Abstract:
AbstractThe paper attempts to make sense of two radically changed characters in two early sequels to Honglou meng. One is the managerial Daiyu of Hou Honglou meng, the other is the military Baochai of Honglou fumeng. The analysis begins with a comparison to oral literature, especially the genre known as zidishu. It concludes that the likeliest influences lie elsewhere, perhaps in such vernacular novels as Shuihu zhuan and the rhymed prosimetric text Zaisheng yuan. Readerly dissatisfaction with the parent novel certainly also played a role. There are some grounds on which to argue that women readers had input into Baochai's transformation, although the case cannot be made for sure.

Abstract:
Surface water samples of two sections were respectively collected from one side to the other side of Honghu Lake, China, in order to detect the concentrations and distribution of HCHs in the region. The concentrations of total HCHs (the sum of α-HCH, β-HCH,γ-HCH and δ-HCH) in surface water of Honghu Lake ranged from 0.94 to 7.04 ng/L. The highest concentration of HCHs in water was near a shipping traffic path. HCHs were derived mainly from agricultural runoff around Honghu Lake and release of the sediments. Among four component compounds of HCHs, γ-HCH was major contributor in the water, which suggested that lindane may have been used recently around Honghu Lake.

Abstract:
Abstract Honghu Lake is the largest lake-type wetland in Hubei Province, China. It is also one of the largest shallow lakes in the Yangtze River Economic Zone, a key area in the relatively more developed southeast of China. However, the water quality has seen a deterioration tendency in recent decades, mostly owing to unreasonable human activities such as lake enclosure aquaculture following rapid social and economic development. Based on the water quality index (WQI) method, the water quality of Honghu Lake, by the vast amount of data collected from five observation sites monitored over ten years, was analyzed and evaluated. The results show that: (i) the water quality of Honghu Lake is in the ‘General’ grade as a whole with a WQI value of 43.41 ± 6.66; (ii) the water quality has been improving in the recent two years, reversing its decade-long deterioration; (iii) the water quality sampled at the Lantian site is the worst while that of the Guandun site is the best; (iv) the concentration of Pb and Cd are the key parameters to determine the water quality of Honghu Lake. Therefore, it can be concluded that more attention should be paid to investigate heavy metals in Honghu Lake in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human body, but its content decreases with age. So it is suitable to supplement the body's GABA from diet. Hongqu wine is popular because of the addition of Monascus strains in the saccharification process, which makes the wine rich in functional ingredients such as GABA, and monacolin K. In this study, the fermentation parameters of Hongqu wine were optimised to maximise the GABA content through response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal conditions were as follows: 500 g of steamed rice was mixed with 115.4% of boiled water containing 10 g of sodium glutamate and adjusted to pH 3.8 with lactic acid, and then 32% of Hongqu seed inoculum was added. After 5 days of fermentation at 28 °C, 1.5 g of activated yeast was inoculated for ethanol fermentation at 30 °C for 5 days. Finally, the average content of GABA in Hongqu wine amounted to 710.24 mg L–1, which is close to the value predicted by RSM model (692.44 mg L–1), indicating the statistical fit is good. This provided technical support and theoretical guidance for the production of Hongqu wine rich in GABA by two-stage fermentation.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigates the similarities between Li Ruzhen's nineteenth-century novel Jinghua yuan and Cao Xueqin's eighteenth-century masterpiece Honglou meng in terms of their artistic experimentation, by its focus on Li's appropriation of Cao's rhetorical strategies. It places the two novels in the context of vernacular literature in the mid- and late Qing period and attributes the disappearance of the "pseudo-oral" narrator in both novels to the dramatization of the narration and the establishment of a supernatural realm as the sphere of the author. The rhetorical strategies employed in Honglou meng, and subsequently evoked in Jinghua yuan, are not, as this study intends to show, the sporadic engagements of the supernatural seen in earlier novels. Instead, they are sophisticated mechanisms at work in both the model and its imitation. In comparing the similarities of rhetoric in these two novels, this essay emphasizes Li Ruzhen's artistic creativity by highlighting his critical responses to Honglou meng and his ingenuity in re-using Cao Xueqin's techniques.

Abstract:
After the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773, the French missionary Joseph-Marie Amiot, last of the great Jesuit scholars of China, befriended the Manchu prince Hongwu 弘旿, court artist and cousin of the Qianlong emperor. Hongwu became the most enthusiastic local patron of the ex-Jesuits still living in Beijing, helping them with research and providing them with information. Together, Amiot and Hongwu discussed new developments in natural philosophy, from electrical medicine to gas balloons. They conducted experiments in the Jesuit’s quarters at the North Church and in the prince’s nearby mansion, drawing from European and Chinese traditions alike to explain them. In the end, they concluded that their investigations were socially and politically dangerous, so they decided to keep them secret. It has generally seemed that the missionaries who remained in Beijing toward the end of the eighteenth century had few local encounters and failed to communicate contemporary natural philosophy; the story of the friendship between Hongwu and Amiot is a notable exception, revealing that cross-cultural exchange remained possible.

Abstract:
Abstract This article argues Hou Honglou meng (Later Dream of the Red Chamber; in circulation by 1796), the earliest sequel to the 120-chapter Dream of the Red Chamber, was likely written by a woman. The author of Hou Honglou meng makes the reborn Lin Daiyu the central protagonist of the novel. Over the duration of thirty chapters, Daiyu transitions from the role of daughter, to bride and daughter-in-law, and finally to mother. This pragmatic Daiyu has no patience for the romantic cult of qing values of the parent novel; instead, her sentimental attachments are directed toward her natal family, and her expressed will is to escape marriage in order to pursue Daoist transcendence. Daiyu returns to life as an extremely practical household manager who revives the fortunes of the Jia family. This image of an empowered Daiyu who insists on her autonomy from Baoyu, who is still obsessed with his qing-based yearning, conforms to the types of protagonists found in female-authored tanci. The article concludes with the argument that the prolific woman of letters Yun Zhu (1771-1833) deserves serious consideration as the author of Hou Honglou meng.

Abstract:
We studied the competition between Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Rhizobium fredii isolates for nodulation of soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) cultivars Williams and Ai Jiao Zao grown in three different soils in pots. Two of the soils were from People's Republic of China, one from a soybean field in Honghu with no history of Rhizobium inoculation, and one from a rice field in Wuhan with no history of soybean cultivation. The Honghu soil contained B. japonicum and R. fredii (log total number g−1 = 5.82 ± 0.58); whereas the Wuhan soil only contained B. japonicum (log total number g−1 = 2.80 ± 0.52). Inoculation did not result in a significant increase in nodule number on plants in either soil. Uninoculated plants of both cultivars harbored only R. fredii in the Honghu soil and only B. japonicum in the Wuhan soil. Even when B. japonicum were inoculated into the Honghu soil, R. fredii occupied the majority of the nodules on both cultivars. In the Wuhan soil, B. japonicum serogroups USDA110 and USDA136b (= CB1809) occupied the majority of the nodules except when an isolate of R. fredii from the soybean soil was added in high numbers. In a Hawaiian soil devoid of B. japanicum or R. fredii, when soybeans were inoculated with isolates of both species, most of the nodules were formed by B. japonicum. The R. fredii isolate could form up to 20% of nodules in this soil, but only on the Ai Jia Zao cultivar. In the Wuhan but not the Hawaiian soil, peat pelleting of seeds with equal numbers of two B. japonicum and one R. fredii isolates increased nodule occupancy by B. japonicum USDA136b serogroup significantly as compared with when the same isolates were inoculated into the soil. The results reported here highlight the critical importance of being indigenous to the competitive success of B. japonicum and R. fredii in nodulation of their soybean host.
