Full text1. Health is a global concept based on a plurality of conceptions Each of these conceptions relies on a particular interpretation of health. The holistic conception is linked to the perception of a body-spirit-environment unity. This unity is included in a “spiritual whole”. Holistic health universe can be entered through a plurality of behaviours. The way of life and daily behaviours play a great role in the building of holistic health. The representations of health vary depending on their professional or lay nature. On the one hand, professional discourse influences lay representations, and on the other hand, professional discourse is reformulated by patients and consumers. Moreover, professional and consumer statutes tend to be moving and evolving, depending on the links existing between professionals and consumers. The positive conception of health is linked to consumer self-empowerment. The positivist conception of the body invaded by external elements appears through the perception of food and medications as factors of modification of the body. The functional conception acknowledges that illness has its roots inside of the patient’s body. In that sense, it reminds us of the holistic health conception which considers the individual as much as the source of illness as the source of potential solutions to illness. Finally, subtractive and additive conceptions appear through the fortification and purification behaviours. Likewise, the body is subjected to a plurality of conceptions. During the field research, the notions of “acted body” versus “body actor” emerged. These notions are linked to different types of relations between the individual and his body, which build his identity. Holistic health is characterized by a plurality of consumption behaviours and lifestyles. The individual can adopt several lifestyles, building his own global attitude to health. Products related to health are defined by a plurality of categorization logics, depending on attributes, context, on the type of discrimination process operated by consumers, whether analytical, taxonomical or by consumption objectives, and on the relations (complementarity or substitution) between the products

Full textThis thesis focuses on the academic writing problems encountered by advanced-level foreign students, and in particular the phenomena of grammatical errors that are not consistent with the linguistic level of learners related to the adaptation of their scriptural competence. This work is part of a plural perspective based on the principle of Complex Dynamic Systems. The theme is therefore addressed by three sociopsychological, (2) cognitive and (3) psychosocial studies that allow us to comprehend holistically the processes involved in the appropriation of academic scriptural practices. On the one hand, this thesis intends to contribute to the comprehension of the linguistic difficulties of the students by considering them as correlative of the particular constraints of the university discourses to produce with the aim, on the other hand, to engage reflections on the formation and the accompaniment of learners

Full textMost retailers strive to reach the omni-channel ideal in order to meet new market requirements (i.e. evolution of consumer behavior and competition standards). In this study, we seek to understand how multi-/cross-channel retailers transform into omni-channel, from an organizational point of view. Beyond the technological aspect (e.g. modernization of information systems and logistics), we investigate the cultural dimension of the change in “historical” actors (e.g. overhaul of processes and ways of thinking inside organizations and among their members). First, we explore the emergence of omni-channel and outline the cultural change that it requires; then, we investigate organizational culture as a means to achieving such cultural change; finally, when formulating marketing strategy, we propose storytelling as an internal marketing approach with collaborators, who are often the first recipients of change. We conduct multiple case studies to explore the narrative of change whilst favoring the emergence and deployment of an “omni-channel culture”. Our findings show confluent results about the way retailers change and tell this story. Their narrative reveal a shared “storytailing”, shaping the premises of a “cultural revolution” in retailing. It is reflected in the proposition of a widened conception of omni-channel through “omni-commerce” and a wish for retailers to define their agency

Full textThis thesis aimed to identify evidence of a holistic approach in the managerial practices of companies, contribute to the construction of a model with holistic characteristics to guide the design of managerial practices, and classify companies in regards to the the institutionalization stage of the use of elements of holistic approach in their practices. Holism has ancient roots, but its modern meaning was defined by South African thinker and statesman J.C. Smuts, in his book Holism and Evolution, published in 1926. Smuts considers holism as a factor that guides the evolution of the entire universe, with the formation of structures that can only be properly treated as wholes , in a sequence which starts with matter and life, continues through human personality, and finally reaches supra-individual organizations and human value systems. In epistemological terms, holism opposes reductionism, be it in Natural Sciences (atomism), and in Social Sciences (individualism). After Smuts, several authors explored holism, such as Quine (1951), Weil (1991), Esfeld (2001) and Descombes (2014). In regards to Administration, Savory (1999) approaches holism with particular focus on environmental issues. In Brazil, Almada et al (2004), Aligleri et al (2008), Cunha e Corrêa (2010), among others, with focus in different administrative activities, have made allusions which explore holistic approaches in management, such as viewing the companies as totalities, as well as the connections between those totalities. This qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research utilized an interpretative approach, which helped the researcher understand a reality which contains objective as well as subjective aspects. Twenty companies were researched, chosen randomly among companies within the Novo Mercado segment of the BM&F Bovespa (São Paulo Stock Exchange), which has strict corporate rules. Data was collected in the companies\' annual reports and other documents available in the companies\' websites. Information collected was not restricted to general data about the companies, but also included managerial practices, sustainability and corporate and social responsibility. The Theory of Institutionalization provided criteria to classify companies, in various stages of institutionalization, in regards to the use of holistic approach in their practices. In order to obtain this classification, it was necessary to build a model, or prototype for holistic evaluation, as no such model had been found in previous studies. This prototype, the first result of the research, was built through comparisons between holistic principles, taken from the work of Smuts, with the Theory of Systems, the Theory of Cybernetics and Complexity, and the Theory of Stakeholders. After careful analysis of the companies\' practices, the research suggests that future studies should include an evaluation of the companies\' holistic approach of their activities and social endeavors. Also observed were different evolution mechanisms and factors that could limit this evolution. Finally, it was possible to present, based on deductions on data and theories, a hypothesis to be tested that companies can benefit by utilizing holistic approach in their practices. This study fills an important void in modern business theories, helping companies deal with a complex world using rational tools, which do not harm the complexity of the holistic nature of reality.

Full textCharles Taylor is one of the most important and influential contemporary philosophers. In the political field, the liberal-communitarian debate is the theme where his contributions are most recognized. Nevertheless, the study of Taylors political thought has been limited. In the liberal-communitarian theorical debate arena, his so called 6 communitarian criticism has many times been taken as an advocacy answer to possible mistakes or limitations of liberalisms moral ideals. The most common conclusion is that the taylorian thought opposes itself to the liberal tradition and it has been identified with communitarianism theories, republicanism, or even with multiculturalism. Taylors reflection, however, is concerned with another more ample aim: the development of identity and good conceptions based in ontological arguments. The purpose of his work is not to question liberalistic moral ideals, but to reconfigure those in a specific ontological background, as well as to amplify the set of allowable moral and political relevant conceptions of goods to contemporary society. The intent of this paper is indeed to explore the conceptual structure of what we could call holistic individualism, a political thinking typology which although concerned with the advocacy of freedom, pluralism and autonomy also continues to take into account the inextricable social nature of agency and human goods conception. Hopefully, with this interpretation key we will be able to put in place a most systematic account of Charles Taylors political reflection, articulating its different and sparse contributions in the political debate in a more comprehensive landscape which will be referenced to his agency, self and modernity discussions. In the end, we suggest that the Canadian author is closer to what we could call a liberal tradition thinking than his usual classification would allow.

Full textThe current tendencies in the training of human resources appear for the professionals' development with a critical and reflexive posture, with abilities that are beside technical aspects, being constituted a great challenge to preparing institutions. In nursing formation we also noticed this tendency and, in spite of the wide speech of the human being totality, we believed that technical dimension is still the essential concern in this process. We understand that are not any separations between personnel's professional dimension, where a person resides in a professional being and the professional integrates the human person, in a dialectical way. Starting from a humanistic referential, we developed this study in a qualitative approach, and sought to identify and to analyse the student's perceptions and feelings about Nursing course and its relationship with their own formation. The data were collected through individual interviews with the academics of the Nursing College at Federal University of Goiás, whose speeches were submitted to the content analysis. The results revealed that the students understand their teaching centred in technician-scientific knowledge, specifying the needs from those that they will attend, without considering the person that attends them, besides signalling that the academic way is permeated by several feelings that appear in function of experiences that happens. We considered that the lifted up aspects in this research offer important subjects to be rethought at Nursing Colleges, in the sense of contemplate student's formation as an integral person and integrated in their actions.

Full textThe dissertation purports to show that the consistency of the instrumentalist interpretationof quantum mechanics (upon which the logico-operational reconstructions of thetheory rest) cannot be defended without relinquishing the extensional semantic frameworkof classical logic. I examine in particular Niels Bohr’s argument, arguing that hisphysical analysis of measurement is insufficient to establish the coherence of the conditionalconstrual of quantum probabilities that he advocates. Rather than attemptingto ‘complete’ Bohr’s approach by means of a more sophisticated and comprehensiveaccount of the physical processes involved in the act of observation (e.g., decoherence),I suggest that the measurement problem should be viewed as the outgrowth of an inadequatetheory of meaning. I discuss, and point out some limitations of, Bohr’s ownpioneering critique of the representational assumptions inherent to the classical accountof phenomena, and I conclude by suggesting that the endorsement of an inferentialistsemantic approach would not only contribute to defusing the measurement problem, butmight also enable the a priori justification of the structural features of quantum probability(in terms of the conceptual relations presupposed by any language which allowsfor objective assertions)

This is a study on Duhem-Quine thesis. Its purpose was to investigate epistemological differences and affinities between the holistic positions of Willard Quine and Pierre Duhem. This analysis showed that two quite different interpretations of Duhem-Quine thesis are possible: a weak version, argued by Duhem, and a strong version, more radical, argued by Quine in his article Two dogmas of empiricism. The study of holism, in this perspective, highlighted the importance of this subject to the Philosophy of Science and Language and how this approach can shed light on important philosophical issues, such as the relationship between scientific observations and theories; the thesis of the empirical underdetermination of theories; the theory-ladenness of observation sentences; the theory choice process; the inscrutability of reference; the theory of linguistic learning; among others.

Abstract: Countless works and researches show that, every day, the human relationships are being influenced by the communication means, in way not always salutary. Such facts drive the individual to an antisocial and individualistic behavior that will be reflected at the classroom. As educators, however, we cannot change such situation without modifying our actions. The search of the solemnity-knowledge, of the responsibility, of the cooperation, of the decision and of the initiative, they assume special importance in the school extent, be in our children¿s formation and young, be in the own formation of those that intend to educate them. The Transpersonal Psycology, without opposing to the other visions of the problems that happen at classroom, has as proposal to accomplish an unificator service, something that as the recycling of the fragments to compose a better holistic vision, including of the being, through exercises and techniques, seeking to soften the built-in conflicts in the relationships in the classroom atmosphere. In the work field we developed those techniques and exercises with a group of academical students of the pedagogy course, from an entity of Santos, therefore, future teachers. We explained our proposal initially, we distributed questionnaires for the coordination and for the own studentes, so that we could make comparisons later. After we choose the most appropriate techniques to the group, we began our work, using then, yoga techniques, applying breathing techniques, of relaxation, creative visualization, solemnity-knowledge texts and that rescue their self-esteem - all interlaced in the search of an integration among mind, body and cosmoses. We also used a Kirlian machine, to photograph the breeze of the groups before and after the sessions. With such procedure, we verified the balance degree or conflicts denoted of each picture, as well as the possible modifications happened in the breeze after the exercises. In the end of the process we gave them the final questionnaire that subsidized our conclusions. We verified significant changes in the participants in what concerns to the largest intercrop integration, soften of the intrapsyquic conflicts, a less fragmented vision of the knowledge and the development or the altruistic love. We concluded our research with the presentation of the collected data

Full textOne of the most important debates in the philosophy of science concerns the relations between levels of explanation and, therefore, levels of science. This controversy, closely related to the metaphysical problem regarding the levels of reality, has been marked by a polarization between reductionists and their critics, generally described as holists. The first chapter of this work is intended to offer a typology of methodological stances on explanation avoiding this polarization between holism and reductionism. Such a marked disagreement results in a series of misunderstandings, contributing to the belief, also found in science teaching, that reductionism provides the only scientific explanations, being any alternative stance regarded as opposed to the canons of science. A typology proposed by Levine and colleagues in 1987 is taken as a starting-point for the discussion. This typology avoids the above-mentioned polarization, including the following positions: methodological individualism (reductionism), holism, antireductionism, and atomism. Due to some problems found in Levine and colleagues approach to the problem, the construction of a new typology is taken as a desirable objective. Some tendencies, like type physicalism in the philosophy of mind, the unity of science programmes of Carnap and Oppenheim & Putnam, and genic selectionism and gene-centrism in biology, are examined, being characterized as forms of reductionism, according to Levine and colleagues typology. The term nonreductive physicalism is preferred to antireductionism, being emphasized that, despite being qualified as nonreductive, this variety of physicalism assigns a role to reduction in the explanation of macrophenomena. Although nonreductive physicalists reject ontological and full epistemological reduction, they admit partial epistemological reduction, which does not result in a leveling of the phenomena to the domain of a single science, but only in the causal/mechanical explanation of why and how macrophenomena occur in mereologically-complex systems or objects. Moderate versions of reductionism, such as those of Bunge and Campbell, are examined, as well as some varieties of holism, such as Capras holistic paradigm, Taylors holism, and Mayrs holistic approach. An analysis of those diverse approaches leads to a typology including six methodological stances: atomism, radical reductionism, moderate reductionism, nonreductive physicalism, moderate holism, and radical holism. In the second chapter, the first systematic formulation of non-reductive physicalism, emergentism, is examined. The main goal is to propose a concept of property emergence that avoids the difficulties presented in the literature, providing the ontology simultaneously materialist and non-reductionist demanded by a cogent formulation of nonreductive physicalism. Initially, the origins of emergentism, its relations to vitalism, and the tenets that compose its hard core (sensu Lakatos) are examined. The theories of levels advanced by Salthe, Bunge, Blitz, and Emmeche and coworkers are discussed, being taken as the frames of reference for the treatment of the emergence concept Emmeche and coworkers ontology and Dennetts mild realism. A series of problems concerning the concept of emergence is examined, emphasis being given to the problem of downward causation: How to explain in what sense a system or 4 whole modifies its component parts, resulting in the emergence of qualitative novelty, without violating physicalist premises, such as the belief in the universality of Physics or the physical causal closure? After arguing that supervenience physicalism, presented as a version of non-reductive physicalism alternative to emergentism, fails in fulfilling its non-reductive purposes, the investigation of a philosophical alternative combining the notions of supervenience and property emergence is proposed. The problem of downward causation is then discussed in detail and the first issue to be dealt with is the possibility that the treatment of causality in Aristotelian philosophy offers a solution to this problem in a physicalist framework. The four Aristotelian causal modes and the distinction between form and matter are examined, as a basis for the discussion of the three versions of downward causation (strong, weak, and medium) distinguished by Emmeche and coworkers. Medium downward causation provides a way of combining the notions of supervenience and property emergence in a formulation of emergentism compatible with the identification of higher-level entities with special cases of physical systems, without the (radical) reductionist consequences that many scientists and philosophers regard as undesirable. In the frame of this variety of emergentism, a new definition of an emergent property is put forward. At last, The problem of the reality of emergents is discussed, from the standpoint of Dennetts mild realism. In the third chapter, some consequences of the ontological, epistemological and methodological features discussed in this work for the teaching of Biology and other sciences are discussed.

The professional interaction between Mechanical Engineers and Designers is increasingly recommended both in academia in the production process. These professionals are embedded in a process of knowledge complementation and experience in their professional time. Regarding the academic process, the students of both courses are bound to a range of disciplines, whose contents are often presented in high sectioned, which makes the learning focused and systematized, determining constraints in the process of obtaining the knowledge. This thesis indicates situations where it is perceptible how a range of disciplines with focused programmatic content can interfere with a broad overview of the context in which it is inserted the professional future. It also notes the perception of Mechanical Engineers and Designers have of each other in their careers. Also included research and tabulated experiences revealing the importance of the inclusion of trans epistemological attitudes, with the format and discussion of the process observed. The integration of the practical vision of events and perception of the holistic component also is a factor of consideration. The goal is to suggest new proposals for disciplinary interactions, aiming criticism of the interdisciplinary model and propose disciplinary guidelines that promote the interaction between disciplines and different fields of knowledge rather than the concept of hard practices high sectioned.

Full text[. . . ] Since the principle of effective demand is cornerstone of the General Theory, supply and demand aggregate price curves must be derivated and explained at the macroeconomic level. They are the underlying foundation of macroeconomic equilibrium. It is indeed true that Keynes never endeavoured to draw those curves. Post-keynesians like S. Weintraub and P. Davidson tried therefore to use a microeconomic approach to explain the supply and price curves. Their approach is not germane to what Keynes had in mind. This Ph. Thesis uses a method, which fits the two meaning of the supply and demand price cuves. Its cornerstone is the introduction of a macroeconomic production function. [. . . ]

Full textThis Thesis submitted for Master of Theology discourse about two areas: Christian spirituality and eco-holistic paradigm. The Modern Paradigm, the science, the technology and the globalization have led the man to a wonderful condition of development and knowledge. The rationality of the dominant paradigm, with its brand rationalist-mechanist-reductionist, introduced the concept of progress as economic development, leading capitalism to the summit and man to a final situation. Life has never been so threatened in humanity‟s history. Considering the XXI century ecological and social crisis, human being is perplexed. The dominant rationality does not offer solutions that address the modern issues. Then emerges the Eco-Holistic Paradigm expressing new: consciousness, ethics and thought. Humanity sees itself as a unique community that inhabits the same house: the planet Earth. The ecology, quantum physics and spirituality build new bridges between science and reality and it arouses to a transformation in humanity‟s perspective. In this context, Christianity, with its historical and embodied spirituality, express the faith in Jesus Christ good news and get in dialogue with macroshift. The Christian spirituality, while expressing its identity with Jesus Christ good news and with the Kingdom of God mission, seek to promote the fullness of the human community in the inculturation of Gospel, in defense of all forms and expressions of life and re-enchantment in front the mystery of the universe.

Full textIt s here proposed in this research a study of the human spirituality as intelligence. The primary purpose was to show that the human being is endowed with a spiritual understanding, that is, he carries within him a divine spark capable of making sense and meaning to his life, and that from this emerges the need for that human being to have a new vision of the world. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first deals with the contextualization of the historical process by which humanity has experienced, thus presenting a story about the paradigm of rationality and the transition to the new paradigm. The second explains how spirituality is understood in the traditional paradigm and the new paradigms, as well as the urgency and importance of spirituality as intelligence, highlighting it s urgency today. The third shows a correlation between concepts and theories presented in previous chapters, utilising Jesus as an example, a person who had the spiritual intelligence as an evident trace in his being.

Abstract: The professional interaction between Mechanical Engineers and Designers is increasingly recommended both in academia in the production process.

Full textThe present work has as its main objective to confront two lexical semantic theories, namely, the decompositionalist Generative Lexicon Theory, by James Pustejovsky, and the atomist Mental Representation Theory, by Jerry Fodor. Our proposal is to present a brief history of lexical semantics in order to bring the reader closer to our subject. We will also present the above-mentioned theories, so we can, in the final chapter, compare them. This comparison will be guided by the Interface Theory, by Jorge Campos da Costa.

Full textA preliminary study tested the averaging and additive effects of information processing and served as the foundation for two subsequent explorations. The first examined cultural differences in information processing through presenting subjects of different cultural backgrounds with presenter and evaluator situations.
In the second study, individualistic and collectivist priming methodology was used to prompt subjects' ability to process information individually or holistically. Established measures of religiosity and connectedness were examined as possible moderators of the relationship between self-construal and information integration. Results show that differences between subjects primed in the interdependent condition were moderated by religiosity. Possible explanations for this effect are discussed.

Full textThe thesis begins by explaining, in a first part, the genealogy of a heterodox tradition called “holist monetary approach”, which refuses dichotomic theories and the classical conception of the veil of money. It shows the proximities of these positions with a tradition consisting in thinking money as a “total social fact” involving far more than the three usual economic functions attributed to money. Recent research works conducted in France around Aglietta and Orléan fit in with this tradition. The thesis also leans on theories developed in Keynes’ wake, sharing with the “social fact” approaches a holist methodology. The latter involves a main focus on macroeconomic analysis, which is, in our opinion, the only efficient way to consider money as the first theoretical basis for economics. The thesis shows then, in a second part, that the themes enlightened on the one hand by post-Keynesian macroeconomics (radical uncertainty, endogenous money, etc. ) and on the other hand by new institutionalist monetary theories (legitimacy, trust, sovereignty, money as a social link, etc. ) enable, when considered together, a better understanding of the euro and of the European Central Bank’s monetary policy. Thus, two questions, both equally important but generally not resolved globally by the economists may find an answer: the question of the integration of money into the economic analysis, and the question of how money is then accepted by the economic agents
