Abstract:
AbstractRichard Waller's ‘Life of Dr Robert Hooke’, prefixed to his edition of Hooke's Posthumous Works (1705), is an important source for the life of one of the most eminent members of the early Royal Society. It also has the distinction of being one of the earliest biographies of a man of science to be published in English. I argue that it is in fact the first biography to embrace the subject's natural-philosophical work as the centre of his life, and I investigate Waller's reasons for adopting this strategy and his struggle with the problem of how to represent an early experimental philosopher in print. I suggest that Waller eschews the ‘Christian philosopher’ tradition of contemporary biography – partly because of the unusually diverse and fragmentary nature of Hooke's intellectual output – and draws instead upon the structure of the Royal Society's archive as a means of organizing and understanding Hooke's life. The most quoted phrase from Waller's biography is that Hooke became ‘to a crime close and reserved’ in later life; this essay argues that Waller's biographical sketch was fashioned in order to undo the effects of that reserve. In modelling his approach very closely on the structure of the society's records he was principally concerned with making Hooke's work and biography accessible, intelligible and useful to the fellowship in a context familiar to them, a context which had provided the institutional framework for most of Hooke's adult life. I argue that Waller's ‘Life’ was also intended to make the largest claims for Hooke's intellectual standing that the author dared in the context of the enmity between Hooke and Isaac Newton once the latter became president of the Royal Society. However, I also adduce fresh manuscript evidence that Waller actually compiled, but did not publish, a defence of Hooke's claim to have discovered the inverse square law of gravity, allowing us to glimpse a much more assertive biography of Hooke than the published version.

Abstract:
Modification of Hooke's law for multiaxial stress in viscoelastic solids On the basis of Hooke's law for multiaxial stress in elastic solids, similar relationships for viscoelastic materials are considered. It is assumed that the material is homogeneous and isotropic, and that the Kelvin-Voigt's model is applicable to normal strain components. An analogous model is also taken for shear strain components. It is shown that the ratio of coefficients of viscous damping of normal and shear strain components is equal to the ratio of Young modulus and shear modulus. As a result, the modified Hooke's law for multiaxial stress in viscoelastic materials has been formulated which includes three material constants: Young modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of viscous damping of normal strain.

Abstract:
Students generally approach topics in physiology as a series of unrelated phenomena that share few underlying principles. However, if students recognized that the same underlying principles can be used to explain many physiological phenomena, they may gain a more unified understanding of physiological systems. To address this concern, we developed a simple, inexpensive, and easy to build model to demonstrate the underlying principles regarding Starling's Law of the Heart as well as lung and arterial elastic recoil. A model was chosen because models significantly enhance student understanding. Working with models also encourages research-oriented learning and helps our students understand complex ideas. Students are drawn into discussion by the power of learning that is associated with manipulating and thinking about objects. Recognizing that the same underlying principles can be used to explain many physiological phenomena may help students gain a more complete understanding of physiological systems.

Full text
Abstract:
Single self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are able to emit single-photons and entangled-photons pairs. They are therefore considered as potential candidate building blocks for quantum information processing (QIP) and communication. To exploit them fully, the ability to precisely control their optical properties is needed due to several reasons. For example, the stochastic nature of their growth ends up with only little probability of finding any two or more QDs emitting indistinguishable photons. These are required for two-photon quantum interference (partial Bell-state measurement), which lies at the heart of linear optics QIP. Also, most of the as-grown QDs do not fulfil the symmetries required for generation of entangled-photon pairs. Additionally, tuning is required to establish completely new systems, for example, 87Rb atomic-vapors based hybrid semiconductoratomic (HSA) interface or QDs with significant heavy-hole (HH)-light-hole (LH) mixings. The former paves a way towards quantum memories and the latter makes the optical control of hole spins much easier required for spin- based QIP. This work focuses on the optical properties of a new type of QDs optimized for HSA experiments and their broadband tuning using strain. It was created by integrating the membranes, containing QDs, onto relaxor-ferroelectric actuators and was quantified with a spatial resolution of ~1 µm by combining measurements of the µ-photoluminescence of the regions surrounding the QDs and dedicated modeling. The emission of a neutral exciton confined in a QD usually consists of two fine-structure-split lines which are linearly polarized along orthogonal directions. In our QDs we tune the emission energies as large as ~23meV and the fine-structure-splitting by more than 90 µeV. For the first time, we demonstrate that strain is able to tune the angle between the polarization direction of these two lines up to 40° due to increased strain-induced HH-LH mixings up to ~55%. Compared to other quantum emitters, QDs can be easily integrated into optoelectronic devices, which enable, for example, the generation of non-classical light under electrical injection. A novel method to create sub-micrometer sized current-channels to efficiently feed charge carriers into single QDs is presented in this thesis. It is based on focused-laserbeam assisted thermal diffusion of manganese interstitial ions from the top GaMnAs layer into the underlying layer of resonant tunneling diode structures. The combination of the two methods investigated in this thesis may lead to new QDbased devices, where direct laser writing is employed to preselect QDs by creating localized current-channels and strain is used to fine tune their optical properties to match the demanding requirements imposed by QIP concepts.

Coupled spring equations for modelling the motion of two springs with weights attached, hung in series from the ceiling are described. For the linear model using Hooke’s Law, the motion of each weight is described by a fourthorder linear differential equation. A nonlinear model is also described and damping and external forcing are considered. The model has many features that permit the meaningful introduction of many concepts including: accuracy of numerical algorithms, dependence on parameters and initial conditions, phase and synchronization, periodicity, beats, linear and nonlinear resonance, limit cycles, harmonic and subharmonic solutions. These solutions produce a wide variety of interesting motions and the model is suitable for study as a computer laboratory project in a beginning course on differential equations or as an individual or a small-groupundergraduate research project.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on the relationship between Hooker's doctrine of law and his concept of "participation," which is an important feature of his sacramental doctrine. In The Lawes of Ecclesiasticall Politie (V.50--67), Richard Hooker discusses the saving work of Christ and man's participation in him through faith and the sacraments. How does Hooker understand participation in God? Hooker speaks of the Atonement, Justification and sacraments in the vocabulary of the magisterial Reform, but (perhaps uniquely) understands the same doctrines within the framework of law, the instrument by which God orders his creation. Hooker defines law in terms of Aristotelian causes to describe a process of participation: the causes that inform the natures, operations and ends of creatures accomplish a hierarchical process of emanation of being from God and return to God. Law therefore mediates between God and creation. Creatures participate in God through the natural law, but after the fall, man's participation is restored through the divine law. Hooker's account of the Incarnation and Atonement, justification through faith, and sacramental participation---the main features of the divine law---therefore takes into account the idea of law. Hooker's treatment of participation, then, is based on categories in classical physics, and his doctrine of law influences his treatment of specific theological loci.

The present dissertation is the result of the educational, “Teaching model of electrical resistors to describe fractures in physical systems”, product worked in a class of the third year of high school of the State School Prof. Marcolino de Barros of the municipality of Patos de Minas-MG. In which, we present a simple pedagogical model with the purpose of studying the complex process of ruptures in physical systems. For this, we developed an experimental model together with its theoretical counterpart where we consider a system of electric resistors network subject to a potential difference and analyze the current that passes through the system as a function of the random removal of their resistive components. We use a circuit board, voltage source stabilized at a pre-established potential difference, and a resistor network with a few ohms units each. After the proposed experiments are executed, we obtained appropriate experimental data and from these graphs are generated with which the dependence of the current through the circuit with the interruption of the joints is shown. Taking into account that this system behaves as an ohmic system, the model is used to study several relevant physical concepts. As is the case of an elastic solid subject to Hooke’s law- like deformations, this is then a very broad model.

Abstract:
The monograph presents the results of the development and research of new mathematical models of the processes of vibrations of solids, liquids and gases, taking into account local disequilibrium. To derive differential equations, the Navier—Stokes equations, Newton's second law and modified formulas of the classical empirical laws of Fourier, Hooke, Newton are used, which take into account the velocities and accelerations of the driving forces (gradients of the corresponding quantities) and their consequences (heat flow, normal and tangential stresses). The conditions for the occurrence of shock waves of stresses and displacements in dynamic thermoelasticity problems formulated taking into account relaxation phenomena in thermal and thermoelastic problems are investigated, new results are obtained in the study of longitudinal and transverse vibrations of rods, strings, liquids and gases, and the conditions for the excitation of gas self-oscillations arising from a time-constant heat source are determined. It is intended for scientific and technical workers specializing in mathematics, thermophysics, thermoelasticity, as well as teachers and students of technical universities.

Abstract:
Abstract Mechanical and tribological properties of layer composites like hardness, bonding strength, friction and wear coefficients as well as operation performance, component reliability and finally the system lifetime are mainly influenced by residual stresses after the thermal spraying and machining process. The residual stress situation in thermally spray coated composites is superimposed by different stress mechanisms occurring during the manufacturing process based on heat and mass transfer during the coating deposition. Using the microhole milling and drilling method, residual stress fields can be measured in a quasi non destructive way over the drilling depth with appropriate resolution. In several drilling and micromilling operations a circular, cylindrically shaped microhole is brought step by step into the component surface. The residual stresses are locally relieved due to material removal, deform the surface around the drilled microhole and are measured by high resolution measurement tools, e.g. strain gauges (DMS), for every drilling step in form of relaxed surface strains. Using calibration curves and material data (E, μ) the measured surface strains are converted into nominal strains at the bottom of the drilled hole for every drilling step. Out of the differentiated strains, in-plane stress fields can be incrementally determined by Hooke's law. This study describes residual stress measurement features, the FEM-calculation and idealization of calibration curves as well as results of exemplary stress measurements.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of experimental studies of the lateral pressure coefficient under compression and deformation characteristics E and ν (modulus of total deformation and Poisson's ratio). According to the existing methods for calculating the settlement of foundations, it is recommended to take Poisson's ratio constant depending on the type of soil. The inaccuracy of this approach is illustrated by the studies carried out by the authors to determine the lateral pressure coefficient, which depends on the physical properties (density, moisture, particle size distribution, etc.) and the initial stress state of the soil. The influence of the method for determining the lateral pressure coefficient and, accordingly, Poisson's ratio in calculating the deformation properties of soils and the limits of application of the generalized Hooke's law is shown. In real conditions, the distribution of stresses from an external load and compression along the central axis is close to the compression conditions, but the general process of deformation of the base is caused by both lateral and vertical deformations, which are characterized by the coefficient of transverse expansion ν.

NUMERICAL AND THEORETICAL STUDIES ON DOUBLE STEEL PLATE COMPOSITE WALLS UNDER COMPRESSION AT LOW TEMPERATURES. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, December 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2021.17.4.6.

Abstract:
Double steel plate composite walls (DSCWs) with several unique types of connectors have been implemented to protect offshore oil exploration platforms from concentric forces caused by ice in the Arctic region. This paper investigates the compressive perfor-mance of DSCWs with interlocked J-hooks and overlapped headed studs at low temperatures ranging from 20 ℃ to -80 ℃ with nonlinear finite element models (FEMs). The intricate geometric size of the concrete, multiple interactions of the concrete with the connectors, and material nonlinearities of the concrete have been thoroughly simulated. The reasonable consistency between the results of the monotonic tests and finite element analysis (FEA) on nine DSCWs with interlocked J-hooks and seven DSCWs with overlapped headed studs indicates that the FEMs can effectively predict the compressive performance of the DSCWs at low temper-atures. On the basis of the validated FEMs, the effects of the horizontal and vertical spacing of the connectors on the compressive performance of the DSCWs are studied. Finally, theoretical models of the load-displacement curves are developed to reveal the compressive response of DSCWs at low temperatures with different types of connectors, taking into account the restraining effect of steel plates on the inner concrete and the local buckling of steel plates. Compared with previous tests and FEA, the developed theoretical models have reasonable consistency for the load-displacement curves of DSCWs at low temperatures.
