Increasing the number of tourists to Harapan Island in the Kepulauan Seribu triggers an increase in the number of homestays. But there are still many homestays that do not meet operational standards. The purpose of empowerment is to increase the capability of homestay owners in meeting business standards. The analytical method used is a method of self reflection. The participants are guided by the facilitators for self-reflection on the homestay and its management. Most homestays have two rooms. Most homestays are separate from where the owner lives, only a few offer homestays with the owner. Most homestays do not have signage, do not provide kitchen facilities for guests, and have no complaint records. The majority of homestay owners have not yet attended homestay and ‘sapta pesona’ training. The interaction between homestay owners and guests is relatively low because most guests book rooms through travel agents. Therefore, most homestay owners do not record guest identity. Most homestay owners also do not have a special room for administrative activities, and do not do regular guest and financial administration activities. The capabilities of homestay owners in meeting business standards vary so that empowerment activities are strongly recommended.

Objectives: The rapid development of the global tourism industry has brought about a boom in the development of the homestay industry, and the development of homestays in China is no exception. With the advent of the era of large accommodation, the country smoke-free homestay industry can not only meet people's basic needs for travel and accommodation, but also a place to experience culture and social consumption, which is an increasing need for people's better life. From the perspective of the business model of homestays, the new types of homestays that incorporate the upstream and downstream industrial chain of homestays are more in line with future development trends. In order to solve the problems of "weak", "scattered" and "small" in the form of the country homestay industry chain, and to continuously optimize the coordinated development of the country homestay industry chain, it is very necessary to adopt the following paths and measures: The first is to strengthen the coordination and integration of country homestay with other industrial chains; the second is to strengthen the agglomeration of the homestay industry and create a branded management road for country homestay; the third is to strengthen government guidance, coordinate the distribution of benefits, and create beautiful country homestay; the fourth is to increase policy support Make efforts to promote the flow of homestay talents and achieve high-quality development of the homestay industry.

In contemporary world, travellers are more inclined towards seeking peace and tranquility from vacation destination rather than mere travel. Travelllers indulge in travel experience that enables them to connect with locals, gets genuine insight into their culture and traditional lifestyles. Rural homestays are one such means to cater the needs of such tourists in all-inclusive. The purpose of the study is to evaluate variation between the factors affecting satisfaction and expectation of the homestay’s guests. The study is conducted in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, India. The data is collected by close ended questionnaire method, in face-to-face interaction with 200 tourists staying in 20 rural homestays. The study is intended to evaluate various attributes of the rural homestay accommodation that leads to satisfaction/dissatisfaction among guests staying in the homestay and also to make homestay owners understand the needs and requirements of guests to improve upon the service provided. The study also analyses the relationship between guests’ socio-economic profile and their satisfaction. The result of the research supports the suggestions for the homestay owners and public administrators that further boost the level of satisfaction of the guests and contributes in extensive rural as well as cultural tourism development.

Increasing tourism businesses, especially homestays, is a tourist need while in tourist destinations, so that services and comfort are needed during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study identified several homestay problems including: the requirements to become a homestay, how to develop a homestay (CHSE standard), homestay administration and digital use with social media. The purpose of this study is to increase public understanding of homestay SOPs, online check-in/out administration of tourists while staying at homestays and promotions through Instagram. The method used is counseling, discussion and short practice. Research Results Good resource management in homestay management, effective administration through google forms, and effective ways of promotion during the pandemic through Instagram will support the homestay business in Purwosari village to increase and be able to survive during the covid-19 pandemic.

This study aims to clarify regulations used among each type of registered and unregistered Malaysian homestays and to reveal issues arose regarding the implemented regulations. Selected homestays that are established by the government organizations and individuals were investigated to carry out the comparison on each homestay. Host families and persons in charge of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (MRRD) were also interviewed. Findings showed that there is only one guideline used for all types of homestays in Malaysia, which is the Malaysia Homestay Registration Guideline, established by MOTAC. MOTAC has also been selected as a leader of homestays in the Southeast Asian countries by the ASEAN Secretariat; therefore, the ASEAN Homestay Standard is also being referred. However, the implementation of this guideline and standard among other homestays unregistered with MOTAC (homestays established by MOA, MRRD, and individuals) is not compulsory, although encouraged, where they may receive equal benefits in term of facilities and promotion. Some issues arose due to the tax regulated by the local authorities, failure on homestays to be registered with MOTAC, and abandoned homestays. This study recommended that the Malaysia Homestay Registration Guideline to be standardized and regulated to all types of homestays, including individuals and unregistered homestays in Malaysia. This is important in order to reduce issues arose involving the homestay industry, providing safety and comfort to the tourists and, to help to develop rural income among host families and the rural community themselves.Keywords: Rural tourism, homestay, regulation, management, operation

The development of the tourism sector can encourage the income of the surrounding community due to the presence of attractions, as well as Homestay is a very lucrative destination for foreign exchange. Homestay development must be supported by good facilities and infrastructure for each area, so that guests who come and stay feel happy. In Toba Samosir Regency there are still many who do not understand the homestay and the guesthouse, where there are still many homestays that do not have the standard homestays that should be. Through this research the writer will conduct an analysis by conducting research and direct interviews with several workers, visitors, and homestay businesses in Toba Samosir Regency. Where this research uses descriptive methods, the results of this study are that the development of homestays can increase the level of visits, where the homestay here as one of the facilities that is more flexible and affordable.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the potential of “homestays” and also observe the trends related to this emerging concept in India. This paper also discusses various challenges faced by the owners of homestays. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on an exploratory study that sought to collect factual data about the present scenario and the emerging trends related to homestays. A qualitative case study method was used to analyse the actual practices followed by stakeholders. This paper expresses the viewpoint of the authors on the augmented demand for homestay supported by secondary data published in several academic papers and reports published by various government departments. The author interviewed a number of homestay owners to obtain a first-hand perspective. Findings This paper brings to light the rising trend toward homestays, the benefits of homestay tourism from the perspective of homestay stakeholders (both tourists and owners) and the impact on economic, social and cultural life, as a result of growth in the homestay concept. Originality/value The current level of discussion about homestays is limited, as there are relatively few prior studies reported in the literature.

This systematic literature review is designed to evaluate the current state of knowledge in rural homestays and tourism academic literature. With reference to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart, we reviewed 94 studies published in the selected journals from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2020. Our review explores how sustainable rural homestays have been previously researched in terms of the context, topic, sample, method, geographical location, and theoretical framework. The review provides insights on sustainability and rural homestay tourism from the perspective of co-occurrence beside highlighting the valuable content addressed by authors and suggesting future research directions. In a sustainable rural tourism context, only 51% of the reviewed studies had considered homestay as the core and independent area of inquiry. This review notes an increasing number of researchers from developing countries are working on community-based rural homestays, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Unfortunately, important topics—like homestay branding, homestay and entrepreneurship, homestays and information and communication technology (ICT) competency, homestay operator’s training and development about sustainability—are rarely addressed in the existing literature.

Given the high importance of the performance of rural homestays to the local economy, this study aims to fill the gap in homestay performance research and make rural homestays more competitive and sustainable after the coronavirus disease epidemic (COVID-19). Integrating a consistent linguistic fuzzy preference relations-based analytic network process (CLFPR-based ANP) and a fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), this study constructs a comprehensive evaluation model of the performance of rural homestays and empirically analyzes homestay performance in Zhejiang. The results show the following: (1) Among the criteria’s weights by CLFPR-based ANP, homestay operation and management, service quality, and homestay geist and community co-prosperity should be given much more attention; the importance of factors regarding the environment and building of rural homestays is gradually weakening. (2) In light of ranking alternatives based on performance evaluation by fuzzy TOPSIS, the homestay with the optimal performance has been found, which practitioners can use as a benchmark. Therefore, the priorities of these criteria further deepen the understanding of the performance of rural homestays and underline the development direction for practitioners. Simultaneously, in terms of feasibility and reliability, the integrated approach comprises a beneficial attempt and becomes an effective evaluation tool for practitioners to improve effectiveness.

Purpose Rural homestays have emerged as an interesting option for tourists. This study aims to assess the role of destination attractiveness factors and travel motivations in homestay choice. The moderating role of need for uniqueness towards enhancing these relationships is also examined. Design/methodology/approach A survey of 201 Indian tourists who had visited rural homestays in the Uttarakhand state of India was conducted. Data were analyzed using SPSS and WarpPLS, based on structural equation modelling approach. Findings Results indicate that two destination attractiveness factors – (a) cultural and rural attractions and (b) destination location and transportation – have a significant association with rural homestay choice. Further, need for uniqueness enhances the relationship between natural attractions and choosing rural homestays. Originality/value Although there are several studies on rural homestays, there is scant research on the factors influencing the choice of rural homestays from a tourists’ perspective. Besides, studies on rural homestay tourism have not assessed the role of need for uniqueness in influencing such choices. The implications of the study for destination marketers, homestay operators and owners are discussed which would hopefully aid in attracting discerning tourists to the rural homestays to such regions.

This paper aims to: 1) Analyze management homestay. 2) Analyzing the patterns of actors in managing homestays. This research was descriptive with a qualitative approach. Data was obtained by conducting interviews, observations and literature studies. Data analyzed was carried out using qualitative analysis with a descriptive approach that outlined data and facts obtained at the study site.
The results of the study show the actors involved in management homestay are the owners homestay, Regional Government of South Solok Regency, Association of Sales of Indonesian Travel (ASATI) of West Sumatra, Kelompok Sadar Wisata (Pokdarwis) Saribu Rumah Gadang and Karang Taruna Tunas Harapan. Owners homestay play a role as managers of. The regional government of South Solok Regency and ASATI as a pioneer and assistance in developed the rumah gadang being a homestay. The actors who had the most role in managing homestays are Owners homestay, local governments and the least involved is Pokdarwis.

Homestay is being developed throughout the decades making it as one of the best tourism product in Malaysia. The increasing number of homestay in Sarawak each year is challenging the communication among each other administratively. Communication among all the homestay is vital in order for the information could be reached in a timely manner. Without a proper communication media used to communicate, a lot of important information could be missed out causing some of the homestays to be left out. This research is conducted to study the communication used among the homestay operators using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Interviews are conducted with the representatives of Sarawak Homestay Operator Association (SHOA) and questionnaires are distributed to the homestay operators in gathering the information. Locations could not be changed as locations are the unique selling point of a homestay and recommendations can be addressed to have mobile communication towers within the vicinity of the homestays to improve the signals. It is revealed that communication issues could be resolved if operators are actively involved as there are a variety of apps available in the market for these operators to choose from.

Homestay industry in Taiwan is not only thriving, but also its operation is moving gradually toward elaboration strategy and in a specialized-operation manner these years. Nevertheless, the evaluation frameworks of the earlier studies were sporadically constructed from an overall perspective of homestays. Moreover, the functions, operational model, and natures of homestays are dissimilar to those of hotels; therefore, if the evaluation criteria of homestays employ the ones of hotels, it would appear to be incoherent and incompatible. This study has accordingly developed and constructed a set of evaluation indicators tailor-made for homestay sector through discussion of literatures and interviewing experts so that the evaluation framework would be more comprehensive and more practical. In the process of interviewing experts, it was discovered that dependences lay on the aspects and criteria. Consequently, this research chose the ANP (analytic network process) to get the weights and, further, to acquire the homestay business performance through fuzzy theory. The result reveals, as regards key aspects, homestay proprietors and customer groups both weight the surroundings of the building and features, service quality, operation, and management most. In respect to overall homestay performance, customer groups consider it has reached the satisfactory level.

We devised and assessed open recruitment of host families for medical student homestays in a rural area of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, so that program organizers would not have to depend on professional and personal connections. The duration of the homestays was one night and two days, and they were conducted in August 2016, 2017, and 2018. The purpose of this community-based medical education program was to promote interactions between medical students and residents of Tamba area. The study asked one family member from each host family to complete a questionnaire after the homestay, and their experiences were evaluated in the study. The questionnaire results were analyzed using a visual analog scale (VAS; 0–100 mm). Thirty-three host families participated in the homestay program over three years. Results showed that VAS scores were high for enjoyment of homestays (VAS; 92.4 ± 13.0), continuation of the homestay program (91.7 ± 12.7), continuation of participation in the homestay program (89.2 ± 16.2), and desire for the homestay students to work in the area in the future (95.4 ± 6.3). The recruitment of host families through advertising was an efficient method for this community-based medical education homestay program. The results indicate that it is possible to attract more host families through open recruitment, which will contribute to the sustainability of the homestay program. Further research, including a follow-up of the students who participated and whether they chose a rural area or Tamba to practice is needed in the future. Since this is an ongoing program, further research in a similar format can be conducted in the future.

As a rural tourism product, homestays play an essential role in sustainability. The operation of homestay business is directly linked to the success or failure of community-based tourism development. By taking rural homestay business in Zhejiang as a research object, the paper aims to clarify the interrelationships among influencing factors in the operation of rural homestay business from a performance perspective. Based on multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques, this paper not only constructed the evaluation system of homestay business in the Chinese context by the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM), but also disclosed the interrelationships of criteria and aspects by a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and the DEMATEL-based analytical network process (DANP). Results show that: (1) 5 aspects and 31 criteria comprise the evaluation system of homestay business, (2) the aspects and criteria with high global weight are nearly clustered into the effect group, (3) the weight of service quality and homestay geist and community co-prosperity as the rank top two, (4) more than these, hardware facilities construct the product features of homestays because of the role of driving elements, (5) owing to the core elements, criteria about operational efficiency become guiding principles of homestay business, and (6) service quality and integrated utilization of socio-cultural resources underpin the sustainable development of homestay business in the long run. Therefore, the interrelationships of aspects and criteria provide further insights and underline the focus on homestay business for practitioners. At the same time, these serve as an effective administration tool for industry administrations. These will lay a solid foundation to enhance the level of homestay business and boost the sustainable development of community-based tourism.

Sanur as one of the tourist destinations cer-tainly has many choices of lodging places such as homestays, competition between homestays in attracting interested local and foreign guests is getting tighter. The bedroom and bathroom are the most important part of a homestay. In de-signing space in the bedroom and bathroom of Yulia 1 Homestay Sanur uses the Scandinavian Concept in the hope of giving a different identity than other homestays without reducing comfort. The Scandinavian concept has a neutral color and simple character in the selection of furniture.

The experiences of 19 Japanese high school students in a homestay program are described. They were interviewed three times during their academic year in Canada; 13 of the students were interviewed again in Japan four months later. Although students made gains in English proficiency, several expressed dissatisfaction with the organization of the homestays. They were distressed by the lack of information provided prior to departure and the inaccurate representation of their homestay environments. Students complained about lack of access to counselling promised. Despite significant agency fees, no tuition was paid to schools, no stipend was paid to homestay families, and the students felt that little program money was spent monitoring their progress. Although the problems associated with this particular program may be isolated, there should be no tolerance for homestays that do not safeguard the students' interests. The authors make suggestions for stricter regulations regarding agencies offering homestay experiences.

This study aims to compare the implementation of rural tourism in Malaysia and Indonesia, to reveal the usage of traditional Malay house and Rumah Gadang as homestays in both countries, and to promote homestay as an alternative for rural tourism accommodation. Experiences on participating in both homestays in Kampung Lonek Homestay, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia and Nagari Sumpur, West Sumatra, both majorly populated by the Minang community, are shared and analyzed to achieve these aims.

Tourism development in Ubud raises new paradigm that encourages city hotel and hostel investment in the area. Ubud, which was once secluded for the development of mass accommodation facilities, now has begun building various brands managed by hotel chains that threaten the existence of homestay owned by residents. The dilemma is not only these homestays must survive with market change, but they also must compete with the “giants” like Evitel (Asiawood Hospitality Management) and MaxOne (Milestone Pacific Hotel Group) offering relatively similar price. Looking into this phenomenon, the study conducted a survey to 163 homestays in Ubud to see what this local homestay has to support their existence: competing for the "giants" of the hospitality industry. Results of the survey were then being elaborated through an in-depth interview to selected homestay owners and administrator. Literature studies were also being conducted, ensuring five main factors that contribute to homestay competitiveness in Ubud, namely experience, digitalisation, innovation, market and location.

The problems faced by partners are the low awareness of the community about interpreting the concept of tourism about local wisdom as an effort to develop cultural heritage, the lack of good understanding and ability in the community about homestay governance management related to marketing, finance, national standard services in the tourism sector, and not yet organized. neat administration of homestay management and the absence of regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for managing homestays in Lumban Suhi Suhi Toruan Village. The method implemented in strengthening the community's understanding and ability about homestays is counseling and socialization about tourism villages based on local wisdom and tourism products (homestays); as well as training and mentoring on service management, marketing and promotion. A professional management for the homestay can be the opportunity for local people to make the tourist stay longer and enjoy the natural view as well as the culture in tourism village. The aim of this research is to determine the perceptions of homestay and its management at Wukirsari Tourism Village. The benefit of this research is to provide more references regarding to tourism studies, especially on homestay management. The methods used in this study are observation, interview, and documentation. The result reveals that homestay’s owners at Wukirsari Tourism Village know the concept of homestay, but they lack of knowledge on the management. Harapan Island is one of the islands in Kecamatan Kepulauan Seribu Utara which is visited by many tourists. This condition encourages local residents to commercialize their residences as homestays. Homestay required to meet the standards. However, there are still many homestay owners who do not understand about business standards and do not have a certificate, therefore training is needed on homestay standards for owners. The purpose of the training is to increase knowledge about the standards of the homestay business and improve the attitude of the owner. The training was attended by 23% of homestay owners. Training materials include homestay products, services and management. Material refers to regulations regarding the standard of homestay business. The training method used is reading, material presentation, self-evaluation and discussion. The standard that has not been fulfilled is the provision of a kitchen for guests, guest identity recording, availability of price lists and development of human resources. The results of the training evaluation indicate an increase in knowledge and acceptance of homestay owners. Training evaluation showed that there was an increase in knowledge and changes in the attitude of the trainees. Training is still needed to improve the knowledge and improvement of the attitude of homestay owners.

Yeh Gangga Beach is one of the tourist destinations in Tabanan, which has many attractions at affordable prices. Accommodation in this destination is unique with the traditional design and a lot of environmental activities. The main problems in this accommodation (homestay) are marketing and operation. Many tourists seem unfamiliar with the accommodation, which results in limited market reach. In addition, unstandardized operations have made the performance low and unable to provide maximum tourist satisfaction. This study aims to determine the right strategy for developing homestays and destinations with a local community-based strategy based on tourist characteristics, motivations, and analyzed results. This study used qualitative data collection such as interviews (homestay owners and village officials), observation, questionnaires, and documentation study. By knowing the internal factor (Strength, Weaknesses) and external factors (Opportunity and Threat) of the homestays will be found the strategy to improve the standard of the homestay in Yeh Gangga Beach. Based on observation, questionnaires and interviews with stakeholder and the SWOT analysis indicated as follows: 1). Homestays at Yeh Gangga beach need promotion, this can be done with doing a collaboration with travel bureau who works for a tour package and digital marketing via social media. 2). To obtain a legal license in building homestay, this needs the government involved. 3) In order to meet good administrative or improve management standard requires training or workshop from organizations that are experts in homestay or accommodation administration. 4) Focus Group Discussion (FGD) of homestays owners, village officials, and academics to improve homestays and destination standards. 5) To form a tourism awareness group (POKDARWIS) that will be more responsible for the sustainability of all tourism activities, including homestays as a component of tourism in Yeh Gangga and also beach cleanliness. 6) Create new products with better quality and competitive prices such as special souvenirs to show the characteristic of Yeh Gangga Beach. 7) Community synergy to tackle the waste problem.

It is based on qualitative fieldwork inthree homestay villages in Northern Thailand. The research combines the studies of vernacular tradition,tourism and ‘home’ in order to explain the changes in homestays by analyzing the interrelationships betweenspace use, social interaction and the meaning of home and homestay. The findings reveal that the normsconcerning guest space, patterns of life and the perceived meaning of home in the Northern Thai context playsignificant roles in adjusting the lives and outlooks of residents, as well as their space, to homestays. While thishas positive implications in terms of re-using space to supplement the family income, homestays also bringabout profound shifts in the moral values and meanings of home. Therefore, this study aims to analyze homestay businesses in the Kembang Kuning Tourism Village seen from 3 (three main components of this business program, namely institutions, actors and products. The research method used in this study is a qualitative method with data collection methods in the form of interviews The results of this study illustrate the homestay business program seen from the local institutions shown by the existence of a local organization that regulates tourism activities, Pokdarwis Lingko` Cave, which supervises homestay business actors who are self-supporting communities in the Kembang Kuning Tourism Village. Due to the beautiful rural scenery, rural tourism has gradually become a popular trend as affected by urbanization in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to develop an objective and systematic evaluation model for homestay selection in Taiwan. Specifically, this study combines three fuzzy multiple-criteria decision-making (FMCDM) methods of means-end chain (MEC), fuzzy decision making and trial evaluation laboratory (FDEMATEL), and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP). First, we use MEC to obtain important factors for homestay travelers to choose homestays, then we extract key influencing factors by FDEMATEL method, and finally, we rank these factors in importance by FAHP to provide travelers and managers with a reference. In addition, this study combines fuzzy theory to avoid the bias caused by human subjective judgment, so as to solve the problem of objectivity in the selection and evaluation model of homestay criteria. According to the results of our case studies, a clean environment, professional service staff, safe facilities and beautiful buildings are the key factors for consumers to choose homestays. The results of this study can provide a reference for homestay managers to understand the priorities of travelers and optimize customer service in Taiwan.

The Panauti homestay project is an emerging community-based homestay initiative in Nepal. Panauti is the homeland of the indigenous Newar people, known for their rich gastronomic heritage. However, the ethnic food heritage of the Newars is rapidly changing. This article examines the impact of community-based homestay tourism on the indigenous Newar community in Panauti through the lens of the local gastronomic heritage. Semistructured interviews and participant observations were used as qualitative methods during first authors' 3-month stay in the homestay destination. The findings identify and discuss the significant influence of homestay tourism on the food culture of the host families. The bottom-up tourism approach characteristic of community homestays has helped to sustain many elements of the traditional ethnic gastronomy in Panauti's rapidly changing food culture. Alongside this, tourism has helped to adapt the indigenous culinary heritage to influences from other food cultures, making it more eclectic and dynamic.

The development of tourism villages cannot be separated from the homestay existence as accommodation. As part of the tourism amenities, homestay's comfort is important. It's caused that the tourism activities products are intangible. Homestay feasibility will determine how long the visitor will allocate their time to stay in the tourist village. ASEAN Tourism in 2016 has published the standard homestay criteria, which contain nine variables standard criteria. The study aims to determine how far the homestay criteria' suitability in the tourism village according to visitors' perceptions in line with the ASEAN Tourism standard criteria established. Besides that, they also provide input to stakeholders to provide and manage the homestay properly and meet these criteria. This method is done by measuring six variables that are directly felt by visitors. The results show that among the six variables surveyed, five variables showed a level of conformity above 80%, and 1 variable in the level of 50% suitability.

The key factors that affect the tourist satisfaction and their motivation to revisit are the homestay attributes such as accessibility, accommodation, amenities, tourist attraction, tourist activities, and food. Therefore, this descriptive research aims to examine the impact of homestay attributes and mediating role of tourist satisfaction on tourist motivation to revisit homestay in Kuching, Sarawak from the perspectives of local and foreign tourists. The quantitative research through a valid and reliable self-administered survey questionnaire was conducted on 269 local visitors and 206 foreign visitors at four Kuching homestays located at Kampung Krokong Bau, Kampung Pueh Sematan, Kampung Annah Rais Padawan, and Kampung Santubong Kuching. The collected data were computed and analysed through SPSS 25 and SmartPLS. Only homestay attributes of tourist attraction, and food and meal are found to have a significant relationship with tourist satisfaction. While, homestay attributes of amenities, and food and meal are found to have a significant relationship with tourist motivation to revisit. The study proved that there is a significant relationship between tourist satisfaction and tourist motivation to revisit. It also proved that tourist satisfaction mediates the relationship between homestay attributes of tourist attraction, and food and meal on tourist motivation to revisit. The findings indicated that homestay attributes in Kuching, Sarawak need to be improved. Given the significant relationship of tourist attraction, amenities, and food and meal, as an index of tourist satisfaction and motivation to revisit, it is necessary that these homestay attributes to be improved.

Even though community participation was a crucial component of sustainable tourism, actual community participation was hard to achieve in developing countries. Only a few studies explored the local community participation in tourism villages. In response to this gap, this article explored owners’ participation to sustain their homestays. The research was built on descriptive and qualitative methods. The data were gathered by semi-structured interviews, participant observation, field notes, and photography. A sample population (6 persons) that include rural people and managers from a village. The result showed that cleanliness awareness was the homestay owners’ fundamental problem. The study also revealed that the homestay owners had not elaborated on their cultural uniqueness to create an unforgettable experience. They tried hard to design their homestays based on their knowledge rather than visitors’ demands. The external parties’ intervention, such as scholars, had to support the homestay owners to gain new insight into hospitality attitudes.

The homestay industry is part of the tourism services industry. It is important for homestay operators to provide services that can meet the needs and satisfaction of customers. However, there are some problems related to the quality of services provided by homestay operators that affect customer satisfaction. Problems arise due to a lack of knowledge of the dimensions that can be used to provide quality services. There are five dimensions of the SERVQUAL model that are associated with service quality characteristics and are able to influence homestay customer satisfaction, namely tangible, empathy, responsiveness, reliability, and assurance. This study was conducted with the aim of finding out the relationship between the five dimensions of SERVQUAL service quality with homestay customer satisfaction and identifying the dimensions that most affect customer satisfaction. This study uses quantitative methods and distributed a total of 384 questionnaires to respondents who are local tourists staying at the Hulu Selangor homestay. The results of the study found that the dimensions of tangible, empathy, responsiveness, reliability, and assurance have a positive relationship to customer satisfaction. There are two main dimensions that most affect the satisfaction of homestay customers, namely reliability and assurance. This customer satisfaction is influenced by the treatment received while dealing with homestay employees. Friendly and courteous homestay workers make customers happy and comfortable to get help when needed. Homestay's that provide services efficiently without any errors from the early stage is also able to affect the level of customer satisfaction. Each homestay operator who are concerned with five dimensions and implement them in homestay services will strive to enhance and maintain the quality of the image as the best homestay.

Background: At seasonal tourist destinations like Shimla, rooms may remain vacant and unoccupied during lean peri ods. To add on, pandemic has already shut many small lodging facilities. Objective: The aim of this study is to improve our understanding of how homestay activities can contribute to revitalize sustainable tourism trends in Shimla, the study assumes particular importance in a period of economic crisis characterized by post covid trauma. Methodology: A survey was conducted in Shimla after first wave of corona virus from September 20 to December 20 as soon as the travel restrictions were uplifted. The travel and accommodation preferences of tourists were observed and found to be shifting towards less frequently visited places avoiding mass tourism. To highlight the role of homestays in reviving these tourism trends, three objectives were identified. Two separate questionnaires were developed to get the quantitative and qualitative data for this research. The data was tabulated and evaluated using SPSS tool. Results: The findings presented the analysed profile of the potential homestay operators as well as visitors seeking homestay tourism. It also reports the motivations, expectation and experience of the tourists regarding various aspects of homestay. Conclusion: Homestays can act as potential vital tool in reviving tourism.

The resilience of homestays in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic cannot be separated from the forming factor, namely the approach to capital factors. The purpose of this study is that resilience analysis plays a role in mediating the influence of human capital, economic capital, and physical capital on the sustainability of the homestay business in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic in the implementation of the Covid-19 green zone in the Sanur Region. This research type uses quantitative methods to design research variables and formulate hypotheses. This research was conducted on 63 homestay units implementing the Covid green zone in Sanur City, Denpasar City. The research sample was determined purposively as many as 124 homestay business actors. Data was collected using a questionnaire. Data analysis using path analysis. The analysis results show that human capital, economic capital, social capital, and physical capital have a positive and significant effect on homestay resilience and the sustainability of the homestay business. Homestay resilience plays a role in mediating the influence of human capital, economic capital, and physical capital on the sustainability of the homestay business but does not mediate social influences.

Through literature review, it can be concluded that homestay is greatly affected by macro factors, such as geographical location, resources, national policies and prices, in the overall environment. This paper holds that, based on the influence of the above factors, improving business strategies to enhance customer satisfaction and customer loyalty is an important way to improve the development of home stay facilities.

The main objective of this exploratory research was to identify the important dimensions and specific aspects of the China tourists’ experiences with the longhouse homestays, specifically with a Bidayuh longhouse in Kuching. It was a qualitative research using site visits and focus group interview. The visits and interviews involved fiveChina tourists. The contents of the interviews were analyzed and their experiences were categorized to form more than 15 dimensions with the respective items. The fifteen dimensions were, namely: Journey, ICT, Communication with Tourist, Culture, Moral,Education, Tourist Service, Tourist Engagement, Homestay Management, Food and Beverages, Cleanliness, Nature, Built Environment, Art, and Security. Besides, their suggestions were also obtained for the homestay programme to be improved. The limitations of this research and direction for future research were also discussed.

This study aims to analyze sharia-based homestay management in the Mandalika Circuit area. This research uses a qualitative research method based on phenomenology. Informants in this study are homestay managers around the Mandalika Circuit. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman technique, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Laksana Village is in Ibun Sub-District, Bandung District. Geographically, Laksana Village is close to the Kamojang Tourism area, which is the leading tourism destination in Bandung District. The village has the potential for tourism development. To support the tourism development program, there are several homestays. However, it was found that many tourists spent the night outside the Laksana Village area. Another problem faced by homestay managers is the difficulty in determining homestay tariff. This Community Service (CS) activity aims to explore the problems faced by homestay managers through self-identification of problems using the Community Based Participatory Research method. The results of the self-identification became the basis for the CS Team to map the nine elements of the canvas business model. The cost structure becomes a priority scale to be handled in order to solve the tariff determination problem and is expected to increase the value proposition. This CS activity specifically resulted in self-identification of problems and a business canvas model for homestay management.

As an emerging business form of tourism development, homestays also play an important role in China’s rural revitalization and tourism transformation and upgrading, and has attracted increasing social attention. At present, Chongqing is the city with the largest number of homestays in China. Taking Chongqing as a case-study area, based on the homestay data of the Baidu map, this paper comprehensively uses the methods of spatial analysis, multiple regression and geographical weighted regression to thoroughly analyze the regional characteristics and influencing factors of homestay distribution in Chongqing. The results show that: (1) the nearest-neighbor index R of homestay distributions in Chongqing and all regions is one, which shows an obvious agglomeration type. (2) In addition to being highly concentrated in the central urban area, three secondary high-density areas are also formed in the surrounding areas of the central urban area, and there is a trend of concentration and contiguity. The spatial distribution densities of the two urban agglomerations in Southeast and Northeast Chongqing are very low, and the overall distributions are extremely uneven. (3) The factors, such as tourism resource endowment, economic development, service industry development, traffic location, consumption demand and social development conditions, have significant impacts on the distribution pattern of homestays, and the impacts of each factor on the layout of homestays has obvious spatial heterogeneity. Analyzing and revealing the temporal and spatial characteristics and dynamic mechanism of homestays has an important theoretical value and practical significance for better serving the new urbanization plan and implementing the strategy of urban–rural integration and rural revitalization.

Homestays have settled current encouraging tourism becoming an important source of income for many families in rural areas of Nepal. Homestay has supported the local and external visitors to learn about the local culture, custom, traditions, and diversity among others. The objective of this study was to find out the socio-economic opportunities and its impact on local community of Dallagaon, Bardiya. This study further observed the cultural impact of homestays on the host community. Concurrent mixed-methods research design was used to understand the situation of homestay at the destination by using the questionnaire, interview and key informant information as the tools. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The result shows that homestays plays the vital role to conserve the culture by increasing local product and to empower in the education by increasing the economic conditions. It helps to improve communication skills as well as reduce migration problems and hence supportive for local employment. There is no significant difference between the economic and socio-cultural impact of homestays on the host community as perceived by homestay operators in the sample according to the t-test analysis. Dallagaon may be the best destination for those tourists who seek rich, unique and firsthand Tharu culture. The local communities are becoming more aware of their cultural identity, preservation, and the creation of new local infrastructure. It will contribute the creation of more job opportunities, infrastructure development, and essentially poverty reduction.

Tujuan dari kegiatan Pengabdian pada masyarakat ini adalah untuk meningkatkan partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengembangan desa wisata. Metode yang dilakukan adalah kualitatif deskriptif melalui model pendekatan Focus Group Dsicution (FGD) dan teknologi transfer (TT). Guna mencapai tujuan tersebut kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah penyuluhan potensi dan peluang ekonomi kreatif penunjang wisata serta penyuluhan dan pendampingan pondok wisata (homestay). Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan dan minat masyarakat dalam memanfaatkan sumberdaya lokal melalui industri kreatif serta penyediaan homestay dalam menunjang aktifitas desa wisata. Terdapat kendala pengembangan industri kreatif di desa wisata Pakualam yaitu permodalan, keterampilan SDM, teknologi produksi, pemasaran dan dukungan pemerintah. Sedangkan penyediaan homestay memiliki kendala dalam hal keterbatasan ruangan, fasilitas pendukung yang kurang lengkap, serta kurangnya keterampilan dalam pengelolaan homestay. Faktor pendorong keberhasilan industri kreatif dan homestay adalah terdapatnya dukungan dari aparat desa, partisipasi aktif warga masyarakat yang dilatar belakangi oleh motivasi kuat untuk bertahan hidup pasca pengenangan waduk Jatigede dan peluang semakin berkembangnya wisata di kawasan waduk Jatigede.

AbstractThe study abroad homestay enjoys a widespread reputation as a key context for language learning. However, a homestay advantage has been difficult to prove in large-scale quantitative studies. Few qualitative studies examine the long-term developmental processes that can take place in homestays at the micro-ethnographic level. This paper focuses on how one participant, John, gradually developed awareness of the role of compliments and ability to use them for various purposes. Drawing on Vygotskian sociocultural theory, this study analyzes qualitative changes in John’s use of compliments from informal interaction in two homestays across a year. Over time, John learned to use compliments for an array of purposes: expressing appreciation for food, maintaining his hosts’ positive face, developing cordial relationships, and defusing potential conflict. Development in John’s case is evident as he internalized this speech act that he once grappled with, and used it to mediate the behavior of the others when confronted with interactionally and emotionally challenging situations. This process led to John’s ability to participate appropriately as a guest at the Chinese homestay dinner table and to appreciate the subtleties of interpersonal communication that includes unstated expressions of affection.

Bagi wisatawan, objek wisata alam, kuliner dan pengalaman unik merupakan daya tarik untuk melakukan kunjungan wisata ke suatu daerah. Wisatawan datang ke suatu daerah untuk berburu atau bernostalgia dengan alam sekaligus menikmati makanan khas daerah setempat. Di era new normal ini, industri pariwsata melakukan “tourism recovery” menata kembali objek wisata, wisata kuliner dan homestay sehingga mejadi destinasi wisata yang sesuai dengan kondisi pandemik. Nagari Harau tergolong nagari yang tingkat ekonomi masyarakat rendah dan keadaan sarana dan prasarana yang belum memadai, penghasilan masyarakat yang rendah serta sumber daya manusia baik ilmu pengetahuan maupun keterampilan masih belum terlatih. Di Nagari Harau terdapat homestay yang hanya baru sebatas menyediakan tempat dan belum memiliki pengetahuan untuk memberikan pengalaman yang unik seperti menyiapkan makanan khas Harau; khas Sumatera Barat atau makanan nusantara. Setiap homestay perlu diberikan/ditingkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan yaitu peningkatan wawasan, keterampilan, dan manajemen, tentang penerapan olahan makanan dan minuman khas Harau, khas Minang. Kegiatan pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk melakukan pemberdayaan masyarakat lokal Nagari Harau Kecamatan Harau Kabupaten Limapuluh Kota menuju pariwisata halal khususnya dibidang kuliner halal.

ABSTRACT
The Covid-19 pandemic has made tourists choose tourist destinations, namely areas that are far from the crowds and choose to stay at homestays to avoid crowds. For tourists, natural attractions, culinary and unique experiences are the main attraction for visiting an area. Tourists come to an area to hunt or reminisce with nature while enjoying the local specialties. In this new normal era, the tourism industry is carrying out "tourism recovery" rearranging tourist attractions, culinary tourism and homestays so that they become tourist destinations that are in accordance with the conditions of the pandemic. Nagari Harau is classified as a nagari with a low level of community economy and inadequate facilities and infrastructure, low community income and human resources both in terms of knowledge and skills are still not trained. In Nagari Harau there are homestays that are only limited to providing a place and do not yet have the knowledge to provide unique experiences such as preparing Harau specialties; typical of West Sumatra or archipelago food. Each homestay needs to be given/improved knowledge and skills, namely increasing insight, skills, and management, regarding the application of processed food and beverages typical of Harau, typical of Minang. This training activity aims to empower the local community of Nagari Harau, Harau District, Limapuluh Kota Regency towards halal tourism, especially in the field of halal culinary.

In recent years, the rural homestay has developed rapidly against the background of rural-revitalization policies. However, in early 2020, COVID-19 broke out in China, and the homestay industry was faced with a great challenge. It was difficult for self-employed homestays to resist the risks of the pandemic. As a result, defective operation and business failure occurred in some regions. However, rural homestays with a background in the brand, chain and cluster development mode persisted in the market with a diversity of operation principles. This paper tries to set up an evaluation system for understanding the occupancy needs of tourists, in order to improve the ability of rural homestays to resist risks. The article offers a methodology for assessing the tourist experience of rural homestays in coastal areas, with homestays in Dapeng New District of Shenzhen taken as the research objectives. Then, the evaluation system of rural homestays is set up from the perspective of tourist experience. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey and interviews of operators, this paper proposes the tourist experience–importance analysis in Jiaochangwei and Xichong by the importance–performance analysis (IPA) method. Finally, it suggests policy recommendations that can resist high risk based on tourist experience, for the sustainable development of rural homestays in China.

Homestay in Maninjau Village is a simple type of lodging that only relies on a few rooms to be rented out to tourists and managed by the community. The purpose of this study is to analyze how homestay inn managers in Maninjau Village promote their lodging in terms of the media used and how homestay inn managers in Maninjau Village promote their lodging in terms of the manager's accuracy in choosing and using promotional media. Data collection techniques used are interviews, observation, and documentation. The informant determined in this study is Purpose Sampling, which is a technique of collecting data sources that are needed with certain considerations. The type of research used is descriptive with qualitative data consisting of five indicators, namely Advertising/Marketing, Personal Sales, Sales Promotion, Public Relations, and Word of Mouth. Data collection techniques used are interviews, observation, and documentation. It was concluded that there were two findings obtained. The general finding is that homestay managers in Maninjau Tourism Village have begun to understand that promotion is very important to increase homestay income. Managers have used advertising promotion media both in print media using business cards or relying on the internet. Managers are also starting to understand how they can promote homestays in a very simple way. Even so, there is a need for monitoring and increasing knowledge about promotion. Not only with hardcopy media and the internet, but promotions also require suggestions, comments, and criticisms to help improve homestay shortcomings and minimize the same mistakes in the future.
