Full textThis document systematizes the various links between men and reproductive behaviour, reflecting on what the categories of gender, power and reproductive rights contribute to the analysis of these relations. The document shows how men's reproductive behaviour has been constructed as an object of study as well as pointing out some theoretical dilemmas, political implications and methodological needs identified in the process of analyzing the men-reproductive behaviour pairing. The document includes proposals for more integral categories in order to reconstruct the environment of reproduction, without restricting it to a specialization of the female population. Its constructs an analytical framework for the study of reproduction in men's experience. The document ends by highlighting the ethical and political commitments of socio-demographic research to reviewing its own objects of study

Full textThe idea of collective memory is present throughout the work, which follows the concept of urban identity. This concept emphasizes that the monuments provide an overview of the urban landscape of the city. Collective memory is a process that occurs continuously, a process of restructuring and providing emotional and moral support for the political power. It is a model that reflects the aspirations of a society. Building on the study of collective memory by the perspective of public monument honoring the politicians, we try to describe the way the politics seek to implement the development of a vision of its own identity. The monuments dedicated to political figures reflect the realities and ambiguities that are at the base of the memory of a nation, as well as the complex relationship between politics and the imaginary. What we have proposed is a history of statuary in Bucharest, from the first statue erected in 1869 until today, we refer to public monuments dedicated to politicians and historical figures. We chose a chronological approach because we find it interesting how the statuary in Bucharest reflects the political upheavals. The story of the monumental art of Bucharest is actually a history of the political failures; by monumental art we examine in particular the changes that occur in politics, changes that are reflected in art

Full textHomosociality, homosexuality and heterosexuality are mutually structured domains. In order to identify the components of masculinity, their interaction is analysed from the point of view of gender relations, through sexual body technologies, emotions, concept of the person and the self among men. The thesis confirms that body perceptions, sexual practices, and emotions far from being natural and pre-existing society and thought, are socially constructed in relationship with male domination. Men use to their own benefit the assumption of their naturality, an assumption which becomes astrategic support in the game of power they play with women ; they also use it to proceed to transgressive sexual practices which remain out of sanction. The role of sexuality appears then as inherent to the relations of power at all levels of society. This explains why modifications in sexual practices and representations go along with economic and social change, making clear the correlation that exists between sexual prestige and prestige emerging from all the other spheres of social life

Full textThe brotherhoods of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos flourished in Brazil during the slavery period. They were of great interest for African people and their descendants. In spite of being characterized by the imposition of Catholic cults, these lay-led associations revealed as a means for group socialization and identity construction. In this way, such brotherhoods became a space through which black people could produce an alternative form of existence in the world. While at times they were led to accept the religion of their slavery masters, at times they embodied cultural symbols which connected them to the societies from which they had been removed. This ambiguity is perhaps one of the most visible features of this type of brotherhoods. I explore these issues in my study about the brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos, which was established by slaves of Angolan origin in Quixeramobim, in the back-lands of Ceará, Brazil, around the year of 1755. Throughout the period of two centuries, the idea of Angolan origin has not been claimed as a central idea in the foundation and continuity of this brotherhood. Yet, it emerges in the notion of group of origin. While doing an ethnographic description of the processes involved in the making of this brotherhood, here I also introduce the concept of identity. Through my dialog with the descendants of the old members of this association I attempt to recuperate the memory of its main form of sociability: the feast of Nossa Senhora do Rosário

Full textA two-fold investigation, namely: an historical research based on findings during the 18th and 19th centuries, and a contemporary research (30 individual interviews in 1997 with members of the freemasonry) formed the ground-work for a psychological analysis of the male-female relationships in freemasonry, a progressive, initiatory society. Elements stemming from the 18th and 19th centuries reveal a perceptible picture of institutional oppositions and social representations regarding the admission of women to freemasonry. In 1997, with the use of the clinical approach, the freemason subject with which the woman in a masonic lodge is sometimes confronted, remains in the foreground. The psychoanalytical interpretation of the physical being allows one to extend the psychosocial male-female sphere in order to focus on the feminine in her double reference to the man and to the woman ; and also, to grasp how the man-woman relationship in its initiatory complicity with the masculine-feminine relationship weakens the narcissism, blurs the identity and renews the psychological bisexuality. Collective and individual difficulties are expressed which in turn reveal the resistance to change and the opposition between that which is identical and that which is different. In other words, the elements of a problematical solution of a particular social reality, where the complexity of bonds uniting the majority-minority relations with the masculine-feminine is formulated

Are they following the evolution of Algerian society or, on the contrary, are they continuing to show a traditional picture, in opposition to the society changes ? These are the questions dealed with in this study which gives you information about the way the social representations are developed and passed down within the school context. Women are under-represented and often showed in demeaning position and limited roles. The usual stereotype, it is the traditionnal model, the woman responsible for family and domestic tasks with her daughter as assistant. A traditional perception which confine women to their wife and mother role. In the minority, they remain reduced to their private and family roles, despite some occasions when female characters are not showed as mothers. First, are presented the women place in the society, the Algerian educational system and the different approaches adopted to ensure the education efficiency, the girls' in particular. Then, is entered the analysis of the school reading textbook in order to have a better view on its conception realization and content. Full textBodybuilding is one of the contemporary forms of body transformation and shaping - literally of body construction - which lies within the most spectacular. The acute work out for muscles immediately evokes masculinity, on a hyperbolic mode, but not without contradictions: because those hypertrophied bodies don’t have any other goal but esthetical, breaking up with the common logic of sports that implies as a matter of fact the accomplishment of a performance. Within this sport-show, the ideal body suggested by bodybuilding – combining the triadic criteria of volume, definition and symmetry – is reached by a meticulous and fragmented work out of each muscular group, and a real daily disciplinary arrangement, close to asceticism. Our work intends to question the ambiguities and contradictions raised by the practice of bodybuilding in the light of corporal and gender identity. First, we will study how male and female bodybuilders picture a gender definition of themselves and the perception they have of masculine and feminine groups, compared to individuals that do not have this practice. Afterwards, on the basis of the primacy question of appearance within the conception of the self, our interest grew for the self-objectification constructions: the tendency to favor physical and esthetical attributes at the expense of functional attributes, the appearance monitoring and the physical shame. The results of the quantitative and qualitative axis highlight the corporal identity specific to bodybuilders’ group, particularly marked by the objectification, as well as a gender identity also specific, going with a foster masculine description, but not less feminine. Within the bodybuilders’ group, a few measuring differences gender-related seem to disappear; the qualitative data suggesting also a homogenization of the mindsets (in particular, the asexual character of the muscle) between male and female bodybuilders. These components are, to conclude, discussed in the light of the social identity theory and most particularly self-categorization theory

Full textThe province of Quebec receives the second largest number of immigrants each year within Canada. It seems that emigrating from an under developed country to a developed country increases women's feelings of self-sufficiency and will lead to a positive attitude toward gender equality. The main focus of this study was to evaluate if immigrating to Quebec has had an influence on women’s perceptions of gender equality. In order to achieve this goal, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with eleven immigrant women from eight different countries, now living in Quebec. Questions on their perceptions toward gender, self-sufficiency and gender equality were asked. Constructivist paradigm has oriented the methodology and the data analysis was based on postmodernism feminist theory. Results suggest that gender equality is influenced by the immigration to Quebec and some of the factors of influence were pointed out by the participants. Orientations for further research are shown in the conclusion.

Full textThe activity of driving is marked by numerous sex differences, especially with regard to behaviour and road accidents. The present doctoral research aims at understanding the role of sex stereotypes specific to driving in explaining these differences. Therefore, the objective of the research work is to analyse the impact of sex stereotypes associated with driving (SSAD) on self-reported or actual behaviour on a task relating to driving. The analysis will take into account the psycho-social factors likely to influence this impact, and will also study the impact of the context on those relationships due to the deterrent effect of the stereotype. This doctoral work thus shows that adherence to SSAD has an impact on self-reported driving behaviour; for example, whatever the sex, adherence to SSAD associated to sex is linked to more frequent reporting of typical driving behaviour for this sex. Moreover, the research highlights the fact that the protective factor of violation behaviour is, among men, the adoption of feminine values, and, among women, a sense of competence as a driver. Finally, this research work shows that those stereotypes come into play in actual behaviour when it comes down to carrynig out a task relating to driving, but that the effects are different depending on the instructions (whether threatening or not) and the tasks to be carried out. As a conclusion, this doctoral research indicates that the different driving behaviours are not only due to differences in sex natural abilities, but they can also be explained by socially constructed cultural beliefs relating to driving sex differences

Full textThe process of academizing the training for Physical Education (PE) teachers was completed with the French Act of July 16, 1984 on the organisation and promotion of sports and physical exercises, (Savary’s Act) which established the UFR STAPS. However, the first mixed competitive exam to qualify as a PE teacher was only set up a few years later, during the 1989 session. As we took into account these elements, we thought it would be interesting to question two samples of PE teachers. On the one hand, we examined PE teachers who were in CREPS, in IREPS or in UEREPS before 1975 and, on the other hand, we questioned those who benefited from a university degree, in STAPS followed by professional training in IUFM after 1989. In other words, we collected the testimonies of PE teachers who benefited from two very different trainings: before and after the creation of faculties dedicated to Sports and Exercise sciences in France. Moreover, as the old training system was sex based and as the new training scheme is mixed-sex, we felt that it was necessary to question a sample of professionals while considering the gender parity factor. Therefore, the professional identity construction, according to the view of Belkaïd (1999), is interesting to consider. Through the analysis of professional life stories, our approach is both qualitative and comparative, and, in addition to “reconstruct career paths, which led, at different times, individuals to take up PE teaching career” (Michon et Caritey, 1998), our aim is to reveal distinctive features of the professional identity of PE teachers at a specific period. Our goal is thus to ask the following question: is it the same job?

Full textThis research deals with the history of imaginaires identitaires in Colombia, particulary in the Antioquia region as seen though the texts and images that the intellectual elites, mostly located in Medellin, produced between 1830 and 1920. We have discovered the constant presence of an identity discourse which strongly emphasized "the Antioqueña race". We propose a research which does not overlook the relationship between the local, global, regional, national and international dimensions. That is why we have focused on the intellectual formation of the elites taught us that the idea of nation was not overwhelmingly present. They led us to think that the idea of region may sometimes be more powerful. In fact, the cities appear as the concrete worlds in the name of which men and women build their history. Therefore, we came to the conclusion that, for the elites of the nineteenth century, the material "progress" of the cities and the "civilizing processes" of everyday life were more important than the formation of what was known as national states. Consequently, a certain common structure linked the cities concerned to the "civilizing project". But one can also speak a long history of exchanged glances and contacts which developed according to the comings and goings of tastes, practices, ideas and of the people of Euroamerica who were attached to the great ideal of the nineteenth century : having a powerful imaginaire identitaire, which is one of the most crucial components of this idea of "progress and civilisation"

Full textThis research is based on the following question : to what extent do masculine, feminine categories represent the underpinnings of seductive heterosexual behavior here and now ? This study is intended to help understand the complexity of seduction by focusing on the field of feminist research. In the first part of this work we will describe our methods ; the following two sections will use this methodology to answer our questions. The second part will show the development of the seductive image. We will explore general images formed by our society in order to show how modern heterosexual seduction may be influenced and even sometimes determined by the myths, legends and literature that tend to follow our gender system. In our analysis of myths, legends and literature we will meet emblematic figures of seduction, and in the final part of our study we will see how their images and representations as conveyed by our contemporary society and the representations of the seductive individuals - men and women - are present in our real lives. We often hear about supposed changes, transformations of sexual-determined roles and equality. In contradiction, our analysis supports scientific points of view that continue to reveal often invisible evidence of the same androcentric system

Full textHow did the Romantic generation receive gender representations? How were these representations linked to practices? Indeed, sex roles and the division between the sexes seemed to be questioned by the Romantic generation. Was it only a matter of style or did it testify of a real malaise? The masculinity crisis, which was clearly apparent at the end of the XIXth century, emerged after the French Revolution. Is it possible to say that more than a masculinity crisis, it was a gender crisis that emerged at the beginning of the century? These hypotheses are at the core of this work, which confronts men and women to the question of sexual identity in a systematic way

Full textIn the context of a cultural and media convergence, we will address internet culture from the perspective of some of its epistemic forms: hackers, gamers, and geeks. In the latticework of web historiography, these forms relate to each other and to registers of actions and practices which give meaning to online sociability—idea matrices which reify a social world of cultural, technical and social knowledges in a dematerialized space-time continuum. In the tense relation between imagination and reality, agents produce themselves as subjects. Through mobility and motility, identities get adjusted or indexed, or even distance themselves. This is how we can articulate the utopian archetype of the cyborg, into which individuals are disembodied into the machine. But despite ideals of potential development and freedom from the injunctive, coercive, and regulating frameworks of the material world, social issues still do not get resolved. The systems and ways of their reproduction remain numerous. Among these social issues, we take male over-representation as the focus of our study. Structurally resistant to change and to any form of social intervention by exogeneous elements, these reifying online communities reproduce a gender structure in the atavistic manner of the old world, as is described in the sociological concept of the “men's house”. Through an examination of their recurrences and particularities, our theoretical project is, on the one side, to define and identify these communities in order to, in a second step, study their statistical androcentrism. Our approach is that of the ethnography of the virtual, our theoretical frameworks are those of gender sociology, media sociology, and critical sociology

Full textAt the very heart of the 19th century a new pastime based on songs emerged amongst the popular classes. The works which are performed in café-concerts and then in the music-halls are largely concerned with amorous relationships. Written for the most part by men of middle-class origin, they contribute to the cultural construction of sexually-based identities in the imagination of the public at large, without concealing in any way the violence of gender in the process of seduction. During the First World War, the songs give evidence of the blurring of stereotypes within couples confronted by separation and suffering. Once peace is achieved, they try to give a more peaceful image of the rapport between the sexes. Between 1895 and 1939, they reflect the specificity of amorous behaviour in the popular classes, and a part of the public of middle-class origin discovers a greater freedom given to couples and the predominance of amorous sentiments in marriages which are love-matches. Through this medium, the middle-classes attempt to pass on their own behavioural models: between the two wars they offer new representations of the rapport between the sexes which turn away from the stereotypes based on the domination/submission equation. The songs therefore appear as an original way of transmitting values in the construction of gender identity and as a privileged means of exchange between the different social categories of which the public is composed

Full textThis study proposes to analyze queer cinema representations in the 2000s. It focuses on how the male sexual abuse is shown in two films released in 2004, Bad Education (La mala educación), from the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, and Mysterious Skin, from the American director Gregg Araki. Applying ideas from sociologist Michel Dorais, in his 1997 book, Ça arrive aussi aux garçons: l’abus sexuel au masculin, we aim to show how this event significantly influences the identity and the sexual construction of the films’ main characters. More generally, this study places these two directors in the large and rich tradition of queer cinema, which focuses on unconventional desires and sexual identities. The first chapter deals specifically with queer theory main ideas and its various manifestations in cinema, which allows us to bring Almodóvar and Araki together in one study and to emphasize the relevance of this reunion. The second chapter focuses on significant scenes from the movies that show how each director presents male sexual abuse and how this event reflects on the lives of the protagonists. Finally, the last chapter analyses problems of identity and sexual construction in the main characters, to see how sexual abuse has affected them. Coupled with the work of Judith Butler, the queer approach in film studies is therefore adapted in this thesis, in order to emphasize the importance of concepts like genre, sexuality, and the manifestations of desire through the analysis of several scenes from the corpus. Therefore, particularly significant narrative and structural elements, as regards to the representation of male sexual abuse in cinema, will be studied

Full textBelonging to a sex implicates a power relation in which the male sex category is themost dominant. After having presented the principle theories about psychological sex variables, it's in the socicognitive approach that this variable is analysed. The theoretical discussion is oriented towards a conceptualisation of different sexes that is related to social significations and social characteristics inherent in situations of interaction. The type of "insertion subjects" determine (whether or not) the power between sexes. The scholastic institution, by its functioning and goals, by nature, activates the asymmetry power. Three experiments are therefore carried out in order to study the apparition conditions of differences between sexes vis a vis evaluation strategies between groups and also in relation to an scholastic task anticipation, valued differently. The population for the first experiment is one hundred and sixty nine subjects, and three hundred and thirty one for the other two. The general result shows the existence of sex differences in relation to evaluation strategies under certain experimental conditions. The differences of sexes are not static but depend on situational characteristics in which the subjects fin themselves. The degree of social stakes inherent in scholastic situations constitute a differenciation factor between the sexes : the theoretical conclusion is therefore oriented towards a necessity to take into

Full textThis Master’s Dissertation in research-creation splits in two parts: a collection of short fictions and a theoretical essay. Le bleu des garçons regroups twelve fictional stories questioning masculine desire. The texts’ versified form explores the limit between prose and poetry, while the use of various narrative strategies, along with a minimalist style, highlights every situation’s underlying sense and blurs the line between reality and imagination. They might be sons, uncles, lovers, queer men, traitors and travellers, the protagonists of these short fictions still come together as they challenge their identity, their sexuality and their relationship with others in a critical moment condensed in time and space. Ensuing from the creative part’s narratological issues, “Why refuse oneself, tonight, to this supposition?” Imagination and narrative contamination in Marguerite Duras’s Dix heures et demie du soir en été studies this novel’s narrative adherence to the protagonist’s imagination. Our essay analyses how the narration’s gaze and internal focalization are contaminated by the main character’s growing emotion and apprehensions initiated by desire, while assisting the book’s cognitive objective: making passion its central event.

Al-Ban, Alaa Zaher G. "Architecture and cultural identity in the traditional homes of Jeddah." Thesis, University of Colorado at Denver, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10112566.
Full textJeddah, the second largest city in Saudi Arabia, is located on the west coast of the Red Sea in the Hijaz region. Lying between the two holy mosques, Makkah and Madinah, Jeddah is a more liberal and open-minded city compared to the rest of the conservative Sunni Islamic country. As the only stop along the religious tour with easy access by plane and car, Jeddah and its culture, food, architecture, and lifestyle have been greatly impacted due to the trade route and the religious tourism. Importantly, Al- Balad, the historic city center of Jeddah, is architecturally significant, housing numerous traditional Hijazi homes. With the discovery of oil, local attitudes changed and devalued the culture and the history. And these traditional structures took on a precarious position in the developing city: swimming against the current of Western aesthetics, stereotypes, and political influence, the traditional Hijazi home fell out of fashion, and many structures were left neglected. Due to these changing dynamics and the architectural changes it wrought, this doctoral dissertation endeavors to the architecture of the traditional homes of Al-Balad by investigating the complex interaction of cultural identity and space.
In analyzing the architectural details of these residential spaces, deciphering the meaning behind the aesthetics and construction of each architectural element, and considering women’s agency and readings about their traditional lifestyles, religion, and beliefs, this work reveals the hidden gender dynamics within the home, dynamics that are too often ignored or misunderstood, particularly in the West. I argue that the traditional Hijazi home stands as proof of an empowered Saudi woman—but empowered according to a different definition of empowerment, one that challenges Western gender constructs and, instead, incorporates the unique social, religious, and historical context of Jeddah specifically and Saudi Arabia more broadly. Moreover, this dissertation offers a model and methodology for documenting the historic structures in the Hijazi region and promotes the appreciation Saudi culture and history. It fills a gap in current preservation practices for the nation; it aims to provide a foundation for architectural preservation curriculum for schools across Saudi Arabia; it offers a template for documentation practices in order to support, preserve, and understand the history and design of the 19th century Hijazi domestic architecture.
There is a valid need for this work. Currently, a poor archival system, a dearth of literature analyzing Saudi residential architecture, and restrictions and regulations imposed by the Saudi government have led to unique challenges. If this dissertation at times seems to avoid politically charged questions, especially within the context of feminist politics, it does so out of respect to Saudi authorities. Despite such challenges, this dissertation, by returning to Jeddah and deciphering and recording what’s left of its traditional, historic buildings, hopes to initiate a more extensive and unified archiving system and more robust scholarship before an important aspect of Saudi history is lost.

Full textThis thesis analyses gender relations within Komala, the left-wing Kurdish organization that was emerged on the Iranian political scene after the 1979 Revolution. In order to make visible the events peculiar to this historical period, ignored and forgotten both by researchers as well as political and social movements in Iran, the thesis examines gender inequalities within the organization, focusing on women’s political participations and engament. To do so, the thesis draws on the political experiences and life stories of ex-Peshmerga (fighters in Kurdish) gathered through numerous interviews.Analyzing the trajectories of militant Kurdish women in the organization, carried out with the help of gender and feminist studies, makes it possible to observe the inter-articulations and reconfigurations of the sexual division of reproductive labor, the sexual division of revolutionary labor, and sexist representations.According to the results of this thesis, the sexual divisions of labor are reconfigured within the organization through unequal and asymmetrical relations between men and women. Whereas Kurdish women were socially confined to the domestic space until the 1979 Revolution, they played a new and active role as Peshmerga in the political sphere which, nonetheless, was not easily accessible to and feasible for them. To enter political life, in particular armed struggle, women had to encounter various obstacles, including masculinity and the difficulties involved in the creation of ‘non-mixed’ spaces. Although the organization has considered itself ‘revolutionary’ and ‘avant-garde’ on gender norms, and despite women’s efforts to modify those norms, Komala remains structured by the sexual division of labor in the context of armed struggle

Full textOur thesis focuses on communication combatting violence against women, and especially on plans mobilizing gender diversion. In addition, these plans integrate men (in the camera range) and include them in the target audience. These violences are acts of men as men who target women as women. They are a social and collective phenomenon. These violences are considered via the prism of women. Gender diversion refers to disturbances of socially constructed relationships, norms or representations of women and men, female and male. We seek to a better understanding of the gender diversion concept. Considering the communication mobilizing gender diversion as a form of human and social interactions, three areas for improvment emerge: the study of gender diversion forms through their plans (their creations); the empirical study of creation, the creative processes and the producers’ intentions of influence with such plans (the creatives) ; the empirical study of the reception, reception processes and influence in reception, namely on publics made up of social subjects.First, an analysis of heterogeneous gender diversion plans, allows to identify their multiple forms that illustrate the gender hypertextuality and violence. Secondly, semi-structured and explicitation interviews with creatives allow the study of gender diversion creation. Thirdly, we are looking at the gender diversion reception (focus groups and quasi experiment)

Full textThe historiographic trace of the indigenous towns of the Chaco's area is organized in logical but discontinuous strata of etnonymes. These srata translate the state, in a particular moment, from field of relationships and interethnic mediations. Through analysis of different strata and hiatus that separate them, I try to explain the organization an the evolution of indian mediations in the boreal Chaco. This demostration is supported in the Ishir (Chamacoco) case. The analysis, based on ethnographic files and archives, proves that this group cannot be studied independently of the mediation structures that register it in an interethnic sociological continuum : the analysis of the consecutive etnonymic strata makes it possible to understand how those mediations have been organized in the time

Full textIn addition to his cinematographic activities, Jean Renoir was a very prolific and versatile writer, havingauthored several novels and plays, as well as many articles and autobiographical texts. To this collection ofwritings one can add his correspondence, which developed during Renoir's exile in the United States duringWorld War II. This correspondence is readily used as a documentary resource that helps to shed light on the lifeand career of the filmmaker, but seldom has it been considered in its own right. It is essential to consider a letternot only as a document but as a discourse, a text. If on the one hand Renoir's letters reveal information aboutthe making of certain films, the rhetoric at work could help reinterpret the history of cinematographic genesis. What is at stake in this correspondence turns out to be less genetic than autobiographical. Renoir uses letters torelate the identity upheaval born out of a situation of exile and to demonstrate his artistic identity. In doing sohe shatters the myth of the Author, created in the fifties and to which he had himself publicly contributed. Onan epistolary level, Renoir sees himself as an honest man, in the way it was understood in the classical period. He uses letters as a way to prove his sociability through the mastery of the art of pleasing. His desire to pleaseincites him to experiment with stances likely to generate his correspondent's assent. Before using letters as abiographical resource, the reader must put back into perspective this rhetoric of the honest man according toRenoir

Full textTraditionally, women used to play an important role in the domestic area. Due to colonization, Native women have lost their status and are not part of the decision making process of their homes. Despite that, Native women have continued to play a special role in fostering a sense of identity in their communities. It is therefore important to involve them in housing projects in order to find designs more adapted to the needs of their families.
The case study took place in Chisasibi, a Cree village at the North of James Bay, which has been relocated 17 years ago, and been living in fully equipped houses based on western designs. This thesis aimed at revealing the opinion of Native women about their domestic environment and collect their suggestions for future improvements. The results showed that Native families' lifestyles have become more and more diversified: some want to incorporate traditional behavior patterns, other on the contrary, are more inclined in living the western way. Of course age and social background play an important role in their opinions. Still, the major critic concerns the inappropriate designs, the lack of space and storage which tend to influence the way people use the space in the house. The thesis pointed out the importance of defining housing layouts in accordance to the Native families' choices and sense of identity.

It explores the notion of wellness within the nursing home context and puts forward suggestions for promoting wellness in the nursing home. The study also makes a significant contribution to the discipline of occupational science and the application of heuristic inquiry to social research.

Full textThis doctoral dissertation aims participating in building knowledge on the masculine consumption, a topic that was neglected in consumer research until very recently. Through the Consumer Culture Theory lens, it proposes an investigation of this phenomenon both from brand (producer) and male (consumer) perspectives. The essays progress from public to private discourses on masculinity, combining macro and micro levels of analysis to unpack evolving gender ideologies and consumption.Through a socio-historic perspective, the first essay shows how the masculine identity is evolving from monolith masculinity to contemporary masculinities. The research aims to understand if and how these new cultural values are transferred to brands communication. Using a semiotic approach, masculine archetypes, their values and relationships are underlined by using a Utilitarian vs. Aesthetic semantic axis. A corpus of twenty brands communication of masculine and feminine sectors is analyzed with a past/present perspective. The study reveals an evolution of men’s representations in brands communication. The theoretical implications of the findings are discussed, theorizing especially the metrosexual managerial phenomenon. The second essay investigates male consumers representations and rituals as regard a new and highly feminine inspired product category: men’s lingerie. The process of discovery, entrance and involvement in this consumption is deciphered, the influencers’ roles highlighted and the interactions within the heterosexual couples emphasized. Doing so, the paper participates in building knowledge on the masculine consumption by describing male engagement in “anomic” consumption. It also introduces the concept of intimacy as a marker in the shift in9the masculine identity and proposes four dimensions of this concept as they emerged from consumers’ discourses. Finally the third essay attempts to explore how a new masculine consumption – men’s lingerie- that had clear divisions between men and women, may shape and reinforce men’s socially defined gender roles/identity construction. The author focuses on new identity landmarks, which move the social frontier between the sexes. First, the interactions in- between the male peers are emphasized as a window for the masculine identity construction through consumption. Secondly, the deep contradictions and the negotiations of acceptable masculine norms as expressed by the respondents are interpreted. Finally, the results are located in a macro-level of analysis allowing accounting for the role of the social forces in shaping masculine norms and French masculine schemes compared to the American masculinities described by Holt and Thompson (2004)

Full textThis work is based on ethnography of experience of men with multiple sexual identities. In doing so, this work aims to articulate analysis of the socio-political context in which articulates the experience of homosexuality in Senegal than the regular ones discussed in this volume. The analysis of speech, writing and violence underlines the need to put the controversy over homosexuality in a broader political and historical context. The controversy over homosexuality in the public space is particularly related to colonial past, but also to the present context of contemporary Senegal. The backlashes against homosexuality since 2008 attest to the difficulty encountered men live an unorthodox sexuality and the existence of multiple sexual identities. These multiple realities must be understood as a result of representations made on sexual practices among men and the illegitimacy of these practices present in several sectors of Senegalese society. This logical concealment update problem that confronts a targeted prevention towards those named in the context of AIDS MSM [Men who have sex with men]. Different forms of violence and social inequality in which inserts the experiences of men with multiple sexual identities tell us about their relationship to sex (with men and women) and disease. In addition, ethnographic analysis can account for the multiplicity of experiences regarding homosexuality. It reveals varying degrees of knowledge and recognition of homosexuality in Senegal. This allows considering jointly experience of contempt and violence on one hand and forms of social recognition on the other

Full textThis research focuses on the presence of men in Nursing and tries to find out who they are and what they want to be, both personally and professionally. The life stories and projects of four subjects who graduated in the last three decades, plus the ones of a male student who is currently at the university, were analysed. The qualitative methodology was used and we have tried to reveal the noticeable and/or emergent identity policies in this reality, as well as the emancipatory possibilities. The studies of Ciampa and Habermas were used as theoretical references. Through the categorization of four life stories and going deeper in the analyses of the individual subject in the fifth story, who was considered emblematic, we have concluded that these male nurses have studied Nursing either by their own option or influenced by the family, besides considering Nursing as a feasible job possibility. They have embodied provider characters showing the re-position of this character in building their identity. They consolidate the ideology of knowing in order to command, reinforcing the power of hegemony groups in the health care institutions. They believe their admission to the profession will contribute to the social recognition they desire, reinforcing efficiency, professionalism, scientificity ideologies, the ugly duckling in relation to doctors category, experiencing the character super nurses supermen which, likewise, has been affecting women in Nursing for over a century as super nurses superwomen . They are part of the assistance model that attends the technicist market, without innovative projects neither for their working environment nor for collective attitudes in search of changes. We believe that the overcoming of the conflicts pointed out in this study may happen gradually, intersubjectively and objectively, making it real in conquering space and power, together with self reflection for conscientious choices, always in search of the understanding in social relationships. We think it is vital to discuss beyond scientificity, competence, gender or power. It is necessary a progressive and ongoing negotiation based on ethics and moral; an identity policy to face technicist paradigms, which are dominant and dehumanizing, both for the patients as well as for the health care agents in this context
