Abstract:
Abstract Richard McGuire's Here (2014) and Chris Ware's Lost Buildings (Glass et al. 2004) are discussed as examples of graphic novels that demonstrate a synergistic relationship with architecture. The synergistic relationship is examined through its use of decorative forms and the use of architectural reference as a narrative device and a signifier of space and time. The article goes on to explore the potential for architectural structures to function as graphic novels. The late medieval frescos attributed to the architect and painter Giotto, that decorate the chapels at Assisi and Padua, are used as examples of illustrations that rely on their architectural context. Giotto's work is explored as a model to inform the development of the graphic novel into an architectural form. Laura Jacobus' (1999) and Jenetta Rebold Benton's (1989) analyses of Giotto's works at Padua and Assisi provide us with an understanding of Giotto's work and the importance of decorative features in relation to the audience's perception of real and pictorial space, experienced time and narrative time. Jacobus' and Rebold Benton's analysis is then applied to two of London's Art on the Underground projects by Wallinger and Trabizian and also The Factory, Hong Kong. At these contemporary architectural sites, images have been installed to rehabilitate mundane structures and enrich the users experience. The installed imagery allows users to become immersed in narratives by eroding barriers between real and pictorial space, experienced time and narrative time. These contemporary examples describe the graphic novel's potential to be authored and read as an architectural form.

Abstract:
This article discusses how Eileen Chang's works express the soundscape of Hong Kong and the significance of Hong Kong to her creation from the perspective of hearing. Chang's construction of Hong Kong's image took sound and acoustic senses as important media, linking “sound” with “memory”. Significant soundscapes can be divided into three categories, including the ‘city sounds’ of Hong Kong, the sounds of bombing in war, and the incomplete silence. The construction of soundscape implied the author’s psychological trauma and historical memory, and the aural experience ultimately fitted the “bleakness” theme of Eileen Chang’s creation, reflecting her personal view and understanding of the troubled world and life when she started writing in Hong Kong, a threshold space between civilization and barbarism, where cultures mingle.

Abstract:
Magic realism was introduced into China in 1970s. Due to the special historical, geographical and cultural background of Hong Kong, Hong Kong literature developed freely and independently with less ideological constraints. Ye Si and Xixi once represented the Hong Kong cultural elite and directly integrated with western culture. As early as 1950s and 1960s, they began to experiment with magical realism to write, almost following the literary trend in Latin America. The book Flying Felt is a linear series of the rise and fall of the Hua family, with magical realism and fairy tale realism, to write the century-old secular life history of Hong Kong (Feitu Town). This paper takes Xixi's Flying Felt as the main research object, and from the perspective of fairy tale realism, summarizes Xixi's "improved" writing of magical realism and diversified writing of fairy tale realism through narrative techniques and language styles in his works, and analyzes the artistic treatment of historical issues in his works. At the same time, it discusses the expression of Hong Kong local consciousness in Xixi's novels.

Abstract:
This article discusses the experimental animation works of Choi Sai-Ho, Carla Chan, Tobias Gremmler and Chris Cheung Hon-Him to probe animated abstraction as a discursive space through which meaning can be negotiated. These Hong Kong artists explore alternative, open-ended and fluid ways of meaning-making that are emerging in response to more traditional modes of moving image storytelling. In developing a narrative-abstraction vocabulary for artists and scholars to work with, what role can the works of Hong Kong artists play in shaping this, and what perspectives can these works offer for such an endeavour? A range of preoccupations with references ranging from spiritual symbolism and abstracted landscape to Chinese opera and Hong Kong architecture bring to light some of those other visions and possible modes of animated abstraction engaged with producing meaning.

Abstract:
Purpose The goal of this article is to examine the current trends of political cinema in postcolonial Hong Kong. Many leaders of the Hong Kong mainstream cinema have accepted the Chinese authoritarian rule as a precondition for expanding into the ever-expanding Mainland film market, but a handful of conscientious filmmakers choose to make political cinema under the shadow of a wealthy and descendant industry, expressing their desire for democracy and justice and critiquing the unequal power relations between Hong Kong and China. Design/methodology/approach This paper consults relevant documentary materials and cinematic texts to contextualize the latest development of political cinema in Hong Kong. It presents an in-depth analysis of the works of two local independent filmmakers Herman Yau and Vincent Chui. Findings This study reveals a glimpse of hope in the current films of Herman Yau and Vincent Chui, which suggests that a reconfiguration of local identity and communal relationship may turn around the collective despair caused by the oppressive measures of the Chinese authoritarian state and the end of the Umbrella Movement in late 2014. Research limitations/implications Despite the small sample size, this paper highlights the rise of cinematic localism through a closer look at the works of Hong Kong independent filmmakers. Practical implications This study reveals an ambivalent mentality in the Hong Kong film industry where critical filmmakers strive to assert their creativity and agency against the externally imposed Chinese hegemonic power. Originality/value This investigation is an original scholarly study of film and politics in postcolonial Hong Kong.

Abstract:
This paper describes how AI is used to plan, schedule, and optimise nightly engineering works for both the commuter and rapid transit lines in Hoag Kong. The MTR Corporation Limited operates and manages all the rail lines in Hong Kong. Its Engineering Works and Traffic Information Management System (ETMS) is a mission critical systemthat manages all information related to engineering works and their related track possessions and engineering train movements. The Al Engine described in this paper is a component of this ETMS. In Hong Kong, the maintenance, inspection, repair, or installation works along the rail lines are done during the very short non-traffic hours (NTH) of roughly 4 to 5 hours each night. These engineering works can be along the running tracks, track-side, tunnel, freightyards, sub-depots, depot maintenance tracks, etc. The proper scheduling of necessary engineering works is crucial to maintaining a reliable and safe train service during normal hours. The Al Engine optimizes resource allocation to maximize the number of engineering works that can be performed, while ensuring all safety, environment, and operational rules and constraints are met. The work described is part of a project to redesign and replace the existing ETMS, deployed in 2004 with an updated technology platform and modern IT architecture, to provide a more robust and scalable system that potentially can be deployed to other cities around the world.

Abstract:
As a famous modern female writer in the 20th century, Xiao Hong completed 11 collections of works with nearly one million words in just nine years. These creations of hers are divided into two stages: the mainland period and the Hong Kong period, and the Hong Kong period is the mature period and peak period of Xiao Hong's creation, which established her stable position in the literary world. In recent years, with the renaissance of Northeast literature, Xiao Hong's research has gradually increased, but there has not been an overall inspection of Hong Kong's works from the perspective of existentialism. In order to make up for this vacancy, the author chooses the two novellas Tales of Hulan River and Ma Bo'le's Second Life and the two short stories Spring in a Small Town and The Story of Red Glass written during the Hong Kong period as the research objects of this paper. Complying with the inner and outer line principles of literary appreciation put forward by the modern literary critic Liang Zongdai, and based on the theory of Paul Tillich, a representative of American existentialism, the four works are reinterpreted as a whole.

Abstract:
In the new millennium, a discontinuity of postmodern elements began to surface in Hong Kong commercial films. However, young director Heiward Mak Hei-yan integrated postmodern elements into her works, which are primarily urban films, inheriting and developing the postmodern tradition of Hong Kong cinema. She does this primarily by shaping marginal urban landscapes and crowds, capturing the less noticed aspects of Hong Kong city, and demonstrating the anti-grand narrative characteristic of postmodernism. By establishing a postmodern perspective on love, she breaks and "rebels" against traditional romance films, not just merely glorifying the myth of love, but emphasizing the questioning of the eternal view of modern love. Simultaneously, she illustrates the dilemmas of postmodern alienation to portray the contemporary postmodern mentality and cultural symptoms of Hong Kong people in this unique geographical location. Her urban films reflect her positive thinking about urban romance, life, and mental state in a postmodern context, providing the possibility of parallelism between commerciality and postmodernism, and offering insights for the development of Hong Kong cinema.

Abstract:
Reclamation outside Victoria Harbour is one of the multi-pronged approaches of increasing land supply in Hong Kong and tops the agenda of the current-term Government of HKSAR in order to build up a land reserve in the long run to solve the housing problem. The Government has been proactively pressing forward studies for such new reclamation projects as in Lung Kwu Tan and Ma Liu Shui, in addition to those for Kai Yi Chau Artificial Islands and North Lantau. This calls for cost-effective planning, design and construction practices of reclamation works in Hong Kong in order to expedite land production in meeting the vision set in the Hong Kong 2030+. The Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) has taken steps to work hand in hand with practitioners, academia and relevant government departments to consolidate the experience gained from the recent reclamation projects in the territory to enhance the design and construction practices. Focus has been put not only on enhancing the quantity, speed, efficiency and quality of reclamation works, but also promoting the adoption of the latest smart technologies and green construction materials to set a new norm for sustainable development. The first deliverable is the model specification for deep cement mixing (DCM), a prevailing ground improvement technique used in non-dredged reclamation. This paper discusses the rationales and considerations behind the enhancements on the DCM construction specification that could benefit future reclamation projects, and moreover, the planning of and actions taken by the GEO in developing a state-of-the-art while practical local design and construction guide for different reclamation methods and ground improvement techniques.

Abstract:
In recent years, deep cement mixing (DCM) method, a non-dredged ground improvement technique, has been adopted in several local large-scale reclamation works. It is also a robust ground improvement solution and can expedite land formation. Currently, design and construction methods adopted in Hong Kong are mostly referred to the practice or guidelines developed in other countries. With more local experience gained and in view of the potential application in possible coming mega development projects which involve reclamation and ground treatment works, it is considered worthwhile and timely to conduct more detailed studies to understand the engineering properties of the materials improved by this technique and to harness the design and construction practice, with a view to enhancing the cost effectiveness of DCM works. This paper briefly introduces some on-going research related to DCM method covering several design and construction aspects including engineering properties, ground investigation and laboratory testing using laboratory mixed and field mixed cores. The objectives, potential application and preliminary results of the studies are presented and discussed in the paper.

Abstract:
Watermain failure is a complex problem associated with significant socio-economic and environmental impacts. The complexity of this problem originates from many factors of physical, operational, and environmental nature. These aspects have varying contribution towards watermain breaks depending on the regional context. This, therefore, requires specialized studies for each individual region. This study aims at adopting the text mining approach to investigate the aspects contributing to the failure of watermains in Hong Kong (HK) and the socio-economic and environmental consequences of these failures. In this regard, a sum of 94 media articles discussing HK-based watermain failures from 1984 onwards are studied. The findings showed that the aging pipes, hilly terrain, ground settlement, excavation works, and high-water pressure, are the most repeated failure causes in the media. The watermain bursts in HK are found to result in traffic disruptions and incidents, loss of water supply, loss of business activity, flooding inside buildings, cave-in incidents, etc. The inquiry has resulted in a network of interrelationships among consequences of main breaks indicating that these breaks are complex occurrences where chains of events lead to significant socio-economic and environmental impacts. This demonstrates the need of resilient Water Distribution Network (WDN) in HK and also the need of rigorous risk management to deal with the threats related to main failures. The causes behind breaks identified in this study can lead to the modelling of HK-based WDN helping forecast the occurrence of such events. The consequences of breaks identified in this study can help formulate risk management frameworks for HK-WDN.

Abstract:
In recent years, big data is becoming a very powerful tool in processing extremely large amount of data in such fields as finance, industry, engineering, etc. For geotechnical engineering, large number of laboratory and in-situ tests (mostly SPT) have been carried out in the past few decades. Laboratory testing includes soil classification and most importantly three major engineering properties: shear strength, compressibility and conductivity. In order that these data forming the big data can be useful in engineering design, a lot of processing/analysing works have been carried out and these indicate that soil type is the most dominant parameter affecting all engineering properties. Within each soil type, there are some secondary factors such as fines content, dry density, etc, which have only a secondary effect on these properties. Another dominant primary factor is SPT, which will affect most importantly the shear strength.

Abstract:
Large diameter driven tubular piles have recently been used as the foundation system for the Hong Kong Offshore LNG Terminal located in the southern waters of Hong Kong SAR, to the east of the Soko Islands. At present, there are limited guidelines in local codes or guides for the design of offshore foundations in Hong Kong. It is observed that the current practice of regulatory control in Hong Kong will often cause great difficulties in planning and construction of foundation works. Moreover, it is of paramount importance to have experience in offshore pile installation, which is severely lacking in local industry, in order to produce safe and efficient foundation designs to handle the much more hostile site conditions. Some suggestions for revising the current practice are suggested to bring it more in line with accepted international practices for offshore foundations.

Abstract:
Large diameter tubular piles are the most common offshore foundation type in the energy sector due to their relatively easy installation compared to other methods, yet local experiences with regards to their design and offshore installation are still limited. Successful installation of pile foundation on the Hong Kong Offshore LNG Terminal (HKOLNGT) Project provides valuable experience for future offshore developments in the territory. Unlike onshore piling works, offshore piling works are heavily limited by the available machinery, site constraints and weather conditions. This Paper shares the experiences gained on the HKOLNGT Project and draws together solutions to several challenges pertaining to the design and offshore installation of large diameter pile foundations, such as limitations arising from offshore environmental conditions.
