The objective was to evaluate the vigor of corn seeds treated with homeopathic solutions. The experiments were done at the Laboratory of Soybean Breeding DFT/UFV. The homeopathic medicines were prepared at the Laboratory of Homeopathy of DFT/UFV in distilled water and applied in the "double-blind" procedure. Sixteen gerbox containing 40 mL of water with 100 seeds of corn, cultivar UFVM 100 Nativo, were covered with germitest paper. They were placed in B.O.D and submitted to the accelerated aging at 42ºC for 96 hours in the darkness. Normal seeds and aged seeds were divided in 4 replications of 50 seeds, weighted and soaked in solution containing 75 mL of distilled water, plus 2 mL of the homeopathic medicine for 24 hours. After completing 24 hours of soak the electrical conductivity of the solution was determined. The seeds were weighted and calculated the mass earnings of the seeds, which were distributed in rolls of germitest paper and placed in germination chamber at 25ºC. The analyses were done in 4th and 7th day after test beginning and the data were submitted to variance analysis and mean test. First trial: Antimonium crudum applied in the dinamizations 10CH to 15CH in normal corn seeds and aged seeds and distilled water as a control. Normal plantlets, length of the primary root, length of the aerial part and total length of the seedlings were determined. Aged seeds treated with 10CH to 15CH generated more normal plantlets than the control. Aged seeds treated with respectively 11CH and 14CH gave rise to larger and smaller growth of the primaryn root. Normal seeds treated with 14CH generated seedlings with smaller growth and total length. Second trial: the response of corn seeds was evaluated after aging and treatment with Arsenicum album 10CH to 15CH and the controls aged seed and normal seed, both treated with distilled water. Electrical conductivity, mass of the seed after aging, mass of the seed after 24 hours of soak, mass earnings, mass of the fresh seedlings, mass of dried aerial part, mass of the dried plantlets were determined. There was no significant difference among the variables when compared to control 1 (aged seed). All treatments from 10CH to 15CH caused decrease in leaching and mass earning of the seeds compared to control 2. The treatments 10CH, 11CH, 13CH and 15CH gave rise to lowest mass of fresh plantlets, however all treatments caused reduction in the mass of dried plantlets. The treatments 10CH, 11CH, 12CH, 13CH and 15CH caused mass decrease of dried aerial part.

Full textThe feijoa Acca sellowiana is a native specie from Planalto Serrano Catarinense region and it has high potential to be developed as cash crop, besides its ecological function in the ecosystem. In another hand, pest and diseases has been common under cultivated conditions but not confirmed in the natural conditions as well. The main problems point out were fruit fly Anastrepha sp., Conotrachelus sp. weevil, and anthracnose Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The objective of this work was to study the entomofauna of feijoa, with focus on Conotrachelus sp., fruit fly and anthracnose, and their management strategies throughout homoeopathic preparations and traps. Samples of adults of weevil were sent to expertise for identification. Feijoa fruits from monoculture systems and natural ecosystems were collected and weevil damage was assessed. The weevil dissemination into orchard was studied on trees at different spacing with and without obstacle around the trunk. Population fluctuation of fruit fly and other entomofauna species on feijoa were monitored by traps with grape juice at 20% installed inside the monoculture orchard and natural ecosystem capões in the Planalto Serrano Catarinense region. The effect of homoeopathic preparations on entomofauna was evaluated throughout homoeopathic traps. Bio-essays were conducted under controlled conditions to verified the attractiveness of homoeopathic preparations to weevil by treated bags with feijoa fruits under free choice arena. The fungus Beauveria bassiana e Metarhizium anisopliae were tested for biological control to weevil, by spraying spore suspension over adults and keeping in box under room conditions. Homoeopathic preparations were evaluated for controlling feijoa leaf diseases under field conditions in completely randomised design. Results confirmed the identity of feijoa weevil as Conotrachelus psidii, the same specie that occur on Psidium guajava. The weevil C. psidii does not move upside trunk and its damage is higher on feijoa monoculture orchard than natural ecosystems. Fruit fly was also more trapped in feijoa monoculture orchard. Homeopathic preparation of Silicea 30CH repelled weevil C. psidii. The entomopathogenic fungus B. bassiana e M. anisopliae were not effective to control C. psidii. Tannin homoeopathic preparation at 30CH increased the attractiveness of grape juice traps. Carbo vegetabilis at 30CH reduced the incidence of anthracnose and Capnodium sp. on feijoa leaves. The progenies from Uruguay and Brazil showed genetic resistance sources for using to manage anthracnose and cercosporiose diseases under field conditions

Full textTinea pedis, more commonly known as “Athlete’s foot”, is a common acute infection that occurs in warm, humid climates (Fitzpatrick, et al. 1992:98). Warmth, humidity, trauma and occlusion such as non-breathable footwear increase the susceptibility to infection (Prescott, et al. 1999:814). The infection can become chronic in people who are more susceptible such as patients who are immuno-suppressed or those who have Diabetes mellitus (al Hassan, et al. 2004: 1). The aim of this placebo-controlled double-blind study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a topical naturopathic complex comprising of Allium sativum mother tincture (Ø), Hydrastis canadensis (Ø), Apis mellifica (D3) and Urtica urens (D3) (in an aqueous cream base) in the treatment of Tinea pedis. The complex utilized in this study is regarded as naturopathic because the remedies comprising the complex were selected for the following reasons: •Allium sativum and Hydrastis canadensis, each utilized in mother tincture, were selected for their antifungal properties. •Apis mellifica and Urtica urens, each utilized in D3 potency were selected because their skin symptomotology most accurately matched the symptoms associated with “Athlete’s foot”.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Chelidonium 3X in the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia in terms of changes in the blood cholesterol levels in order to determine the extent to which homoeopathic medicine could be used in the treatment of this condition. It was hoped that there would be a drop i n the total cholesterol levels and an increase in the ratio of high density / low density lipoprotein. Participants in the trial were drawn from the staff at Technikon Natal, convenience sampling being used. For acceptance into the trial, 'participants had to have an elevated total cholesterol level together with a raised low density lipoprotein value according to age. Drawing of blood was performed following an overnight fast. Of those participants meeting the above criteTicrthirty were chosen to participate in the trial. Half constituted the control and were given a placebo and the other half made up the experimental group and were treated with Chelidonium 3X. This was a double blind study with the medicine being dispensed on a random basis by a qualified pharmacist. After commencement of the trial venous blood was collected once a month for three consecutive months from both the control and experimental groups. The participants were asked to make no changes to their normal lifestyle. Statistical analysis of the results using paired T-tests revealed no statistical difference between the initial and final total cholesterol or ratio reading of the control group. However, with the experimental group a statistical difference was noted between both the initial and final total cholesterol reading

Full textThis double blind, randomised, placebo controlled study investigated the efficacy of ProgestoNat® cream in the treatment of menopausal syndrome in terms of subjective and objective data. Menopause is defined as that point in time when permanent cessation of menstruation occurs following the loss of ovarian follicular activity. The perimenopause is the period just prior to the final menstrual period and is associated with the development of typical oestrogen deficiency symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and loss of libido, to mention a few. The most widely used treatment for these symptoms is hormone replacement therapy. This form of treatment is effective for many women, but there are many risks and side effects associated with its use and there is a growing demand for natural alternatives, like natural progesterone creams. It is for this reason that the efficacy of ProgestoNat® cream was investigated as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Taraxacum 5CH in the treatment of hypercholesterolemic patients, in terms of measuring the extent of change in serum total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein (LOL) and high density lipoprotein levels (HOL). The expected result was a resultant lowering of bath the TC and LOL levels, as well as an increase of the HOL levels. Convenience sampling was employed to draw patients from Technikon Natal, a Durban company and the general public from the greater Durban area. Only persons with raised TC and LOL levels were accepted into the trial. Of these one half constituted the control group and received only placebo, the remaining half made up the trial group and were treated with Taraxacum 5CH. The remedies were prepared and dispensed by a qualified pharmacist. Venous blood was obtained from all subjects before the trial and monthly, for three consecutive months, during the trial. A reputable pathology laboratory was employed to obtain lipogram studies of all blood samples. The participants were asked not to change their then present diets or lifestyles. Performing paired T-tests on the initial versus the final values of the control group revealed no statistically significant changes in the TC, LOL and HOL levels, whereas in the trial group a significant reduction was computed for the TC and LOL levels, as well as an insignificant increase of the HOL levels. Unpaired T-tests showed that the trial and control groups were not significantly different at the beginning ot the trial, but were found to have changed to become significantly different by the end of the trial with respects to TC and LOL levels. The HOL levels were dissimilar initially, but were shown to be significantly similar at the end of the trial.

"A placebo controlled study determining the effectiveness of a homoeopathic complex (Caladium seguinum 30CH, Nux vomica 30CH, and Staphysagria delphinium 30CH) as compared with homoeopathic similimum treatment in the management of tobacco addiction." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/66.
Full textA sudden decrease in the use of nicotine containing products, which was used daily for at least several weeks, can cause Nicotine Withdrawal Syndrome (American Psychiatric Association, 1994: 244). The mental symptoms of the withdrawal syndrome includes depressed mood; irritability, frustration, anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness or impatience. The aim of this placebo-controlled double-blind study was to determine the effectiveness of a homoeopathic complex, compared to homoeopathic similimum treatment in the management of tobacco addiction. The complex was based on the selection of those homoeopathic remedies whose symptomology most accurately matched the symptoms associated with smoking cessation.

Taylor, Liesel. "An evaluation of the homoeopathic drug proving of Naja Mossambica in the light of a doctrine of signatures analysis and a comparison between the proving symptons and the venom toxicology." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/61.
Full textThis study was conducted by administering Naja mossambica 30CH (a homoeopathic remedy derived from the venom of the Mozambican spitting cobra) to healthy individuals in order to elicit and document the resulting mental and physical symptomology. These symptoms were compared to the toxicology of Naja mossambica venom as well as a doctrine of signatures analysis of the snake in order to expand and clarify the remedy picture. Existing knowledge of the venom toxicology gives a clear indication of the organs and body systems that the substance has an affinity for. Many poisonous substances used homoeopathically rely heavily on inferences made from the toxicology of the substance, as much of the gross pathology in the symptom picture cannot safely be elucidated in a proving. The aim of this study was to determine the sphere of action of Naja mossambica by utilising symptoms obtained from the proving and from the toxicology of the venom. This was done in order to determine the remedy's usefulness in a homoeopathic clinical setting by expanding our understanding of the substance and thereby facilitating the treatment of disease based on the law of similars.

Full textThe first formal Homoeopathic education programme in South Africa introduced Technikon Natal (now the Durban Institute of Technology – DIT). The course had its first intake in 1989 and has since produced some 10 years of graduates. The programme affords the graduate a Master’s Degree in Technology in Homoeopathy (Ross, 2006). Career paths regarding graduates of this programme have never been investigated. Such an investigation was deemed valuable to clarify areas of difficulty regarding the education provided and the profession as a whole, to ascertain the viability of Homoeopathy as a career. It also aimed to identify possible other career choices a graduate may have with the education received. The study was limited to DIT Homoeopathic graduates from 1994 to 2004. The study was designed to investigate the demographic composition of the group, as well as other aspects of their career since graduation.
Thomson, Bruce. "A homoeopathic drug proving of the venom of Bitis gabonica gabonica." Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/51.
Full textThe purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of the thirtieth centesimal (30CH) potency of the venom of Bitis gabonica gabonica on healthy individuals in order to elucidate the total morbid symptomatology produced by the drug so that it may be prescribed by Homoeopathic practitioners according to the Law of Similars, as is required by Homoeopathic methodology. It was hypothesized that the 30CH potency of Bitis gabonica gabonica would produce clearly observable signs and symptoms in healthy Provers.

Full textTertiary education students are present and future health care consumers, and as such it is important that they are well educated in both mainstream and complementary health practices. Prior to this study, no data was available on the perceptions of tertiary education students towards homoeopathy in South Africa. The aim of this study was to bridge this gap in the database of knowledge by determining the perceptions and awareness that students at Durban University of Technology (D.U.T.) have towards homoeopathy and the Homoeopathic Day Clinic (H.D.C.) that exists on the D.U.T. campus.
Turner, Taryn-Lee. "A survey to determine the perceptions of veterinarians towards homoeopathy and the utilization of homoeopathy by veterinarians in KwaZulu-Natal." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/1834.
Full textIn order to determine the perceptions of veterinarians towards homoeopathy and the utilization of homoeopathy by veterinarians in KwaZulu-Natal, a survey was sent out to 128 veterinarians practicing in the area. The questionnaire consisted of 6 demographic and 26 veterinary related questions. In most cases the respondents had to tick off a pre-printed answer, but a few of the questions had open-ended answers. The questionnaire was completed and returned by 63 (49,2%) veterinarians. The data was analysed by the SPSS software and the statistical methods used were frequency tables and chi-square tests. The response by the veterinarians was very positive and the sample well distributed in terms of age, type of practice, area of practice and type of animal treated. The study showed that 60.3% of respondents use homoeopathy, with the majority of these using homoeopathy for less than 10 years. Veterinarians who treat small animals were more likely to use homoeopathy than those treating large animals. The reasons for using homoeopathy were mainly as an alternative treatment, and because the treatment has less (no) side effects. Most veterinarians use homoeopathy on few patients, with only one veterinarian using it on all patients. All the veterinarians currently using homoeopathy expressed a wish to continues using homoepathy.

Saul, Wayne. "The effectiveness of homoeopathic similimum treatment in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/44.
Full textChronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) remains a medically unexplained syndrome, with differing aetiological models, case definitions and treatment recommendations (Ranjith, 2005:13). Sharpe & Wessely (1997:179) state that the current case definition for CFS has assumed acceptance as representing nothing more than a working definition of a clinical problem, pending further understanding. CFS has subsequently become the focus of much research and debate (Wessely, Hotopf & Sharpe, 1999:13). Notwithstanding, the definition in terms of diagnostic criteria is adequate in meeting the needs of research studies (Rutherford, 2003). Anecdotal reports, espousing the effectiveness of homoeopathic treatment of CFS, points to the use of the similimum. (Bailey, 1995:189; De Schepper, 2001:6-7; Hardy, 2005:8-10). However, the limited research available on the subject suggests that more research needs to be conducted in this regard (Wessely, Hotopf & Sharpe, 1999:371; Walach, 2004:210-211). This double-blind placebo-controlled study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of homoeopathic similimum treatment in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
Vogel, Alta. "A group analysis evaluation of the class Insecta in terms of known materia medica." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10321/33.
Full textGroup analysis of homoeopathic remedies is a relatively new methodology, linking naturally related substances via their common symptomatology. At its very basic level of understanding, it is an attempt to identify a mechanism for understanding groups of related remedies according to the natural classification of various sources used in homoeopathic practice (Scholten, 1993). This not only offers new aspects to well known remedies, but illuminates the smaller, less well known remedies, resulting in a more comprehensive and rounded understanding of the materia medica

Full textUntil recently the most important method of studying homoeopathic remedies has been to look at each remedy separately and not in the context of a particular group to which it belongs. Group analysis, as defined by pioneering authors such as Sankaran (2002) and Scholten (1993), is an attempt to identify a mechanism for understanding groups of related remedies according to natural classification of the various sources used in homoeopathic practice.
