Abstract:

Abstract:
1. Health is a global concept based on a plurality of conceptions Each of these conceptions relies on a particular interpretation of health. The holistic conception is linked to the perception of a body-spirit-environment unity. This unity is included in a “spiritual whole”. Holistic health universe can be entered through a plurality of behaviours. The way of life and daily behaviours play a great role in the building of holistic health. The representations of health vary depending on their professional or lay nature. On the one hand, professional discourse influences lay representations, and on the other hand, professional discourse is reformulated by patients and consumers. Moreover, professional and consumer statutes tend to be moving and evolving, depending on the links existing between professionals and consumers. The positive conception of health is linked to consumer self-empowerment. The positivist conception of the body invaded by external elements appears through the perception of food and medications as factors of modification of the body. The functional conception acknowledges that illness has its roots inside of the patient’s body. In that sense, it reminds us of the holistic health conception which considers the individual as much as the source of illness as the source of potential solutions to illness. Finally, subtractive and additive conceptions appear through the fortification and purification behaviours. Likewise, the body is subjected to a plurality of conceptions. During the field research, the notions of “acted body” versus “body actor” emerged. These notions are linked to different types of relations between the individual and his body, which build his identity. Holistic health is characterized by a plurality of consumption behaviours and lifestyles. The individual can adopt several lifestyles, building his own global attitude to health. Products related to health are defined by a plurality of categorization logics, depending on attributes, context, on the type of discrimination process operated by consumers, whether analytical, taxonomical or by consumption objectives, and on the relations (complementarity or substitution) between the products

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the academic writing problems encountered by advanced-level foreign students, and in particular the phenomena of grammatical errors that are not consistent with the linguistic level of learners related to the adaptation of their scriptural competence. This work is part of a plural perspective based on the principle of Complex Dynamic Systems. The theme is therefore addressed by three sociopsychological, (2) cognitive and (3) psychosocial studies that allow us to comprehend holistically the processes involved in the appropriation of academic scriptural practices. On the one hand, this thesis intends to contribute to the comprehension of the linguistic difficulties of the students by considering them as correlative of the particular constraints of the university discourses to produce with the aim, on the other hand, to engage reflections on the formation and the accompaniment of learners

Abstract:

Thesis, Lille 2, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LIL2D021/document.

Abstract:
Most retailers strive to reach the omni-channel ideal in order to meet new market requirements (i.e. evolution of consumer behavior and competition standards). In this study, we seek to understand how multi-/cross-channel retailers transform into omni-channel, from an organizational point of view. Beyond the technological aspect (e.g. modernization of information systems and logistics), we investigate the cultural dimension of the change in “historical” actors (e.g. overhaul of processes and ways of thinking inside organizations and among their members). First, we explore the emergence of omni-channel and outline the cultural change that it requires; then, we investigate organizational culture as a means to achieving such cultural change; finally, when formulating marketing strategy, we propose storytelling as an internal marketing approach with collaborators, who are often the first recipients of change. We conduct multiple case studies to explore the narrative of change whilst favoring the emergence and deployment of an “omni-channel culture”. Our findings show confluent results about the way retailers change and tell this story. Their narrative reveal a shared “storytailing”, shaping the premises of a “cultural revolution” in retailing. It is reflected in the proposition of a widened conception of omni-channel through “omni-commerce” and a wish for retailers to define their agency

Abstract:
A journey inside history, ideology and psychology with a key, the antagonism between materialism and idealism. A new point of view arise and create a new kind of analysis on our modern times. From Martin Luther to today, we explore differents systems : Nazism, Socialism and Capitalism. We will find, in each system and so in human mind, this heuristic antagonism

Mirkin, Philip Joshua. "The effect of holistic artistic devices on learner interest in Grade 9 Chemistry." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/65445.

Full text
Abstract:
The practice of science requires careful observation, experimentation and rational thinking accompanied by imaginative and intuitive insights to thrive in a mood of cutting edge exploration. South African Grade 9 Chemistry deals with established facts, usually devoid of artistic stimuli for capturing the imagination or awakening the intuitions of most learners. Many previous attempts to use the arts in the teaching of Chemistry are limited to the use of pictures, and less often, music and drama which are often superficial or even distracting from the real content. Most research into Science education has its focus on improving academic results with almost no research being conducted in the use of holistic, artistic devices to improve learner interest. Child-centred, holistic education indicates that the integration of rational logic with personal, intuitive knowing through story and the arts is a seed to sustained learner interest. This study used video-recorded experiments and a poem with holistic use of story, metaphor, rhythm and rhyme to characterise the behaviour of acids, bases and salts, to awaken greater learner interest. Class discussion centred on inquiry-based learning which challenged the validity of the characterisations used in the poem, completed the holistically integrated intervention. Changes in learner interest levels were determined by matched pairs in the pre-test and post-test. The research was undertaken with 222 learners from four schools in the greater Tshwane region. The results show that such holistically integrated devices, or stimuli, significantly increased learner interest through good engagement in the lesson as well as an improved perception of their grasp of the content, feelings towards Chemistry and relevance of Chemistry for their lives. As a first-of-its-kind research, further research in the use of appropriate holistic, artistic devices in Science education is recommended. Research into the longer-term use of such devices as well as the effects on learner academic results should be tested. This research indicates that teachers should consider providing a greater context and characterisation, with a broader range of stimuli, when presenting Chemistry to Grade 9 learners to allow them to relate to the experimental and academic content in a more imaginative, intuitive and personally meaningful way. The presentation of this dissertation will follow the courses of a dinner feast in the hope that the reader will be nourished holistically on multiple levels.

Abstract:
This thesis aimed to identify evidence of a holistic approach in the managerial practices of companies, contribute to the construction of a model with holistic characteristics to guide the design of managerial practices, and classify companies in regards to the the institutionalization stage of the use of elements of holistic approach in their practices. Holism has ancient roots, but its modern meaning was defined by South African thinker and statesman J.C. Smuts, in his book Holism and Evolution, published in 1926. Smuts considers holism as a factor that guides the evolution of the entire universe, with the formation of structures that can only be properly treated as wholes , in a sequence which starts with matter and life, continues through human personality, and finally reaches supra-individual organizations and human value systems. In epistemological terms, holism opposes reductionism, be it in Natural Sciences (atomism), and in Social Sciences (individualism). After Smuts, several authors explored holism, such as Quine (1951), Weil (1991), Esfeld (2001) and Descombes (2014). In regards to Administration, Savory (1999) approaches holism with particular focus on environmental issues. In Brazil, Almada et al (2004), Aligleri et al (2008), Cunha e Corrêa (2010), among others, with focus in different administrative activities, have made allusions which explore holistic approaches in management, such as viewing the companies as totalities, as well as the connections between those totalities. This qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research utilized an interpretative approach, which helped the researcher understand a reality which contains objective as well as subjective aspects. Twenty companies were researched, chosen randomly among companies within the Novo Mercado segment of the BM&F Bovespa (São Paulo Stock Exchange), which has strict corporate rules. Data was collected in the companies\' annual reports and other documents available in the companies\' websites. Information collected was not restricted to general data about the companies, but also included managerial practices, sustainability and corporate and social responsibility. The Theory of Institutionalization provided criteria to classify companies, in various stages of institutionalization, in regards to the use of holistic approach in their practices. In order to obtain this classification, it was necessary to build a model, or prototype for holistic evaluation, as no such model had been found in previous studies. This prototype, the first result of the research, was built through comparisons between holistic principles, taken from the work of Smuts, with the Theory of Systems, the Theory of Cybernetics and Complexity, and the Theory of Stakeholders. After careful analysis of the companies\' practices, the research suggests that future studies should include an evaluation of the companies\' holistic approach of their activities and social endeavors. Also observed were different evolution mechanisms and factors that could limit this evolution. Finally, it was possible to present, based on deductions on data and theories, a hypothesis to be tested that companies can benefit by utilizing holistic approach in their practices. This study fills an important void in modern business theories, helping companies deal with a complex world using rational tools, which do not harm the complexity of the holistic nature of reality.

Abstract:
Charles Taylor is one of the most important and influential contemporary philosophers. In the political field, the liberal-communitarian debate is the theme where his contributions are most recognized. Nevertheless, the study of Taylors political thought has been limited. In the liberal-communitarian theorical debate arena, his so called 6 communitarian criticism has many times been taken as an advocacy answer to possible mistakes or limitations of liberalisms moral ideals. The most common conclusion is that the taylorian thought opposes itself to the liberal tradition and it has been identified with communitarianism theories, republicanism, or even with multiculturalism. Taylors reflection, however, is concerned with another more ample aim: the development of identity and good conceptions based in ontological arguments. The purpose of his work is not to question liberalistic moral ideals, but to reconfigure those in a specific ontological background, as well as to amplify the set of allowable moral and political relevant conceptions of goods to contemporary society. The intent of this paper is indeed to explore the conceptual structure of what we could call holistic individualism, a political thinking typology which although concerned with the advocacy of freedom, pluralism and autonomy also continues to take into account the inextricable social nature of agency and human goods conception. Hopefully, with this interpretation key we will be able to put in place a most systematic account of Charles Taylors political reflection, articulating its different and sparse contributions in the political debate in a more comprehensive landscape which will be referenced to his agency, self and modernity discussions. In the end, we suggest that the Canadian author is closer to what we could call a liberal tradition thinking than his usual classification would allow.

Abstract:
The current tendencies in the training of human resources appear for the professionals' development with a critical and reflexive posture, with abilities that are beside technical aspects, being constituted a great challenge to preparing institutions. In nursing formation we also noticed this tendency and, in spite of the wide speech of the human being totality, we believed that technical dimension is still the essential concern in this process. We understand that are not any separations between personnel's professional dimension, where a person resides in a professional being and the professional integrates the human person, in a dialectical way. Starting from a humanistic referential, we developed this study in a qualitative approach, and sought to identify and to analyse the student's perceptions and feelings about Nursing course and its relationship with their own formation. The data were collected through individual interviews with the academics of the Nursing College at Federal University of Goiás, whose speeches were submitted to the content analysis. The results revealed that the students understand their teaching centred in technician-scientific knowledge, specifying the needs from those that they will attend, without considering the person that attends them, besides signalling that the academic way is permeated by several feelings that appear in function of experiences that happens. We considered that the lifted up aspects in this research offer important subjects to be rethought at Nursing Colleges, in the sense of contemplate student's formation as an integral person and integrated in their actions.

Abstract:
The dissertation purports to show that the consistency of the instrumentalist interpretationof quantum mechanics (upon which the logico-operational reconstructions of thetheory rest) cannot be defended without relinquishing the extensional semantic frameworkof classical logic. I examine in particular Niels Bohr’s argument, arguing that hisphysical analysis of measurement is insufficient to establish the coherence of the conditionalconstrual of quantum probabilities that he advocates. Rather than attemptingto ‘complete’ Bohr’s approach by means of a more sophisticated and comprehensiveaccount of the physical processes involved in the act of observation (e.g., decoherence),I suggest that the measurement problem should be viewed as the outgrowth of an inadequatetheory of meaning. I discuss, and point out some limitations of, Bohr’s ownpioneering critique of the representational assumptions inherent to the classical accountof phenomena, and I conclude by suggesting that the endorsement of an inferentialistsemantic approach would not only contribute to defusing the measurement problem, butmight also enable the a priori justification of the structural features of quantum probability(in terms of the conceptual relations presupposed by any language which allowsfor objective assertions)

This is a study on Duhem-Quine thesis. Its purpose was to investigate epistemological differences and affinities between the holistic positions of Willard Quine and Pierre Duhem. This analysis showed that two quite different interpretations of Duhem-Quine thesis are possible: a weak version, argued by Duhem, and a strong version, more radical, argued by Quine in his article Two dogmas of empiricism. The study of holism, in this perspective, highlighted the importance of this subject to the Philosophy of Science and Language and how this approach can shed light on important philosophical issues, such as the relationship between scientific observations and theories; the thesis of the empirical underdetermination of theories; the theory-ladenness of observation sentences; the theory choice process; the inscrutability of reference; the theory of linguistic learning; among others.

Abstract: Countless works and researches show that, every day, the human relationships are being influenced by the communication means, in way not always salutary. Such facts drive the individual to an antisocial and individualistic behavior that will be reflected at the classroom. As educators, however, we cannot change such situation without modifying our actions. The search of the solemnity-knowledge, of the responsibility, of the cooperation, of the decision and of the initiative, they assume special importance in the school extent, be in our children¿s formation and young, be in the own formation of those that intend to educate them. The Transpersonal Psycology, without opposing to the other visions of the problems that happen at classroom, has as proposal to accomplish an unificator service, something that as the recycling of the fragments to compose a better holistic vision, including of the being, through exercises and techniques, seeking to soften the built-in conflicts in the relationships in the classroom atmosphere. In the work field we developed those techniques and exercises with a group of academical students of the pedagogy course, from an entity of Santos, therefore, future teachers. We explained our proposal initially, we distributed questionnaires for the coordination and for the own studentes, so that we could make comparisons later. After we choose the most appropriate techniques to the group, we began our work, using then, yoga techniques, applying breathing techniques, of relaxation, creative visualization, solemnity-knowledge texts and that rescue their self-esteem - all interlaced in the search of an integration among mind, body and cosmoses. We also used a Kirlian machine, to photograph the breeze of the groups before and after the sessions. With such procedure, we verified the balance degree or conflicts denoted of each picture, as well as the possible modifications happened in the breeze after the exercises. In the end of the process we gave them the final questionnaire that subsidized our conclusions. We verified significant changes in the participants in what concerns to the largest intercrop integration, soften of the intrapsyquic conflicts, a less fragmented vision of the knowledge and the development or the altruistic love. We concluded our research with the presentation of the collected data

Abstract:
A análise destas diferentes abordagens conduz a uma tipologia contendo seis posições metodológicas: atomismo, reducionismo radical, reducionismo moderado, fisicalismo não-redutivo, holismo moderado e holismo radical.
One of the most important debates in the philosophy of science concerns the relations between levels of explanation and, therefore, levels of science. This controversy, closely related to the metaphysical problem regarding the levels of reality, has been marked by a polarization between reductionists and their critics, generally described as holists. The first chapter of this work is intended to offer a typology of methodological stances on explanation avoiding this polarization between holism and reductionism. Such a marked disagreement results in a series of misunderstandings, contributing to the belief, also found in science teaching, that reductionism provides the only scientific explanations, being any alternative stance regarded as opposed to the canons of science. A typology proposed by Levine and colleagues in 1987 is taken as a starting-point for the discussion. This typology avoids the above-mentioned polarization, including the following positions: methodological individualism (reductionism), holism, antireductionism, and atomism. Due to some problems found in Levine and colleagues approach to the problem, the construction of a new typology is taken as a desirable objective. Some tendencies, like type physicalism in the philosophy of mind, the unity of science programmes of Carnap and Oppenheim & Putnam, and genic selectionism and gene-centrism in biology, are examined, being characterized as forms of reductionism, according to Levine and colleagues typology. The term nonreductive physicalism is preferred to antireductionism, being emphasized that, despite being qualified as nonreductive, this variety of physicalism assigns a role to reduction in the explanation of macrophenomena. Although nonreductive physicalists reject ontological and full epistemological reduction, they admit partial epistemological reduction, which does not result in a leveling of the phenomena to the domain of a single science, but only in the causal/mechanical explanation of why and how macrophenomena occur in mereologically-complex systems or objects. Moderate versions of reductionism, such as those of Bunge and Campbell, are examined, as well as some varieties of holism, such as Capras holistic paradigm, Taylors holism, and Mayrs holistic approach. An analysis of those diverse approaches leads to a typology including six methodological stances: atomism, radical reductionism, moderate reductionism, nonreductive physicalism, moderate holism, and radical holism. In the second chapter, the first systematic formulation of non-reductive physicalism, emergentism, is examined. The main goal is to propose a concept of property emergence that avoids the difficulties presented in the literature, providing the ontology simultaneously materialist and non-reductionist demanded by a cogent formulation of nonreductive physicalism. Initially, the origins of emergentism, its relations to vitalism, and the tenets that compose its hard core (sensu Lakatos) are examined. The theories of levels advanced by Salthe, Bunge, Blitz, and Emmeche and coworkers are discussed, being taken as the frames of reference for the treatment of the emergence concept Emmeche and coworkers ontology and Dennetts mild realism. A series of problems concerning the concept of emergence is examined, emphasis being given to the problem of downward causation: How to explain in what sense a system or 4 whole modifies its component parts, resulting in the emergence of qualitative novelty, without violating physicalist premises, such as the belief in the universality of Physics or the physical causal closure? After arguing that supervenience physicalism, presented as a version of non-reductive physicalism alternative to emergentism, fails in fulfilling its non-reductive purposes, the investigation of a philosophical alternative combining the notions of supervenience and property emergence is proposed. The problem of downward causation is then discussed in detail and the first issue to be dealt with is the possibility that the treatment of causality in Aristotelian philosophy offers a solution to this problem in a physicalist framework. The four Aristotelian causal modes and the distinction between form and matter are examined, as a basis for the discussion of the three versions of downward causation (strong, weak, and medium) distinguished by Emmeche and coworkers. Medium downward causation provides a way of combining the notions of supervenience and property emergence in a formulation of emergentism compatible with the identification of higher-level entities with special cases of physical systems, without the (radical) reductionist consequences that many scientists and philosophers regard as undesirable. In the frame of this variety of emergentism, a new definition of an emergent property is put forward. At last, The problem of the reality of emergents is discussed, from the standpoint of Dennetts mild realism. In the third chapter, some consequences of the ontological, epistemological and methodological features discussed in this work for the teaching of Biology and other sciences are discussed.

The professional interaction between Mechanical Engineers and Designers is increasingly recommended both in academia in the production process. These professionals are embedded in a process of knowledge complementation and experience in their professional time. Regarding the academic process, the students of both courses are bound to a range of disciplines, whose contents are often presented in high sectioned, which makes the learning focused and systematized, determining constraints in the process of obtaining the knowledge. This thesis indicates situations where it is perceptible how a range of disciplines with focused programmatic content can interfere with a broad overview of the context in which it is inserted the professional future. It also notes the perception of Mechanical Engineers and Designers have of each other in their careers. Also included research and tabulated experiences revealing the importance of the inclusion of trans epistemological attitudes, with the format and discussion of the process observed. The integration of the practical vision of events and perception of the holistic component also is a factor of consideration. The goal is to suggest new proposals for disciplinary interactions, aiming criticism of the interdisciplinary model and propose disciplinary guidelines that promote the interaction between disciplines and different fields of knowledge rather than the concept of hard practices high sectioned.

Abstract:
[. . . ] Since the principle of effective demand is cornerstone of the General Theory, supply and demand aggregate price curves must be derivated and explained at the macroeconomic level. They are the underlying foundation of macroeconomic equilibrium. It is indeed true that Keynes never endeavoured to draw those curves. Post-keynesians like S. Weintraub and P. Davidson tried therefore to use a microeconomic approach to explain the supply and price curves. Their approach is not germane to what Keynes had in mind. This Ph. Thesis uses a method, which fits the two meaning of the supply and demand price cuves. Its cornerstone is the introduction of a macroeconomic production function. [. . . ]

This Thesis submitted for Master of Theology discourse about two areas: Christian spirituality and eco-holistic paradigm. The Modern Paradigm, the science, the technology and the globalization have led the man to a wonderful condition of development and knowledge. The rationality of the dominant paradigm, with its brand rationalist-mechanist-reductionist, introduced the concept of progress as economic development, leading capitalism to the summit and man to a final situation. Life has never been so threatened in humanity‟s history. Considering the XXI century ecological and social crisis, human being is perplexed. The dominant rationality does not offer solutions that address the modern issues. Then emerges the Eco-Holistic Paradigm expressing new: consciousness, ethics and thought. Humanity sees itself as a unique community that inhabits the same house: the planet Earth. The ecology, quantum physics and spirituality build new bridges between science and reality and it arouses to a transformation in humanity‟s perspective. In this context, Christianity, with its historical and embodied spirituality, express the faith in Jesus Christ good news and get in dialogue with macroshift. The Christian spirituality, while expressing its identity with Jesus Christ good news and with the Kingdom of God mission, seek to promote the fullness of the human community in the inculturation of Gospel, in defense of all forms and expressions of life and re-enchantment in front the mystery of the universe.

It s here proposed in this research a study of the human spirituality as intelligence. The primary purpose was to show that the human being is endowed with a spiritual understanding, that is, he carries within him a divine spark capable of making sense and meaning to his life, and that from this emerges the need for that human being to have a new vision of the world. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first deals with the contextualization of the historical process by which humanity has experienced, thus presenting a story about the paradigm of rationality and the transition to the new paradigm. The second explains how spirituality is understood in the traditional paradigm and the new paradigms, as well as the urgency and importance of spirituality as intelligence, highlighting it s urgency today. The third shows a correlation between concepts and theories presented in previous chapters, utilising Jesus as an example, a person who had the spiritual intelligence as an evident trace in his being.

Abstract: The professional interaction between Mechanical Engineers and Designers is increasingly recommended both in academia in the production process.

Krikellas, Konstantinos. "Case for holistic query evaluation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3940.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we present the holistic query evaluation model. We propose a novel query engine design that exploits the characteristics of modern processors when queries execute inside main memory. The holistic model (a) is based on template-based code generation for each executed query, (b) uses multithreading to adapt to multicore processor architectures and (c) addresses the optimization problem of scheduling multiple threads for intra-query parallelism. Main-memory query execution is a usual operation in modern database servers equipped with tens or hundreds of gigabytes of RAM. In such an execution environment, the query engine needs to adapt to the CPU characteristics to boost performance. For this purpose, holistic query evaluation applies customized code generation to database query evaluation. The idea is to use a collection of highly efficient code templates and dynamically instantiate them to create query- and hardware-specific source code. The source code is compiled and dynamically linked to the database server for processing. Code generation diminishes the bloat of higher-level programming abstractions necessary for implementing generic, interpreted, SQL query engines. At the same time, the generated code is customized for the hardware it will run on. The holistic model supports the most frequently used query processing algorithms, namely sorting, partitioning, join evaluation, and aggregation, thus allowing the efficient evaluation of complex DSS or OLAP queries. Modern CPUs follow multicore designs with multiple threads running in parallel. The dataflow of query engine algorithms needs to be adapted to exploit such designs. We identify memory accesses and thread synchronization as the main bottlenecks in a multicore execution environment. We extend the holistic query evaluation model and propose techniques to mitigate the impact of these bottlenecks on multithreaded query evaluation. We analytically model the expected performance and scalability of the proposed algorithms according to the hardware specifications. The analytical performance expressions can be used by the optimizer to statically estimate the speedup of multithreaded query execution. Finally, we examine the problem of thread scheduling in the context of multithreaded query evaluation on multicore CPUs. The search space for possible operator execution schedules scales fast, thus forbidding the use of exhaustive techniques. We model intra-query parallelism on multicore systems and present scheduling heuristics that result in different degrees of schedule quality and optimization cost. We identify cases where each of our proposed algorithms, or combinations of them, are expected to generate schedules of high quality at an acceptable running cost.

Nicolaou, Daina. "An holistic customer satisfaction model." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2007. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/1155/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis proposes an holistic customer satisfaction model that can be used as a metric for marketing performance evaluation. The hypotheses aim to develop an integrated customer satisfaction model that synthesizes customer satisfaction antecedents and consequences. The rationale behind this thesis and its relevant hypotheses is multi-faceted. Chiefly, customer satisfaction is considered as marketing's sine qua non; often cited, in the first pages of most of the best-selling marketing books, as the ultimate purpose of the marketing function and even as the short definition of marketing. As such, if there is one metric by which marketing performance should be evaluated with, it should be against its scope and how well it fulfils its goal. Customer satisfaction measurement is not an exact science by default mainly because it deals with human beings and their behaviour that is not only difficult to surface but also difficult to measure. This challenge translates into a plethora of customer satisfaction definitions, antecedents and consequences leading to reluctance to employ customer satisfaction formally for such a serious matter such as marketing performance evaluation and control. Thus, the thesis is a synthesis of prominent customer satisfaction models in an effort to integrate them into one, since the evaluation activity does take an holistic perspective whereas partial models pose the risk of losing synergies that may form in the whole. A multi-method approach is employed to arrive at the integrated customer satisfaction model to be used as a marketing performance metric, commencing with a rigorous review of available models in the literature, continuing with in depth interviews with company managers to understand the industry utilised for the research and content analysis of customer-completed questionnaires and also documents of voluntary expressed free-flow voice of customer (availa1?le online where customers rate companies). The latter consists of elaborate questionnaires completed by customers regarding the different elements of the model. Structural Equation Modelling is deployed to build and test the holistic model as it is the only technique that can simultaneously deal with antecedents and consequences. The first (literature review) and second (in-depth interviews with managers and content analysis of customers' reviews and opinions regarding their purchase experience) phases of the research revealed a massive 25-construct model for customer satisfaction with thirteen antecedents (expectations, performance, disconfirmation, service quality, value, dissonance, emotions/affect, equity, regret/rejoice, assimilation/contrast, attribution, recovery and justice) and eleven consequences (stated loyalty, switching, price tolerance, repurchase, share of wallet, trust, complimenting, complaining to the firm, complaining to a third party, positive and negative word of mouth). In order to test the model, in phase three, a survey questionnaire was designed and calibrated to collect data for analysis using LISREL. Thorough and strict CFA and SEM revealed that thirteen (eight antecedents: performance, disconfirmation, service quality, value, dissonance, emotions/affect, equity, regret/rejoice, and four consequences: trust, repurchase and positive and negative word of mouth) constructs constituted the holistic customer satisfaction model empirically verified in the present thesis.

The present work has as its main objective to confront two lexical semantic theories, namely, the decompositionalist Generative Lexicon Theory, by James Pustejovsky, and the atomist Mental Representation Theory, by Jerry Fodor. Our proposal is to present a brief history of lexical semantics in order to bring the reader closer to our subject. We will also present the above-mentioned theories, so we can, in the final chapter, compare them. This comparison will be guided by the Interface Theory, by Jorge Campos da Costa.

Abstract:
Significant research in cultural psychology has underlined differences in Eastern and Western cultures. While differences in many cognitive domains have been examined, there is a gap in cross cultural research on information processing and integration. This research explores the effect of independent or interdependent thinking on how a subject processes information. It is hypothesized that subjects with an interdependent mindset will process information holistically and subjects in an independent context will process information individually, or with an attribute based approach.

A preliminary study tested the averaging and additive effects of information processing and served as the foundation for two subsequent explorations. The first examined cultural differences in information processing through presenting subjects of different cultural backgrounds with presenter and evaluator situations.

In the second study, individualistic and collectivist priming methodology was used to prompt subjects' ability to process information individually or holistically. Established measures of religiosity and connectedness were examined as possible moderators of the relationship between self-construal and information integration. Results show that differences between subjects primed in the interdependent condition were moderated by religiosity. Possible explanations for this effect are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation describes several power optimization techniques for energy efficient datacenters. To achieve this goal, it approaches power dissipation holistically for entire datacenters and analyzes them layer-by-layer from (1) the infrastructure level, (2) the system level, and all the way down to (3) the micro-architecture level. First, for infrastructure-level power optimization of datacenters, this work presents infrastructure-level mathematical models and a holistic warehouse-scale datacenter power and performance simulator, SimWare. Experiments using SimWare show a high loss of cooling efficiency resulting from the non-uniform inlet air temperature distribution across servers. Second, this study describes a system-level technique, ATAC, which maximizes power efficiency while minimizing overheating. Finally, this dissertation describes a micro-architecture level technique under the context of emerging non-volatile memory technologies. We first show that storing more than one bit per cell, or multiple bits per cell, ends up with much higher soft-error rates than conventional technologies. However, multi-bit per cell technology can still be used as approximate storage. To this end, we propose a new class of multi-bit per cell memory in which both a precise bit and an approximate bit are located in a physical cell. With the development of these techniques, the contribution of this body of work is a reduction in the power consumption of datacenters in a holistic way, eliminating one of the most important hurdles to the proliferation of cloud-computing environments.

The thesis begins by explaining, in a first part, the genealogy of a heterodox tradition called “holist monetary approach”, which refuses dichotomic theories and the classical conception of the veil of money. It shows the proximities of these positions with a tradition consisting in thinking money as a “total social fact” involving far more than the three usual economic functions attributed to money. Recent research works conducted in France around Aglietta and Orléan fit in with this tradition. The thesis also leans on theories developed in Keynes’ wake, sharing with the “social fact” approaches a holist methodology. The latter involves a main focus on macroeconomic analysis, which is, in our opinion, the only efficient way to consider money as the first theoretical basis for economics. The thesis shows then, in a second part, that the themes enlightened on the one hand by post-Keynesian macroeconomics (radical uncertainty, endogenous money, etc. ) and on the other hand by new institutionalist monetary theories (legitimacy, trust, sovereignty, money as a social link, etc. ) enable, when considered together, a better understanding of the euro and of the European Central Bank’s monetary policy. Thus, two questions, both equally important but generally not resolved globally by the economists may find an answer: the question of the integration of money into the economic analysis, and the question of how money is then accepted by the economic agents

Abstract:
The present qualitative study aimed to explore the integration of holistic athlete development into sport psychology service delivery. Using the framework of professional philosophy from Poczwardowski, Sherman, and Ravizza (2004), five holistic sport psychology consultants were interviewed about their service delivery. Five athletes were also interviewed about their experiences working with these consultants. Deductive and inductive content analyses (Patton, 2002) were used to examine the data collected. Results offer three perspectives as to the meaning of holistic sport psychology: (a) Managing environmental effects from non-sport domains to the athlete's performance; (b) developing the individual beyond the athlete; and (c) recognizing the dynamic relationship between an athlete's mental, emotional, physiological states, and their behaviour. Themes from the consultants' beliefs, values, theoretical paradigms to behaviour change, models of practice, roles, operating standards, intervention goals, and intervention techniques and methods are also presented and discussed within the context of various service delivery topics.

Morrison, Joe. "The evidence of holism." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.489667.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidential holism, which is closely associated with the works of W.V.O. Quine, maintains that evidence is only applicable to whole theories. It is endorsed in many disparate debates about analyticity, a priority, mathematical Platonism, and meaning. But in discussions about confirmation theory it receives less sympathetic attention: many philosophers of science regard evidential holism as implausible, poorly motivated and of dubious usefulness. Moreover, many of the philosophical applications of evidential holism lead to highly controversial conclusions. In order to determine how plausible holism is, I distinguish three evidentially holistic theses: holism about prediction,. holism about falsification, and holism about confirmation. I argue that Quine only subscribed to holism about prediction and falsification. I identify a strong source of motivation for following Quine: this is the idea that observation is theory-laden. If we accept that observation is theory-laden, then we have very good reasons for accepting holism about prediction and falsification. In addition, the theory-Iadenness of observation provides us with non-arbitrary grounds for restricting the scope of the holistic claims about prediction and falsification. I argue that holism about confirmation is not a consequence of the theory-ladenness of observation, and will only follow if we rely upon an untenable principle of hypothetico-deductivism. This hypothetico-deductive principle is pre-theoretically compelling, so identifying its role in a (flawed) argument for holism about confirmation provides an explanation of why so many commentators have casually assumed that evidential holism is committed to holism about confirmation. Having rejected holism about confirmation and motivated a narrower, less controversial version of evidential holism than that which is usually discussed by philosophers of science, I explore its role in three influential argumentative applications. I show that commitment to evidential holism carries no commitment to holism about meaning, or to the repudiation of a priori justification, or to mathematical Platonism.

Abstract:
The following thesis examines the need for a holistic learning vehicle. Rather than accept the claims made for left and right hemisphere thinking, an examination is made of holism as defined by respected writers. Culled from their works are ideas of undeniable logic and indisputable claim. These are exposed as the basic components of holism that are likely to receive unquestioned acceptance by the most scientific of educators. It is a holistic perception that the world has to be appreciated for the relationships that give it unity. Only then will life take on meaning beyond the superficial, transient, or short term. Decisions can then be made that consider broad ideas rather than any narrow focus detrimental to the large body, be it a small community or the world. If this is to occur, there must exist a learning system that is capable of conveying the unquestionable holistic principles and ideas to children. Possessed of this, every student will have an appreciation for the unity of his/her world. Once this is understood, the individual will be better able to make judgments and decisions that consider broad needs and views. By so doing s/he will enhance the quality of life for him/herself and others. Upon these tenets are hung the attributes of Dr. Charles Brauner's Concept Gathering System. In Chapter III the earlier selected holistic verities are given a one-to-one relationship with the System to show how it incorporates the credible effects of holism. Subsequent chapters provide an in depth look at the Concept Gathering System. It is first described in detail (chapter IV). Then its function in practice is considered (chapter V). In chapter VI the benefits accruing from such holistic learning are outlined. Here the reader is reminded how the original values of holism are successfully met by the Concept Gathering System. Finally the System's application in the school is reviewed with particular attention given to its suitability to the gifted child, and the advantages offered to it by modern technological equipment. Appendix I is an example of the completed System. Appendix II shows how ideas and summaries can be gathered from a book passsage.

Abstract:
Face recognition is a popular research area where there are different approaches studied in the literature. In this thesis, a holistic Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based method, namely Eigenface method is studied in detail and three of the methods based on the Eigenface method are compared. These are the Bayesian PCA where Bayesian classifier is applied after dimension reduction with PCA, the Subspace Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) where LDA is applied after PCA and Eigenface where Nearest Mean Classifier applied after PCA. All the three methods are implemented on the Olivetti Research Laboratory (ORL) face database, the Face Recognition Technology (FERET) database and the CNN-TURK Speakers face database. The results are compared with respect to the effects of changes in illumination, pose and aging. Simulation results show that Subspace LDA and Bayesian PCA perform slightly well with respect to PCA under changes in pose
however, even Subspace LDA and Bayesian PCA do not perform well under changes in illumination and aging although they perform better than PCA.

Zoolfakar, Md Redzuan. "Holistic modelling of LNG carrier systems." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1536.

Abstract:
As the human population increases in parallel with an increase in the standard of living, the world energy demand also continually grows every year. Fossil fuels are the major components contributing to this energy supply. Natural gas, one of the fossil fuels, has shown promising growth due to it price and lower pollutant emissions compared to other fossil fuels. One option for transporting natural gas is the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers. The LNG carrier is one of the most expensive, complex and potentially hazardous cargo carriers that are operating across the world’s oceans due to its cargo, thus proven components are required to build this type of ship. There are seven main components involved in constructing an LNG carrier and they are manufactured by a range of different companies. This situation has created a competitive environment for this industry; however it has also introduced a new challenge to the shipbuilder, engineer and ship-owner in terms of selecting the right components. For a new ship design, there would typically be an incremental change in one or more technology elements from a base design and over time this may result in a less than optimum design. This thesis therefore aims to develop a holistic methodology that can be employed in order to help the ship-owner in particular to select the right combination components for an LNG carrier to rationalise the fleet size, minimise overall costs of construction and operation, and control the total mass of pollutant emission products in preliminary design stage. This methodology is based on the mutual symbiosis between the tools used: namely a comprehensive ship system simulation method, an artificial neural network (ANN) evaluation process and an integrated ANN based multi-objective optimisation process. It is a comprehensive methodology that can be applied to all types of ships, although in this study, it focuses on LNG carriers

Mobile phones and tablets shipments are surpassing those of the PC category, as well as in relation to Internet usage as of 2016; all details which have made mobile adoption a priority for many enterprises and a challenge for them as well. Many enterprises have fallen into a paradox of spending on creating and updating mobile services, and gaining less than expected in return. Reasons for this include the lack of vision, and the lack of a clearly defined, well communicated mobile strategy. Enterprise Architecture ‘EA’ facilitates a successful transformation by controlling and managing the transitions in order to arrive at a clearly defined future state. It is regarded as the science of change to many. However, EA frameworks are very comprehensive and require weeks of training and resources, and are often too generic for mobile transformation. Therefore, an EA-based mobile holistic enterprise framework has been developed to support enterprises in making mobile initiatives a priority. The proposed framework ensures a clearly defined, well-communicated, holistic future state that is continually evaluated, as opposed to many of the existing frameworks. The proposed Mobile Holistic Enterprise Architecture Framework - ‘MHETF’ - is based on the realisation of the capabilities of smartphones that are aimed at individual average consumers (the backbone of the current mobile trend). The capabilities are categorised and translated into four sets of services categories for business use. They are linked to another two components of the framework which are: (i) the categorisation of goals and objectives that are incorporated into the Balanced Scorecard for evaluation at a later stage in planning, and continually referred to during transitions and (ii) the categorisation of the implementation forms (categorisation of end solutions’ functionalities). The framework is supported by EA inter-operability and maturity models to ensure continuity and alignment with the existing initiatives, the enterprise’s strategic objectives, and the change required in the scope of transformation. An evaluation for the available enterprise architecture frameworks was carried out and resulted in the selection of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF). The decision was also commended by the participants in the case study evaluation due to their familiarity with this framework, which is being adopted as the Saudi E Government Standard in contrast to the other major frameworks of Zachman and Federal Enterprise Architecture (FEA). MHETF has been applied to three case studies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; two applications for a leading national outsourcing company, and the third for the outpatient clinics in a large hospital in the capital city of Riyadh. The results have shown major improvements in the four goal areas of mobile transformation; productivity, processes, satisfaction improvement and facilitating new opportunities. Eventually, the final evolution has shown that the participants are satisfied with the framework overall, and indicates that the framework changed their perspective of the power of mobile applications significantly, is relatively easy to understand, and that they are planning to adopt it for future mobile initiatives.

Abstract:
Provoked vulvodynia (PVD) is a disorder characterized by intense vulvar pain, most often reported as raw, burning, or stinging tissue. Current treatment options for PVD are insufficient and narrow in focus, as they predominantly address the physical pain associated with the disorder. Current publications regarding cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness treatment indicate that both therapies are highly effective. Mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapies are noninvasive, efficacious long term, and provide a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach. The aim of this study is to educate nurse practitioners regarding these treatment options, which manage the physical as well as psychosocial aspects of PVD.

Khan, Jehandad. "Holistic Abstraction for Distributed Network Debugging." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/93500.

Full text
Abstract:
Computer networks are engineered for performance and flexibility, delivering billions of packets per second with high reliability, until they fail. It is during such time of crisis that debugging and troubleshooting come to the forefront, however, the focus on performance results in design tradeoffs that make it challenging to troubleshoot them. This dissertation hypothesizes that a view of the network as a single entity solves the above problems, without compromising either performance or visibility. The primary contributions are 1) a topology oblivious network abstraction for performance monitoring and troubleshooting, 2) transformation of the network abstract query to device local semantics, 3) optimizations for reducing state collection overhead, and 4) global state semantics in the proposed query language easing expression of network queries. Abstracting the entire system as an entity simplifies the debugging process, making possible comprehensive root-cause analysis and exonerating the network administrator from dealing with many devices, delivering gains in productivity and efficiency. By merging network topology information with state collection, this thesis provides a new way to look at the network monitoring and troubleshooting problem. Such an amalgamation allows the translation of a performance query expressed in a domain specific language to small pieces of code operating on different devices in the network collecting necessary state. This merging results in lesser overhead per switch and reduces the strain on devices and provides a simple abstraction to the administrator.

Ferguson, Ryan Matthew. "Holistic Theories of Content and Instability." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/48417.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper, I will defend two methodological theses, one negative and one positive, about how to develop a holistic theory of content for mental representations that avoids a problem peculiar to holistic theories, viz., the problem of content instability. The relevant debate between holists and anti-holists has focused on whether this problem provides an in principle barrier to developing a plausible holistic theory. On this front, the holists have won; defenders of holistic theories have convincingly argued that the anti-holists do not have a cogent argument from the problem of content instability to the impossibility of developing a plausible holistic theory. However, beyond this, little has been said about how to develop a holistic theory that avoids the problematic consequences of content instability; all that has been established is that it appears to be, in principle, possible to do so. This paper should contribute to making progress in this area. The two theses I will defend are about how to generate useful constraints on holistic theories so that they avoid content instability. The negative thesis of this paper is that the strategy of generating constraints suggested by the holists' response to anti-holist arguments, viz., appealing to properties of theories' determination functions, is a non-starter. The positive thesis of this paper is that the best way to develop useful stability constraints is to appeal to the explanatory role(s) that representations play in cognitive science theories.
