Full textDropping out of school can seriously affect employment possibilities and social integration. There are tools to investigate and measure the level of risk of dropping out. Academic performances and behaviour problems are well documented risk factors. Impulsivity and risk taking can lead to problematic behaviour. Certain studies have looked into the impact of stress on the dropping out process, but its impact on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking has never been evaluated directly with the risk level of dropping out. Objective and hypothesis : The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of stress on academic performances, impulsivity and risk taking and to measure the relation of this impact with the risk level of dropping out of school. The hypothesis is that higher the risk level, higher the negative impact stress will have on our measures of academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking. Method : 37 young adults between 15 and 20 years old with no diploma took part in the study. After measuring the risk level of dropping out, a full characterization was made followed by academic performance, impulsivity and risk taking tasks before and after a social stress condition, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Results : Our salivary cortisol samples show that the TSST did not produce a significant change in levels of stress to adequately test our hypothesis. Our results show a significant interaction between impulsivity and the risk level of dropping out. Furthermore, the relation between risk taking and impulsivity in our results is interesting Conclusion : The objective of this project could not be adequately tested since the stress condition didn't produce a significant stress reaction, as measured by salivary cortisol. The level of risk of dropping out was significantly correlated with impulsivity, but not risk taking, nor academic performances.

Full textIn this master thesis, we are interested in the relationship between domestic material culture and the conception of the identity amongst Aboriginal women recently immigrated to Quebec City, an area of study that is attracting growing interest in a large number of disciplines. So far only a few studies have addressed these issues via observations on women in urban areas. We explore thus the universe of everyday objects of Aboriginal women in this place of solace, meditation and encounter with oneself which is the new city home. For these Aboriginal women in migration from rural to urban settings, domestic objects are important vectors of personal and collective identity. Through interviews, we try to understand the identity status of these objects, their arrangement in space, and the power and scope of their uses by Aboriginal women residing in Quebec City. The indigenous women we interviewed still keep most of their inherited traditional objects that carry with them the traditional Aboriginal values, such as sharing and non-competitiveness. These values are often in conflict with those of the dominant society, such as consumerism and individualism, which can gradually slowdown and disregard the recognition of Aboriginal heritage and self-identification process of these women. However, some women continue to use their traditional objects and to participate in traditional activities that represent a link with their aboriginal communities and values.

Full textMore and more, researchers in the field of education are acknowledging the hard times that constitute the early years of teaching practice in Québec, and worry about premature leaves of novice teachers. The research here presented seeks to offer a better understanding of this crucial moment of integration in the teaching profession, and to examine the determinants that can influence novices to persevere or to abandon this professional field. To do so, attrition of novice teachers is not only considered as a probable outcome of the insertion process, but as a process on its own, the opposite equivalent of this insertion. By thorough analysis of twenty-two professional trajectories of beginning teachers who have persevered in teaching (eleven trajectories), as well as novices who have chosen to redirect their career during their first in-service years (eleven trajectories), we observed the dominant interrelations between factors inherent to individuals and factors belonging to the education system as a structure that influence the choice to continue or to quit teaching. We found that in many cases, interactions are further driven by individual elements whereas in some other cases, elements of the context, which are independent of the social players, appeared to be the leading force of the decision process. Nevertheless, all the factors involved in the decision-making of the novices we met implied dynamics inherent to both actors and structures. Six types of interrelations have emerged from the study. They show that many elements pertaining to the identity of young teachers, such as career choice and realism of expectations created before and often maintained during pre-service training, the degree of adequacy felt between the novice on one hand and the mandates and the structural organization of education on the other hand, the ways of being and reacting during the early teaching experiences, and the relative importance attached to the field of work versus other fields of life (especially family and children), play important roles in the decision process of some participants regarding their professional teaching project. Concerning the elements of context, employment parameters (time needed to get a stable status), work parameters (working conditions, workloads, mandates, composition of the class) and environment parameters (particularly support received from other staff and principal) also have a noticeable influence on the choices made by the subjects interviewed in regards to continuing in the teaching profession, or leaving it.

Full text"Computational journalism is the application of computing [...] to the activities of journalism including information gathering, organization and sensemaking, communication and presentation, and dissemination and public response to news information, all while upholding core values of journalism" (Diakopoulos, 2010). This study, based on a series of 30 semi-structured interviews with journalists, managers, but also data and computer scientists (in order to get a point of view from outside journalism), provides a characterization of computational journalism as it is practised in 2015 in the Canadian province of Québec. Two prevailing attitudes towards computational journalism are expressed through different types of boundary work. On one hand, some respondents think journalism and computer science are two separate fields, each with their own professionals. Another group of respondents feels, on the other hand, that both disciplines should blend into a hybrid profession with its own, distinct, "professional territory". This research dives into the motivations, the necessary skills and workflows of Québec computational journalists, and argues they contribute to a re-professionalization of journalism. In addition, recent developments in the medical profession in Quebec are characterized by increasing feminization. These indicators are calling for reforms to improve the efficiency of health services. The study on general practitioners’ productivity through their careers can help inform policy on appropriate reforms. We have a panel data combining survey and administrative data on Quebec practitioner physicians. The maximum likelihood estimation shows that general practitioners’ productivity is based on their experiences, evolves approximately as a bell curve with a plateau between the slice’s ages of 35 and 65. Men are on average more productive than women with a difference ranging from 15 to 49%. Keywords: productivity, work experience, general practitioners.

Full textThis PhD project aims to reflect and analyse how three generations of women refugees are exposed, identify themselves, takes ownership of the media discourse and then discuss them. In other words, it was discussed how identify through intergenerational networks, women transmit, create, and update the knowledge learned from the media, a memory and insertion practices and adaptation to a new environment life. Indeed, immigration favors increasingly hatch. “The diversity of cultures” that are an unavoidable issue in integration (Racine, Marengo, 2000). The media, in turn, are an indispensable source of access to information and culture. The development of transmission technologies such cable networks. Direct broadcast satellite, Internet and digital media allow the consumer, regardless of its origin, to appropriate personally cultural products which in turn determine the participation in working life in the host society. This new cultural integration is it spread easily among immigrant generations? The methodology is based on semi-structured interviews, commentary and reflexive content analysis. The interviews with refugee families stetted in several regions of Quebec (Sherbrooke, Joliette, Quebec City and Montreal) were carried out by a multidisciplinary team, multicultural and female. The originality of this research lies among others in the collection of information that is made from generational trios (grandmother, mother and daughter)” Each member of the trio was met individually and thereafter, the trio formed for a final group interview. Thus a thematic analysis of the speech of respondents was conducted. This analysis allowed to put into perspective various prominent elements relating to the relationship between the media and each member of generational trio. It was found that the media are understood differently by each member of the trip, the media such as television and the Internet are the most popular with young people and are used to window on both the host country of openness to the world and expressing oneself face the frustrations experience in Quebec. Finally, an analysis of the issue of intergenerational transmission of the prism of the media between the three-generation of refugee woman was made because this research is part of a larger project of intergenerational transmission of knowledge, practice and mutual aid between three generations of women refugees in Quebec (Vatz Laroussi, Guilbert & al. CRSH, 2009-2012). It is observed that the trios, the transmission is not unidirectional. It goes in all directions. Outside the box become a creative space.

Full textHospital complications potentially related to care in patients admitted for traumatic brain injury (TBI) are not well known. Our retrospective cohort study assessed the incidence and determinants of these complications as well as their influence on mortality and length of hospital stay. Our study population included adults (≥16 years) admitted between 2007 and 2012 for TBI in one of the designated centers of the integrated trauma system of the province of Quebec, Canada. The incidence of neurological and non-neurological complications was respectively 35 and 375 per 1,000 admissions. Treatment-related determinants explained 60.3% and 51.2% of the variance in the risk of neurological and non-neurological complications respectively. Neurological complications increased the odds of mortality by 85% and hospital length of stay by 60%. Non neurological complications increased the odds of mortality by 53% and hospital length of stay by 124%.

Full textImmigration and cultural diversity are, more than ever, a central issue in current sociopolitical debates in Quebec, with identity and integration being the two major emergent themes. While immigrants want to maintain their cultural heritage, Quebecois fear losing theirs in the increasing diversity. This qualitative study centers on an especially discriminated and targeted group: Muslim women. In it, we explore how these women define their identity and how they feel about their integration in society. Using symbolic interactionism and life course perspectives, we seek to understand how these two processes, identity and integration, interact. The data collected during thirteen semi-directed interviews with Muslim-identified women explore the cultural, religious, professional, familial and feminine dimension of their identity. These were then put in relation to the facilitators and the obstacles of the feelingexperience of integration. Whereas the social-political context tends to confine Muslim people’s identity solely to its religious dimension, this study wants to show that immigration is so much more diverse, complex and dynamic than we usually assume. Keywords: qualitative study, integration, immigration, Muslim women, life course perspective, symbolic interactionism

Full textThrough sustained efforts to establish a professional role and to develop its own psychosocial and ecological perspectives, meaningful contributions from social work are likely to improve the quality of life of people with Alzheimer's disease and related conditions and their families. However, the role of the social worker in the interprofessional teams is not sufficiently clarified and this seems to cause confusion among the clientele and other professionals. This qualitative study, which is exploratory and descriptive in nature, aims to better understand social workers' perception of their roles in people with Alzheimer's disease or a related condition and the challenges of these roles in interprofessional collaboration. The analysis of the semi-structured individual interviews with 10 participants demonstrated that the definition and contribution of social workers within interprofessional teams remains to be clarified. It was possible to document the role of social workers and to identify three role issues: ambiguity, conflict and role overload, despite a limited number of participants.

Full textTelemedicine is considered as a tool to support healthcare delivery that can potentially answer some of the problems facing healthcare systems. This study was aimed at analyzing conjointly individual and organizational factors affecting the adoption of telemedicine in the Extended Telehealth Network of Quebec (RQTE). The first article presents an analysis of the psychosocial determinants of physicians’ intention to use telemedicine, based upon the Theory of interpersonal behavior. All of the physicians involved in the RQTE were mailed a questionnaire. Structural equation modelling was applied to test the theoretical model. The theoretical model explained 81% (p < .001) of variance in physicians’ intention to use telemedicine. The main predictors of intention were a composite normative factor, comprising personal as well as social norms (β = 1.08; p < .001) and self identity (β = —.33; p < .001). Thus, physicians who perceived professional and social responsibilities regarding adoption of telehealth in their clinical practice had stronger intention to use this technology. However, the suppression effect of the personal identity construct may indicate that physicians’ self-perception as telemedicine users also influence their intention. The second article deals with organisational characteristics influencing telemedicine adoption. Based upon an integrated framework that combined concepts from different theories, an exploratory study was first conducted among the 32 healthcare centres involved in the RQTE. Then, a multiple case study was conducted among nine hospitals. In-depth interviews were conducted with key-informants in order to enrich the understanding of the context in which telemedicine was implemented. Triangulation of the results has permitted to underline some of the organizational dimensions that have influenced the adoption of telemedicine. Hence, hospital’s localization as well as the availability of equipment and human resources have affected telemedicine adoption. Participation of administrators and physicians in telemedicine decision making has also influenced its adoption.

Full textThe province of Quebec receives the second largest number of immigrants each year within Canada. It seems that emigrating from an under developed country to a developed country increases women's feelings of self-sufficiency and will lead to a positive attitude toward gender equality. The main focus of this study was to evaluate if immigrating to Quebec has had an influence on women’s perceptions of gender equality. In order to achieve this goal, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with eleven immigrant women from eight different countries, now living in Quebec. Questions on their perceptions toward gender, self-sufficiency and gender equality were asked. Constructivist paradigm has oriented the methodology and the data analysis was based on postmodernism feminist theory. Results suggest that gender equality is influenced by the immigration to Quebec and some of the factors of influence were pointed out by the participants. Orientations for further research are shown in the conclusion.

Full textHundreds of people with a severe mental health disorder live in intermediate and family-type resources in the Quebec region. The main purpose of these structures is to integrate vulnerable people into the community. The aim of this research is to determine the impact of intermediate and family-type resources owners’ as well as their employees’ interventions on the community integration of their residents. This study uses Segal and Aviram’s (1978) community integration model as a conceptual framework. Their model proposes to divide the community integration into two concepts: internal and external integration. Internal integration refers to the evolution of residents in the housing environment, whereas external integration concerns the engagement of residents outside the residence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents, owners, and employees of intermediate and family-type resources in the Quebec region. The sample was comprised of 12 actors involved in the field of mental health housing resources including five residents, four owners, and three employees. The data collected were analyzed using a thematic content analysis. The main interventions carried out by owners and employees to ensure the residents’ community integration are grouped into six categories: the establishment of rules, group activities, management of the consumption of goods and services, the formation of a residents’ committee, support for family relationships, and the sustainment of activities independently carried out by residents. It was shown that owners’ and employees’ interventions focus on two objectives: developing residents’ autonomy and ensuring their protection. Owners’ and employees’ authority status is used as one of the main tools to intervene with their customers. Results from this research confirm, but also contradict, previous findings regarding the tension between residents’ need for protection and autonomy, owners’ and employees’ authority status, and the impact of these individuals on the community integration of residents. Keywords: intermediate resource, family-type resource, community integration, mental health, mental illness, resident, autonomy, protection, authority.

However, some factors can negatively contribute to this adaptation and even lead students to drop out before obtaining a diploma (Parkin & Baldwin, 2009). Evolving in a competitive school setting is one of these limiting factors (e.g., Lam, Yim, Law, & Cheung, 2004). Based on the concept of person-environment fit and on concepts of agency and communion, students enrolled in programs focused on counseling have been identified as potentially more vulnerable to the harmful effects of competition. The purpose of this dissertation is therefore to better understand the role of competition and of the fit between personal characteristics and characteristics of the school environment in the adaptation to university of students enrolled in programs focused on counseling. It was expected that students in a competitive setting and those less fitted to their environment would be less able to successfully adapt than students in a non-competitive setting and those more fitted to their environment. The study sample (N = 214) included students enrolled in academic programs focused on counseling (psychology, career guidance and development, social work and psychoeducation) and varying in competitiveness. Contrary to expectations, the results revealed that all the students in the sample adapt well to university, regardless of their program’s level of competitiveness and of person-environment fit. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed and future research directions are proposed.

Full textSocial cognition refers to a set of cognitive functions specialized in the processing of social stimuli, allowing us to interact adequately with others. Adolescence is a developmental stage in which these cognitive functions are particularly solicited, as social relationships increase in importance and complexity. It is also a time when hormonal and brain changes are very likely to modulate cognitive functioning. However, very little is known about the ability to decode and interpret social information at this age, and even less about how brain damage can alter these functions. Thus, the main objective of this thesis was to better understand the functioning of social cognition in adolescence by examining it from various angles. Using neuropsychological measures, the first study was able to demonstrate a lower capacity to recognize emotional facial expressions in adolescents compared to adults, but a similar ability to put oneself in the perspective of a character and infer various mental states. Paradoxically, a self-reported empathy questionnaire revealed a lower tendency to take the perspective of others in adolescents, overall suggesting a possible distinction between the ability to put oneself in the place of others when measured directly and the propensity to do so in real life. The second study then demonstrated that a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury sustained during adolescence further alters this tendency to take the perspective of others in everyday life, as reported in the empathy questionnaire. The third study therefore used an experimental paradigm that is closer to real-life social interactions and examined, through functional neuroimaging, the empathic response of adolescents and adults towards social exclusion. The results showed that in such a context, adolescents are less likely to take the perspective of others, to feel their distress, and to act prosocially. The data of this thesis can thus be integrated into a detailed picture of social cognition in adolescence by specifying the functions that appear developed, those that are not fully developed, and those that are most likely to be compromised by a brain injury. Beyond these findings, the thesis has also highlighted a lower tendency to use these cognitive resources in a context where other peers are present. Ultimately, the results emphasize the importance of intervening on social cognition at this age, both in adolescents with normal development and those whose development can be compromised by brain damage.

Full textIn the field of research about juvenile sexual offending, the clinical and psychopathological perspective remains prevalent. Few empirical studies and explanatory models suggest a developmental perspective of sexual delinquency among young people. To overcome this important limitation, this exploratory study aimed to better describe and explain the continuity and discontinuity trajectories of sexual behavior problems during childhood and adolescence. A random sample (n = 80) consisting of young persons who were referred to Quebec’s Child Welfare system for sexual behavior problems has been used for this research project. Three groups of young people showing distinct developmental trajectories were identified and compared. The results of comparative analysis show some significant differences, especially regarding family and behavioral aspects. Despite these differences, this study shows mainly the presence of significant similarities between the three groups, which explains in part the theoretical and conceptual lack of precision surrounding the explanation of the continuity and discontinuity trajectories of sexual behavior problems in childhood and adolescence. Theoretical, conceptual and methodological leads are proposed in order to improve the actual state of knowledge regarding the development of sexual behavior problems.

Full textThe focus of this doctoral thesis is on Inuit customary adoption in Nunavik. The main objective is to study the association between customary adoption practices and child behavioral problems at school-age. In Nunavik, one-third of Inuit children are adopted according to customary adoption practices. The first article describe the cultural context and the main characteristics of Inuit customary adoption. Taking place at birth, customary adoption is considered as the donation of a child to a close kin, usually the parent’s sibling or the child’s grandparent. Contrary to closed adoptions which is in standard legal use in southern Canada and in the USA, customary adoption is not confidential and biological ties are not severed. The actual information on the development of Inuit adopted children come from a limited body of studies on Inuit children followed by youth protection services. Using data from a prospective longitudinal study conducted in Nunavik, this thesis included a sample of 46 adopted and 231 non-adopted children followed from birth to school age. Prenatal and familial informations were collected and behavioral problems were assessed using the Teacher Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist. The second article compare adopted and non-adopted children on prenatal and familial characteristics and examine the actual extent of the increase in the number of behavior problems seen in Inuit children adopted in accordance with Inuit customs. Adoption per se is not associated with higher rate of behavioral problems at school age but adopted and non-adopted Inuit children were raised in significantly distinct family environments at school-age. Given such differences, the last article identified the prenatal and familial risk factors associated with attention problems and externalizing behaviors in a subsample of Inuit adopted children (n=46). Attention and externalizing behaviors were better explained by familial variables at school age than by prenatal variables. These results contrast significantly with previous domestic and international adoption studies conducted with non-indigenous children. Similarities and differences are discuss in this thesis and hypotheses to explain discrepancies are drawn. This study contribute to extend the scope of knowledge on Inuit customary adoption.
