Abstract:
Elliptical hollow sections (EHS) have been recently added to the family of hollow steel sections available to the construction industry. Their merits include different flexural rigidities about the two principal axes offering efficient bending resistance about the major axis and an aesthetically pleasant appearance. A number of recent practical applications have emerged, which are outlined in this thesis. Previous research on elliptical hollow sections has mainly focused on the cross-section level with a set of design rules for cross-section classification and shear resistance being proposed.

Abstract:
The designer of lattice trusses has been traditionally encouraged to avoid extra joint bending moments by ensuring 'noding' of member centre lines. This can however cause problems in the design of RHS trusses with small (economical) branch members by causing large gaps at joints with undesirable flexibility for slender chord walls. 100% overlap joints overcome this problem while still maintaining economic single cut branch ends. The research programme set out first to highlight the difference in behaviour of trusses with large gap noding and completely overlapping joints. Two similar trusses -

The influence of the member orientation on the strength of joints formed with square hollow sections is examined. The bird beak joint system is a relatively new truss arrangement for square hollow sections, where the chord and the brace have each been rotated by 45° about their own centreline axes. Based on previous experimental testing it has been suggested that this joint system leads to a stronger joint arrangement. Finite element analysis has been used to study the strength and behaviour of such bird beak joints and to compare them to similar joints in CHS and the traditional RHS configura

This paper presents the behaviour and design of axially loaded elliptical steel hollow sections filled with normal and high strength concrete. The experimental investigation was conducted with three nominal wall thickness (4mm, 5mm and 6.3mm) and different infill concrete cube strengths varied from 30 to 100 MPa. The effect of steel tube thickness, concrete strength, and confinement were discussed together with column strengths and load-axial shortening curves were evaluated. The study is limited to cross-section capacity and has not been validated at member level. Comparisons of the tests res

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine the behaviour of elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns under a combination of axial force and bending moment. Most of the research carried out to date involving concrete-filled steel sections has focussed on circular and rectangular tubes, with each shape exhibiting distinct behaviour. The degree of concrete confinement provided by the hollow section wall has been studied under pure compression but remains ambiguous for combined compressive and bending loads, with no current design provision for this loading combination.

This PhD program proposes innovative ideas within a comprehensive and yet umbrella definition as indicated through the title. Above all, this thesis provides a comprehensive compendium of experimental results on a variety of aspects of buckling of thin walled steel elements and an invaluable resource of experimental data for the later studies of such structural elements. This thesis experimentally investigates the structural stability of thin-walled steel members with different geometrical and material specifications. For tubular circular members made exclusively from steel, large imperfectio

The effects of steel tube thickness, the bond strength between the concrete and the steel tube, and the confinement of concrete are examined. Measured column strengths are compared with the values predicted by Eurocode 4, Australian Standards and American Codes. 15 specimens were tested with 30, 60 and 100 N/mm2 concrete strength, with a D/t ratio from 22.9 to 30.5. All the columns were 114 mm in diameter and 300 mm in length. The effect due to concrete shrinkage is
