Abstract:
This work is compiled to meet the needs of students or teachers in homonymy. It this meant as a supplement to different textbooks, serves as a guide to those who wish to attain a more complete view of morphological homonymy. The work is devided into different sections, among which regular and irregular homonymy sctions are considered to be the most important ones. Each section includes a number of definitions, explanations, examples of the most common pairs of homonyms such as noun-verb, verb-verb, noun-adjective, adjective-verb, noun-noun and others. This work presents an axhaustive survey of homonymy, the variety of which suggests the idea of the dictionary of Lithuanian Morphological Homonyms.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis takes as its starting point proposals to model inflectional paradigms as geometrical structures, wherein systematic homonymies are constrained to occupy contiguous regions. It defines a precise criterion for assessing systematicity and shows, for a range of largely Indo-European and Afro-Asiatic data, that such models are observationally adequate in modelling systematic homonymies within a single inflectional dimension, and to a lesser extent, between different inflectional dimensions. This is taken to indicate that widely assumed characterizations of inflectional categories in terms of cross-classifying binary features are incorrect, inasmuch as such characterizations fail to predict the linearizability of natural classes of properties belonging to those categories. The same inadequacy besets attempts to account for systematic homonymies by means of rules that convert or 'refer' one morpho-syntactic representation to another. Rather it is argued that the linearizability of natural classes of properties suggests that inflectional categories are structured as a sub-classification of those properties, but that a phenomenon of 're-marking' serves to define, under strict constraints, additional natural classes beyond those defined by the sub-classification itself. The specific sub- classifications indicated by observed patterns of homonymy are language-specific. In addition, the properties so sub-classified under a single node may in certain cases be drawn from separate morpho-syntactic categories. This is taken to indicate that the terminal nodes of a morphological sub-classification are not morpho-syntactic feature complexes but purely morphological functions performing a discontinuous mapping between morpho-syntactic and morpho-phonological representations. The systematicity of homonymy patterns, then, is shown to be evidence for a linguistic level of 'pure morphology'.

Full text
Abstract:

The current study set out to explore the nature of online lexical access to polysemes and homonyms within L2 learners of English. Two separate experiments were conducted on 30 ESL learners and 30 native speakers of English (as a control group) using the self-paced reading method (SPR) with a view to exploring whether L2 learners of English access the meanings of the lexically-ambiguous words selectively (i.e., only the meaning primed by the preceding contextual information is accessed), exhaustively (i.e., several meanings are accessed concurrently), or in a frequency-ordered way (i.e., the most frequent meaning is accessed prior to the less frequent meanings) during sentence processing. Experiment 1 examined the effect of the lexical ambiguity type on lexical access using three categories of words: 10 polysemes, 10 homonyms, and 10 single-meaning words. Experiment 2 investigated the effect of meaning dominance on lexical processing using 20 polarized ambiguous words with dominant and subordinate meanings to find out whether the frequency of meaning affects the latency of lexical access. The results from the two experiments showed that neither lexical ambiguity type nor meaning dominance significantly affected the processing latencies of the non-native speakers (NNSs) and native speakers (NSs) in context. The results suggest that the nature of lexical access to the meanings of the lexically ambiguous words in L2 learners is selective as long as the word is presented in a sentential context.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. (Translation studies and Lingustics)) --University of Limpopo, 2015
The aim of this study is to investigate ambiguity in Xitsonga. There are many kinds of ambiguity, but the study mainly focuses on lexical and structural ambiguity. Lexical ambiguity occurs at word level and is caused by homonyms (homophones and homographs) and polysemes. Structural ambiguity occurs at sentence level. This kind of ambiguity manifests in the structure of the sentence itself. Data were collected through self-observation as a native Xitsonga speaker. Words and sentences with multiple meanings in Xitsonga were listed and tree diagrams were used to illustrate and disambiguate ambiguity. The study reveals that, like other languages, Xitsonga has words and sentences with double or many meanings. KEYWORDS AMBIGUITY, LEXICAL AMBIGUITY, STRUCTURAL AMBIGUITY, HOMONYM, HOMOPHONES, HOMOGRAPHS, POLYSEMES.

Scientific and technical literature has a number of peculiarities, which make it a unique language subfield. Language of scientific and technical literature differs from everyday language due to certain lexical, grammatical and stylistic features. The defining features of scientific and technical literature are its informative value, consistency, accuracy, objectivity, and clarity. But the main and the most important distinctive feature of this kind of literature is the variety of terminology. There are terms that have the same form but represent entirely different concepts, and they are called homonyms.

Abstract:
The objective of the current thesis is to reach a better understanding of the scribe occupation and their training processes within the Nuzi documentation through the study of 12 scribes who worked for a woman named Tulpun-naya.By creating a descriptive profile for each of these scribes we develop a more precise understanding of their professional practices using the following criteria:– The professional environment (employers, colleagues) and the circle of people involved when the contract was completed (witnesses, parties, judges).– The degree of mobility: the scribe may have focused his activities within a specific city or move to other places in order to broaden his « client base ». – The level of specialization as regard written production.– The syntactical and linguistic aspects, the grammar traits and the variations in style in the scribe corpus.– The external characteristics of the medium (tablet shape and text layout).– The various practices concerning seals such as sharing and lending and transfer as well as the use of several seals by the scribe during his career.– The scribe social position and his secondary occupations if any.Furthermore, by comparing the above mentioned criteria, the present research aims to bring to light the delivery of scribal instruction, its form and evolution between scribes of a same family through several generations. The 12 scribes who worked for Tulpun-naya wrote for her 37 tablets but they were employed by other persons. In order to conduct a thorough investigation, a much vaster corpus (460 tablets) is consulted corresponding to their whole written production, from which various indicators are collected in order to create an accurate descriptive profile. This systematic approach enable to deal with the difficult problem of homonymy.Once the corpus of each scribe is defined, it is possible to identify the period during which he practiced his profession. In the absence of any date notification, the presence of members of wealthy Nuzian families in the documents written by the scribes allows us to place the texts in a relative chronology. Finally, after this chronology has been correctly established, we are able to highlight the various phases of the scribe career

Abstract:
There are many mistakes in the study of English when translating pseudo-internationalisms. Internationalisms are international words that have the same meaning in many languages. The reason for the emergence of internationalisms is the need to designate some special kind of subjects or concepts that do not yet exist in the language of translation. When translated, these words acquire new meanings, which are absent in Ukrainian international analogues. The spread of internationalisms in the vocabulary of the language contributes to its more effective use in the processes of international exchange of information. Pseudo-internationalisms or interlingual homonyms are pairs of words in two languages that are similar in spelling or pronunciation but differ in meaning. The reasons for the emergence of linguistic homonyms are: the shift of semantics in related languages, when the word from the ancestral language acquires different meanings in the process of separate development of the offspring languages; change in the semantics of borrowing (when under borrowing a foreign word its meaning changes, it becomes an inaccurate correspondence of the source word. The peculiaritieses of translation of pseudo-internationalisms are: violation of norms of lexical compatibility, loan translation.

This work focuses on the Serbian language and literature from its beginnings until the present days, and on the basic concepts concerning the terms used in the general semantic as well as the terms that were used in this work such as homonymy, polysemy, synonymy etc. This work represents the connection between the semantics and the rhetoric. It deals with the figures of speech and the tropes in the light of linguistics. It focuses mainly on metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche. The different types of the metaphor have been taken in consideration: dead metaphor, metaphor with the copula and metaphor with a verb instead of the copula. The last mentioned type of metaphor proves that this figure of speech is not an abbreviated comparison. All the types of the metonymy were examined, as well as synecdoche with its subtypes. The theory of sets that was used for graphic presentation of the different types of metonymy and synecdoche clearly shows that the synecdoche has a significant autonomy and cannot be considered as a simple subtype of the metonymy

Abstract:
So far, the distributed computing community has either assumed that all the processes of a distributed system have distinct identifiers or, more rarely, that the processes are anonymous and have no identifiers. These are two extremes of the same general model: namely, n processes use l different identifiers, where 1 l n. We call this model homonymous model. To determine the power of homonymous model as well as the importance of identifiers in distributed computing, this thesis studies the consensus problem, one of the most famous distributed computing problem. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the number of identifiers for solving consensus in a distributed system with t faulty processes in the synchronous case. We show that in crash, send omission and general omission failures model, the uniform consensus is solvable even if processes are anonymous. Thus, identifiers are not useful in that case. However identifiers become important in Byzantine failures model: 3t + 1 identifiers is necessary and sufficient for Byzantine agreement. Surprisingly the number of identifiers must be greater than n+3t 2 in presence of three facets of uncertainty: partial synchrony, Byzantine failures and homonyms. This demonstrates two differences from the classical model (which has l = n): there are situations where relaxing synchrony to partial synchrony renders agreement impossible, and, in the partially synchronous case, increasing the number of correct processes can actually make it harder to reach agreement.

Nightingale, Stephen. "Polysemy and homonymy in Japanese verbal alternations." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22525.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the degree to which Japanese verbal alternations can be related synchronically. In particular, it investigates the possibility of providing a polysemous analysis of the verbs which appear in simplex and conjunct forms using the conjunctive te form. The data which are investigated include those verbs which participate as second conjunct in a syntactic construction which has been labelled by Hasegawa (1995) as Nuclear Conjunction. The verbs taking second conjunct position which are analysed include miru (see), morau (receive), ageru (give), iru (animate be) and aru (inanimate be). In the conjunct construction, the first conjunct takes the affix te and no arguments can intervene between the two verbs. Furthermore the Vendler-Dowty (Dowty (1979)) aspectual class of the first conjunct verb is restricted, and there is variation in the number of arguments that can be realised, depending on the properties of the second conjunct. The analysis is developed using Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) (Pollard and Sag (1994) and Pustejovsky's (1995) Generative Lexicon theory. Polysemous analysis of the simplex and te form alternations of miru, morau and ageru are provided, based on underspecification in the syntactic comps and semantic content type hierarchies. Since current HPSG makes no provision for aspect, a type of hierarchy is developed using Pustejovsky's Event Structure, under the content field. Variations in argument realization are shown to follow from the different modes of composing the first and second conjuncts. One particular interesting construction in Japanese is what Matsumoto (1990) calls the Intransitivizing Resultative involving V+te aru, which as a conjunction projects the undergoer of the first conjunct to subject, suppressing the actor role. The valence alternation displayed in this construction is explained by the Agentive and Formal projections of Pustejovsky's Qualia Structure. Some degree of polysemy is shown to hold between simplex and conjunct uses of the example verbs, but there are other syntactic phenomena to be explained. The thesis also examines the te conjunctions as control constructions and finds that Pollard and Sag's (1994) claim that the controlling subject is overtly structure-shared with the semantic subject of the embedded predicate, is at best not proven.

Full text
Abstract:
Egyptology is a discipline in which new research and new approaches are continuously necessary and – in most cases – provided. In this constant flow of new research, some subject areas are left untouched. The lemmas aA and wr have continuously had a very homogenous translation although the morphological and syntactical differences are quite visible. The generally accepted translation of both lemmas as ‘great’ is very singular and raises the question of whether aA and wr should be considered synonyms or not. The study consists of two combined parts; a morpho-syntactical analysis of aA and wr and their conjugations and distributions as well as a semantic analysis on different expressions and sentences where both aA and wr occur with the same, or similar, syntactical structure. The aim is to give clarification to the correlation between the lemmas aA and wr and their interpretation. The study is not restricted to a specific time period, but regards linguistic developments as an important factor in the analysis. An important conclusion from this study is the clear, preferred use of wr as a qualifier for physical greatness, as opposed to aA which appears in contexts more related to metaphorical greatness. During Late Egyptian the opacity of the different uses of aA and wr increases and the differentiation becomes quite fuzzy.

Abstract:
It is question to distinguish the adverbs which have the same
Form as a verb of quality from their homonymous verbs of quality in adverbial position. This work began by a diachronic analysis about origin of these derivatives forms. The articulation of this search is to establish the syntactico-semantics criteria : (1) coexistence in the couple of antonym, (2) modification by hen. . . (de) or. . . Yidiar yixie, (3) to precede an other adverb or a negative form, (4) suffixation of -shi (adverbial suffix) or -xing (a near suffix). Abstract:

Abstract:
Identifying the severity level of unintelligibility objectively and efficiently holds critical clinical implications for speech assessment and intervention needs. The speech of children who demonstrate phonological deviations is frequently unintelligible. The use of an accurate and time-efficient measurement of intelligibility is necessary to screen children who may be producing phonological patterns that contribute to significantly reduced intelligibility in connected speech. The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of concurrent validity between scores received on the 1-Minute Measure of Homonymy and Intelligibility (Hodson, 1992) and speech intelligibility as measured by the percent of words understood in connected speech. For this investigation, intelligibility is operationally defined as the percent of words understood in a connected speech sample derived from orthographic transcription. Data collected were from 48 children, aged 4:0 to 5:6, who demonstrated varying levels of phonological proficiency/deficiency. A group of four listeners who had experience treating children with phonological disorders were responsible for completing orthographic transcriptions of the 48 connected speech samples. The two methods of assessing speech intelligibility investigated in this study were found to correlate highly (r = .84). This is considered a significant statistical correlation and therefore the 1-Minute Measure may be used to provide speech-language pathologists with valuable information to predict a child's intelligibility level in connected speech. A regression formula was employed to predict percentage of intelligibility when presented with a child's 1- Minute Measure score. Results from this correlational study suggest that the 1- Minute Measure of Homonymy and Intelligibility may serve as an assessment tool that can provide a speech-language pathologist with some valuable information pertaining to a child's level of intelligibility in connected speech. When used with another speech assessment tool, the 1-Minute Measure may function as a screening measure to identify preschoolers who produce phonological deviations that interfere with intelligibility of conversational speech.

Abstract:
Cerebral damage to the optic radiations or striate cortex causes ‘homonymous hemianopia’, blindness in the contralateral half of the visual field in each eye. In cultures that read left to right, a right hemianopia has a severe effect on reading efficiency, particularly when the central 5° are lost, because most of the information acquired during reading lies in the right parafoveal field. We explored the importance of right hemifield loss in diagnosing pure alexia (Experiments 1, 2). Later, we assessed the feasibility of an online training program for the rehabilitation of hemianopic dyslexia, and the eye-movement changes that might accompany learning (Experiment 3). In the first two experiments, human subjects performed several visual processing tasks, using a simulated hemianopia gaze-contingent display. We found that hemianopia alone can account for some previously reported impairments in pure alexia. Subsequently, we provide diagnostic criterion for using the word-length effect to discriminate between hemainopic dyslexia and pure alexia for various types of central involvement by right hemifield loss. In the final experiment, a pilot rehabilitation study, two patients with hemianopic dyslexia performed a 10-week on-line perceptual learning task to increase reading span, and improve reading efficiency. Following training, benefits were limited to an increase in the size of forward saccades in one patient (patient JW). We conclude that this training approach is feasible, though further studies are needed to establish efficacy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Visual mental imagery is usually accompanied by spontaneous eye movements that are not random but reflect the spatial content of the imagery. The main objective of this thesis was to use eye movements recording in order to explore the mechanisms, the dynamics, the reference frames and the neural processes of spatial representations in healthy subjects and brain damaged patients. We recorded eye movements during the verbal recall of french cities from long-term memory, either through mental imagery of the map of France, or through a semantic access (verbal fluency task). This paradigm was carried out in three different situations: In healthy subjects with free gaze, in healthy subjects with fixed gaze and in patients with unilateral spatial neglect and / or homonymous hemianopia with free gaze. Using bi-dimensional regression (BDR) between ocular positions when cities were evoked and GPS positions of these cities, we could provide an individual analysis in each of these three situations. In healthy subjects with free gaze, we demonstrated that mental imagery is built sequentially and fragmented, and that significant correlation is a signature, at an individual level, of the use of visual imagery. In healthy subjects with central gaze fixation, we have demonstrated that the remaining microsaccades still reflect the spatial content of the imagery in most individuals. In patients with hemineglect, the mental representation of the map of France was disturbed both in the allocentric reference frame (lack of spatial coherence for cities of the left side) and in the egocentric reference frame (mental map shifted ipsilesionally). In subjects with hemianopia, the mental image was shifted contralesionally but was spatially coherent in the allocentric frame. These results are discussed in the light of the different theories on eye movements and mental imagery found in the literature and in particular with respect to the Kosslyn model of imagery in which the primary visual cortex (damaged in hemianopia) corresponds to the substratum of the visual buffer and the right parieto-frontal network to the substratum of the the attentional window and the spatial properties processing system

Abstract:
Saccadic eye movements are rapid and necessary to targeting the interesting object in our visual environment. Despite the crucial role of the occipital cortex in the visual process, its implication in the saccadic generation is poorly studied. To examine this, we can use one pathological model, the homonymous hemianopia (i.e. loss of contralateral visual hemifield to unilateral occipital lesion). Despite the loss of conscious vision, some patients can be able to react at one stimulus presented in the contralesional hemifield. These residual abilities, named blindsight, can be observed in attentional and/or motor tasks. The aim of this thesis is examine the parameters of saccades in hemianopic patients, through the study of saccade types (voluntary and reflexive saccades) and classical effects on the modulation of saccadic parameters (gap effect and distractor effects, by manipulating the spatial and temporal characteristics of the fixation point, the target or a distractor). Furthermore, the residual abilities are investigated by perceptual tasks (detection or discrimination) with different types of response: verbal, manual (key press) and motor (saccade or fixation). Overall, despite the loss of conscious perception of the target presented in the contralesional hemifield, residual abilities are found as showed by the saccadic execution toward the target, with a dichotomy depending on the need to perform an action on the visual stimulation. This suggests that the role of the occipital cortex is not the same in the selection mechanism for the action and the perception. Concerning to saccadic programming, dissociation is found in the saccadic parameters. The saccadic initiation, studied by with the saccade latency, is altered in both ipsi- and contralesional hemifields but the saccade metric, studied by the saccade amplitude, is altered in the contralesional hemifield. This suggests that the occipital cortex is implicated in the saccade generation and that saccade programing involves two pathways for the initiation and the metric of saccades

Abstract:

Abstract:
An increasing amount of evidence suggests that both cerebral hemispheres contribute to the comprehension of semantic relations. A literature review of language abilities after right hemisphere (RH) damage reveals abnormalities in the interpretation of lexical items that have alternate meanings (Chiarello, 1991). Two major theories have been proposed to account for the lexical-semantic deficits observed in RH damaged (RHD) individuals, namely the "suppression deficit" and the "coarse semantic coding" hypotheses. By exploiting the theoretical linguistic distinction of lexical ambiguity into homonymy, metaphor and metonymy, the present investigation attempts to directly contrast the predictions of the two hypotheses. To this end, two on-line priming studies were developed, each comprising two experiments conducted with RHD patients, individuals with nonfluent aphasia subsequent to left hemisphere damage (LHD) and non-brain-damaged control participants (NC).
The first single-word priming study showed that, for all three subject groups (NC, LHD, RHD), the multiple meanings of homonymous and metonymous words can be triggered and accessed out of context, whereas for metaphorical words, context seems to be necessary in order to access secondary metaphorical meanings. The second sentence priming study showed that the RHD patients' performance contrasts with the performance of the normal control and LHD non-fluent aphasic subjects who showed both effects of context and the time-course of processing, as well as comparable processing across the three types of ambiguous words. For the RHD patients, although homonymous and metonymous words showed relatively normal patterns of activation, the subordinate meanings of metaphors were not activated, suggesting a selective problem with figurative meanings.
Taken together, these findings suggest that the lexical ambiguity processing deficit observed after RH damage is mostly evident when processing subordinate meanings of metaphorically ambiguous words (even in the presence of biasing context), although a lesion in one hemisphere does not completely disrupt the ability of individuals to appreciate the alternative meanings of ambiguous words at the single-word level. The findings were contrary to the strongest expectations of both the "coarse semantic coding" and the "suppression deficit" hypotheses of RH language abilities; however, they seem to be more consistent with a weaker version of the "suppression deficit" hypothesis according to which RH damage leads to deficits in contextual integration and selection of appropriate meanings.

Abstract:
Rehabilitation for patients with homonymous visual field defects (HVFDs) is important for helping to improve their quality of life. Various therapies have been developed, most notably vision restoration training (VRT), optical aids and compensatory training. Studies utilising modem optical aids have reported promising results but the extent to which these aids can reliably reduce the patients' visual disability has yet to be confirmed. Restorative approaches are the most ambitious and controversial, aiming to restore vision to portions of the lost visual field. Whilst early studies suggested that VRT could reduce the visual field defect. recent studies using more reliable methods to monitor the patients' fixation coulc not confirm this effect.

I will present experimental evidence that when the primary visual pathway is completely damaged, the only signal that can be implicitly processed via subcortical visual networks is fear. I will also present data showing that in a patient with relative deafferentation of visual cortex, changes in the spatial tuning and response gain of the contralesional and ipsilesional cortex are observed, which are accompanied by changes in functional connectivity with regions belonging to the dorsal attentional network and the default mode network. I will also discuss how cortical plasticity might be harnessed to improve recovery through novel treatments. Moreover, I will show how treatment interventions aimed at recruiting spared subcortical pathway supporting multisensory orienting can drive network level change.

In the introduction we presented the theory of the matrix and etymons and the development of the theory as wel as the matrix and we have identified untel now. Then we studied the phono-semantic correlation [+ approximant] , [+ continuant], "bring something to him self" in arabic, withch allowed us to organize the conceptual field of this phono-semantic correlation. Afterwards we searched for the terms which include a (guttural) and (+ continuant). And we found that the guttural exhibit the same proprieties us the approximant "r" and "l". In the second chapter we searched for the same proprieties in hebrew. We studied the development of the etymon in hebrew. We performed a first despoliation to look for the terms which include "r" and "l" with (+ continuant), then we made second despoliation concerning the gutturals (+ continuant). In the third chapter we explained the disambiguation of the terms which realize the phono-semantic correlation. In the forth chapter, we proceeded to the reorganization of the lexicon realizing the phono-semantic correlation [+ approximant], [+ continuant] "bring something to himself". We provided the list of the verbs of the Kazimir database which were analyzed and reorganized us a realization of the phono-semantic correlation that we studied
