Abstract:
Blind adult members (N = 43; 25 female, 18 male) of a cassette tape-sharing group were administered Holland's Self-Directed Search (SDS) either by cassette tape or with the help of a reader. In both cases, an assistant marked the answers on the SDS form and computed the scale scores. Mean scores and standard deviations were calculated for each of the six Holland personality types for both male and female participants. Results showed that the Social (S) type had the highest means for both men and women. A majority of the women obtained S as the first letter of their Holland code. S was also the

The staff at the Kent State Student Advising Center has been using John Holland's self-directed search (SDS) since the inception of the Exploratory program. The SDS measures activities, competencies, and occupational interests as they relate to Holland's six personality types. We tested the utility of the SDS in advising, developed a profile of Exploratory students, and discerned if differentiation impacts major declaration and graduation. Increasing self-awareness, developing competencies, and clarifying values are keys to retaining and graduating undifferentiated, undecided students. By unde

A case in the Hong Kong Chinese context is presented in this paper to illustrate the use of both quantitative (Holland's SDS) and qualitative career assessment (Card Sorts) to help a 16-year-old girl overcome career indecision. Guided by both Holland's Hexagonal Career Types Theory and Socio-Cognitive Career Theory, a career counsellor can promote a client's positive changes after two counseling sessions. This case supports Tracey's (2002) and Nauta et al.'s (2002) postulated bidirectional causal path between self-efficacy and interests. In addition, it highlights that partial match instead of

Summary: The applicability of Holland's and Gati's RIASEC models and translated measures was tested in Iceland. The participants were 449 career counseling clients who responded to the Strong Interest Inventory (SII) and 438 university students who responded to the Self-Directed Search (SDS). The randomization test ( Hubert & Arabie, 1987 ) was used to test Holland's and Gati's RIASEC models separately for men and women. Multidimensional scaling was applied to the RIASEC matrices to evaluate the structure of vocational interests in Iceland. The results indicate that Holland's and Gati's mo

Correlation of the ability measure test scores with the four Self-Directed Search subcomponents revealed that the subtests were not related to corresponding measures of ability in a consistent fashion. CHOICES, the career planning computer program, was evaluated by interviewing 35 grade 11 and 12 students. Using the critical incident technique, reports were elicited of what facilitated or hindered their career planning. These collected incidents were categorized by similarity to provide counsellors and others with a map of exactly what the program does to help or hinder career planning. This map potentially enables counsellors to capitalize on benefits and to minimize possible detriments.
