Abstract:
Criticism on Donne???s Holy Sonnets has traditionally been concerned with trying to find an explanation for the doubt, anxiety, and despair that is often expressed by the speaker of those poems. In recent decades, critics have increasingly made recourse to Calvinist theology in an effort to explain these melancholy states of mind. The accounts that such critics provide of ???Calvinism,??? however, have been varied and largely inadequate, mainly because they fail to engage with Calvin???s work at the level it requires. My thesis seeks to correct such deficiencies by providing a detailed reading of Calvin???s view on salvation and the way in which it is received. Calvin argues that we obtain salvation through a firm and certain faith, a faith that is nevertheless attacked by the unbelief that still resides in the believer. In other words, there is a division between the flesh and the spirit within the soul of the believer, which means that he or she is never free (until death) from the sinful temptations of this life. This division, which Calvin invokes to reconcile the uncertainties of the Christian life with the assurance of faith, is dramatised in the Holy Sonnets. In the five poems that I analyse, the speaker is torn between a desire for righteousness and an inclination toward evil, a division that is also represented in the structural qualities of the text. The various temptations which the speaker registers and confronts (and often falls to) are, I believe, a demonstration of Calvin???s view that the regenerate person is in continuous warfare against the remnants of the flesh.

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between sonnet form and musical form in Benjamin Britten's sonnet cycles with a view toward identifying the musico-poetic form how the musical form interprets the poetry. Several issues come to the fore: 1) articulation of the large-scale divisions of the poetic form in the music; 2) potential of the musical setting to make connections between lines of the text ; 3) potential of the musical setting to follow or imitate the thought processes of the poem; and 4) placement of the departure and return.

Abstract:
A reexamination of John Donne's Holy Sonnet “Batter my heart,” especially one looking at the sonnet's relationship to Early Modern rhetoric, is long overdue. In this paper, I hope to show that a focus on Donne's relationship to Early Modern rhetoric yields several useful new insights. I argue specifically that Donne was probably exposed to Non-Ramist rhetorical methods and theory at many points in his education, from his childhood to his college years to his years at the Inns of Court. Furthermore, Non-Ramist rhetoric has moral implications, suggesting that aspects of an author's feelings, character, and desires can be analyzed by looking at the writer's rhetorical choices in relation to a specific audience in a specific situation. After discussing Donne's rhetorical education, I will look at how the rhetorical decisions of the poetic speaker in Donne's “Batter my heart” reveal his opinions of God and develop his attitudes toward God over the course of the poem. Indeed, the poetic speaker uses rhetoric that exerts power back on him, causing him to change: whereas at the beginning of the poem the poetic speaker thinks he controls his relationship with God, at the end he sees himself as God's humble subject. Ultimately, the poetic speaker's feelings of utter separation from God at the end of the poem actually yield a sense that he has found God and has gained a sense of awe surrounding the Divine.

The purpose of the present study is to examine how John Donne in his Holy Sonnets responds to the Protestant Reformation and English Calvinism. I suggest that the complaints and anxiety pervaded in the Holy Sonnets are Donne’s counter-reaction to the theological and ritual system of English Calvinism. In the first chapter I contend that there are two streams of interpretation of Donne’s religious poems. The first is the religio-devotional approach, and the second I call the social-conspiratorial approach. The relgio-devotional critics tend to regard Donne as a pious believer and attribute him to one particular theological party. They tend to find out the similarities between the Holy Sonnets and some religious predecessors. The social-conspiratorial critics aptly point out that the Holy Sonnets bear the performative and political characteristics, and explore the cultural effects of Donne’s writing. The present study, based on these two approaches, focuses on the theological aspects of the Holy Sonnets. In the second chapter I take the Book of Psalms as a comparative model and classify Donne’s Holy Sonnets into three categories respectively: laments, thanksgivings, and hymns. A large portion of the Holy Sonnets is laments which include complaints, confessions, and pleas for help, and Hymns and thanksgivings are almost completely lacking. Therer are also some “salvation drama” in which the speaker’s tone indicates that hope of salvation is rather detached. I suggest that the tone of the Holy Sonnets indicates the influence of English Calvinism, and I provide a brief introduction of the English Reformation and some features of English Calvinism in the second half of this chapter. In the third chapter I explore relationship between the Holy Sonnets and the Calvinist doctrine of predestination, so as to explain the speaker’s anxiety to find his “mark” of “election,” so as to reassure his eternal identity. “As due by many titles” will be examined in detail, in order to justify my claims. In the first part of the fourth chapter I attempt to demonstrate how Donne by using “paradoxes” in the Holy Sonnets to subvert the stable and philosophical system of Calvinist theology. In the latter part of this chapter, I turn to investigate the how Donne responds o the tension between the Calvinist obsession of finding “marks” of God’s grace and the Catholic theory that “sacraments” (especially the Eucharist) are the very “marks” of God grace. Finally, in my conclusion I claim that the pervasive anxious atmosphere in the Holy Sonnets indicates Donne’s tear and protestation against English Calvinist systematic theology.

Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to examine Donne’s employments of melancholy in his love poetry, Songs and Sonets, and religious poetry, The Holy Sonnets. I argue that, in terms of the Renaissance medical knowledge of melancholy, the two speakers—the male lover and the sinner—can be regarded as typical melancholy patients. In either the lover’s unhappy love encounter or the sinner’s spiritual crisis, the two speakers’ behaviors and psychological states keep glaring consistency with the symptoms of melancholy according to the current medical discussions. Chapter Two aims at reconstructing the clinical picture of a melancholy patient that Donne and his contemporaries might be familiar with. By doing so, I hope to represent what a melancholy patient might look like at Donne’s time, which Donne is allowed to make use of in his poetic writings. To achieve this, first I explore the significant notions concerning melancholy in the ancient and Renaissance medical tradition. Then, I pay particular attention to the symptoms most melancholy patients are found to demonstrate in the heart and in the brain. Based on the clinical picture, I contend in Chapters Three and Four that Donne draws greatly on melancholy in depicting the lover’s “love melancholy” in Songs and Sonets and the sinner’s “religious melancholy” in The Holy Sonnets. Love melancholy and religious melancholy, two remarkable species of melancholy, partake of the remarkable symptoms of melancholy, and in the Renaissance, some scholarly treatises, notably Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy and Timothy Bright’s A Treatise of Melancholy, are devoted to exploring the two types of melancholy. I juxtapose Donne’s poetry with these scholarly analyses in order to highlight the fact that in both his love poetry and religious poetry, Donne portrays the lover and the sinner as two speakers rich in expression of the characteristics and symptoms of melancholy. Through exploring Donne’s artistic treatments of melancholy in Songs and Sonets and The Holy Sonnets, I expect to make contribution to the field of Donne’s study in two aspects. On the one hand, while dealing with Donne’s love poetry and religious poetry, most critics tend to interpret them separately. By relating them to each other in terms of melancholy, I hope to find out a common perspective to reading the two apparently irrelevant poetic texts. On the other hand, melancholy, as a prevalent disease and a vogue topic at Donne’s time, is assumed to exert its effects on the poet’s creation. In this sense, melancholy matters not only to the medical scholars in the Renaissance. With artistic refinements, poets such as Donne himself can be expected to make a more graphic and more humanistic presentation of this malady. In this thesis, paralleling Donne’s poetry with medical ideas of melancholy, I am going to accentuate the literary success Donne achieves in creating two appropriate images of melancholy speakers to match the unsatisfactory human experiences Donne intends to talk about.
