e19006 Background: There are convincing data that suggest that lifestyle factors play a strong role in colorectal cancer. Obesity in particular is associated with higher incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) and increased mortality. Racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to develop colorectal cancer when compared to the general population in the US, and the population in Richmond is made up of 47% of African Americans (AA), with 24% of the total persons in poverty and a median household income of $45,117, allowing us to uncover important factors that may affect the development of CRC. In America today, many people have fallen into sub-standard housing situations. Domestic violence, drug abuse, and lack of educational and employment opportunities are a few of the myriad reasons for this. On average the number of homeless people in the greater Richmond area is 5,200 individuals.1 These are people specifically in need of a re-integration into society. This thesis examines the role that the built environment can play in this process, by providing a sustainable, affordable and flexible site for a program that encourages people to rise above their current state by "recycling"
