Kwok, Koi Hin Samuel. "The life and choral works of the Hong Kong composer Lin Sheng-shih (林聲翕) (1914-1991)." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6453.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past ten to fifteen years, there has been a trend to perform multicultural choral works in the United States, including Chinese music. Although there are a number of studies about Chinese choral music, there is not much written specifically on Hong Kong choral music. Lin Sheng-shih was one of the most important Hong Kong music leaders in the twentieth century. Lin, an immigrant from mainland China, was a patriotic musician who dedicated his life to promoting Chinese music through his professional career in Hong Kong. This study confirms that he contributed tremendously to his new home. Chapter One contains a brief historical and sociological background of Hong Kong choral music under British sovereignty and the biographical overview of Lin’s life into four periods from his early life in China to his immigration to Hong Kong. Chapter Two presents findings of Lin’s philosophical beliefs as an educator, composer and conductor through his own writings. Last, Chapter Three contains a discussion and analysis of his compositional styles chronologically with supporting examples from fifteen of his most representative choral works. The analysis leads to a greater understanding of the development of his evolving compositional style, from his continual search for new techniques in Western Classical-Romantic style to his use of Chinese elements with effective and illustrative piano accompaniments. This study illustrates that through his distinctive compositional periods, he combined Chinese idiomatic sonorities with Western compositional techniques in order to create his own voice.

Cheung, Esther. "Developing a best practice framework for implementing public private partnerships (PPP) in Hong Kong." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2009. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/28597/1/Esther_Cheung_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Public Private Partnership (PPP) is a well established methodology for procuring public works projects. By incorporating the private sector’s expertise, efficiency, innovation, business sense, risk sharing, financing etc. into public works projects, the quality of public services and facilities can be uplifted. Like many jurisdictions, Hong Kong is also keen to take aboard this methodology which is so familiar but yet so distant. Although they have been one of the first jurisdictions to utilise the private sector in public works projects, their comfortable financial reserves has meant that there has been no urge to push the movement until recently. PPP has become increasingly popular amongst governments. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government is no exception. Some of the more active works departments have commissioned studies to investigate the best ways to deliver these projects, others have even trialed the method themselves. The efficiency Unit of the HKSAR government has also become an active arm in conducting research in this area. Although so, the information that is currently available is still very broad. Building from their works there is a need to develop a best practice framework for implementing PPP projects in Hong Kong by incorporating international experiences. To develop a best practice framework will require thorough investigation into the benefits, difficulties and critical success factor of PPP. PPP should also be compared with other procurement methods. In order to do so it is important to clearly understand the local situation by an analysis of projects conducted to date. Lessons learnt can further be derived from other countries and incorporated to those derived locally. Finally the best conditions in terms of project nature, complexity, types, and scales for adopting PPP should be derived. The aim and objectives of this study were achieved via a comprehensive literature review, in-depth case analyses, interview survey with experts from both Hong Kong and overseas, and finally a large scale data collection was conducted via a questionnaire survey with PPP practitioners. These findings were further triangulated before they were used as the basis to form the best practice framework presented in this thesis. The framework was then further validated by PPP experts to ensure it is comprehensive, objective, reliable and practical. This study has presented a methodology that can be adopted for future studies. It has also updated our knowledge on the development trends of PPP as well as opened up the experiences of other jurisdictions. The findings have shown that the local industry is familiar with “what” should be done in PPP projects but they are unsure of “how” these goals can be achieved. This framework has allowed this further knowledge to be delivered to PPP practitioners. As a result, the development of this framework can help to resolve the current economic crisis by encouraging more developments and business opportunities for the private sector. In addition, the correct projects can be delivered by PPP, the advantages of PPP can be maximised, and the general public can benefit from the private sector’s participation.

“Hong Kong had never been known for its literary achievement until Xi Xi’s beautifully written words shone amid this desert of literature,” said David Der-wei Wang, a renowned literary critic and professor of Chinese literature. From the 1960s onward, Xi Xi(1937-)has dedicated herself to writing a variety of literary works consisting of a multitude of themes with a highly idiosyncratic style. Many readers are fascinated with her literary works, whereas a large number of scholars across the Taiwan Strait as well as in Hong Kong have paid close attention to her works over the decades. A diverse array of research results has been produced, yet discussions over the dissemination of literary works are few and far between. The aim of this paper was to explore how Xi Xi’s works have been disseminated in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The methodology was based upon the definitions and approaches of literature proffered by Chi-yang Lin, Wen-Wei Shiu, and Shi-ping Cai. This paper examines the way Xi Xi’s works have been disseminated across Hong Kong and Taiwan, using document analysis and inductive method in enriching the discourse of this paper. This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One, a.k.a. introduction, is devoted to the motivation, purpose, scope and approaches of this research, while giving an overview of research findings till today. Chapter Two provides an account of Xi Xi’s life and her writings in prose and verse, which invites further discussion. Chapter Three describes the process of dissemination of Xi XI’s literary works in Hong Kong by focusing on the historic context, main channels of dissemination, and communication response and the effects of communication, respectively. Chapter Four describes the process of dissemination of Xi XI’s literary works in Taiwan by addressing the historic context, main channels of dissemination, and reception of communication and its effect, respectively. Chapter Five provides concluding comments regarding the key elements of dissemination of Xi Xi’s works in Hong Kong and Taiwan, presents an analysis of the dissemination process of Xi Xi’s works, and proffers an outlook on dissemination of Chinese literature in the near future. Appendices, including chronicles of her life events and of publications, a compilation of publications, monographs, and theses that dealt with Xi Xi’s writing strategies, and another compilation of articles that were previously found in magazines and newspapers published in Hong Kong and Taiwan analyzing Xi Xi’s literary works—all this can be found at the end of this paper. The present paper summarizes the five characteristics of the dissemination of Xi Xi’s literary works in Hong Kong and Taiwan. They are: the newspaper has served as the main channel of dissemination, how gatekeeper networks have promoted communication, reception effects in writings of prose and verse, the emergence of diverse and innovative communication response, and an outlook on dissemination of Chinese literature in the seeable future. The different types of dissemination of Xi Xi’s works are expected to exert an influence on the dissemination of Chinese literary works of other modern writers.

In this paper, I choose Hong Kong as an object and based on the writer of Hong Kong, Liang Bing-Jun, and the writer of Taiwan, Jewel Tsai’s food writing. I analyze and discuss of several works for writers by taking cultural studies as the path and referring to the history and reality of the development of Hong Kong. When we face the wave of globalization, the writers how to describe the city? The city, Hong Kong, how to be found the character and the difference between others? According to these writings, we can find that they emphasize pluralistic national identity, cultural things in this intersection process in their composition. Liang Bing-Jun writes about under the Eastern and Western cross-cultural intersection, colliding with each other, and the emergence of mixed-breed new forms of cultural type. Jewel Tsai writes about the background of ingredient, the same ingredients Department of the Chinese culture, through the effects of different powers, and then change to another culture.
