Hegel, the philosopher most responsible for linking philosophy to history, appropriately argued that in his own day there simply could not be Platonists, Aristotelians, Stoics, or Epicureans, that one could not bring back an earlier stage of thought. In this massive two volume study Vittorio Hösle argues that, in the spirit of Hegel himself, there also cannot be contemporary Hegelians. But there can be “philosophers who attempt to mediate the tradition of objective idealism from Plato to Hegel with post-Hegelian philosophy and with contemporary science”, (p 57n) In the past many of the philosophers who have attempted such a “mediation” have concentrated on one or another aspect of Hegel's project, usually his philosophical anthropology, his social theory or political theory, his critique of modernity, theory of alienation, etc. Hösle ambitiously takes up what looks to be the most unlikely candidate for any “contemporary mediation,” Hegel's entire systematic attempt to link together “Logic”, “Philosophy of Nature” and “Philosophy of Spirit”. Often Hösle's study is simply a survey of Hegel's systematic enterprise, providing paraphrase and plausibility where possible, summarising claims, excusing or pointing out excesses, pausing to debate other commentators, or complain about prominent mis-readings. He introduces his account with a long historical and theoretical discussion of Hegel's Encyclopedia system, and then offers a running commentary on its three major parts, devoting the largest blocks of attention to the Logic and the philosophy of objective spirit in the Rechtsphilosophie. But there is throughout one great thematic problem at issue that sets the tone of the book at the beginning and is returned to again and again.

In French Guiana, inflorescences of Philodendron squamiferum Poepp. (Araceae) were regularly visited by the scarab beetle Cyclocephala simulatrix Hölne and (Scarabaeidae, Coleoptera) occasionally by Cyclocephala tylifera Hölne. The flowering cycle lasted 2 days, and the protogynous inflorescence exhibited features typical of beetle pollination (floral chamber, food rewards, flower heating). The spadix temperature was measured during the entire flowering cycle in French Guiana and at the Montreal Botanical Garden. Both sets of measurements gave a similar temperature pattern. The spadix warmed up twice at the beginning of each evening with no notable heat production between the two peaks. Försöksdjursverksamhet är en viktig del inom läkemedelsutveckling och annan forskning, men svårigheterna i att övervaka djurens hälsa och aktivitet utan att stressa dem gör att en hel del studier får opålitliga resultat. Idag sker mycket av övervakningen antingen manuellt av personal som tittar till djuren, eller med automatiska metoder som innefattar något stressande moment. TrackPaw är ett svenskt startup-företag som vill ändra på detta. De utvecklar en sensorplattform som ska ligga på burens botten och mäta djurens aktivitet utan att störa dem. Detta arbete har som mål att med produktutvecklingsmetoder, materialval, beräkningar och CAD-modellering utveckla ett koncept för ett hölje till TrackPaws plattform med syfte att möjliggöra vidare utveckling av deras produkt. Kund- samt myndighetskrav sammanställdes och översattes till mätbara egenskaper i form av en målspecifikation. Konceptprocessen utfördes genom att en problemformulering utarbetades för att sedan brytas ner till delproblem. Lösningar till dessa delproblem söktes sedan internt och externt. Lösningarna sattes ihop i en konceptkombinationstabell ur vilken genererades ett antal koncept. Kriterier för ett lyckat koncept arbetades fram med problembeskrivningen och kravspecen som utgångspunkt. Valet av koncept gjordes sedan med hjälp av en matris, i vilken koncepten poängsattes mot varandra efter hur väl de levde upp till kriterierna. Det valda konceptet detaljutveklades sedan genom materialval, beräkningar och CAD-modellering. Resultatet blev ett hölje bestående av fyra delar; en toppskiva med en tunnare sektion i mitten som ska leda rörelseinformation till plattformens sensorer, en botten som rymmer plattformens komponenter, en monteringsplatta som separerar komponenterna från ytterväggarna och en packning som tätar konstruktionen. Nästa steg som bör tas är att producera höljet för att utföra ytterligare tester och säkerställa dess funktion. Av resultatet dras slutsatsen att höljet bör fylla sitt syfte och tillåta TrackPaw att gå vidare med utvecklandet av plattformen. Animal testing plays an important part in the development of new medication and in other research, but the dificulties in monitoring the health and activity of the animals without stressing them leads quite a few studies to have unreliable results. Today, a lot of the monitoring is being done manually by personnel looking in on the animals or through automated methods that still induce some stress. TrackPaw is a Swedish start-up who are developing a platform which will change all that by being placed in the bottom of the homing cages and monitoring the animals without causing stress. The goal of this project is to, through product development methods, materials selection, calculations and CAD-modeling, develop a concept for a housing for TrackPaw's sensor platform. The purpose being to allow TrackPaw to continue the development of their product. Client and regulatory requirements were compiled and translated to measurable qualities in the form of goal specifications. The concept development process began by the development of a problem definition which was then broken down into a problem list. Solutions to these problems were sought internally and externally. The solutions were entered into a concept combination table out of which a number of complete concepts were generated. Criteria for a successful concept were created using the goal specifications and problem definition as a starting point. The concept choice was made using a decision matrix where the generated concepts were given points, relative to each other, on how well they met the criteria. The chosen concept was developed in further detail using material choice, calculations and CAD-modeling. The resulting concept is a casing consisting of four parts; a platform with a thinner section in the middle to transfer movement information to the platform's sensors, a bottom which houses the platform's components, a middle platform for mounting components on, separating them from the walls and a gasket to seal the casing. The next step in the development of the platform is to manufacture the casing and perform further testing and evaluation of its function. From the results a conclusion can be drawn that the housing should fill its purpose of allowing TrackPaw to continue the development of their platform.

Urbanisation has historically led to issues with property damage and sickness, due to pests such as rats. Traditionally, rats have been exterminated using poison and manually loaded traps. As of late however, more effective and humane means of control have been developed, such as automatic and connected traps. As rats use the sewer system as we use the highway, connecting properties together, it is natural to place traps there. Nomor, a service company that performs pest control among other services, is interested in developing their own automatic mechanical sewer mounted trap for their own specific needs. In this thesis, the fastening mechanism and enclosure for such a trap are developed, with a concept developed in a previous collaboration used as a base. In this concept, a fastening mechanism is used to fasten the trap to the open pipes located in the sewer manholes. Rats passing underneath the trap are executed by the striking of a carbon dioxide driven cylinder. The enclosure surrounds the fastening mechanism and provides an interface between it and the executional unit, which is developed separately. The final prototype, which was made mostly using 3D-printing of PLA parts and some light metalwork, was tested and evaluated using a testing rig made from layered MDF pieces. The rig was constructed with an optimal scenario in mind, with dimensions like those in pipes which Nomor are likely to want to mount the trap in. The main use of the rig was to evaluate the dimensions and fastening abilities of the trap. Tests and analysis of the construction gave that the fastening mechanism and enclosure had potential to meet the requirements from Nomor in a reliable manner, if a more sophisticated method of mounting and a better mechanism for keeping the trap fastened was developed.

Around the world the implementation of the 5G mobile network is under way. With this latest generation of mobile data transfer comes many advantages compared to the previous generations. One tradeoff however is the reduced range of the transmitting radios due to the higher frequencies of the signal. One way to solve this is to place smaller radios closer to where the user is. This work studies one such radio and since it is cooled by fans and meant to be placed close to where people live and reside it is favorable to be able to reduce the noise transmitted to its surrounding. This work has therefor developed a proof of concept for a noise suppressing casing that accommodates three radios in order to reduce the total A-weighted sound power level that reaches its surrounding. This was done by using ducts with micro-perforated plates (MPPs) as a sound dampening element. To assist in the design process as well as to verify that placing the radios inside the casing did not raise the temperature of the radio’s component beyond acceptable levels a CFD-simulation was performed. The results of the CFD-simulations were also verified using an experiment where the radio’s temperature was recorded during different fan speeds. When measured, the casing lowered the total A-weighted sound power level of three radios by between 11.6 dB(A) and 14.2 dB(A) depending on the fan speed. The result of the thermal experiment show that the temperature was raised by between 2.8 °C and 5.9 °C depending on the fan speed, with higher fan speeds showing less difference when compared to the radio’s standalone performance. The results are deemed to show promise for the future use of casings fitted with Micro-perforated plates being used to reduce the noise transmitted by telecom radios. Runt om i världen pågår implementeringen av 5G-mobilnätet. Med den senaste generationens mobila dataöverföring kommer många nya fördelar jämfört med tidigare generationer. En nackdel är däremot den kortare räckvidden hos signalen på grund av den högre frekvens som sänds ut av radion. Ett sätt att kringgå detta är att placera mindre radior närmare där användaren befinner sig. Detta examensarbete utgår från en sådan radio och eftersom den kyls med fläktar och ska placeras nära där människor bor och vistas är det fördelaktigt att kunna sänka ljudet som når omgivningen. Därför har ett ljudisolerande hölje utvecklats med plats för tre telekomradior med syfte att sänka den totala A-vägda ljudeffektnivån som når dess omgivning. För att åstadkomma detta användes kanaler i kombination med mikroperforerade plåtar (MPPs) tillsammans som ett ljuddämpande element. Som ett verktyg i designprocessen och för att säkerställa att radions komponenter inte blev för varma gjordes en CFD-simulering. Resultatet av simuleringen verifierades även med ett experiment där temperaturen hos radions kylflänsar mättes under olika fläktvarvtal. När den totala A-vägda ljudeffektnivån mättes för höljet tillsammans med tre radior uppstod en sänkning med mellan 11,6 dB(A) och 14,2 dB(A) beroende på aktuellt fläktvarvtal. Resultatet från experimentet visade även att temperaturen på radions kylfläns höjdes med mellan 2,8 och 5,9 °C beroende på fläktvarvtal, med mindre skillnad för högre fläktvarvtal vid jämförelse med radions temperatur vid drift utan hölje. Resultaten anses visa på den goda potentialen av att använda höljen utrustade med mikroperforerade plåtar för att minska överfört ljud från telekomradior.

This essay is concerned with names like Höllenpfad or Geiershöll. The element Höll(e) has nothing to do with Hölle in the sense of ‘underworld’. It derives from the Old High German haldi ‘slope, hill’. In accordance with phonetic laws, haldi develops from heldi > helde > helle into Höll(e). The names of vineyards with Hölle emerge particularly in West Middle German. Terms with Halde trace back to Old High German halda. Such forms occur primarily in the area of Upper German.

Major cavitation damages can seriously endanger the stability of hydraulic structures, in worst case lead to dam failure. To remedy the effect of cavitation on spillway chutes the most common method today is aeration of the flow. Aerators introduce air to the bottom layers of the flow, enough to prevent damages to occur in the concrete lining. The design of an aerator system is of a complex manner due to the many involving parameters such as the channel slope, ramp angle, Froude number, flow velocity. In this report the susceptibility of the Höljes Dam to cavitate has been outlined with the result that this would occur at an extreme and most unlikely situation and remedial measures have been proposed. The design of an aerator system has been proposed as the result from theoretical research. A physical hydraulic model to assess the efficiency of a proposed aerator design is highly recommended. Alternative causes to the damages observed in the spillway chute are discussed.

Models are important tools for understanding the hydrological processes that govern water transport in the landscape and for prediction at times and places where no observations are available. The degree of trust placed on models, however, should not exceed the quality of the data they are fed with. The overall aim of this thesis was to tune the modeling process to account for the uncertainty in the data, by identifying robust parameter values using methods from computational geometry. The methods were developed and tested on data from the Choluteca River basin in Honduras. Quality control of precipitation and discharge data resulted in a rejection of 22% percent of daily raingage data and the complete removal of one out of the seven discharge stations analyzed. The raingage network was not found sufficient to capture the spatial and temporal variability of precipitation in the Choluteca River basin. The temporal variability of discharge was evaluated through a Monte Carlo assessment of the rating-equation parameter values over a moving time window of stage-discharge measurements. Al hydrometric stations showed considerable temporal variability in the stage-discharge relationship, which was largest for low flows, albeit with no common trend. The problem with limited data quality was addressed by identifying robust model parameter values within the set of well-performing (behavioral) parameter-value vectors with computational-geometry methods. The hypothesis that geometrically deep parameter-value vectors within the behavioral set were hydrologically robust was tested, and verified, using two depth functions. Deep parameter-value vectors tended to perform better than shallow ones, were less sensitive to small changes in their values, and were better suited to temporal transfer. Depth functions rank multidimensional data. Methods to visualize the multivariate distribution of behavioral parameters based on the ranked values were developed. It was shown that, by projecting along a common dimension, the multivariate distribution of behavioral parameters for models of varying complexity could be compared using the proposed visualization tools. This has a potential to aid in the selection of an adequate model structure considering the uncertainty in the data. These methods allowed to quantify observational uncertainties. Geometric methods have only recently begun to be used in hydrology. It was shown that they can be used to identify robust parameter values, and some of their potential uses were highlighted. Modeller är viktiga verktyg för att förstå de hydrologiska processer som bestämmer vattnets transport i landskapet och för prognoser för tider och platser där det saknas mätdata. Graden av tillit till modeller bör emellertid inte överstiga kvaliteten på de data som de matas med. Det övergripande syftet med denna avhandling var att anpassa modelleringsprocessen så att den tar hänsyn till osäkerheten i data och identifierar robusta parametervärden med hjälp av metoder från beräkningsgeometrin. Metoderna var utvecklade och testades på data från Cholutecaflodens avrinningsområde i Honduras. Kvalitetskontrollen i nederbörds- och vattenföringsdata resulterade i att 22 % av de dagliga nederbördsobservationerna måste kasseras liksom alla data från en av sju analyserade vattenföringsstationer. Observationsnätet för nederbörd befanns otillräckligt för att fånga upp den rumsliga och tidsmässiga variabiliteten i den övre delen av Cholutecaflodens avrinningsområde. Vattenföringens tidsvariation utvärderades med en Monte Carlo-skattning av värdet på parametrarna i avbördningskurvan i ett rörligt tidsfönster av vattenföringsmätningar. Alla vattenföringsstationer uppvisade stor tidsvariation i avbördningskurvan som var störst för låga flöden, dock inte med någon gemensam trend. Problemet med den måttliga datakvaliteten bedömdes med hjälp av robusta modellparametervärden som identifierades med hjälp av beräkningsgeometriska metoder. Hypotesen att djupa parametervärdesuppsättningar var robusta testades och verifierades genom två djupfunktioner. Geometriskt djupa parametervärdesuppsättningar verkade ge bättre hydrologiska resultat än ytliga, var mindre känsliga för små ändringar i parametervärden och var bättre lämpade för förflyttning i tiden. Metoder utvecklades för att visualisera multivariata fördelningar av välpresterande parametrar baserade på de rangordnade värdena. Genom att projicera längs en gemensam dimension, kunde multivariata fördelningar av välpresterande parametrar hos modeller med varierande komplexitet jämföras med hjälp av det föreslagna visualiseringsverktyget. Det har alltså potentialen att bistå vid valet av en adekvat modellstruktur som tar hänsyn till osäkerheten i data. Dessa metoder möjliggjorde kvantifiering av observationsosäkerheter. Geometriska metoder har helt nyligen börjat användas inom hydrologin. I studien demonstrerades att de kan användas för att identifiera robusta parametervärdesuppsättningar och några av metodernas potentiella användningsområden belystes.

Die Hölle ist aus der Mode gekommen - oder etwa nicht? Als Androhung ewiger Verdammnis bei weltlichem Fehlverhalten kann sie in der säkularisierten Gesellschaft nicht mehr dienen. Zugleich lässt sich eine Veralltäglichung des Begriffs feststellen, die eine Bedeutungsdiffusion anzeigt: Die Hölle scheint nicht mehr für ewig zu sein, und ihre Hitze wie ihr neuer passagenhafter Charakter verweisen eher auf eine Assoziation mit dem Fegefeuer. Das aber wäre noch nicht einmal ein Vorhof zur Hölle. Die Beiträge des Bandes gehen der Frage nach, wie es um das Höllenverständnis in der spätmodernen Gesellschaft bestellt ist - und kommen zu erhellenden Einsichten: vom Krieg bis zum Pflegeheim, von Theresienstadt bis zur Hölle der Gesellschaft.

Wie steht es um die Hölle in spätmodernen Zeiten? Der Beitrag geht dieser nur vermeintlich negativ zu bescheidenden Frage nach, indem er klar macht, dass das der religiösen Semantik entstammende Konzept auch in säkularisierten Zeiten durchaus reale Sachverhalte sozialer Wirklichkeit treffend zu benennen vermag. Die soziologische Reflexion über den Begriff der Hölle richtet sich insofern nicht auf die Frage, ob es die Hölle gibt, sondern darauf, was gemeint ist, wenn von Hölle die Rede ist. Im Zentrum stehen sodann Überlegungen, die um unterschiedliche Spielarten der spätmodernen Rede von der Hölle kreisen und sie auf ihre Gemeinsamkeiten hin untersuchen. Dies mündet in die Einsicht, dass die Hölle heute weitgehend als emotional belastender Modus subjektiven Erlebens beschrieben wird, in dem der Eindruck umfassenden Kontrollverlusts mit dem von Auswegs- oder gar Hoffnungslosigkeit verbunden ist, der in der betreffenden Situation auf unabsehbare (in der Regel aber irgendwie begrenzte) Zeit fortbesteht und der schließlich einen konkreten Raum- und/oder Sozialbezug aufweist.

Der Beitrag endet mit der Schilderung des im 17. Jahrhundert beginnenden Niedergangs der Hölle im europäischen Kulturkreis, der durch die Verlagerung der Strafe für begangene Untaten aus der Hölle in das menschliche Gewissen verursacht wird - ein Prozess, der in soziologischer Perspektive sowohl als Zivilisierung als auch als Individualisierung der Hölle gedeutet wird.

Jahrhundert eine erste, jedoch nachhaltige Abwertung der Hölle als Sanktionskonzept zur Folge hatte, indem mit dem Purgatorium als raum-zeitlich begrenzte Läuterungsphase mit ›Exit-Option‹ eine Alternative zur Ausweglosigkeit und Endgültigkeit ewiger Verdammnis offeriert worden sei. Das Resultat wird als Purgatorisierung der Hölle bezeichnet. In spätmodernen Zeiten sei die Hölle Bestandteil des ›Hier und Jetzt‹ geworden, sie habe sich ihres ursprünglich inhärenten Ewigkeitsanspruchs entledigt und fungiere nun vor allem als Chiffre für eine zeitlich befristete Phase der Unerträglichkeit.

Nina Leonhard widmet sich in diesem Beitrag der im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch regelmäßig anzutreffende Bezeichnung des Krieges als Hölle. Am Beispiel der populärwissenschaftlichen militärhistorischen Zeitschrift «Clausewitz. Magazin für Militärgeschichte» werden Kontexte, Merkmale und Funktionen der Verwendung dieser Kriegsmetapher im Einzelnen analysiert und typologisch eingeordnet. Im Ergebnis tritt vor allem die Ambivalenz organisierter Massengewalt hervor, die mit der semantischen Klassifikation des Kriegs als Hölle verknüpft ist und Schrecken ebenso wie Faszination, Leiden ebenso wie Heldentum in sich vereint.
