Morgan-Wynne, John Eifion. "The Holy Spirit and religious experience in Christian literature c.90-200 AD." Thesis, Durham University, 1987. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6616/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores whether religious experience and the Spirit are linked in Christian literature between c90 and 200. Three spheres of religious experience were chosen as illustrations - a sense of being personally encountered/overwhelmed by the divine; of divine illumination/guidance; and of being divinely empowered for ethical conduct. The Introduction reviews previous research: since Weinel. There has not been a comprehensive survey covering both the New Testament and early Patristic evidence, in what is the transition period between the subapostolic church and the emergence of the Catholic Church by the early third century. A brief survey of the evidence before c90 sets the background for the study. Thereafter, the thesis is divided into a further seven parts, surveying the literature on a geographical basis, viz Syria, Asia Minor, Greece, Rome, Southern Gaul, Northern Africa and Egypt. The final part draws together the conclusions of the study. Whether the Spirit was at different moments a part of Christian distinctiveness over against the world, Judaism and internal opponents, whether deemed "heretical" or not, is explored. The evidence for a continuing sense of being overwhelmed by an encounter with the Holy Spirit is patchy, and no uniform type of experience necessarily emerges within any given geographical area. Throughout the period Christians were confronted by the need to test claims to inspiration by the Spirit. None of the various tests proposed really centred on the actual experience itself but all were external ones. Claims to possess the truth took various forms, and again there was no necesary uniformity with any given area. Generally, the ethical demand and the Spirit's help was less held together than was characteristic of Paul. Some writers may mention both aspects but these were not expressed in an integrated way; others came close to moralism. The variegated picture which emerges probably faithfully reflects second century Christianity.

Lee, Justin Joon. "Origen and the Holy Spirit." Thesis, Durham University, 2018. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12804/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an examination of the pneumatology of Origen of Alexandria. By providing insight into his understanding of the Holy Spirit, it also seeks to reframe the way in which Origen’s Trinitarian theology is understood. In this study, I argue that Origen conceives of the Holy Spirit as a divine person, but inferior in nature. Origen’s pneumatology must be considered in light of his understanding of the Son and Father, as well as the influence of Middle Platonism on his theological and cosmological framework. Origen’s concept of Trinity is a hierarchy of divine persons in which the greater ministers to the existence of the lower. Though Origen recognizes the personhood of the Holy Spirit, he believes that the Spirit is less than the other divine persons, both in person and in work. The Spirit’s origin and attributes, for which Origen has no real scriptural or traditional precedent, he struggles to articulate and often leaves unresolved. I suggest that Origen’s pneumatology can be best understood by examining where he is most clear and consistent: the work of the Holy Spirit. Origen consistently portrays the Spirit as participating in the divine work of salvation; his Trintarianism is strongly economic, emphasizing shared work and will. The Spirit’s specific role in the economy is to indwell and assist the saints, in line with his lesser status. There are two ways in which the Holy Spirit’s activity can be framed: (1) in the Trinitarian and downward action of God, in which the Spirit is the direct distributor of the divine gifts and graces and (2) the Spirit’s upward work of revelation and sanctification, by which he leads the saints to the Son and Father. The Spirit thus serves as the practical and personal initiator of believers into the greater processes of salvation and deification.

Jones, Simon Matthew. "Womb of the Spirit : the liturgical implications of the doctrine of the Spirit for the Syrian baptismal tradition." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1999. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/245102.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the role of the Holy Spirit within the Syrian baptismal tradition and, in particular, assesses its effect upon the liturgical and theological development of initiation in East and West Syria. Primary material includes the Odes of Solomon, Didascalia Apostolorum and Acts of Judas Thomas; the writings of Aphrahat, Ephrem, Narsai, Jacob of Serugh, Philoxenus and Severus of Antioch; as well as the East Syrian and two West Syrian baptismal ordines. This study provides evidence against any notion of an original Syrian baptismal pattern in which a single anointing precedes immersion, and demonstrates that the tradition witnesses to the existence of a variety of practices at an early stage. At the same time, it argues that the Syrian rite was not originally modelled upon the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan, nor did its theology undergo an identifiable shift from Johannine to Pauline imagery. Against this background, the incarnational image of the font as womb is identified as the principal characteristic which runs througout the development of the tradition, functioning as the primary symbolic focus for the activity of the Holy Spirit and thereby interpreting the pre-immersion anointing(s) as a ritual preparation for baptismal regeneration by water and the Spirit. The Spirit is seen as active throughout the process of initiation. It is the Spirit who identifies the candidate as belonging to Christ; it is the Spirit who prepares and brings to new birth with Christ in the womb of the Jordan; and, not least, it is the Spirit whom the candidate receives as the eschatological pledge of the final birth with the First-born, from death to eternal life.

Abstract:
The theology of the Holy Spirit in Victor Codina, woven in the row of the Christological complementation and the post-Conciliar eclesiology, relates the Holy Spirit and the Church in historic perspective in the process saving joining criticism of Jesus to the Church. The author listens and reflects theologically from existential reality Latin American pastoral consequences, and designs against the silence of modern theology. The object of this theological reflection is treated as light that allows contemplate sociocultural reality objectively, cosmic and ecclesial theological. Theological and historical elements are essential on the horizon of the array codiniana pneumatology theological liberating, whose fertility gives rise to new spiritual experience, born of shared solidarity with the crucified of history, who live in the shadows of death in expansion. The poor, discovered as a theological place special prophetic character, give his pneumatology. Divine grace reveals the mysteries of God to the poor, making them carriers of human values, cultural and religious, alternative modernity. The spirit manifests itself where there is Fellowship, justice, compassion and solidarity. The spiritual salvation necessarily passes by historic liberation. Emerging Perspectives on cultural horizon and symbolic reason, revealing something of the ineffable Mystery. A mysterious thread weaves the historic plot, leading it to the eschatological horizon. Insufficient pneumatology posts the Church to the past and the legal-sacramental ecclesial model, exhausted. The absolute confidence of the poor in God is the ultimate reason of liberating theological debate. Being a Christian, more than follow a doctrine, is allowed to reach by the dynamism of the spirit, passing from ethics to mystique of following Jesus Christ.

Lee, Hee Youl. "A dynamic reading of the Holy Spirit in Revelation : a theological reflection on the functional role of the Holy Spirit in the narrative." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1983/8745fdef-24dc-47d3-9820-b84b9c02208f.

Abstract:
Thematically, this study focuses on the Holy Spirit. Methodologically it employs the literary approach. More specifically, it is called a `dynamic biblical narrative approach'. In view of this approach, I read the text of Revelation as `a final and unified form of ancient and canonical narrative' in which the Holy Spirit is rhetorically presented as a `divine character' and a `divine frame of reference'. The dynamic interaction among the implied author or the narrator, the text and the implied reader has been considered. It presupposes that the Book of Revelation is not only an apocalyptic and prophetic letter, but also a narrative since apocalyptic literature usually has a story. The narrative approach presupposes that the implied author and the implied audience can be traced from the narrative. This study attempts to prove how the Holy Spirit affects the narrative of Revelation through the narrator. The literary theories of the narrator and the divine frame of reference applied in this study illuminate that the Holy Spirit plays a significant role in the whole narrative by generating the viewpoint of the narrator as a divine frame of reference. This study also proves that the direct character-presentation theory presents the Divine Spirit as the Holy, Divine, Complete (or perfect), Life-giving and Prophetic Spirit of God and Jesus. The theory of characterization along the indirect character-presentation shows that the Divine Spirit is an enigmatic character with both person-likeness and person-unlikeness. This study has examined the characterization of the Holy Spirit along the plot as well as the structure of Revelation. The Holy Spirit is characterized to be multi-functional: God-like; Angel-like; Person-like. Above all, a new definition in the plot of Revelation is proposed in this study: a six fold and four level scheme plot. A new definition of the five types of the structure of Revelation is also proposed: narrative-syntactic structure; fundamental-syntactic structure; narrative-semantic structure; fundamental-semantic structure; pragmatic structure. With a dynamic reading of the Holy Spirit, the readers may understand who the Holy Spirit is and what functions of the Holy Spirit are in Revelation more concretely than before. This study hopes to become a stepping stone for future studies in the Book of Revelation
