Abstract:

This thesis is devoted to the categorification of polynomial invariants of graphs and links. For any positive integer n, Khovanov and Rozansky introduced in 2004 a bigraded link homology, and an homology of planar graphs. Given n, their link homology categorifies the n-th specialization of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial and their homology of planar graphs categorifies an associated graph polynomial. In this thesis, we study these homology and generalize their constructions by introducing an additional grading. First, we generalize a formula of Jaeger for link polynomials to polynomials of planar graphs and associated homology of planar graphs; we extend also the link homology of Khovanov and Rozansky to embedded graphs. Then we construct a triply graded link homology. This homology recovers the bigraded link homology of Khovanov and Rozansky. Finally, we give examples, applications and generalizations of the triply graded link homology. We develop homological tools that permit to compute explicitly the triply graded link homology for some knots and we consider deformations of the triply graded link homology

Avery, Dwayne. "(Un)homely cinema." Thesis, McGill University, 2011. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=103637.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation offers an analysis of the cinematic (un)homely. Loosely based on Freud's concept of the uncanny – that frightful and inexplicable experience of the home as a foreign and strange space – the (un)homely is a poignant sign of the times, a contemporary trope of the various kinds of spatial dislocation, transience, homelessness and disempowerment symptomatic of contemporary global societies. In short the (un)homely conjures up the decline of family, its faltering role as the moral center of the world and all the unpleasant ramifications that come from the destabilization of the home. The (un)homely speaks to the breakdown of what is deemed proper – the distinction between public and private space, the unraveling of gender norms, the troubling de-localization of mobile technologies. While the uncanny nature of the home is a mainstay in many science fiction and horror films, my analysis uses the concept of the (un)homely to explore a wide range of contemporary films that explore every day domestic environments and the way the home is the site for a wide range of devastating intrusions – from the precarious nature of the nation in an age of globalization to the way mobile work seeps into the protective spaces of the home. These intrusions I contend provide themes and images related to the ways in which contemporary social relations, work and new technologies prevent characters from ever finding their way home. However, while an encounter with the (un)homely represents a painful experience with the loss of home, the (un)homely can offer an ethics of dwelling, as the impossibility of narrative closure or the shift in power relations offer new and more hopeful ways of dwelling in the world.

Fahrig, Stephen David. "The Context of the Text: Reading Hebrews as a Eucharistic Homily." Thesis, Boston College, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:107586.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Thomas D. Stegman
The majority of exegetes agree that the so-called “Letter” to the Hebrews is actually a homily, meant to be read aloud to a Christian community gathered for worship. In The Context of the Text: Reading Hebrews as a Eucharistic Homily, I argue that the specific venue for the public reading of Hebrews was a celebration of the Eucharist. It is my contention that the author presumed and exploited this Eucharistic setting in order to bolster his claims about the superiority of Christ and his sacrifice to the sacrifices of the “first covenant”, as well as to entreat his readers to remain faithful to Christian Eucharistic worship. This dissertation begins in Chapter 1 by considering the “state of the question,” examining the positions of scholars who take – respectively – negative, agnostic and positive positions regarding Eucharistic references in Hebrews. Chapter 2 situates the question of Hebrews and the Eucharist within the broader milieu of the liturgical provenance of New Testament writings. Chapter 3 considers the issues of Hebrews’ authorship, date of composition, audience, rhetorical strategy, and literary structure as they pertain to my argument that the text was written for proclamation at the Eucharist. Chapter 4 offers an extensive study of several passages from Hebrews which appear to allude to the Eucharist without mentioning the sacrament explicitly (Hebrews 6:4; 9:20; 10:19-25; 12:22-24; 13:10; and 13:15), setting forth the claim that the allusive nature of these references is explained by the Eucharistic milieu for which the homily was written. In particular, I argue that a Eucharistic understanding of Hebrews 13:10 (“We have an altar from which those who officiate in the tent have no right to eat”) is the linchpin for understanding other Eucharistic references in Hebrews and that this verse serves as a major reinforcement of the author’s earlier claims regarding the supreme efficacy of Christ’s redemptive work. I hold that the author’s mention of an “altar” in 13:10 is meant to be understood as a reference to the Eucharistic table and that, taken as such, this statement parallels the claim in 8:1 (“We have such a high priest”) in order to demonstrate that Christians have both a superior priest (Christ) and a superior cultic act (the Eucharist). Finally, Chapter 5 considers interpretive traditions (particularly patristic and Eastern) which bolster the case for a Eucharistic interpretation of Hebrews

Harrow, Sharon Rebecca. ""Homely adventures": Domesticity, travel, andthe gender economy of colonial difference in eighteenth-century British literature." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/284078.

Full text
Abstract:
"Homely Adventures": Travel and the Gender Economy of Colonial Difference in Eighteenth-Century British Literature examines the shift from adventure tales, in which characters dress up in the signs of colonial otherness, to domestic stories, in which characters are valued for their assimilation into an idealized, bourgeois identity. In so doing, I demonstrate that England's literary imagination and national identity were increasingly built upon an economy of colonial difference. In demonstrating the relationship between domesticity and difference, I analyze canonical fiction in a colonial context and read women's travel writing in the context of abolitionist poetry, natural history, and political pamphlets. Chapter one argues that Daniel Defoe's novel, Captain Singleton, moved questions of domesticity and sexuality, usually constellated around the notion of the home, into the public realm of colonial enterprise. Singleton transports his adventures to a home in England and threatens the countryside with piratical illegitimacy. Chapter two argues that Richard Cumberland's sentimental play, The West Indian, resolved colonialism's anxieties by incorporating worry about Afro-Caribbean commerce and sexuality into its domestic plot. Reworking the trope of the passionate Creole into the manageable figure of domestic husband, the sentimental script diffuses sexual danger and endorses patriarchy. Chapter three analyzes one of the scant travelogues written by a woman in the eighteenth century. Anna Maria Falconbridge's Narrative of Two Voyages to the River Sierra Leone challenges stereotypes of women that had become fundamental to empire by opening the domestic to exploration. In examining images of disease and representations of women in colonial contexts, I demonstrate that the connections between colonialism and domesticity in women's travel writing reorganized colonial discourse written by men. Chapter four argues that Austen's Mansfield Park represents class and race-mixing as dangerous excesses that threaten the ordered English countryside. Like many contemporary texts, Austen's novel views the relationship between female sexuality and labor as a way to define cultural (and moral) difference. Fanny Price and Edmund Bertram's marriage is an endorsement of patriarchal and imperial values based upon an ideology that fears the contaminating vices of cultural others whose difference is determined by the kinds of labor women perform.

Salisbury, Annika. "Martha's Unhomely Quest for the Homely : A Postcolonial Reading of the Protagonist Martha in Doris Lessing's Martha Quest." Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för språk, litteratur och interkultur (from 2013), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-70857.

Full text
Abstract:
The protagonist Martha in Doris Lessing’s Martha Quest is born to white British settler parents and grows up in a British colony in southern Africa in the 1930s. Although officially the coloniser rather than the colonised, Martha tries to reject this role mentally, verbally, and physically. This essay aims to show that a postcolonial reading of Martha in relation to the colonial context helps in understanding her double consciousness and, more specifically, her inability to find a real or lasting sense of home. Using Homi Bhabha’s concept of unhomeliness, the essay argues that Martha does not truly feel at home anywhere, because the “unhomely” always disturbs the “homely.” Through close reading of the text, it shows how Martha tries to find a sense of home in four areas of her life: her physical home, nature, her body, and her mind. This essay finds that despite Martha’s efforts in moving from her family home to rented accommodation, from the bush to the city, from girlhood to womanhood, and from her individual thoughts to the solidarity of others, she still does not feel at home anywhere. Whenever she starts to feel comfortable in a place or situation, unhomely moments, such as reminders of her nationality, race, or class, always disturb the homely feelings of belonging. Ultimately, Martha cannot escape her unhomeliness.

Through the view of lay members, priests and researchers in communication, liturgy and homily, we will seek to present subsidies about the relationship among homily, communication and religion. Initially, we defend the hypothesis that the sermon can be seen as an archaic, tiring and inefficient speech, also poor in communicative elements, mainly in aspects of oratory. The scientific methodology was developed with base in a holistic, qualitative and quantitative perspective. We verified, through the investigation that the homily is still space for construction and re-construction of ethos and world vision. The priest s speech during the homily is still considered effective for great part of the lay members; however, for the priests this efficacy is relative; it depends on a series of factors. These factors will be evidenced in the first chapter, in which we will demonstrate the epistemological categories that appeared in the empiric research. We will verify that the religion has an enormous persuasive power through their symbols, rites and ideologies. In the second chapter, we will know the homily through the eye of the Apostolic Roman Catholic Church. In the third chapter, we will show the phenomenon of the communication and their interfaces: from the language to the aesthetics of the public speaking. In the conclusion, we will demonstrate some aspects that justify the non corroboration of our hypothesis. We explain that the symbolic power is the key word so that the homiletic speech is considered effective on the part of the followers that legitimate it for the faith.

So some specific objectives were established, just as to analyze the social and spatial trajectory of the families from the Rio Claro P.A. in the previous phases to the constitution of this setting: the previous phase to the land battle; to understand how the constitution of the P.A. was realized, and to verify which were the influences of the social and spatial trajectories of the families in the social and productive organization of the setting. These trajectories were divided in three phases, the previous phase to the entering into the land battle, which gives the basis for the first part of the work; the phase of the battle for land, which gives basis the second part; and finally the present phase of their social and spatial trajectories, as seat people, constituting the third part. According to these objectives, we took bold of the following methodological instruments which permitted the development of this study: bibliographic and documental research through the data supplied by the Sindicato dos Trabalhadores Rurais de Jataí (Jataí Rural Labor Union) and the DATALUTA data bank, which permitted the secondary data collection; field research, with the use , as instruments of data collection, of a form with closed and open questions and a semi organized interview, which propitiated the collection of the primary data. In the form we obtained the participation of 17 families who compose the Rio Claro setting, in a total of 19 people. 10 families participated in the interview, totalizing 13 researched people. After realizing this study it was possible to conclude that, to research the social and spatial trajectories from the components of the P.A. Rio Claro was fundamental to understand the social and productive relationships established in the setting and among people of the researched group, being possible to indentify the origins of the families, the cause they were expropriated from the land, and how they entered into the movement of the land battle and how they created the setting which nowadays guarantees them the production of their ways of life, through the work in the conquered peace of land .

The genome of all organisms is subject to injuries that can be caused by endogenous and environmental factors. If these lesions are not corrected, it can be fixed generating a mutation which can be lethal to the organisms. In order to prevent this, there are different DNA repair mechanisms. These mechanisms are well known in bacteria, yeast, human, but not in plants. Two plant models Oriza sativa and Arabidopsis thaliana had the genome sequenced and due to this some DNA repair genes have been characterized. The aim of this work is to characterized two sugarcane cDNAs that had homology to AP endonuclease: scARP1 and scARP3. In silico has been done with these two sequences and other from plants. It has been observed domain conservation on these sequences, but the cystein at 65 position that is a characteristic from the redox domain in APE1 protein was not so conservated in plants. Phylogenetic relationship showed two branches, one branch with dicots and monocots sequence and the other branch with only monocots sequences. Another approach in order to characterized these two cDNAs was to construct overexpression cassettes (sense and antisense orientation) using the 35S promoter. After that, these cassettes were transferred to the binary vector pPZP211. Furthermore, previously in the laboratory was obtained a plant from nicotiana tabacum containing the overexpression cassette in anti-sense orientation. It has been observed that this plant had a slow development and problems in setting seeds. After some manual crossing, some seeds were obtained (T2) and it was analyzed the T2 segregation. The third approach used in this work was to clone the promoter region from these two cDNAs by PCR walking. The sequences obtained were analyzed using the program PLANTCARE. It was observed in these sequences some motives that may be related to oxidative stress response

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to reflect on homiletics and Christian preaching in the context of Latin America, in the current times of transition. In order to provide a better understanding of the approach, initially aspects of the Latin American religious and cultural context will be analyzed. Then there will be considerations on aspects of the development of Christian preaching, creating a space to think about the relationship between Christian preaching and theologies that are relevant to the context, such as liberation theology. Finally a few challenges to Christian preaching in times of transition will be pointed out. Due to the delimitation of the article, it will focus on the homiletic development of the historical Protestant churches on the continent, above all in the Brazilian context.

In this paper, a brief overview is given of two research projects that were done in South Africa during 1987 (a particularly difficult time under apartheid), and 1994 (the year that the first democratic elections took place), respectively. Some of the findings are discussed under the keywords: silence, transition, reservation, new vision. Reference is made to a historic sermon preached by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town only three days before the first democratic elections were held in South Africa on the 27th of April, 1994. The paper concludes with a reflection on an artwork by the South African artist, Willie Bester.

Abstract:
In this article, I present insights from an empirical study of a congregation which consists of a medley of refugees from the Middle East who have recently converted from Islam and ethnic Danes whose families have belonged to the Lutheran Church for generations. The empirical material is analyzed in light of Søren Kierkegaard’s category of repetition, in the sense of receiving anew, because this phenomenon appears crucial, not only to the genre of preaching but to preachers and listeners alike – especially, in times and situations of transition. I suggest that the Kierkegaardian notion of repetition may be useful as a homiletical category with regard of scholars’ method, preachers’ preparation and listeners’ appropriation of preaching.

Abstract:
A preacher’s spirituality of time may seem like a peripheral issue, but this realm is one where much is at stake. In this article I argue that the preacher’s approach to time scaffolds the overall endeavor. I begin by considering the church’s unique position in time, arguing that the church is fundamentally an event or a happening rather than an institution. Then, I explore ways preaching can foreground the church’s identity as an event. After describing preaching as the narration of a theological moment in the church’s life, I turn to practical implications. In addition to homileticians, my primary interlocutors for this piece include two renowned spirituality scholars, Evelyn Underhill and Abraham Joshua Heschel. I conclude that ecclesiology, pneumatology, and performance are all profoundly shaped by a preacher’s appreciation for the holiness of time.

We believe that the claimant may make use of reason and emotion in order to persuade the interlocutor. Therefore, in this work we intend to identify, analyze and compare the discourse strategies within two religious celebrations, a Mass (Homily) and a worship of the Church Assembly of God (Evangelization), aiming at the argumentation through reason (logos) and the argumentation through emotion (pathos). In the field of reason, we will investigate the delocutive, allocutionary and illocutionary modalities; the reasoning modes; the discourse proceedings; the nomination; the qualification; the identities; the narrator s statutes and point of views. In the area of emotion, we will investigate the tone of voice, the lexical selection; the inversions; the exclamations; the interjections; the metaphorical expressions as well as the three modalities afore mentioned. At the end of the work, we noticed that few are the differences between the Homily and the Evangelization concerning reason. However, the preacher appeals greatly to emotion. Thus, the preacher, besides using reason, also uses emotion more intensively than the Father, which seems to make the believer more willing to accept his thesis, generating a higher capture of new believers.
