Rossignol, Bertrand. "Les fondations de l'école Nichiren du Lotus à l'époque de Kamakura (1253-1333) : les deux premières générations de disciples de Nichiren et leur interprétation de l'oeuvre de leur maître." Paris, EPHE, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013EPHE5023.
Full textThis thesis has a theme specific to the History of Religions: the relationship between a spiritual master and his disciples. The problem dealt with in this case is how the Japanese monk Nichiren (1222-1282) acquired his religious legitimacy. It wants to show how he transmitted the prophetic mission he felt invested with, as well as evaluate the meaning and scope of this mission within the community he founded, for his disciples of first and second generation. Nichiren considers himself as the heir of a legacy. He wants to act as the envoy of Shakyamuni Buddha at the time of the Final Age of the Law (Mappo), whose mission is to restore the original purity of Buddhism. And as such, he founded a new Buddhist school. This quest for legitimacy is linked with biographical elements presented in Part 1, chapter 1, and with the evolution of its doctrinal position in connection with Tendai Buddhism (Part 3, chapter 2). Nichiren guarantees the purity of a transmission. His teaching, both simple (the Daimoku) and complex (the Mandala), was able to reach a large segment of the Japanese society of his time, in several provinces of Japan (Part 1, chapters 2 and 3)
