Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to reflect on homiletics and Christian preaching in the context of Latin America, in the current times of transition. In order to provide a better understanding of the approach, initially aspects of the Latin American religious and cultural context will be analyzed. Then there will be considerations on aspects of the development of Christian preaching, creating a space to think about the relationship between Christian preaching and theologies that are relevant to the context, such as liberation theology. Finally a few challenges to Christian preaching in times of transition will be pointed out. Due to the delimitation of the article, it will focus on the homiletic development of the historical Protestant churches on the continent, above all in the Brazilian context.

Abstract:
The article presents examples for the table metaphor (the table spiritual) in the Didactic Gospels by Constantinе of Preslav (Učitelno evangelie). Its prototype can be found in two homilies by Gregory of Nazianzus and Hexameron by John Chrysostom, but gradually it is widely spread and used as an art motive in the Christian homiletic literature. To follow strictly the set example of the early Christian Great Fathers in the compilations of sermons is proclaimed, established and put into effect according to the Rule 19 of the decisions of The Sixth Ecumenical Council (The Trullan Council). Archbishop Constantinе “incrustrates” in the Didactic Gospels the metaphor for the spiritual table, following the art examples of the oratory eloquence of the fathers of the Church.

Abstract:
John Chrysostom’s homiletic series De statuis (CPG 4330), addressed to the people of Antioch, is known in several Slavic versions whose linguistic features and relationships have not been sufficiently explored. The present article discusses the two complete South Slavic translations – P (presumably from Preslav), which is preserved in Russian manuscripts from the 16th-17th centuries, and the hitherto unexplored version A in a manuscript written by Vladislav Gramatik RM 3/6, 1473, which was translated by a Serbian monk on Mount Athos, according to the colophon. The aim of the study is to highlight some archaic linguistic features of the Preslav translation P (vocabulary, morphology, and syntax) and to compare it with translation A with the help of five unpublished Greek copies. As a result of the study, it can be argued that P and A are two separate complete translations of De statuis corresponding to different Greek versions. However, the Serbian translator of A probably knew the earlier translation P and was occasionally influenced by it.

Abstract:
This paper discusses how to verify hypotheses about the use of a given lexical choice when synonymic pairs of archaisms and preslavisms (and their different readings) occur in manuscripts of both direct and indirect traditions of the Didactic Gospel [DG] of Constantine of Preslav. Using three synonymous pairs as examples (тъкъмо/тъѭ, постт/алъкат, пастꙑрь/ пастѹхъ), the paper illustrates the potential of lexicological and textual analysis (identifying the frequency and distribution of synonymic pairs in the text, examining their semantic differences, and analyzing the different readings in textual transmission). The work highlights how the existence of synonymic pairs often influences a priori assumptions in discussions concerning the unique characteristics of the homiletic collection, leading to the identification of geographical and temporal markers of the Preslav redaction in the text. Finally, the work shows that Constantine of Preslav’s Didactic Gospel reflects the transitional nature of late 9th century Bulgaria, marked by the Christianization of Slavic communities – a period and a text where written and spoken language, the language used in liturgical, homiletical, and intra-church communication coexist, despite their different norms.

Abstract:
In the contribution, the main focus is on the comparison of the Gospel quotations in the Old Church Slavonic translation of Gregory the Great's Homilies on the Gospels (i. e. Besědy) and in the author's parts of Constantine of Preslav’s Didactic Gospel. A total of 15 common citations were found, of which 10 could be further analyzed. Based on the comparison, we came to the conclusion that most of these quotations are in the Didactic Gospel in the wording of the Old Church Slavonic Gospel translation, but in half of the cases it is a match with the manuscripts of the Preslav redaction or further development of the oldest redaction of the Old Church Slavonic Gospel translation. In eight quotations from the Besědy, the translator's familiarity with the Old Church Slavonic translation of the Gospel can be observed, while half of them are verses well known even to ordinary Christians. In some cases, we observe interesting identical variants in the Didactic Gospel and in the Besědy, which are either found in the Gospel manuscripts of younger redactions, or are not documented in them at all.

Abstract:
In OCS studies Constantine of Preslav was for a long time known as a translator/compilator of prose texts above all and as the author of the Alphabet Prayer, but today his hymnology attracts more attention. This is due to several acrostics containing his name, rediscovered and published by scholars only recently. A full-fledged appreciation of his work demands bringing together the analyses of his prose and his hymnology. In addition it is necessary to add his acrostics as texts in their own right. This is attempted in the article on the basis of G. Popov’s research, special attention being paid to the two acrostics that actually form poetic texts, written in the tradition of Byzantine dodecasyllable poetry.

Abstract:
It is well known that there are several factors that we need to keep in mind when studying the lexical features of the works compiled and translated by Constantine of Preslav. First, editions of his texts have appeared only recently, and indices or dictionaries are still being prepared. Second, the characteristics of Constantine’s language combine three lines: on the one hand, it is quite conservative, as would be characteristic of a Methodius disciple trained in Moravia. On the other hand, although rarely, there is layering characteristic of Old Bulgarian texts created in Preslav or in centers influenced by Preslav. Thirdly, several characteristic very rare words are traced in his works, which could be part of the author’s idiolect. The purpose of the article is to identify and analyze of lexemes from the second group. In view of the above, these are preliminary observations, limited by material at disposal at the present time. Selected lexemes, which find a parallel in translated works from the 9th and 10th centuries of East Bulgarian origin, are examined. The features selected and their analysis could be used in future to answer the question of whether and how the environment in which Constantine worked influenced his lexical choice.

Abstract:
In this paper the research showed that apart from Didactic Gospel more writings depend on Byzantine catenae. Of the few Slavic texts found, the sermon on the Nativity of John the Baptist was thoroughly analysed. The translation is rich and varied, respecting the target Slavic language. The lexicon of the Homily is very ancient, which is supported by rare words (иночѧдъ) and loanings from Greek (продромъ). Some ancient forms could be reconstructed: сѧтъ and роꙁьство, phonetically related to the Slavic West. Three homilies from Clozianus codex (on Palm Sunday, on Maundy Thursday and on Good Friday) show similar linguistic characteristics. The translation could be dated in the late 9th century, perhaps even earlier than the Didactic Gospel.

Abstract:
The paper examines how personal names (including compound anthroponyms and nicknames that have acquired the meaning of proper nouns) are related to citation and construction of intertextual relations in Constantine of Preslav’s Didactic Gospel. Various contexts are observed, which illustrate the use of such nouns: in referring to biblical and patristic texts, in denoting an author evangelist or his interpreter, and in activating important episodes of the Holy Scripture in the minds of the perceivers. References to biblical and patristic texts are provided that have not been noted or commented so far in the scholarship on this lectionary-based collection of commentaries. The main conclusion is that, when creating the first Old Bulgarian preaching collection, Constantine of Preslav did not just translate but also compiled and commented with the confidence of an erudite man of letters, and that his addressees, though converts, were well prepared theologically.

Abstract:
This contribution is meant to once again take a closer look at the purported textual relationship between the Adhortatio ad poenitentiam, i.e. the second Freising text and Kliment of Ohrid’s homily for martyrs and apostles. It has been argued that the second Freising text derives at least in part from this homily or from some unidentified common model. This assumption is based on partial textual parallels between both texts. With the exception of Jagić (1905), the validity of the parallels in question has been intuitively taken for granted without ever subjecting them to a scrutiny on principled grounds. Our task in this paper is to assess how far the parallels are capable to support any claims of a shared textual history of the texts under investigation. In doing so, we shall not restrict ourselves to give an estimate of the actual closeness of both texts, but we shall also provide a broader assessment of their possible mutual relationship taking into account aspects of genre and missionary practice.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the Slavonic reception of Isidore of Pelusium, which has been commonly regarded as one of the most neglected aspects of the medieval reception of this patristic author. The starting point of this article is a recent discovery that a passage of the thirty-fifth homily in Constantine of Preslav’s Didactic Gospel corresponds to a letter by Isidore of Pelusium. The present study proves that the corresponding Greek text of this passage belongs to a particular Isidorian letter, which is distributed not only in the Greek catenae manuscripts, used by Constantine of Preslav for the composition of his Didactic Gospel, but also as a separate letter in his epistolary corpus (lib. IV, ep. 123/ ep. 1959). In this way, the article reveals some new aspects of the Slavonic reception of Isidore of Pelusium.
