Abstract:
This chapter surveys some of the intricacies of rhyme and rhyming effects in Shakespeare’s Sonnets. It addresses the sonnet as a musical, rhetorical, and logical text that occurs as a real-time sonic event. It begins with discussion of the tripartite structure and end-rhyme scheme to argue for the architectonic orderliness of the sonnet. Sonnet 18 is analysed in terms of its subtle sound effects before the chapter moves to explore the ways that rhyme and rhyming effects serve as binders to hold together individual quatrains and sonnets, and also to hold multiple sonnets in sequences. Sonnet 87’s peculiar end-rhyme effects are examined in relation to its argument. Throughout the essay attention is given to the effects of early modern pronunciation on rhyme and sound echoes. The pleasure and power of rhyme are explored via its association with memory, sound, time, concord and friendship. The chapter concludes with remarks on the extraordinary structure and rhyming effects of Sonnet 126.

Abstract:
The third chapter focuses on the Johannine Spirit-Paraclete of the Fourth Gospel and First Epistle. In the Johannine confessions, unlike in the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus promises the arrival of the Paraclete who will provide not simply testimony and advocacy of Jesus’ ministry once he has departed but also spiritual comfort and assurance to the brethren. As the agent of spiritual comfort, the Paraclete serves during the post-Reformed period in England to offset the fear and trembling often associated with experimental Puritanism. After a discussion of the ways in which the Johannine conception of the Spirit departs from the Synoptic presentation of the Spirit, the chapter looks closely at the reception of the Spirit-Paraclete in the sermons and Holy Sonnets of John Donne as well as in John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

Abstract:
Shakespeare is usually thought about—too compartmentally—as a dramatist, a sonneteer, and the author of two short long poems. As his career developed, however, he was also called upon to write elegies and epitaphs. This chapter locates and revisits a number of such poems, that hover at the edge of the canon, including the Stanley epitaphs at Tong, the lines on Shakespeare’s gravestone in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford, and ‘The Phoenix and Turtle’. That extraordinary elegy-epitaph is returned to its place in Robert Chester’s Loves Martyr (1601), a volume with a Welsh context that highlights the role of memorial poetry in constituting Shakespeare’s authorial identity not just during his lifetime (as in certain of his sonnets) but posthumously, when elegies celebrating his achievement were published by such writers as Ben Jonson and Leonard Digges.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that the distinctive qualities of John Donne’s religious thought and temperament are revealed as much through the manner or expressive mode of his religious writing as they are through its matter or doctrinal content. To illustrate, the chapter analyses the rhetoric and prosody of Holy Sonnet 19 (‘Oh, to vex me’) in the light of two key contexts: Donne’s letters, poems, and prose works from his middle years (1606–14), and the religious and theological controversies of the same period, including fiercely argued doctrinal debates about the means of salvation and bitter religio-political disputes over the Oath of Allegiance. The chapter concludes by showing the degree to which Donne’s compelling union of dialectical reason and associative poesis in his religious writing both shares in and departs from literary traits and mentalities found in other religious writers of the period.
