Full textThe first single-word priming study showed that, for all three subject groups (NC, LHD, RHD), the multiple meanings of homonymous and metonymous words can be triggered and accessed out of context, whereas for metaphorical words, context seems to be necessary in order to access secondary metaphorical meanings. The second sentence priming study showed that the RHD patients' performance contrasts with the performance of the normal control and LHD non-fluent aphasic subjects who showed both effects of context and the time-course of processing, as well as comparable processing across the three types of ambiguous words. For the RHD patients, although homonymous and metonymous words showed relatively normal patterns of activation, the subordinate meanings of metaphors were not activated, suggesting a selective problem with figurative meanings.
Taken together, these findings suggest that the lexical ambiguity processing deficit observed after RH damage is mostly evident when processing subordinate meanings of metaphorically ambiguous words (even in the presence of biasing context), although a lesion in one hemisphere does not completely disrupt the ability of individuals to appreciate the alternative meanings of ambiguous words at the single-word level. The findings were contrary to the strongest expectations of both the "coarse semantic coding" and the "suppression deficit" hypotheses of RH language abilities; however, they seem to be more consistent with a weaker version of the "suppression deficit" hypothesis according to which RH damage leads to deficits in contextual integration and selection of appropriate meanings.

Full textThis work focuses on the Serbian language and literature from its beginnings until the present days, and on the basic concepts concerning the terms used in the general semantic as well as the terms that were used in this work such as homonymy, polysemy, synonymy etc. This work represents the connection between the semantics and the rhetoric. It deals with the figures of speech and the tropes in the light of linguistics. It focuses mainly on metaphor, metonymy and synecdoche. The different types of the metaphor have been taken in consideration: dead metaphor, metaphor with the copula and metaphor with a verb instead of the copula. The last mentioned type of metaphor proves that this figure of speech is not an abbreviated comparison. All the types of the metonymy were examined, as well as synecdoche with its subtypes. The theory of sets that was used for graphic presentation of the different types of metonymy and synecdoche clearly shows that the synecdoche has a significant autonomy and cannot be considered as a simple subtype of the metonymy

Full textThe objective of the current thesis is to reach a better understanding of the scribe occupation and their training processes within the Nuzi documentation through the study of 12 scribes who worked for a woman named Tulpun-naya.By creating a descriptive profile for each of these scribes we develop a more precise understanding of their professional practices using the following criteria:– The professional environment (employers, colleagues) and the circle of people involved when the contract was completed (witnesses, parties, judges).– The degree of mobility: the scribe may have focused his activities within a specific city or move to other places in order to broaden his « client base ». – The level of specialization as regard written production.– The syntactical and linguistic aspects, the grammar traits and the variations in style in the scribe corpus.– The external characteristics of the medium (tablet shape and text layout).– The various practices concerning seals such as sharing and lending and transfer as well as the use of several seals by the scribe during his career.– The scribe social position and his secondary occupations if any.Furthermore, by comparing the above mentioned criteria, the present research aims to bring to light the delivery of scribal instruction, its form and evolution between scribes of a same family through several generations.The 12 scribes who worked for Tulpun-naya wrote for her 37 tablets but they were employed by other persons. In order to conduct a thorough investigation, a much vaster corpus (460 tablets) is consulted corresponding to their whole written production, from which various indicators are collected in order to create an accurate descriptive profile. This systematic approach enable to deal with the difficult problem of homonymy.Once the corpus of each scribe is defined, it is possible to identify the period during which he practiced his profession. In the absence of any date notification, the presence of members of wealthy Nuzian families in the documents written by the scribes allows us to place the texts in a relative chronology. Finally, after this chronology has been correctly established, we are able to highlight the various phases of the scribe career

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An evaluation of semantic information in a dictionary must take into account all aspects of meaning of lexical items. Therefore the different homonyms and polysemous senses of lexical items and the underlying semantic relations between lexical items are accounted for. A description should be given of the lexical items which form the macrostructure of HAT. These lexical items include sublexical, multilexical and free lexical items. The treatment of multilexical items in HAT is not satisfactory at present and suggestions are made for the improvement of the situation. Possible solutions for distinguishing between homonymy and polysemy are given. Suggestions to determine the possible polysemous senses of a lexical item are also made. The ordering of polysemous senses and different homonyms are discussed. It is essential to make use of a synchronic criterion to distinguish between homonymy and polysemy. The HAT's treatment of semantic relations between lexical items is not always very succesfull. The semantic relation which receives the most substantial treatment is that of semantic inclusion between lexical items. The HAT's treatment of synonyms is not without problems. More attention should be given to semantic linking and semantic opposition between lexical items. An evaluation of the system of cross-references in HAT is given, with special reference to the function of cross-references. Sometimes indistinct typographical conventions are used and they confuse the user of the dictionary. The indistinct use of typographical conventions has a detrimental influence on the transfer of information. The cross-reference system of HAT can be improved by an informative explanation in the general introduction, focusing on ways and means to use it more specifically, unambiguously and consistently. A distinction is made between various types of definitions used to define lemmas. Well known lexicographic definitions such as definitions per genus et differentia, synonymdefinitions, example definitions, circular definitions and descriptive definitions are discussed. The usage definition and two definitions which explicate a semantic plus value, the contrast and diminutive definitions, are identified. Attention is also given to the role of the general introduction in a standard synchronic dictionary. Suggestions are made to improve the general introduction of HAT.

Dit sluit homonimiese vorme en polisemiese onderskeidinge van leksikale items in, asook die semantiese betrekkinge wat leksikale items onderling met mekaar aangaan. Die leksikale items wat die makrostruktuur van die HAT vorm, word beskryf. Dit sluit subleksikale, multileksikale en vrye leksikale items in. Verskillende tipes multileksikale en subleksikale items word onderskei. Tans word multileksikale items in HAT nie na wense hanteer nie en voorstelle word aan die hand gedoen hoe die stelsel verbeter kan word. Moontlike oplossings vir die onderskeidingsprobleem tussen homonimie en polisemie, asook maniere waarop 'n leksikale item se polisemiese onderskeidinge vasgestel kan word, word verskaf. Aandag word ook aan die ordening van polisemiese onderskeidinge en homonimiese vorme gegee. Dit is belangrik dat 'n sinchroniese maatstaf gebruik word om tussen homonimie en polisemie te onderskei. Semantiese betrekkinge tussen leksikale items word met 'n wisselende mate van sukses deur HAT hanteer. Semantiese insluiting tussen leksikale items word die meeste beskryf. Daar bestaan egter probleme by die hantering van sinonimie tussen leksikale items. Semantiese aansluiting tussen leksikale items word min deur die woordeboek aangedui. Semantiese opposisie tussen leksikale items kan ook meer deur die HAT aangedui word. Die kruisverwysingstelsel van die HAT word ondersoek. Funksies van kruisverwysings word beskryf. Kruisverwysings word wel deur die HAT redaksie gebruik, maar hulle kan nog meer gebruik word. Soms word onduidelike tipografiese konvensies gebruik en dit het swak inligtingsoordrag tot gevolg. Die kruisverwysingstelsel van die HAT kan verbeter word deur dit in die toeligtende aantekeninge te verduidelik, spesifiek en ondubbelsinnig toe te pas en deur dit konsekwent te gebruik. Verskillende tipes definisies waarmee leksikale items gedefinieer word, word onderskei. Bekende leksikografiese definisies soos genus-differentia-definisies, sinoniemdefinisies, voorbeelddefinisies, sirkeldefinisies en deskriptiewe definisies word bespreek. Die gebruiksdefinisie en twee definsies wat semantiese pluswaardes ekspliseer, naamlik die teenstellingsdefinisie en die verkleiningsdefinisie,word geidentifiseer. Die rol van toeligtende aantekeninge in 'n handwoordeboek word bespreek. Daar word gewys op die swak toeligtende aantekeninge van die HAT. Voorstelle word gedoen oor hoe die hantering van semantiese inligting in die toeligtende aantekeninge verduidelik moet.

Este trabalho apresenta uma análise comparativa de palavras heterossemânticas do português e do espanhol. A pesquisa foi motivada face à observação da mudança ou deslocamento de sentido ocorrido em palavras substancialmente semelhantes nas duas línguas, e sua relativa freqüência em textos, e em produções (falada ou escrita) de nativos e aprendizes de uma língua estrangeira. O questionamento principal volta-se especificamente para um problema léxico-semântico. Isto é, quais seriam as possíveis causas para a divergência semântica entre duas palavras substancialmente idênticas em línguas geneticamente relacionadas? O problema da divergência de sentidos nesses lexemas é especificamente semântico ou outros níveis lingüísticos se imbricam? Há algum tipo de relação semântica ou de significado nesses lexemas que explique esse fenômeno? Se há, como essa relação ocorre nas duas línguas, e/ou em cada língua particular? Assim, procura-se descrever comparativamente esses lexemas classificando-os e analisando-os através das relações semânticas de polissemia e homonímia, e identificar as causas que promovem a mudança ou o deslocamento de sentido neles. O corpus constitui-se de pares de palavras lexicais do português e do espanhol semelhantes fonética ou graficamente, e consideradas heterossemânticas por serem semelhantes no plano da expressão (som) e divergentes no plano do conteúdo (significado). Descreve-se sua etimologia, seus sentidos primários e secundários, exemplificando cada um dos sentidos com sentenças observadas no uso formal e informal da língua, escrito ou falado, presentes em livros, textos e dicionários, e ainda no uso espontâneo de informantes dessas línguas. O trabalho apresenta um carácter eminentemente explicativo quanto ao tratamento dos dados, diante de uma perspectiva, basicamente, diacrônica e estruturalista pois volta-se para aspectos históricos e etimológicos, explicitando as causas das mudanças ou deslocamento de sentido. Procura-se comprovar também que essa divergência semântica pode ser explicada através das relações semânticas de polissemia e homonímia. Fundamenta-se, teoricamente, por um lado, nos postulados da Lingüística Aplicada, visando à questão da interferência/interlíngua, à delimitação e classificação dos heterossemânticos. Por outro lado, ao tratar especificamente sobre as questões léxico-semânticas, recorre-se à Lingüística Geral e à Semântica Lingüística, dentro da linha semântica denominada pré-Estruturalista preconizada por Saussure, e em discussões de Ullmann, Guiraud, Lyons. Discute-se sobre o signo lingüístico e sua natureza, sobre arbitrariedade e mutabilidade, valor lingüístico, sobre as relações semânticas de polissemia e homonímia, as causas de mudanças ou deslocamento de sentido, e outras questões que envolvem o problema. Assim, da análise comparativa dos dados, classificam-se os heterossemânticos em: homônimos e polissêmicos, e estes, em quatro subgrupos advindos de processos lingüísticos distintos. Em síntese, os heterossemânticos propriamente ditos (homônimos) surgem por evolução fonética, ou por divergências semânticas na origem ou base; os heterossemânticos acidentais (polissêmicos) tornam-se tais por evolução semântica, deslocamento de sentido, ou traços semânticos distintos. Acredita-se também que o português possui mais lexemas motivados do que os mesmos do espanhol, pois o grau de arbitrariedade e motivação é diferente em ambas; confirma-se ainda que apesar de as línguas confrontadas terem inúmeros cognatos entre si, os mesmos tornam-se heterossemânticos, devido ao deslocamento ou mudanças semânticas ocorridos em cada língua particularmente.

Full textSyftet med denna studie är att studera hur lärarrollen har definierats och förändrats i grundskolans läroplaner mellan 1962-2011, med fokus på två olika sätt att se på lärarens uppdrag; läraren som ensam styrare av verksamheten i klassrummet eller lärarlag som utövar en viss grad av kollektiv styrning. Frågeställningarna i studien är; Hur har lärarens uppdrag formulerats i läroplanerna? Förväntas läraren utföra sitt uppdrag ensam eller tillsammans med andra lärare? Organisationsteori är utgångspunkten för forskningsintresset och det är inom denna sektor som studiens resultat kan vara av praktisk nytta. Studien fokuserar på läroplanerna och de rollförväntningar som beskrivs i dessa. Rollteori/systemteori ger de teoretiska begreppen och är utgångspunkten för analysen. Studien har en kvalitativ ansats men en viss kvantitativ bearbetning av data förekommer. Ett urval av data har gjorts från läroplanerna LGR 62, LGR 80, Lpo 94 samt LGR 11. Vid urvalet har selektiv kodning använts med utgångspunkt i kärnkategorin läraren/lärarna. Nästa kategorisering har varit vilka instruktionsord som kopplas samman med kärnkategorin. I analysmomentet har särskilt intresse riktats mot autonoma rollförväntningar (individuella roller) eller homonoma rollförväntningar (samarbetsroller). Studien visar att formuleringen av lärarens uppdrag förändrats från en läroplan till en annan. Statens styrning har förändrats genom användandet av olika slags instruktionsord. Vad man väljer att styra hårdare har varierat. Den senaste läroplanen LGR 11 innehåller också den starkaste styrningen genom ett konsekvent användande av instruktionen läraren ska. Studien visar också att läroplanerna aldrig i någon högre grad har använts för att formulera ett kollektivt uppdrag riktat till lärarna som grupp. De kollektiva beslutsprocesser som beskrivs är mer inriktade på att involvera eleverna i beslutsfattande. Huvudfokus i alla läroplanerna ligger på den enskilde lärarens arbete och inte på ett kollektivt utförande av uppdraget.

Full textThe current study set out to explore the nature of online lexical access to polysemes and homonyms within L2 learners of English. Two separate experiments were conducted on 30 ESL learners and 30 native speakers of English (as a control group) using the self-paced reading method (SPR) with a view to exploring whether L2 learners of English access the meanings of the lexically-ambiguous words selectively (i.e., only the meaning primed by the preceding contextual information is accessed), exhaustively (i.e., several meanings are accessed concurrently), or in a frequency-ordered way (i.e., the most frequent meaning is accessed prior to the less frequent meanings) during sentence processing. Experiment 1 examined the effect of the lexical ambiguity type on lexical access using three categories of words: 10 polysemes, 10 homonyms, and 10 single-meaning words. Experiment 2 investigated the effect of meaning dominance on lexical processing using 20 polarized ambiguous words with dominant and subordinate meanings to find out whether the frequency of meaning affects the latency of lexical access. The results from the two experiments showed that neither lexical ambiguity type nor meaning dominance significantly affected the processing latencies of the non-native speakers (NNSs) and native speakers (NSs) in context. The results suggest that the nature of lexical access to the meanings of the lexically ambiguous words in L2 learners is selective as long as the word is presented in a sentential context.

Full textLa mia dissertazione approfondisce alcuni temi della filosofia di Aristotele, utilizzando come un privilegiato punto di partenza l’interpretazione funzionalistica sviluppata da Hilary Putnam e Martha C. Nussbaum. Nel primo capitolo analizzo alcune famiglie di interpretazioni della “psychologia” Aristotele proposte nella seconda metà del Novecento nel contesto della filosofia della mente contemporanea. Mostro come alcuni aspetti del pensiero di Aristotele, correttamente colti dall’interpretazione dualista e da quella fisicalista, siano stati ripresi e armonizzati dal funzionalismo in una dottrina coerente. Nel secondo capitolo si rende necessaria un’analisi dell’ilemorfismo di Aristotele. Prendo perciò in analisi l’omonimia, tradizionalmente concepita come contrastante con l’ilemorfismo. Mostro non solo come l’omonimia sia piuttosto una conseguenza dell’ilemorfismo, ma anche come essa permetta di evidenziare che l’ilemorfismo, se concepito correttamente, debba essere considerato una tesi ontologica con conseguenze predicative. A questo proposito, propongo una mia definizione di ilemorfismo. Nel terzo capitolo analizzo la causalità finale di Aristotele, ponendola a confronto con il naturalismo contemporaneo. Sostengo che la teleologia dimostri l’anti-riduzionismo di Aristotele e, in particolare, il fatto che egli attribuisca efficacia causale alle forme e ai fini presenti in natura. Critico il funzionalismo per aver concepito le cause formale e finale di Aristotele una mera natura esplicativa mentre, al contrario, essa per Aristotele deriva dal loro genuino ruolo causale. Formulo tale interpretazione in una posizione che denomino “compatibilismo logico”. Accenno come l’analisi funzionale dell’organismo vivente possa stabilire alcuni punti di contatto tra l’analisi di Aristotele e quella di Darwin. In conclusione, riconosco al funzionalismo di aver correttamente individuato i ruoli funzionali che Aristotele attribuisce a materia e forma, nonché di averli tradotti in una valida dottrina filosofica. Tuttavia, rimanendo confinato nel contesto della filosofia della mente contemporanea, il funzionalismo manca di rilevare l’effettiva portata del naturalismo anti-riduzionista di Aristotele per quanto riguarda la vita biologica e la natura in generale.

Full textSaccadic eye movements are rapid and necessary to targeting the interesting object in our visual environment. Despite the crucial role of the occipital cortex in the visual process, its implication in the saccadic generation is poorly studied. To examine this, we can use one pathological model, the homonymous hemianopia (i.e. loss of contralateral visual hemifield to unilateral occipital lesion). Despite the loss of conscious vision, some patients can be able to react at one stimulus presented in the contralesional hemifield. These residual abilities, named blindsight, can be observed in attentional and/or motor tasks. The aim of this thesis is examine the parameters of saccades in hemianopic patients, through the study of saccade types (voluntary and reflexive saccades) and classical effects on the modulation of saccadic parameters (gap effect and distractor effects, by manipulating the spatial and temporal characteristics of the fixation point, the target or a distractor). Furthermore, the residual abilities are investigated by perceptual tasks (detection or discrimination) with different types of response: verbal, manual (key press) and motor (saccade or fixation). Overall, despite the loss of conscious perception of the target presented in the contralesional hemifield, residual abilities are found as showed by the saccadic execution toward the target, with a dichotomy depending on the need to perform an action on the visual stimulation. This suggests that the role of the occipital cortex is not the same in the selection mechanism for the action and the perception. Concerning to saccadic programming, dissociation is found in the saccadic parameters. The saccadic initiation, studied by with the saccade latency, is altered in both ipsi- and contralesional hemifields but the saccade metric, studied by the saccade amplitude, is altered in the contralesional hemifield. This suggests that the occipital cortex is implicated in the saccade generation and that saccade programing involves two pathways for the initiation and the metric of saccades

Full textVisual mental imagery is usually accompanied by spontaneous eye movements that are not random but reflect the spatial content of the imagery. The main objective of this thesis was to use eye movements recording in order to explore the mechanisms, the dynamics, the reference frames and the neural processes of spatial representations in healthy subjects and brain damaged patients.We recorded eye movements during the verbal recall of french cities from long-term memory, either through mental imagery of the map of France, or through a semantic access (verbal fluency task). This paradigm was carried out in three different situations: In healthy subjects with free gaze, in healthy subjects with fixed gaze and in patients with unilateral spatial neglect and / or homonymous hemianopia with free gaze. Using bi-dimensional regression (BDR) between ocular positions when cities were evoked and GPS positions of these cities, we could provide an individual analysis in each of these three situations.In healthy subjects with free gaze, we demonstrated that mental imagery is built sequentially and fragmented, and that significant correlation is a signature, at an individual level, of the use of visual imagery. In healthy subjects with central gaze fixation, we have demonstrated that the remaining microsaccades still reflect the spatial content of the imagery in most individuals. In patients with hemineglect, the mental representation of the map of France was disturbed both in the allocentric reference frame (lack of spatial coherence for cities of the left side) and in the egocentric reference frame (mental map shifted ipsilesionally). In subjects with hemianopia, the mental image was shifted contralesionally but was spatially coherent in the allocentric frame.These results are discussed in the light of the different theories on eye movements and mental imagery found in the literature and in particular with respect to the Kosslyn model of imagery in which the primary visual cortex (damaged in hemianopia) corresponds to the substratum of the visual buffer and the right parieto-frontal network to the substratum of the the attentional window and the spatial properties processing system

Full textIn the introduction we presented the theory of the matrix and etymons and the development of the theory as wel as the matrix and we have identified untel now. Then we studied the phono-semantic correlation [+ approximant] , [+ continuant], "bring something to him self" in arabic, withch allowed us to organize the conceptual field of this phono-semantic correlation. Afterwards we searched for the terms which include a (guttural) and (+ continuant). And we found that the guttural exhibit the same proprieties us the approximant "r" and "l". In the second chapter we searched for the same proprieties in hebrew. We studied the development of the etymon in hebrew. We performed a first despoliation to look for the terms which include "r" and "l" with (+ continuant), then we made second despoliation concerning the gutturals (+ continuant). In the third chapter we explained the disambiguation of the terms which realize the phono-semantic correlation. In the forth chapter, we proceeded to the reorganization of the lexicon realizing the phono-semantic correlation [+ approximant], [+ continuant] "bring something to himself". We provided the list of the verbs of the Kazimir database which were analyzed and reorganized us a realization of the phono-semantic correlation that we studied

Full textThis work defends the « thesis » in the full sense of the word. It is aimed at the radical revision of the traditional concept of lexical derivation in moderne Russian, which keeps only two modes of derivation and two only ones : prefixation and suffixation. The dissertation defends the idea that besides these two ways of word-formation, there is the third – word-formation by means of a discontinuous morpheme, which some linguists call “Circonfixe” and which is called here “Confixe”. The dissertation highlights the contradictions of the traditional approach which considers nouns such as podokonnik (pod + ok(o)n +nik : ‘under’ + ‘window’ + ‘object’ = window sill) or verbs like nabegat’sja (‘satiation’ + ‘to run’ + ‘reflexive’ = ‘to be run’) as prefixally-suffixal or prefixally-postfixal formations. It underlines that we are dealing here with confixes for the first word, for the second. Argumentation is based on a large material taken from the historical and contemporary dictionaries. The abundance of the collected data imposed to limit the research to nouns and verbs. The diachronic examination proves that confixes (discontinuous morphemes) have gradually taken their place in word-formation system. In moderne Russian confixation is really an independent way of word-formation

Full textTraditional grammairiens underlined the existence in Arabic language of a vocabulary characterized by an opposed or a contradictory significance, which they called the adâds (enantiosemics). This lexicon was intentionally listed in dictionnaries by Arabic philologists to be preserved as a linguistic richness. It was a long time later that orientalists thought about enantiosemy. This conception, newly introduced in the occidental reflexion of the twentieth century, had first served one of the major theories of Freud in that the existence of this entity economically fills the gap in the reflexion between language and the inconscious. Nevertheless, the coexistence of two opposed meanings under the same linguistic item is a big constraint for contemporary linguistics. Is it an exceptional characteristic of Arabic language ? The present study is an attempt to account for this phenomena of sens using the methodology put forward by MER. It is shown that many aspects revealed by analyses undergone within the model of etymon, matrix can be a linguistic description. It sets some phonetico-semantic correlations accounting thus, for some problematic issues, unresolved so far, such as polysemy, homonymy, and enantiosemy
