Abstract:
This chapter surveys the linguistic landscape of taboo avoidance and its role in word loss and meaning change. Freud invoked Carl Abel’s “universal phenomenon” of Gegensinn in support of his edict that there is no no in the unconscious. Languages typically do tolerate words that bear opposed or semantically unrelated senses. Only when homonyms share the same grammatical category and context of occurrence does one of them disappear. But in the case of taboo words, “Avoid Homonymy” extends to block word senses or uses even when no confusion would plausibly occur. In this linguistic correlate of Gresham’s Law, “bad” (= taboo) meanings force out “good” (= innocent) ones and generate lexical replacements, activating the “euphemism treadmill.” The potency of linguistic taboo is also on display in the psychology of “etymythology,” which reveals more about language users than the language used.

Abstract:
Since Paul and Zipf, it has become evident that lexical choice and meaning change are largely guided by pragmatic principles. Two central interacting principles are, first, the least-effort tendency to reduce expression and, second, the communicative requirements on sufficiency of information. Descendants of this opposition include Grice’s bipartite Maxim of Quantity (‘Make your contribution as informative as/no more informative than is required’) grounded within a general theory of rationality and cooperation, the Q and R Principles (essentially ‘Say enough’/‘Don’t say too much’), and the interplay of effort and effect within Relevance Theory. This chapter motivates a (Q-based) constraint on lexicalization, surveys the role of the R principle in motivating the Division of Pragmatic Labour, syntagmatic reduction, narrowing of meaning, euphemism, and negative strengthening, and provides pragmatic motivation for the lexical clone, un-noun, and un-verb constructions, and for the complementary Avoid Synonymy and Avoid Homonymy principles.

Abstract:
Abstract Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy provides, twice each year, a collection of the best current work in the field of ancient philosophy. Each volume features original essays that contribute to an understanding of a wide range of themes and problems in all periods of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, from the beginnings to the threshold of the Middle Ages. From its first volume in 1983, OSAP has been a highly influential venue for work in the field and has often featured essays of substantial length as well as critical essays on books of distinctive importance. Volume LXI contains: an examination of the relation between technē and epistēmē in Plato; a new reading of the final argument for immorality in the Phaedo and its connection to the affinity argument; the account of colour in the Timaeus; a renewed examination of Aristotle’s distinction between synonymy and homonymy and its consequences for questions of incommensurability; his conception of geometrical objects; his treatment of continence or enkrateia; and a close examination of Sextus Empiricus’ response to dogmatists’ charge of self-refutation in the final arguments of Against the Logicians.
