Abstract:
Postoje studentů k jejich odlišně orientovaným nebo genderově nestereotypním vrstevníkům jsou tématem celé řady cizojazyčných studií. Nejčastěji však byl řešen kontext terciárního vzdělávání, který poukázal nejen na nutnost se ostrakizací odlišně orientovaných studentů zabývat, ale prokázal i mnohé determinanty, které se ukázaly jako významné při tvorbě negativních postojů vůči homosexuálům. Předkládaná studie se zabývá výzkumem postojů žáků nižšího sekundárního vzdělávání k homosexualitě. V teoretické části poukazujeme na historický kontext vývoje předsudků vůči homosexualitě a věnujeme se rovněž úvodem do již proběhlých studií a výzkumů postojům k homosexualitě na různých stupních vzdělávání. Následně je předkládáno výzkumné šetření, v rámci kterého bylo pomocí standardizovaného dotazníku osloveno 316 žáků 8. a 9. tříd či tercie a kvarty na víceletých gymnáziích. I když jsou výsledky v průměru pozitivní, více než 7 % žáků stále zastává vysoce až extrémně negativní postoje k homosexuálům. Statistická významnost byla prokázána pro proměnnou pohlaví (muži zastávají negativnější postoje; hladina účinku 26 %), druh homosexuality (mužská homosexualita je vnímána negativněji) či typ navštěvované školy (žáci základních škol zastávají negativnější postoje).

Abstract:
Cílem studie je zhodnotit postoje studentů pedagogicky orientovaných studijních programů k homosexualitě a zjistit, čím jsou ovlivněny. V příspěvku je argumentován význam tématu v rámci pedagogiky, podán přehled závěrů vybraných českých a zahraničních výzkumů vztahujících se k problematice postojů heterosexuálů k homosexualitě. Dále jsou prezentovány cíle, metodologie a poznatky z vlastního výzkumného šetření. V závěru jsou prezentována doporučení pro pregraduální vzdělávání budoucích pedagogů a podány návrhy pro další výzkum. Cílem výzkumu bylo zjistit postoje studentů pedagogicky orientovaných studijních programů k homosexualitě. Použitým výzkumným nástrojem byl dotazník Kiteové a Deauxové – Homosexuality Attitude Scale (Cronbachovo alfa = 0,91). Sběr dat proběhl v říjnu a listopadu 2014. Výběrový soubor je tvořen 1 140 respondenty. Studenti pedagogických studijních programů mají v průměrném hodnocení k homosexualitě poměrně pozitivní postoje (průměrné skóre HAS = 88,77 z teoretického rozmezí 12–105, nižší hodnota indikuje negativnější postoj k homosexualitě). Signifikantně negativnější postoje k homosexualitě byly zjištěny u mužů, studentů nižších ročníků studia a příslušníků římsko-katolické či jiné církve nebo náboženské společnosti. Z poznatků vyplývá potřeba formování postojů budoucích pedagogů k homosexualitě kombinací kognitivně-afektivních intervencí v rámci formálního vzdělávání.

Abstract:
In 1999, Lola und Bilidikid emerged as the creative product of Turkish-born director, Kutluğ Ataman, and provided a rare example and highly nuanced exploration of homosexuality in a Turkish-German context. This article explores the film’s representation of a group of characters marginalised not only on the level of their cultural background, but also on the level of sexual identity. Through a close analysis of the film, various demonstrations of and responses to homosexuality as a sub-culture within a patriarchal, migrant (and therefore already marginalised) group will also be explored, including particularly the notions of drag and performance. These responses will be analysed from the perspective of the protagonists, who are themselves not only both gay and of Turkish origin, but also demonstrate almost fundamentally conflicting approaches to homosexuality. This is particularly evident in the varying degrees to which they either accept or reject their own homosexuality. The article will also explore the consequences of the acceptance and rejection of their respective homosexualities and the extent to which this informs the construction and/or perpetuation of a particular performance of masculinity.

Este artículo sintetiza una investigación acerca de las narrativas sobre la homosexualidad, en un grupo de niños y niñas escolarizados, con edades entre los 8 y 11 años, de la ciudad de Ibagué (Colombia). Adopta el método cualitativo, desde el paradigma comprensivo-interpretativo y la Epistemología del sujeto conocido. Particularmente, acude a la narrativa de enfoque temático con el objetivo de develar los discursos sociales en el conjunto de narrativas emergentes alrededor del tema. Se emplean distintas técnicas cualitativas que, recreadas a través del juego lúdico, posibilitan la emergencia dialógica de las narrativas y la construcción colectiva del conocimiento sobre la homosexualidad, como temática no abordada desde el punto de vista infantil en el mundo académico. Los hallazgos plantean un complejo entramado narrativo que se dinamiza constantemente entre Discursos esencialistas heteronormativos y Discursos de reconocimiento y de derechos humanos, sobre la homosexualidad. Constituyen miradas múltiples y contradictorias sobre el tema, apartadas de una lógica polarizante. Se sugiere una ruta ontológica, epistemológica y metodológica para el abordaje educativo de la sexualidad, que favorezca la construcción colectiva del conocimiento y la emergencia del niño y la niña como sujetos narrativos, éticos y políticos.

Cette thèse porte sur une période qui va de la mort de Franco, en 1975, à la légalisation du mariage homosexuel en 2005. Sa source essentielle est la presse, notamment deux journaux aux orientations idéologiques opposées, à savoir El País et ABC. Le but du premier chapitre est à la fois de montrer ce qu’il en fut du rejet et de l’acceptation des réalités homosexuelles en Espagne, entre 1975 et 2005, aussi bien dans les textes que dans la vie quotidienne et d’expliquer pourquoi l’évolution de ces deux derniers n’est que partiellement comparable nonobstant leurs interactions en raison - en partie - des limites de la dichotomie « rejet et acceptation » sur un tel sujet, dans un tel pays et durant une telle période. Ces limites constituent l’objet du deuxième chapitre consacré justement aux faits à propos desquels il est difficile de dire clairement s’ils relèvent du rejet ou de l’acceptation - parce qu’ils témoignent d’un simple intérêt pour la question, d’une représentation réductrice des réalités homosexuelles faute - parfois - de connaissances suffisantes en la matière. This thesis covers a period which begins at the death of Franco, in 1975, and finishes at the legalization of the homosexual marriage, in 2005. Its principal source is the Spanish press, first of all two newspapers whith opposite ideological leanings : El País and ABC. The aim of the first chapter is both to show which forms the rejection and the acceptance of the homosexual realities took in Spain between 1975 and 2005, in the texts and in daily life and to explain why the evolutions of these two aspects of the topic can only be partially comparable in spite of their interactions partially because of the limits of the dichotomy “Rejection and Acceptance” about such a topic, in such a country and during such a period. These limits are the object of the second chapter particularly dedicated to the facts for which it’s difficult to say if they are part of the rejection or part of the acceptance - because they can just show an interest in the topic, a simplistic representation of the homosexual realities sometimes in absence of a sufficient knowledge of them. Consequently, the third chapter consists in explaining how this aporia can be surmounted taking into consideration the linguistic and ontological dimension of the issues of this thesis, first of all in a country like Spain which went through a period of transition, between 1975 and 2005, in terms of relations to the homosexuality, provoking a sort of war of the essences which, rapidly, didn’t concern any longer the existence of homosexuality itself

Abstract:
LGBT people, in Uganda, have since the colonial time been in a vulnerable situation. When the President signed the “Anti-Homosexuality Act” into law 2014 all forms of same-sex relationships became criminalized. The time after the law passed have been characterized by an increased homophobia and further violence against LGBT people. These are seen as deviants since they do not live according to the social norms, that the right thing to be is heterosexual. They are considered “non-African” and by some an “infectious agent” that will destroy the traditional African family, which is one of society’s most important functions. Except from the fact that LGBT people are persecuted and mistreated they are also denied access to health care and information. The purpose of this study is to explain LGBT persons’ situation and rights in Uganda, mainly based on the “Anti-Homosexuality Act”. This law is reviewed against the ratified conventions, charters and similar laws. This is then related to the theory of heteronormativity, which seems to dominate the Ugandan society. The used methods are case study and conceptual analysis, that provided a deeper and surveying understanding of what this study intended to process.

La recherche sur le thème des homosexualités féminimes consiste d'une part à dégager les problématiques principales dans l'homosexualité et d'autre part à saisir sa diversité en mettant à l'épreuve l'hypothèse de la variabilité des organisations psychiques chez l'homosexuelle. Il s'agit de comprendre les modalités de la construction d'une homosexualité stabilisée chez les femmes ayant nettement dépassé la période de l'adolescence. De façon transnosographique, cette recherche permet d'approcher la question d'aménagements pervers féminins, poursuivant ainsi la réflexion sur la sexualité féminine en général. Les enjeux féminins de la pratique de l'homosexualité chez les femmes sont interrogés. La relation d'une femme à une autre femme pourrait prendre racine dans le dégagement de problématiques issues de la psychosexualité féminine, en particulier le traitement de la haine et de la culpabilité, et ceci dans des registres différents. Un appoint de masochisme, dans le contexte d'une recherche d'intégration pulsionnelle, pourrait servir à l'élaboration du féminin, lui même susceptible de contenir des mouvements destructeurs. Comment les singularités du développement psychosexuel de la fille peuvent être traitées dans l'homosexualité et à quelle condition elles pourraient se trouver dégageantes? Est-ce qu'on peut considérer le modèle du sacrifice pour penser les relations entre femmes? Ces questions sont mises à l'épreuve à partir de la clinique projective (Rorschach et TAT) et la clinique d'entretien. La population rencontrée est constituée de 28 femmes de 25 à 45 ans qui se déclarent homosexuelles
This research on female homosexuality is two-fold: it discerns the principal issues in homosexuality; it also outlines its diversity by testing the hypothesis of a variability in the psychic organisations of lesbians. The point is to understand the modalities of a stabilised homosexuality in women well above teenage years. Covering all the psychic structures, this thesis adresses feminine perverse adjustments, thereby advancing the study of feminine sexuality in general. It also interrogates the feminine stakes in the practice of homosexuality in women. Same-sex female relationships could stem from various strategies to overcome feminine psychosexuality issues, in particular hatred and guilt. Masochism could be an additional building block, while integrating pulsions, to elaborate the feminine, which is in itself liable to generate destructive movements. How can the singularities in a woman's psychosexual development be approached in homosexuality? On which terms can the provide a solution? Is the sacrifice model relevant when considering lesbian relationships? These questions are addressed using the projective technique (Rorchach and TAT), and clinical interviews. Abstract:
This essay treats the subject of homosexuality in Young Adult literature, this is done by a comparative book-study from the British author Aidan Chambers book Dance on my grave (1982) and the Swedish author Anna Ahlunds book Du, bara (2016). Both books have a homosexual protagonist as their main character. Through these writers, this essay provides an insight of how the view of homosexuality is in young adult’s literature and the importance of the anti-oppressive pedagogy use in education for upper secondary school. These two books have been assayed on an anti-oppressive perspective based on homosexuality. The heteronormativity that are found around us are presented differently in the books. In Ahlund's book, the heteronormativity is created as non-existent in an alternate world, while in Chambers's book it shines through in different meetings with society and the prevailing norms. The different ways of dealing with homosexuality in relation to the outside world's norms also become interesting from a historical perspective where the acceptance and rights of gay men differ greatly. This is evidenced by the choice of words as well as the way in which homosexuality is presented. One conclusion of the essay is that conscious anti-oppressive pedagogy is important in teaching to promote equal treatment work where students are accepted for their independence from sexual orientation. By consciously using books, book reviews and work from books that raise the issue of the world’s norm critical views of homosexuals in the education. By doing so we’re able to raise the awareness of the anti-oppressive view of homosexuals and thus affecting the norm to something more positive in school and hopefully in the young adult’s everyday life after school.
Uppsatsen behandlar ämnet homosexualitet i ungdomslitteraturen genom en komparativ litteraturstudie som gjorts på böckerna Du, bara av svenska författaren Anna Ahlund och Dansa på min grav av brittiska Aidan Chambers. Båda böckerna behandlar protagonister som är homosexuella och uppsatsen syftar till att visa hur homosexualiteten framställs ur ett normkritiskt perspektiv. Syftet med uppsatsen är också att lyfta vikten av ett normkritiskt perspektiv i undervisningen ur ett didaktiskt perspektiv främst på gymnasienivå. Dessa två böcker har granskats utifrån ett normkritiskt perspektiv med utgångspunkt från homosexualiteten. Heteronormen som finns runt omkring oss presenteras i böckerna olika. I Ahlunds bok är heteronormen skapad som icke-existerande i en alternativ värld medan den i Chambers bok lyser igenom vid olika möten med samhället och de rådande normerna. Böckernas olika sätt att bemöta homosexualiteten i relation till omvärldens normer blir även intressant ur ett historiskt perspektiv där acceptansen och rättigheterna för homosexuella skiljer sig mycket. Detta syns såväl genom ordval som sättet homosexualiteten presenteras. En slutsats av uppsatsen är att ett medvetet normkritiskt perspektiv är viktigt i undervisningen för att främja likabehandlingsarbete där elever blir accepterade för den de är oberoende av sexuell läggning. Genom att medvetet använda böcker som lyfter normkritiska aspekter kan man genom boksamtal och arbete med böcker och texter arbeta normkritiskt och på så sätt påverka de rådande normerna till något mer positivt i skolan och förhoppningsvis även i det livslånga lärandet och livet.

Gay sexuality is seen as a great sin and consequently punishable in several countries in parts of the Muslim community’s. Homosexual persons are being subjected to related violence and dignity because of the expression of their gender, sexuality or honorary norms. The purpose of this paper is to find out how homosexual Muslims living in the city of Umeå unite their sexual orientation with their beliefs and see if they believe Islam as a religious obstacle   or if there are other cultural phenomena that prevent them from ”coming out”   The result of this study shows that the majority of the interviewed people do not see religion as an obstacle to their sexual orientation, by questioning the hadith statements of trust. Respondents argue that Hadith literature came a long way after the death of Prophet Muhammad. The majority of the interviewed claims that the Hadith literature is human constructions that were written down long after the death of Prophet Muhammad.

Bakgrund: Historiskt sett har människor som levt i samkönade relationer haft en sårbar situation i samhället och ofta blivit utsatta för diskriminering. I Sverige finns idag en lag som förbjuder diskriminering relaterat till sexuell läggning. Målet med hälso- sjukvårdslagen är att hela befolkningen ska ha en jämlik hälsa. Trots detta uppskattar de som lever i en samkönad relation att de har en sämre hälsa än övrig befolkning. Inom vården föreligger ofta ett heteronormativt förhållningssätt, vilket kan leda till osäkerhet för familjer med en annan konstellation än den heterosexuella. Syfte: Syftet med denna uppsats var därför att beskriva hur familjer där föräldrarna lever i en samkönad relation upplevde möten i vården. Metod: För att beskriva detta gjordes en kvalitativ innehållsanalys med deskriptiv ansats av 9 kvalitativa vetenskapliga studier och en enkätstudie. Detta diskuterades sedan utifrån Lévinas teori om den Andre. Resultat: Resultatet som framkom var att de flesta positiva upplevelserna grundade sig i en trygghet, vilken var sprungen ur en acceptans från vårdens sida. De negativa upplevelserna tenderade att genomsyras av ett känslomässigt utanförskap, som i sin tur ledde till en ökad sårbarhet. Slutsats: För att alla familjer ska känna sig lika välkomna och självklara kan vården troligen bidra genom att möta varje individ och familj med öppet sinne, utan några antaganden och värderingar gällande deras livssituation. Då personal ställer öppna frågor och är bekväma med svaren, kan det troligtvis underlätta för alla familjer att vara ärliga med sin situation.
Background: Historically, people in same-sex relationships, have had a vulnerable position in society and are often victims of discrimination. In Sweden there is a law that prohibits discrimination related to sexual orientation. The aim of the health care law is that the entire population should have an equal health. Despite this, the selfrated heath of those who live in a same-sex relationship is often lower than the rest of the population. In healthcare, there is often a heteronormative approach, which can lead to uncertainty for families with a different constellation than heterosexuals. Aim: The aim of this study was therefore to describe how families with parents who lives in same-sex realtionship experienced meeting within health care. Method: To describe this, a qualitative content analysis with descriptive approach of 10 scientific articles were done. This was then discussed by Levinas's theory of the Other. Results: The results that emerged were that most positive experiences were based in a comfortness, which was born out of an acceptance from the healthcare side. The adverse experiences tended to be imbued with an emotional alienation, which in turn to an increased vulnerability. Conclusion: For all families to feel welcome and obvious, it would probably be helpful if health personell should meet each individual and family with an open mind, without making any assumptions on their lives. As the personell makes open questions and are comfortable with the answers, it might make it easier for all families to be honest with their situation.

Att vara homosexuell och att resa kan ge upphov till många problem trots uppfattningen att en homonormativitet håller på att utvecklas i dagens samhällen. Inom ramen för denna uppsats undersöks homosexuella svenskars upplevelser och behov som turister. Perspektivet intersektionalitet har tillämpats för att se eventuella privilegier och förtryck hos homosexuella män och kvinnor i en turismkontext. De metodiska angreppssätten är kvalitativa mejlintervjuer där ett snöbollsurval applicerats samt en temaanalys för att analysera respondenternas svar. Uppsatser har visat att när personerna reser till icke-gayvänliga destinationer och utrymmen blir de utsatta för förtryck i olika former. Både män och kvinnor reflekterar över sin säkerhet vid val av destinationer och i viss mån undviker att resa till vissa länder. Kvinnor avsäger behovet av specifika produkter och tjänster som homosexuella, medan männen bejakar gaykulturen. Kvinnor, i detta fall, kan vara mer benägna att utsättas för förtryck i många olika perspektiv. I viss mån anser författarna att ett heteronormativt förtryck existerar i dagens turism och att det är ett långsiktigt arbete för att rå bukt med de problem som homosexuella utsätts för.
Being gay and to travel can give rise to many problems despite the perception that a homonormativity is evolving in today's societies. Within the scope of this paper it examines homosexual Swedes' experiences and needs as tourists. The perspective of intersectionality has been applied to distinguish privilege and oppression of gay men and women in a tourism context. The methodological approaches are qualitative e-mail interviews with a snowball sample and a thematic analysis to analyze the respondents' answers. This paper has shown that when people are traveling to non-gay-friendly destinations and spaces they’re subjected to repression in various forms. Both men and women reflect on their safety when choosing destinations and to some extent avoid traveling to certain countries. Women disclaim their needs of specific products and services as homosexuals, while the men affirm the gay culture. Women, in this case, may be more likely to be subjected to oppression in many different perspectives. To some extent, the authors consider that a heteronormative oppression exist in today's tourism and it is a long-term effort to overcome the problems that homosexuals are subjected to.

Grâce à l'attention portée aux sources narcissiques précoces de l'Idéal et à l'adoption d'une conception de la dangerosité de la passivité pulsionnelle en termes d'un contre-balancement des investissements narcissiques, l'étude est arrivée à construire et mettre à l'épreuve l'hypothèse selon laquelle les relations homosexuelles peuvent se mettre au service d'une stratégie de défense à l'égard des angoisses sexuelles et narcissiques archai͏̈ques, et ceci à travers une sexualisation "secondaire" dont les éléments narcissiques visent à la fois à se substituer aux fonctions identitaires et de pare-excitation de l'idéal et à réguler la valeur narcissique de l'objet. Initially this study intended to explain different phenomena related to homosexuality by associating them to a specific form of Ideal Structure, and to make this structure a distinctive feature of the psychic organisation of homosexuals. The fact that the first formulations articulated these psychic domains in a very global and inefficient way lead the study to inquire after those characteristics of homosexual relations concerning the Ideal and narcissistic aspects of the psychic economy. The attention paid to early narcissistic sources of the Ideal and the assumption that passive drives can become dangerous depending on the balance of the narcissistic cathexis, lead the study to construct and confirm an hypothesis which asserts that homosexual relations serve as a defence against archaic anxieties (sexual and narcissistic). This strategy is carried out by a "secondary" sexualisation, the narcissistic elements of which aim to substitute the identitary and pare-excitations functions of the Ideal, and to regulate the narcissistic value of the object. In that way, helped by the analysis of the literary and biographic materials of Violette Leduc and Jean Genet, the study confirms that homosexual object-choice depends on idealising projections of a primitive narcissism. It is also proved that homosexual relations attempt to replace failed identifications and internalisations in order to restore a never achieved homeostasis. It is found as well that the "barrier-object," which some homosexuals employ, does not imply an active phallic position. And that the same role can be played by a passive position. Finally it seems that the various forms adopted by the homosexual solutions are displayed around two axes: melancholy-paranoiac and masochist-psychopath

L'objectif de cette recherche est d'étudier, chez les sportifs, les déterminants des attitudes envers l'homosexualité. Au regard des niveaux de Doise, il est attendu la proposition d’un modèle prédictif des déterminants à différents niveaux : intra personnel, interpersonnel, positionnel et idéologique. Le travail comporte 4 volets : 1) une étude préliminaire auprès de 322 personnes permettant la validation d'un outil de mesure des attitudes envers les gays et les lesbiennes, 2) une étude auprès de 1002 sportifs analysant les déterminants des attitudes notamment en distinguant le sport masculin et le sport féminin, 3) une étude sur la mise au jour des normes envers l'homosexualité, 4) une étude auprès de 572 footballeurs proposant un modèle prédictif des attitudes envers les gays et les lesbiennes, incluant le rôle de l’entraineur et des processus collectifs. Dans l'ensemble, les résultats indiquent une nette différence dans l'acceptation de l'homosexualité en fonction du sexe. La normativité est le principal prédicteur des attitudes, tendant vers une grande acceptation chez les femmes et une conservation de l'hétérosexisme chez les hommes. Ainsi, dans le cadre du sport masculin, l'homosexualité apparaît comme un stigmate non protégé, lié directement à la dynamique de groupe. De plus, l’hétérosexisme est étroitement lié au sexisme, à la religion et au racisme. En ce sens, il paraît primordial de mettre en place des actions de sensibilisation et de formations auprès des athlètes et des entraîneurs. Ces actions pourront s’effectuer sous l’angle général de la gestion de la diversité dans le sport
The objective of this research is to study, among athletes, determinants of attitudes towards homosexuality. With respect to levels of Doise, it is expected the proposal of a predictive model of the determinants at different levels: intrapersonal, interpersonal, positional and ideological.The work consists of 4 components: 1) a preliminary study of 322 people for the validation of a tool for measuring attitudes toward gays and lesbians, 2) a survey of 1002 athletes analyzing the determinants of attitudes toward homosexuals, distinguishing men's sports and women's sports, 3) a study on the discovery social norms towards homosexuality in sport, 4) a survey of 572 football players offering a predictive model of attitudes toward gays and lesbians, including the role of the trainer and group processes.Overall, the results indicate a clear difference between women and men athletes in the acceptance of homosexuality. Normativity is the main predictor of attitudes, tending towards a greater acceptance among women and preservation of heterosexism in men. Thus, in the masculine sport, homosexuality appears unprotected stigma directly related to group dynamics. In addition, heterosexism is closely related to sexism, racism and religion.In this sense, it seems important to develop awareness and training with athletes and coaches. These actions may be carried out under the general terms of the management of diversity in sport

The French composer Francis Poulenc had a profound admiration and empathy for the writings of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. That empathy was rooted in shared aspects of the artistic temperament of the two figures but was also undoubtedly reinforced by Poulenc’s fellow-feeling on a human level. As someone who wrestled with his own homosexuality and who kept his orientation and his relationships apart from his public persona, Poulenc would have felt an instinctive affinity for a figure who endured similar internal conflicts but who, especially in his later life and poetry, was more open about his sexuality. Lorca paid a heavy price for this refusal to dissimulate; his arrest in August 1936 and his assassination the following day, probably by Nationalist militia, was accompanied by taunts from his killers about his sexuality. Everything about the Spanish poet’s life, his artistic affinities, his personal predilections and even the relationship between these and his death made him someone to whom Poulenc would be naturally drawn and whose untimely demise he would feel keenly and might wish to commemorate musically. Starting with the death of both his parents while he was still in his teens, reinforced by the sudden loss in 1930 of an especially close friend, confidante and kindred spirit, and continuing throughout the remainder of his life with the periodic loss of close friends, companions and fellow-artists, Poulenc’s life was marked by a succession of bereavements. Significantly, many of the dedications that head up his compositions are ‘to the memory of’ the individual named. As Poulenc grew older, and the list of those whom he had outlived lengthened inexorably, his natural tendency towards the nostalgic and the elegiac fused with a growing sense of what might be termed a ‘survivor’s anguish’, part of which he sublimated into his musical works. It should therefore come as no surprise that, during the 1940s, and in fulfilment of a desire that he had felt since the poet’s death, he should turn to Lorca for inspiration and, in the process, attempt his own act of homage in two separate works: the Violin Sonata and the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’. This exposition attempts to unfold aspects of the two men’s aesthetic pre-occupations and to show how the parallels uncovered cast reciprocal light upon their respective approaches to the creative process. It also examines the network of enfolded associations, musical and autobiographical, which link Poulenc’s two compositions commemorating Lorca, not only to one another but also to a wider circle of the composer’s works, especially his cycle setting poems of Guillaume Apollinaire: ‘Calligrammes’. Composed a year after the ‘Trois Chansons de Federico García Lorca’, this intricately wrought collection of seven mélodies, which Poulenc saw as the culmination of an intensive phase in his activity in this genre, revisits some of ‘unheard voices’ and ‘unseen shadows’ enfolded in its predecessor. It may be viewed, in part, as an attempt to bring to fuller resolution the veiled but keenly-felt anguish invoked by these paradoxical properties.
