Abstract The emergence of the 2019 pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease (COVID 19)has triggered movements of people from urban areas to rural areas. This movement is also opening a window of opportunity for strengthening rural areas and fostering the development of rural areas worldwide. It is a potential opportunity for rural development because it can motivate concerted efforts towards achieving sustainable development in rural areas. The incursion of this virus disaster (i.e. the COVID 19 pandemic) is unmasking the vulnerabilities of the urban areas and the resilience of the rural areas. The challenge posed by the pandemic is revealing that the urban areas cannot keep the development promises rural migrants to have always believed they would achieve. Longterm sustainability oriented thinking and practices are needed, and rural focused development innovations must be sought. The material and immaterial values of rural areas must now be recognized and considered in the development of nations. These are necessary to tap into the opportunities presented by the reverse migration being experienced in certain countries of the world. This chapter posits forward looking statements on these rural issues.

Zhang, Hongwei. "Technological Support For Endangered/Minority Languages." In Semitic Languages and Cultures. Open Book Publishers, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.11647/obp.0411.07.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid development of the computer and internet technology has made digital space an indispensable part of modern life. While the technological advancement has enabled more creative ways for documenting endangered and minority languages, such as the collaboration by trained native speakers (Villa 2002), the insufficient technological support still leaves members from such language communities with very limited digital space online. This is true for minority languages with traditional writing systems, such as the Plains Cree syllabary (Antonio Santos and Harrigan 2020), and the situation can only be worse for those without an established writing system, such as the Modern South Arabian Languages. In the context of the importance of technological support to minority languages, this paper describes the author’s personal experience with creating cross-platform keyboard layouts for Modern South Arabian Languages. As a precious branch of the Semitic language family that survived to the present day, these minority languages lack official recognition and there has not been any conventional writing system for them until very recently (Watson et al. n.d.; Naumkin and Kogan 2015). In fact, long before the current the Unicode Standard, i.e., Version 13.0 of (The Unicode Consortium 2020), since no later than Version 4.0.1 (Aliprand et al. 2003, 473), all the special characters involved in the proposed Arabic-based orthography for the Modern South Arabian Languages have been incorporated. However, the corresponding input methods did not become available until a Mehri layout was released in Google’s Gboard app for Android devices only. To fill in the gap, the author created system keyboards for both Windows and MacOS platforms and a working iPhone keyboard should be available after the next update of the iOS app Keyman. Since “[a]ll people, even the illiterate or semiliterate, are empowered to become part of the information society more readily if they are able to use their own languages” (Pretorius and Bosch 2003, 57), it is hope that the products of this project can help promote the online presence to contribute to the revitalization of the Modern South Arabian Languages.

Windows into Teaching and Learning (WiTL), a project conceived and actualized by authors situated in a large urban university in the southeastern region of the United States, captures the nuisance of online learning as a method for transforming school-based clinical experiences in teacher preparation programs. This chapter introduces and describes the theoretical context in which the project was developed in hopes to convey the potential for uncomplicated and intuitive innovations in teacher education to recalibrate current practices to the demands of the 21st Century classroom. An overview of the challenges facing colleges of education in providing meaningful and relevant clinical experiences to pre-service teachers enrolled in online distance education courses is discussed and serves as the impetus of WiTL. In the chapter, the authors explain the methods and technology used by the researchers to demonstrate the project’s practical duplicability in almost any course with clinical requirements. Abstract The care of patients with acute ischemic stroke has rapidly changed in domains of diagnostic expediency and options for management. Coordinated multidisciplinary specialty care, improving technology, and favorable outcomes in clinical trials have increased the number of patients eligible for intervention by both systemic thrombolytic therapy and directed mechanical clot retrieval. The extended time window for reperfusion of cerebrovascular flow has subsequently increased salvage of the ischemic penumbra, decreasing overall infarct size and improving patient functional outcomes. The advances in mechanical thrombectomy, specifically in regards to the extended time windows for treatment eligibility, now offer hope to patients who were previously destined to severe morbidity and mortality. The authors of this chapter review indications for acute stroke therapy, methods for streamlining immediate care, key diagnostic imaging findings, results of the major thrombectomy trials, and complications for the post-interventional patient.

Abstract:
During 1992, we used a compact, radio-frequency (rf) excited, CO2 coherent lidar to measure winds in the marine boundary layer. This system employed a Q-switched master oscillator, frequency offset local oscillator, and power amplifier unit to provide 1-3 mJ of energies at pulse rates of 200 Hz. The lidar is currently being modified to provide measurements at two wavelengths, which will enable simultaneous Doppler wind observations and differential absorption lidar (DIAL) species concentration measurements in the lower 3-5 km of the atmosphere. It is hoped that the instrument will be able to p

Abstract To investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the chrome-plated tube and hope it could be used on the internal heat exchanger of passive containment cooling system (PCS), an experimental investigation has been conducted. In this experiment, a series of steam condensation experiments are performed under pure steam and steam-air mixed conditions over chrome-plated tube for a variety of chromium coating thickness (1μm and 10μm), total pressure, air mass fraction and wall subcooling. Condensation heat transfer coefficient was obtained for the total pressure ranging from 0.2 MPa to 0

Abstract:
Abstract Drilling process automation has been a trending topic within the technical community, most recently discussed in SPE-212565-MS (Cayeux et al. 2023). Recovery control - specifically in the case of motor stalls - is not only integral to consistently completing automation control system execution, but also building confidence for the control system users and ultimate automation benefactors. Predicting, preventing, detecting, mitigating, and recovering motor stalls through automated recovery control solves an issue affecting most operators, contributing to additional bottom-hole assembly

Aim/Purpose Institutions with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) must evaluate their praxes for equity, recognizing that campuses must be inclusive communities that celebrate diversity. Further, teaching and learning experiences should provide mirrors, windows, and doors, have cultural validity, afford multiple mechanisms for student success, be centered around the assets of students, build knowledge, extend perspectives, and foster empathy. One of the main challenges faced in developing countries is that many children and youths are not in any form of education, employment or training. Unlike the developed world, these countries have young populations and are characterized by relatively high population growth rates. It is practically not feasible to accommodate the increasing number of children and youth in existing educational institutions, using the traditional methods of classroom education. There is the risk of keeping more children and youth out of education and by so doing, exposing them to all forms of social problems like

Abstract:
Shifts in disturbance patterns across the Northeast are of increasing concern as the climate continues to change. In particular, changes in patterns of frequency, severity and extent of disturbance event may have detrimental cascading impacts on forest ecosystems and human communities. To explore how changing disturbance regimes might impact future forest health and management it is necessary to understand the historical trends and impacts of disturbance in the region. Although individual types of disturbance have already been analyzed, there is a need for a consolidated overview of the curren
