Abstract:
The Elderly Social Services is a community service institution under the auspices of the Social Service which is intended to improve the welfare of the elderly in their old age. The lack of this institution in the city of Banjarmasin has an impact on the low welfare of the elderly in the city of Banjarmasin. Designing Elderly Social Services in the city of Banjarmasin is expected to improve the welfare of the elderly in the city of Banjarmasin, to help achieve the goal of improving welfare of the elderly. The problem raised in the elderly social services is the design that requires it to be a comfortable home and gives the impression of kinship to its inhabitants. Research using behavioral architectural methods as a reference in designing, so as to produce a Homey concept in buildings to make the elderly feel comfortable and find the meaning of the word back home, in buildings that conceptualize the homey of the elderly will be directed to know each other and make a family impression between them.

Abstract:
Merapi Volcano erupted in 2010 and a community-based relocation of the destroyed area was implemented step by step in 2011, 2012, and 2013. This study, therefore, employed the Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) Method to investigate the ability of the new (permanent) housing model in Pagerjurang Kepuharjo Village, Yogyakarta to make its residents feel at home more than the old one and to determine the residents’ responses to their life after 10 years of living in the new model. Questionnaires were used to collect responses from 24 families and the results showed the residents became comfortable after 2 years of living in the new (permanent) housing due to the fulfillment of the post-disaster basic needs and do not wish to be back and live in their old houses. They were also reported to have felt satisfied with the new facilities such as the well-designed infrastructure including clean water, sanitation, electricity, streets, and evacuation routes as well as the well-designed layout with the houses built together (gotong-royong) to ensure more efficiency in terms of design. The model was also supported by the Government in terms of housing cost subsidy. In conclusion, the new community-based (permanent) housing has the ability to create a homey atmosphere and helps to ease the post-eruption recovery.

Abstract:
Although Louise Andreas-Salomd has been the focus of biographical interest the essence of her theoretical ideas is mostly overlooked. Indeed, only a smattering of her total body of writing has been translated into English and in her native German her works are rarely available. This essay examines LAS's figurative role in the Freud/ Jung split, hypothesizing that it was she whom Jung referred to as the anti-oedipal ‘sterile mother goose with a sagging belly and varicose veins’; the mother whom the son (Jung) could never love. The way in which Lou's relationship with Freud was sealed in their mutual analysis of ‘daughter Anna’, and the development of her crucial relationship with Freud are examined. Finally, Lou's own maturing critique of Freud is discussed in the context of her ideas about dual-orientated narcissism and the centrality of the infant's pre-oedipal relationship with mother. Lou's ideas - which ran ahead of Melanie Klein, Anna Freud, Helene Deutsch and Karen Homey - are considered in terms of the first wave of psychoanalytic feminism.

Abstract:
The varying color of sunlight diurnally exhibits an important effect on circadian rhythm of living organisms. The bluish-white daylight that is suitable for work shows a color temperature as high as 9,000 K, while the homey orange-white dusk hue is as low as 2,000 K. We demonstrate in this report the feasibility of using organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology to fabricate sunlight-style illumination with a very wide color temperature range. The color temperature can be tuned from 2,300 K to 9,300 K, for example, by changing the applied voltage from 3 to 11 V for the device composing red and yellow emitters in the first emissive layer and blue emitter in the second. Unlike the prior arts, the color-temperature span can be made much wider without any additional carrier modulation layer, which should enable a more cost effective fabrication. For example, the color-temperature span is 7,000 K for the above case, while it is 1,700 K upon the incorporation of a nanoscale hole modulation layer in between the two emissive layers. The reason why the present device can effectively regulate the shifting of recombination zone is because the first emissive layer itself possesses an effective hole modulation barrier of 0.2 eV. This also explains why the incorporation of an extra hole modulation layer with a 0.7 eV barrier did not help extend the desirable color-temperature span since excessive holes may be blocked.

Abstract:
The article explores how clothing exposes – and troubles – the ambiguous location of care homes on the boundaries of public/private, home/institutional space. It deploys a material analysis of the symbolic uses and meanings of dress, extending the remit of the new cultural gerontology to encompass the “fourth age,” and the lives of older people with dementia. The article draws on an ESRC-funded study “Dementia and Dress,” conducted in the United Kingdom (UK), which explored everyday experiences of clothing for people with dementia, carers and careworkers, using ethnographic and qualitative methods. Careworkers and managers were keen to emphasise the “homely” nature of care homes, yet this was sometimes at odds with the desire to maintain presentable and orderly bodies, and with institutional routines of bodywork. Residents’ use of clothing could disrupt boundaries of public/private space, materialising a sense of not being “at home,” and a desire to return there.

Abstract:
Accommodation and care for older people is commonly thought of in relation to residential care homes: the collective settings with communal lounges and dining rooms, where older people may live what seems to be a fine balance between individual and group routines. Yet, while there have been changes to the living arrangements of people in relatively large collective groups, the ideal put forward as a basis for care settings has remained that of ‘home’, with the family model still central. With the tensions between public and private, domestic and institutional living, regulated and non-regulated settings, all too obvious, this article uses a pilot study in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire of registered small homes with less than four residential places, often run by the proprietor and her family, to consider whether residential homes may replicate a homely environment, or whether the model has run its course.

Abstract:
This study examines the association between nursing assistants’ perceptions of their psychosocial work environment and satisfaction among older people receiving care in nursing homes and home care. Cross-sectional surveys were conducted among people receiving care ( N = 1,535) and nursing assistants ( N = 1,132) in 45 nursing homes and 21 home care units within municipal old-age care. Better psychosocial work environment was related to higher satisfaction in old-age care among the recipients. Significant and stronger associations were more common in nursing homes than in home care. Perception of mastery and positive challenges at work were associated with higher recipient satisfaction both in home care and in nursing homes: social climate, perception of group work, perception of mastery, and positive challenges at work only in nursing homes. Findings suggest that recipient satisfaction may be increased by improving the psychosocial work environment for nursing assistants, both in nursing homes and in home care.

Direct leadership was associated with the psychosocial work environment in nursing homes and home care. Furthermore, better leadership was related to higher satisfaction among nursing assistants and older people in nursing homes. Thus, indirect leadership had no effect on recipients’ satisfaction in either nursing homes or home care. The path analysis showed an indirect effect between leadership factors and recipient satisfaction. The findings suggest that the psychosocial work environment of nursing assistants and recipient satisfaction in nursing homes can be increased by improving leadership.

AbstractSince the 1990s, there has been substantial expansion of facility-based alternatives to nursing home care, such as assisted living facilities. This paper analyzes the relationship between expansion of the assisted living industry, nursing home market structure and nursing home private pay prices using a two-year panel of nursing homes in the State of Ohio. Fixed effect regressions suggest that the expansion of assisted living facilities are associated with increased nursing home concentration, but find no effect on private pay nursing home prices. This would be consistent with assisted livings reducing demand for nursing homes by delaying entry into a nursing home, though assisted livings are not direct competitors of nursing homes.

Abstract:
We measure the impact of a golf course as a residential amenity on surrounding home values in several communities in Shelby County, Alabama. We compare the values of homes in golf course communities (GCCs) and non-golf course communities, as well as the values of homes within these communities before and after the golf course closes. Using a methodology similar to Bond, Seiler, and Seiler (2002), we examine the sales prices of homes within GCCs both before and after a golf course closure to see how the closure affects the sales prices of homes and test for the significance of that difference. We calculate the difference in value for homes in GCCs before and after the golf course is closed and test for the significance of that difference. We estimate the degree to which specific factors explain the variance in home prices in these communities before and after the golf course closed. We find that homes in GCCs sell at a 9% premium compared to homes in non-GCCs. We also find that home prices in GCCs decrease by 17% after the related golf course closes; home prices for properties adjacent to a golf course diminish as well.

Urinary catheterisation in care homes is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Catheterisation rates in English care homes can vary significantly, yet the cause of these variations remains unclear. The authors approached 114 randomly selected care homes (3,190 residents) in the health district of Gloucestershire, England. A postal questionnaire survey was used to determine the number of catheters per care home and where residents' catheters were first acquired. There was a wide range of urinary catheterisation prevalence between homes, with some homes having no catheterised residents and one home with a prevalence of 47%. The majority of care home residents acquired catheters as hospital in-patients (57%), prior to care home admission. The authors suggest that patients discharged from hospital with a urinary catheter need a catheter care plan stating the reason for catheter insertion, and plans for review and removal. There is a need for ongoing local audits in primary and secondary care to determine how many patients are being discharged with unnecessary urinary catheters.

Abstract:
Homes that can collaborate with their residents rather than simply provide shelter are becoming a reality. These homes such as Georgia Tech's “Aware Home” can potentially provide support to residents. Older adults in particular may benefit from the supports provided by these Aware Homes if they utilize the technologies they offer. The purpose of this study is to explore the privacy concerns that older adults may have about a home equipped with a visual sensing device. Using a structured interview approach we propose to investigate how variables such as the type of images the home captures and the physical and mental health of the residents of the home may affect privacy concerns. Findings from scenario-based structured interviews will be used to better understand the characteristics of these variables and how they relate to privacy concerns about visual sensing devices. Such data are critical for a model of home-based privacy concerns, for better design of home based visual sensing systems, and for providing information about sensing systems so that individuals may make informed choices concerning what devices to have in their homes.

Abstract:
Smart home and artificial intelligence technologies are developing rapidly, and various smart home products associated with artificial intelligence (AI) improved the quality of living for occupants. Although some studies discussed the application of artificial intelligence in smart homes, few publications fully considered the integration of literature and products. In this paper, we aim to answer the research questions of “what is the trend of smart home technology and products” and “what is the relationship between literature and products in smart homes with AI”. Literature reviews and product reviews are given to define the functions and roles of artificial intelligence in smart homes. We determined the application status of artificial intelligence in smart home products and how it is utilized in our house so that we could understand how artificial intelligence is used to make smart homes. Furthermore, our results revealed that there is a delay between literature and products, and smart home intelligent interactions will become more and more popular.

Abstract:
A national survey of 298 group homes and 138 foster homes serving adults with severe mental retardation was conducted in order to identify activities engaged in and skill competencies needed by adults living in these community residences. Residential staff were asked to rate 78 functional activities or skills in 8 categories; 31 of the activities were rated on a “frequency” scale and 47 skills were rated on a “need” scale. Foster home and group home staff gave similar ratings in five of the six “need” categories; however, group home staff indicated a greater need for outside work or day activity programs for their residents than did foster home staff. Furthermore, group home staff reported significantly higher frequency ratings for leisure activities than was reported in foster homes.

Abstract:
Our homes are becoming increasingly sensorized and smarter. However, they are also becoming increasingly complex, making accessing them and their advantages difficult. Assistants have the potential for improving the accessibility of smart homes, by providing everyone with an integrated, natural, and multimodal way of interacting with the home’s ecosystem. To demonstrate this potential and contribute to more environmentally friendly homes, in the scope of the project Smart Green Homes, a home assistant highly integrated with an ICT (Information and communications technology) home infrastructure was developed, deployed in a demonstrator, and evaluated by seventy users. The users’ global impression of our home assistant is in general positive, with 61% of the participants rating it as good or excellent overall and 51% being likely or very likely to recommend it to others. Moreover, most think that the assistant enhances interaction with the smart home’s multiple devices and is easy to use by everyone. These results show that a home assistant providing an integrated view of a smart home, through natural, multimodal, and adaptive interaction, is a suitable solution for enhancing the accessibility of smart homes and thus contributing to a better living ambient for all of their inhabitants.

Abstract:
BackgroundThirteen residential care homes and 10 nursing homes specialising in older people in Rushcliffe, England, participated in an improvement programme. The enhanced support provided included regular visits from named general practitioners and additional training for care home staff. We assessed and compared the effect on hospital use for residents in residential and nursing homes, respectively.MethodsUsing linked care home and administrative hospital data, we examined people aged 65 years or over who moved to a participating care home between 2014 and 2016 (n=568). We selected matched control residents who had similar characteristics to the residents receiving enhanced support and moved to similar care homes not participating in the enhanced support (n=568). Differences in hospital use were assessed for residents of each type of care home using multivariable regression.ResultsResidents of participating residential care homes showed lower rates of potentially avoidable emergency admissions (rate ratio 0.50, 95% CI 0.30 to 0.82), emergency admissions (rate ratio 0.60, 95% CI 0.42 to 0.86) and Accident & Emergency attendances (0.57, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.81) than matched controls. Hospital bed days, outpatient attendances and the proportion of deaths that occurred out of hospital were not statistically different. For nursing home residents, there were no significant differences for any outcome.ConclusionsThe enhanced support was associated with lower emergency hospital use for older people living in residential care homes but not for people living in nursing homes. This might be because there was more potential to reduce emergency care for people in residential care homes. In nursing homes, improvement programmes may need to be more tailored to residents’ needs or the context of providing care in that setting.

Abstract:
This study uses path analysis models to evaluate the associations between zoning, development density and the sales prices of new and existing single-family homes at the dwelling-unit level in Portland, Oregon. Development density is associated with the sales prices of single-family homes directly by determining land costs and indirectly by correlating with the size and construction costs of structures. A prominent trend in Portland’s and the nation’s real estate markets is that new single-family homes are getting bigger. Another trend is that single-family homes have been built on smaller lots despite their growing floor areas. Because developers tend to build smaller homes on smaller lots, the decline of lot sizes helps to contain the effect of growing home size on housing prices. However, the counter effect of smaller lot sizes is somewhat weak because home sizes have a stronger association with housing prices than lot sizes. Homebuyers in Portland are willing to pay a premium to live in neighbourhoods with higher densities, which further limits the potential of higher density development as a tool to reduce single-family home costs. In addition to its indirect associations with home prices via the determination of lot and home sizes, zoning exhibits a significant and direct association with the prices of existing single-family homes, but not with the sales prices of new single-family homes. Existing single-family homes in higher density zones tend to sell at lower prices, ceteris paribus, suggesting that the concern of future neighbourhood change prevails over the opportunity for redevelopment.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTLong-stay home care clients mostly reside in private homes or retirement homes, and the type of residence may influence risk factors for long-term care placement. This multi-state analytic study uses RAI-Home Care and administrative data from the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network to model conceptualized states of risk at baseline through a 13-month follow-up period. Modifiable risk factors in these states were client loneliness or depressive symptoms, and caregiver distress. A higher adjusted likelihood of being discharged deceased was found for the lowest-risk clients in retirement homes. Adjusting for client, service, and caregiver characteristics, retirement home residency was associated with higher likelihood of placement in a long-term care home; reduced caregiver distress; and increased client loneliness/depression. As an alternative to private home settings as the location for aging in place among these long-stay home care clients, retirement home residency represents some trade-offs between client and informal caregiver.

Abstract:
SUMMARYA recent countrywide MRSA spa-type 1081 outbreak in The Netherlands predominantly affected nursing homes, generating questions on how infection spreads within and between nursing homes despite a low national prevalence. Since the transfer of residents between nursing homes is uncommon in The Netherlands, we hypothesized that staff exchange plays an important role in transmission. This exploratory study investigated the extent of former (last 2 years) and current staff exchange within and between nursing homes in The Netherlands. We relied on a questionnaire that was targeted towards nursing-home staff members who had contact with residents. We found that 17·9% and 12·4% of the nursing-home staff formerly (last 2 years) or currently worked in other healthcare institutes besides their job in the nursing home through which they were selected to participate in this study. Moreover, 39·7% of study participants worked on more than one ward. Our study shows that, in The Netherlands, nursing-home staff form a substantial number of links between wards within nursing homes and nursing homes are linked to a large network of healthcare institutes through their staff members potentially providing a pathway for MRSA transmission between nursing homes and throughout the country.

Abstract:
We spend the majority of our lives indoors; yet, we currently lack a comprehensive understanding of how the microbial communities found in homes vary across broad geographical regions and what factors are most important in shaping the types of microorganisms found inside homes. Here, we investigated the fungal and bacterial communities found in settled dust collected from inside and outside approximately 1200 homes located across the continental US, homes that represent a broad range of home designs and span many climatic zones. Indoor and outdoor dust samples harboured distinct microbial communities, but these differences were larger for bacteria than for fungi with most indoor fungi originating outside the home. Indoor fungal communities and the distribution of potential allergens varied predictably across climate and geographical regions; where you live determines what fungi live with you inside your home. By contrast, bacterial communities in indoor dust were more strongly influenced by the number and types of occupants living in the homes. In particular, the female : male ratio and whether a house had pets had a significant influence on the types of bacteria found inside our homes highlighting that who you live with determines what bacteria are found inside your home.

Abstract:
Quality of care has been a long-standing issue in US nursing homes. The culture change movement attempts to transition nursing homes from health care institutions to person-centered homes. While the adoption of culture change has been spreading across nursing homes, barriers to adoption persist. Nursing homes that disproportionately serve minority residents may have additional challenges implementing culture change compared with other facilities due to limited financial and staffing resources. The objective of this study was to examine how nursing home characteristics are associated with culture change adoption in Central Florida nursing homes. This cross-sectional study included 81 directors of nursing (DONs) who completed the Artifacts of Culture Change survey. In addition, nursing home organizational data were obtained from the Certification and Survey Provider Enhanced Reports (CASPER). A logistic regression was conducted to examine the relationship between high culture change adoption and nursing home characteristics. The overall adoption of culture change scores in Central Florida nursing homes was low. Nevertheless, there was variability across nursing homes in the adoption of culture change. High culture change adoption was associated with nursing homes having lower proportions of Medicaid residents.

Abstract:
Purpose Research in care homes requires the co-operation of care home managers. Noting the challenges faced by the care home sector, the purpose of this paper is to consider ways in which research studies can encourage care home managers and their homes to participate in research. Design/methodology/approach The discussion is informed by two research projects which are used to explore methods of encouraging managers of care homes to participate in research. One of the studies included interviews with care home managers to understand their reasons for taking part in research. Findings This paper outlines and assesses three strategies for encouraging care home managers to participate in research: working in partnership, providing payment and providing personalised feedback on findings. Whereas all the strategies have the potential to encourage care home managers’ participation in research, partnership working in particular was found to be fraught with difficulties. Research limitations/implications This paper suggests that the research projects could employ any of these strategies to encourage managers of care homes to participate in research. It also suggests that proactive measures could help ameliorate the pitfalls of partnership working. Originality/value This paper shows the advantages and disadvantages of using a combination of strategies for encouraging the participation of care home managers in research.

Abstract:
Background: Nursing home residents are a vulnerable population. Most of them suffer from multi-morbidity, while many have cognitive impairment or dementia and need care around the clock. Several ethical challenges in nursing homes have been described in the scientific literature. Most studies have used staff members as informants, some have focused on the relatives’ view, but substantial knowledge about the residents’ perspective is lacking. Objective: To study what nursing home residents and their relatives perceive as ethical challenges in Norwegian nursing homes. Research design: A qualitative design with in-depth interviews with nursing home residents, and focus-group interviews with relatives of nursing home residents. The digitally recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim. Analysis was based on Interpretive Description. Participants and research context: A total of 25 nursing home residents from nine nursing homes in Norway, and 18 relatives of nursing home residents from three of these nursing homes. Ethical considerations: This study was reported to and approved by the Regional Ethics Committee in Oslo, Norway. Findings and discussion: The main ethical challenges in Norwegian nursing homes from the residents’ and relatives’ perspective were as follows: (a) acceptance and adaptation, (b) well-being and a good life, (c) autonomy and self-determination, and (d) lack of resources. The relationship with the staff was of outmost importance and was experienced as both rewarding and problematic. None of the residents in our study mentioned ethical challenges connected to end-of-life care. Conclusion: Residents and relatives experience ethical challenges in Norwegian nursing homes, mostly connected to “everyday ethical issues.”
