ essentially, and second, that the commercialization of our lifestyle and thinking largely unified and increasingly unifies those, essentially many different holidays. In order to limit the manifestations of negative trends that shift the main emphasis of the holidays, making them occasions to demonstrate our own success in society, it is important to to further influence the on educating adolescents. When looking for an impact to overcome already rooted in the minds of youth attitudes, it is necessary to select tools that are modenn, that evoke confidence, that are likable, attractive to young people. Spending more and more time in front of the computer screen communicating through their phones, teenagers are increasingly accustomed to trusting the electronic way of communicating as well as searching and finding the necessary information electronically. In sync with these attitudes is the new educational tool electronic textbook. True to the notion that luxuriance, spectacularity, self assertion and egotism are unrelated and should not disturb one of the two brightest Christian feasts Christmas, I set as the aim of this study highlighting by placed in the electronic textbook tasks of the different nature of the two large following in rapid succession holidays, i.e. of the gracious intimacy, modesty and kindness of Christmas, and the glamorous splendor and catcing optimism of the New Year. In this study I review the electronic music textbook for the fourth grade of the general education school in Bulgaria of Publishing House "Prosveta". The two holidays are reflected with: 2 presentations organized as team tasks. Since teamwork contributes to creating relations of mutual assistance, to neglecting of individualistic attitudes for the sake of the success of the common cause, this kind of organization is in line with the objectives of the study. 2 photo galleries designed to support the impressionsaccumulated by the presentations with additional brightly sighted visual information. As one gets the main part of the information with which he operates, visually, the acquaintance with the exhibited photographs further enhances the impact of student presentations.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent of corporate disclosure on human resources (HR) in the annual reports of top-performing Indian companies. Design/methodology/approach The paper explores the extent to which top 82 companies from India present information about HR in their annual reports. This paper examines the annual reports of each of the top Indian firms listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, using the “content analysis” method. Statistical tests have been performed to analyze the difference between the HR disclosure score across public and private sectors and disclosure variations among various industrial sectors. Findings In-house training programmers has been noticed to be the favorite item of disclosure followed by safety awards/certifications and statements regarding cordial relations with the employees/unions. A majority of the Indian firms have ignored significant HR issues such as employee welfare fund, maternity/paternity leaves, holiday benefits, employee loans, adopting old age homes, etc. Overall, the paper reflects low HR-related disclosures. Originality/value This is the first paper on the disclosure of HR by the Indian corporate sector in the CSR domain with a disclosure analysis for a period of nine years. This paper provides new directions for the literature in this area and may promote comparative studies on HR-based studies from different perspectives.

Abstract:
Sir John Salmond stated in the first edition of his Law of Torts (1907) that a wrongful act is deemed to be done by a servant in the course of employment if it is “either (a) a wrongful act authorised by the master, or (b) a wrongful and unauthorised mode of doing some act authorised by the master”. This passage, to be found at page 443 of Salmond & Heuston on the Law of Torts, 21st ed. (1996), has been cited with approval in many judgments. The first alternative is unproblematic, save that it refers to a situation where the master is primarily rather than merely vicariously liable. But the second can be difficult to apply, particularly where the servant’s tort is intentional. How can it be right to describe conversion by a servant of a fur which he has been told to clean (Morris v. C.W. Martin & Sons Ltd. [1966] 1 Q.B. 716) or deceit of his master’s client (Lloyd v. Grace, Smith & Co. [1912] A.C. 716) as a mode of doing an authorised act, when it is effectively the opposite of what he has been authorised to do? The problem is even more acute when the tort consists of trespass to the person. In Trotman v. North Yorkshire County Council [1999] L.G.R. 584 the Court of Appeal held the defendant Council not liable for a sexual assault by a teacher on a handicapped teenager committed to his care on a foreign holiday, on the ground that it was an independent act outside the course of employment. Trotman has now been overruled by a unanimous House of Lords in Lister v. Hesley Hall Ltd. [2001] 2 W.L.R. 1311, where it was held that the proprietors of a school for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties were vicariously liable for the systematic sexual abuse of two teenage boys by the warden of a boarding house.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse Cunard’s marketing communications during a period of significant social and economic change. The intention is to show, firstly, how the company sought to meet and influence potential passengers’ understanding of their travel needs and, secondly, how these would be met. Design/methodology/approach The companies’ marketing communications are analysed using Maslow’s hierarchy. This is a well known descriptor of human needs. Findings Beyond a description and review of Cunard’s advertising, Maslow’s model of needs is shown to provide a rationale to the company’s approach. In particular, it gives an understanding of the continued, though changing, use of images of the ship to meet the needs of different cohorts of passengers. It shows how carefully constructed images in both word and picture assuaged passengers’ concerns over social needs and how the company promised to meet the highest needs, whether that be for the holiday maker or the emigrant. Research limitations/implications During much of the period under discussion, much of the advertising design work was done in house. Though none of these files have survived, other sources of information (for example, house magazines and internal correspondence) provide an understanding of Cunard’s attitude to its customers and the business opportunities it saw in a changing market. Where specific dates for documents are not available, a chronology of ship building and use has been applied. Practical implications This paper shows how a well-established model can be used in a different way, adding to the understanding of a company adapting to changing social and economic conditions. Originality/value To the best of author’s knowledge, this is the first time that Maslow’s hierarchy has been used explicitly as a tool to analyse marketing and advertising material. Though the existing literature includes some discussion of shipping line posters visual content, there is little further discussion of their content or purpose in a changing social context. This paper provides a more structured analytical view.

Abstract:
In June 1913, on a holiday trip to Paris, George Wyndham died suddenly of a heart attack—he was not quite fifty years old. Shocked by this unexpected loss, colleagues in the Conservative Party and the House of Commons, whose inner circles he had occupied for a quarter of a century, organized the usual tributes. Obituaries laid out Wyndham's pedigree as scion of one of England's more romantic landed families, charted his meteoric rise in the 1890s under Arthur Balfour's patronage, referred briefly and discreetly to his troubled tenure as Irish secretary from 1900–1905, and applauded his versatility as a sportsman and a man of letters. Despite his truncated career, interest in Wyndham did not wane after these first homages. Working through the interruption of war, his family saw that collections of letters and essays, with the 1925 set prefaced by J. W. Mackail's “life,” reached the public. These materials prompted pen portraits and biographies that appeared at regular intervals into the 1970s.A largely sympathetic group of authors, those who wrote about Wyndham faced the interesting challenge of presenting as inspiring and exemplary a life whose disappointments had threatened to outweigh its achievements. The solution they found was one that Wyndham would have accepted, for, indeed, he helped to shape it. In their hands, George Wyndham became a modern Siegfried, the charming, versatile, and disinterested son of an extraordinary ruling class—now, alas, eclipsed—who had guided Britain through two centuries of unprecedented grandeur and prosperity.

Its rapid rate of biomass production, renewability, high level of CO2 fixation and storage, wide diameter, long-length, and durability are distinctive and highly desirable features which can benefit the new built environment Research interest in Guadua construction increased significantly after many Guadua-constructed buildings withstood or suffered only minor damage during an earthquake which reached 6.2 on the Richter scale in 1999, resulting in the standardization of Guadua in the seismic-resistant Colombian code (NSR, 2010). However, Guadua buildings constructed in the Americas and other parts of the world, whilst considered to be sustainable, are not fully characterised in terms of the preparation, use and disposal of Guadua. Furthermore, workability, building durability and the construction process have not been specifically documented and evaluated. The structure, properties and availability of Guadua are described in this paper. A case study on a recently built holiday house is presented illustrating the architectural, structural, environmental and technical performance of a Guadua building. This paper presents the construction process, discusses difficulties encountered during the building life cycle and highlights the need for similar assessments. It is concluded that with the aim of achieving a low carbon construction system using Guadua bamboo, challenges regarding manufacture, bio-deterioration, integration with conventional systems, and environmental impacts must be addressed.

Abstract:
AbstractRichard Baker died at Easter 2007 after a very short illness. It is sad that he died so soon after his retirement from the British American Tobacco Company at the end of 2005, and just as he was beginning to enjoy his new life, even though tobacco science still had a part to play.In 2006 Richard received the Tobacco Science Research Conference Lifetime Achievement Award, and at this time Thomas Perfetti, in this journal, described his distinguished scientific career in some detail. I will not repeat the list of these remarkable achievements, but can only add that he may well be the only scientist ever to be awarded the ultimate research degree, a D. Sc., by a British University for research activities while working for a tobacco company. Bearing in mind anti-tobacco sentiment this was a breath-taking achievement.Richard joined B.A.T. in 1971 and came to live quite near us on the outskirts of Southampton. We got to know Richard and Jackie well. Being a few years older several of the younger Thornton's then acted as baby-sitters as the younger Baker's appeared on the scene. Richard's enthusiasm for jogging and long-distance running was well known. As he jogged by the entrance to my house on foggy mornings he became a well-known health hazard, both to himself and to me.Richard's interests also included local politics and schools and indicated his great interest in people and their well-being. He was a kind and thoughtful colleague. When we moved house in 1976 Richard and Jackie sent us a good luck card, repeated in 1994 when we moved, briefly and spectacularly, to New Delhi.Richard's last years were evidently as full as ever, and he was still publishing scientific papers in his role as a Consultant. He was close to his family and children. Grandchildren, of whom he was very fond, had arrived. Richard and Jackie had also acquired a holiday home in their beloved Lake District in N.W. England.I, and everyone who met him, will have fond recollections of Richard as a delightful person and as an outstanding scientist, and above all we would like Jackie to know how we regarded him.

Abstract:
Edinburgh. She had recently taken up a locum tenens at the Royal Free Hospital in Gray's Inn Road in place of one of the resident staff who was away on holiday. The Lancet records that she was “seen in the hospital and about the wards up to noon on Saturday 15th (August), but since then nothing has been seen of her nor had anything been heard of her up to Thursday morning. We trust that before the paper is in our readers' hands Miss Hickman's whereabouts and safety will be made known to her father, with whose anxiety in the situation we sympathise deeply”. By 29 August nothing had been heard, though Miss Hickman's sudden and apparently motiveless disappearance had by then attracted a great deal of public interest. She had been a brilliant student, attending the London School of Medicine for Women, where she had consistently gained Honours and Prizes. Her first job was as Junior House Surgeon at Clapham Maternity Hospital. Her independent life-style (there was still controversy surrounding the practice of medicine by women) and the lack of motive for her disappearance led to a range of theories and explanations being brought to bear upon the mystery. The Lancet (29 August) suggested that Miss Hickman's disappearance “may be due to that curious condition of mentality which leads to ‘automatic wandering’ – a condition that is perfectly familiar to psychologists” and recommended to the reader a paper by Dr W. S. Colman, lecturer in forensic medicine. Entitled ‘A Case of Automatic Wandering lasting Five Days’, it described in detail two episodes of prolonged automatism. On each occasion, the patient had ‘woken up’ after a period of days, many miles from home.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent of corporate disclosure on human resources (HR) in the annual reports of top performing Indian companies. Design/methodology/approach – The paper explores the extent to which top 82 companies from India present information about HR in their annual reports. This study examines the annual reports of each of the top Indian firms listed on the Bombay stock exchange, using the “content analysis” method. Statistical tests have been performed to analyse the difference between the HR disclosure score across public and private sectors and disclosure variations among various industrial sectors. Findings – In-house training programmes has been noticed to be the favourite item of disclosure followed by safety awards/certifications and statements regarding cordial relations with the employees/unions. A majority of the Indian firms have ignored significant HR issues such as employee welfare fund, maternity/paternity leaves, holiday benefits, employee loans and adopting old age homes, etc. Overall, the study reflects low HR related disclosures. No statistically significant difference has been found between the mean HR disclosure from one industry to another and disclosure practices of the private and the public sector companies. Practical implications – The disclosure pattern of the Indian companies suggests that they only a few companies are concerned about employees’ welfare than the rest. This may motivate a change of the disclosure policy of the rest of the firms who may follow the reporting pattern of the most disclosing ones. Originality/value – This is first study on the disclosure of HR by the Indian corporate sector in the CSR domain with a disclosure analysis for a period of nine years . This research provides new directions for the literature in this area and may promote comparative studies on HR-based studies from different perspectives.
