MOXHAM, NOAH. "An experimental ‘Life’ for an experimental life: Richard Waller's biography of Robert Hooke (1705)." British Journal for the History of Science 49, no. 1 (February 15, 2016): 27–51. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0007087416000029.

Abstract:
AbstractRichard Waller's ‘Life of Dr Robert Hooke’, prefixed to his edition of Hooke's Posthumous Works (1705), is an important source for the life of one of the most eminent members of the early Royal Society. It also has the distinction of being one of the earliest biographies of a man of science to be published in English. I argue that it is in fact the first biography to embrace the subject's natural-philosophical work as the centre of his life, and I investigate Waller's reasons for adopting this strategy and his struggle with the problem of how to represent an early experimental philosopher in print. I suggest that Waller eschews the ‘Christian philosopher’ tradition of contemporary biography – partly because of the unusually diverse and fragmentary nature of Hooke's intellectual output – and draws instead upon the structure of the Royal Society's archive as a means of organizing and understanding Hooke's life. The most quoted phrase from Waller's biography is that Hooke became ‘to a crime close and reserved’ in later life; this essay argues that Waller's biographical sketch was fashioned in order to undo the effects of that reserve. In modelling his approach very closely on the structure of the society's records he was principally concerned with making Hooke's work and biography accessible, intelligible and useful to the fellowship in a context familiar to them, a context which had provided the institutional framework for most of Hooke's adult life. I argue that Waller's ‘Life’ was also intended to make the largest claims for Hooke's intellectual standing that the author dared in the context of the enmity between Hooke and Isaac Newton once the latter became president of the Royal Society. However, I also adduce fresh manuscript evidence that Waller actually compiled, but did not publish, a defence of Hooke's claim to have discovered the inverse square law of gravity, allowing us to glimpse a much more assertive biography of Hooke than the published version.

Abstract:
Modification of Hooke's law for multiaxial stress in viscoelastic solids On the basis of Hooke's law for multiaxial stress in elastic solids, similar relationships for viscoelastic materials are considered. It is assumed that the material is homogeneous and isotropic, and that the Kelvin-Voigt's model is applicable to normal strain components. An analogous model is also taken for shear strain components. It is shown that the ratio of coefficients of viscous damping of normal and shear strain components is equal to the ratio of Young modulus and shear modulus. As a result, the modified Hooke's law for multiaxial stress in viscoelastic materials has been formulated which includes three material constants: Young modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of viscous damping of normal strain.

Abstract:
Students generally approach topics in physiology as a series of unrelated phenomena that share few underlying principles. However, if students recognized that the same underlying principles can be used to explain many physiological phenomena, they may gain a more unified understanding of physiological systems. To address this concern, we developed a simple, inexpensive, and easy to build model to demonstrate the underlying principles regarding Starling's Law of the Heart as well as lung and arterial elastic recoil. A model was chosen because models significantly enhance student understanding. Working with models also encourages research-oriented learning and helps our students understand complex ideas. Students are drawn into discussion by the power of learning that is associated with manipulating and thinking about objects. Recognizing that the same underlying principles can be used to explain many physiological phenomena may help students gain a more complete understanding of physiological systems.

Abstract:
In the spirit of Germain the most general objective stored elastic energy for a second gradient material is deduced using a literature result of Fortuné & Vallée. Linear isotropic constitutive relations for stress and hyperstress in terms of strain and strain-gradient are then obtained proving that these materials are characterized by seven elastic moduli and generalizing previous studies by Toupin, Mindlin and Sokolowski. Using a suitable decomposition of the strain-gradient, it is found a necessary and sufficient condition, to be verified by the elastic moduli, assuring positive definiteness of the stored elastic energy. The problem of warping in linear torsion of a prismatic second gradient cylinder is formulated, thus obtaining a possible measurement procedure for one of the second gradient elastic moduli.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the constantant value of a spring. This research was an experimental research consisting of several stages of preparation, determining independent and dependent variables, conducting experiments, analyzing and concluding. This research used a simple material that was solid beam with a length of 3.5 cm, width of 3.5 cm, height 4.5 cm and mass of 300 g, two types liquid of water and cooking oil, one spring to be calculated the value of spring constantant. The results showed that the volume of dyed objects was inversely proportional to the increase of the length of the spring and the density of the liquid type affected the magnitude of increase in the length of the spring. The constantant value of the spring in water was 21.43 N/m and the spring constantant value of cooking oil was 21,27 N/m. These results can be used as a proof of the truth of equations that combine the concepts of Hooke's law and Archimedes' Law. It can then be used as an alternative to investigating the value of spring constantant k in addition to Hooke's law experiments and simple harmonic motion.

Abstract:
The exponential form of constitutive model is widely used in biomechanical studies of blood vessels. There are two main issues, however, with this model: 1) the curve fits of experimental data are not always satisfactory, and 2) the material parameters may be oversensitive. A new type of strain measure in a generalized Hooke's law for blood vessels was recently proposed by our group to address these issues. The new model has one nonlinear parameter and six linear parameters. In this study, the stress-strain equation is validated by fitting the model to experimental data of porcine coronary arteries. Material constants of left anterior descending artery and right coronary artery for the Hooke's law were computed with a separable nonlinear least-squares method with an excellent goodness of fit. A parameter sensitivity analysis shows that the stability of material constants is improved compared with the exponential model and a biphasic model. A boundary value problem was solved to demonstrate that the model prediction can match the measured arterial deformation under experimental loading conditions. The validated constitutive relation will serve as a basis for the solution of various boundary value problems of cardiovascular biomechanics.

Abstract:
Learning media is an essential aspect in explaining or visualizing fundamentals of physics that are difficult to understand. Learning media with simulations is increasingly beneficial when Indonesia is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, which requires distance learning or online education to be implemented. The community service of the Physics Department of Andalas University aimed to introduce PhET simulations as a virtual laboratory to improve understanding of Physics fundamentals for students at SMAN 3 Painan, Pesisir Selatan District, West Sumatra in 2021. Preparation of community service was begun with preparing a practicum module from a simulation of the topic of Physics. The assessment of increasing students' understanding of simulation is carried out in Hooke's law module. The number of participating students was grouped into control students (10 people) and students with Hooke's law PhET simulation training (10 people) by giving pre-test and post-test treatments. The t-test analysis shows that the control group and the PhET simulation produced the same output (p = 0.05) at pre-test. It means that the abilities of both groups were the same during the pre-test. In contrast to the post-test case, the PhET simulation group produced higher output than the control group. It means that students' ability in Hooke's law simulation PhET training experienced a significant increase in understanding (p < 0.05). This community service activity can help improve students' understanding to learn the physics fundamentals in SMAN 3 Painan.

Abstract:
This paper is aimed at studying the behavior of the band of inferior glenohumeral ligament subjected to uniaxial traction. Twenty ligaments were distributed in two groups: Group I ( ligaments with bony origin and insertion) and Group II ( medial portion of the ligament). Uniaxial traction was applied to all tendons utilizing a traction machine develop in the Department of Physics of UFC. Hooke's Law was used for evaluation of ligament behavior during elastic phase and the Exponential stress-strain Law, for rigidity phase. All ligaments had the same behavior, presenting a phase of elasticity , followed by one of rigidity. After evaluation of the elastic phase , applying Hooke's Law, ligaments constants were 10.507 N/mm ( group I ) and 13.80 N/mm ( group II), suffering a straining of 2.83% and 2.84%,respectively, until the ligament became rigid. During rigidity phase, the constants were 511.56% N/mm (group I) and 156.84% N/mm (group II). It is concluded that the ligament submitted to traction suffers a small elongation until becoming rigid along with an important increase in force constants during rigidity phase.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the transient dynamics of serpentine belt drives. A model for the rotational motion that has been proposed in the literature is extended to elastic belt creep. However, unlike previous articles, this paper adopts a logarithmic strain measure to describe elastic creep. A condition for the existence of steady state motions with constant belt tensions, as a solution of the mass conservation law, is derived. This condition is violated for the linear strain measure together with Hooke's law, whereas it holds for the logarithmic strain measure. As a consequence, only the logarithmic strain measure, together with Hooke's law, leads to system equations that cover steady operating states. In the case of linear strain, belt tensions and tensioner position do not converge towards constant values when choosing a set of external torques that balance each other out. This is illustrated by two numerical examples. Furthermore, the considerations are reinforced and anchored in the automotive field by analysing the transient belt drive behaviour during a ‘revving-up’ manoeuvre of a common rail diesel engine. The considerations are generally applicable, not only to the classical elastic creep theory but also to any other, more sophisticated theory.

The thermal diffuse scattering in triglycine sulfate, (NH2CH2COOH)3·H2SO4, has been modelled by treating the intermolecular interactions that give rise to the correlated atomic displacements like Hooke's law springs. To limit the number of variables in the model, the force constants for the interactions were parameterized in a number of ways, the most successful of which was an empirical interaction potential using an exponential function of the interatomic separations.

Abstract: The paper examines the relationship between the macroscopic parameters, such as the Young's modulus in the Hooke's law, the sound speed and the Debye characteristic temperature, with the binding energy of an individual atom. A formula for calculating the elastic deformation modulus is proposed. A simple formula is obtained to calculate the sound speed in a metal rod. It is suggested that the Debay characteristic temperature is connected with the binding energy of the ion in the solid lattice.

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of guided inquiry-based physics worksheets in training students' science process skills. This case study was conducted at SMAN 4 Sidenreng Rappang with 28 respondents. Students use worksheets based on guided inquiry for four meetings in Hooke's law material. The worksheets were developed using the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation, including expert validation. We obtained the expert analysis of student worksheets based on guided inquiry from two experts, namely 3.16 out of 4 Likert scales with a validity percentage of 78.89%. These results indicate that the student worksheets based on guided inquiry are appropriate. Also, the gain test is used to determine the effectiveness of this worksheet. The science process skills test score obtained an average N-gain of 0.69, and this value is included in the medium category. This is shown based on student responses which found that 28 respondents generally gave a positive reaction to guided inquiry-based physics worksheets. This means that students receive guided inquiry-based physics worksheets as an effective learning resource used in learning.

Abstract:
Because of cracks and poor consolidation, rocks may have large third‐and fourth‐order nonlinear elastic moduli. Even though strains are small, nonlinear effects may be important in acoustic wave transmission experiments. A nonlinear and dispersive extension of Hooke's law is proposed. Combined with Newton's law, this gives a nonlinear and dispersive acoustic wave equation. For some combinations of nonlinear and dispersive parameters, the wave equation can be reduced to the Korteweg‐deVries equation, such that analytical solutions can be obtained. Finite‐difference simulations with an initial Ricker wavelet show that the nonlinear terms in the wave equation steepen the wavefront and higher harmonics in the frequency spectrum. When dispersion is included, a nonlinear stress–strain relation with hysteresis is observed.
