Full textBackground: Patients in palliative care are in need of hope to be able to live during the time left for them. The nursing care of patients in palliative care is connected to the patient’s experience of hope. In a Swedish context it has not been published any study since 1998, concerning how nurses do to mediate hope to patients in palliative care.Aim: The aim of this study was to elucidate how nurses in Sweden mediate hope to patients in palliative care.Method: A qualitative empirical inductive study was conducted. Eight nurses working in a palliative care-unit or a palliative home care-unit (ASIH) were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed with inspiration of Graneheim & Lundman´s qualitative content analysis (2004).Results: The study shows that nurses redirect the hope, permit the incredible hope, build relationships, help with practicalities, handle symptoms medically, touch physically and involve others to mediate hope to patients in palliative care. The result is presented in categories and subcategories, where the categories constitute above-mentioned concepts. Conclusion: The study especially shows that nurses redirect the hope and permit the incredible hope to mediate hope to patients in palliative care. The study also shows a tension between these two categories.

Full textBackground: The definition of palliative care is to give treatment to patients with incurable disease when the patient is not expected to survive the disease. Hope is important to strive for in palliative care, where the nurse has a significant role. It is difficult to convey hope to critically ill patients, and therefore the knowledge of how it can be conveyed is important. Aim: To describe how nurses can convey hope to patients in palliative care. Method: A content analysis was made where nine scientific articles were audited. Results: The nine scientific articles that were audited resulted in one category; communication in palliative care with three subcategories; communication about focus in life, nurse’s presence when communicating and communication about death. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that communication with patients about death was a difficulty for nurses. Where fear of patient losing their hope was a big part of why nurses choose to avoid talking about death. When nurses have had the courage to talk about death with the patient it has shown positive effects within the patient where they have reached an acceptance of the incurable disease and they have been able to keep their hope. The study has shown how important it is that nurses dare to communicate with patients about death.

Full textBackground The whole family is affected when their child is diagnosed with cancer. If one individuals' life situation changes, this will affect the lives of everyone included. It is essential that the nursing and the family is seen as united. Hope has shown have a great meaning in cancer care and for the recovery. However, lack av hope can eventuate consequences like depression, decreased motivation and compliance. The background shows that the nurse is the profession that is best suited for promoting and preservation of hope. Aim The aim was to describe family's experiences of hope in care of a child with cancer. Method A non-systematic literature review with 17 scientific articles. Twelve scientific articles were search in PubMed and CINAHL and five articles through a manual research. The total amount of articles was quality reviewed and went later on through an integrated analysis. Results Most families experienced hope as something constant and the most important component in nursing for a child suffering from cancer. However parents could also experience that the intensity of hope varied depending on how the treatment progress went. Intensity of the variation was described as high hopefulness resulted in reduced anxiety symptoms while a low hopefulness caused depression and anxiety. An empathic and understanding response, support from relatives and health care professionals together with truthful information and knowledge about the disease were those factors that promoted hope according to the family. Conclusions All families experienced the significant meaning of hope. Partly to be able to continue the treatments through the roller-coaster parents described that the cancer brings with it, but also to be able to resist the consequences cancer and hopelessness can bring, such as depression and anxiety. Summarized, hope is described as something fluctuating but were always present.

Full textWhen humans find themselves in difficult situations, hope can be an important resource. Despite this, hope has the ability to fail you in those crucial moments when it is most needed. The feeling of hopelessness can be a heavy burden and can create immense suffering for the patient. Therefore, it is crucial that the feeling of hopelessness is understood and revealed when prominent so that hope can be encouraged. For patients suffering cancer, support from the community is an important factor to boost hope. By providing personalized and health-promoting care the nurse can contribute towards giving hope nourishment. The purpose of this study is to elucidate hope in caring in patients with breast- or prostate cancer. The method consists of a systematic literature review with an inductive approach. The result shows three different areas that hope is influenced by: the individual, their relationships, and the importance that the caregiver puts on hope. It illustrates how hope can be expressed in these three different categories. The support of friends and family was crucial for the ability to feel hope, developing a sense of meaning, and having a trusting relationship with the nurse. The attitude towards the disease and the self-esteem are also of great importance for the ability to feel hope. Further research is needed to investigate the meaning of hope for elder men.

Full textThe aim of the present study was to investigate the importance of hope, empowerment and stigma in a recovery process of mental illness. A qualitative method was used and individual interviews with participants from Dalarna University experience panel was conducted. To analyze the empirical data a qualitative content analysis was applied which resulted in the following themes; To be accepted, hope conditions and normalizing. The results showed that hope rather was a product of the recovery than it was a contributing factor. To be accepted promoted empowerment and protected from stigma. Normalizing factors like compassion and to emphasize the healthy sides promoted the empowerment and broke impotence. Thesis results can be considered as experience-based knowledge, which is a prerequisite for evidence-based social service where the user perspective is emphasized.

Full textPeople affected by ill health (caused by sickness, or injury) can believe that the feeling of hope is a strength that contributes to their coping of the situation. Hope can be defined as a multidimensional concept and is often a necessary part of the adjustment or transition process to a new situation. Transition involves the process of change or development in an individual who is suffering from ill health, where hope is an essential part of the process. Hope can be experienced in different ways. Therefore it is of value that health care professionals can provide person-centered care, or also known as individual designed care. The purpose of this literature overview was to present individual’s experiences of hope in various states of ill health. A qualitative approach was chosen with 10 studies examined. After data collection, analysis of these studies, according to Friberg’s five-step analysis, was undertaken. The main findings of the literature overview show that hope for some, is a life force, and is an active condition/state. It has also been shown to be passive and realistic. In addition, having hope can also provide individuals with the opportunity to regain lost abilities. It also appears that the sources of hope can be from; personal physical development, environmental support and spiritual beliefs. The implications for clinical practice highlight how nurses can use realistic hope, to assist in the care of their clients. It also demonstrates how nurses can adapt information to a person with ill health. The clients’ experiences of hope need not be linked to any specific type of illness. Finally, hope is experienced in a similar way by many individuals.

Full textEach year about 300 children gets sick in some sort of cancer in Sweden. That a child becomes ill in cancer do not only affects the sick child even the parents. Cancer diagnosis creates a crisis to the whole family. In connection with this crisis situation arising also the concept of hope. Parents hope in the experience of having a child with cancer. To enable parents to be able to have a chance to cope with the challenging situation it is important to illuminate the factors that can affect the parents hope in a positive or in a negatively way. What can the medical personnel do to eliminate the factors that are a threat to the hope and how hope can be maintained. Which corresponds to the literature study’s purpose. Five categories have been identified to reflect the result to describe the factors that promotes and threats the hope; Knowledge gives hope, Social support gives hope, family-centered care gives hope, Threats to the hope and Belief in the future gives hope. If the parents are well-informed, receive social support from family, friends and other parents in a similar situation and have belief in the future makes the parents to have good opportunities to maintain hope. However, there are factors that can threaten the feelings and experiences of hope.

Full textHope and Self-Esteem are two concepts in positive psychology. Snyder and colleagues (1991) grounded the theory that defines Hope and suggest a relation to Self-Esteem. Hope is defined as the general perception that one's goals can be met, while Self-Esteem as a feeling of self-worth. Hope's two components are: Pathway and Agency. Pathways are the route generating thoughts to desired goals, and Agency is the motivational component of Hope. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the concepts of Hope -and Self-Esteem, and the possible effects of age and gender, in a Swedish context, that, according to our knowledge, were not previously studied. The study population included 136 Swedish college students (Mean age = 24, SD = 5.6 years), in a close to 50:50 gender distribution. Data was collected with the help of the validated, self-rated questionnaires: Snyder´s "Hope Scale" and "Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale" (modified). The non-parametric statistical methods of Spearman and Mann-Whitney were used for data analysis. Results showed that women scored significantly higher than men, and adults (over 22 years) scored higher than young adults (under 22) in Hope. Self-esteem was not affected by gender but young adults scored significantly lower than adults. Moreover, while a moderate and significant correlation between Hope and Self-Esteem could be measured, the multiple regression analysis showed that only the Agency component contributed significantly to Self-Esteem. Women showing higher Hope than men and adults showing higher Hope than young adults are two findings that are not in line with previous studies.

Full textBackground: The most common form of cancer in Sweden is prostate- and breast cancer. A large proportion of the patients diagnosed with cancer are in a need of palliative care at the hospice or at home care. These patients often end up in grief, and hope is central to that vulnerable situation. The nurse should enable patients to receive a dignified death, promote quality of life and support close relatives. Aim: The aim was to investigate the feeling of hope among patients with cancer in palliative care and palliative home care. Method: The literature review method was formed after Friberg. Ten scientific articles were selected from the databases Cinahl Complete, PubMed and PsychINFO. The articles were both qualitative and quantitative. Results: The result was divided into three main themes and seven sub-themes; Aspects of hope with the subthemes Hope and Hopelessness and Quality of life; The creation of hope with the subthemes Need of hope, Autonomy; Contradictory emotions at the end of life with the subthemes Acceptance and Facing death. The result showed that the feeling of hope in patients with cancer in palliative care often commutes between hope and hopelessness. Discussion: The findings discuss the two keyresults hope and hopelessness that appeared in the results. Katie Eriksson’s theory of hope, the caring relationship and suffering is discussed. Further, it describes patients significance of hope and how this differs among different patient groups. Even patients' mental health is discussed when anxiety and depression can occur among these patients.

Full textBackground: Lung cancer is the type of cancer with the highest mortality. When receiving a lung cancer diagnosis, feelings like fear, despair and hope can arise, which is important for nurses to know and understand. The role of the nurses is to promote the physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being of the people they care for by providing person-centered care. Aim: To describe the experience of hope among people with lung cancer. Method: A literature review with qualitative design and a deductive approach. Thirteen qualitative articles were included in the result. Polit and Beck’s model was used in the analysis process. Result: The analysis resulted in two themes which described the experience of hope among people with lung cancer. The first theme was the significance of healthcare with the associated subthemes to have faith in medical treatment and to receive a good encounter. The second theme was intrinsic resources with the following subthemes: to have a religious belief, to have a meaningful remaining time and to think positively. Conclusions: The experience of hope is meaningful among people with lung cancer. Hope is a positive feeling and a wish for the individual’s future. Nurses have a significant role in empowering the hope of people with lung cancer through their communication and ability to remain person-centered.

Full textWe live in a society where images are increasingly growing in importance. Important new communication channels are websites on the Internet and social media. A website is often used by companies and organizations to communicate the values of the company or organization. It then becomes important to not only convey facts but also produce the desired sense of emotion. It is not always easy to know how to express oneself in a visual form to convey the feeling you want to emphasize since it is difficult to know how the image affects and guides us as viewers. In my investigation I will take up this issue in order to discuss how to convey emotions over the web using pictures and layout. Specifically, I have chosen in my study to examine how to convey a sense of hope through a cancer organization's website. Previous research on the definition of an image and the interaction between viewer and image is the basis for my investigation. Based on my basic question about conveying hope I have made a discourse analysis of two existing websites. A questionnaire and a group interview have also been carried out in order to see how these websites are perceived by different target groups with regard to the ability to convey the feeling of hope. A comprehensive discussion of the results is reported. The conclusions of the investigation have then been used to design a new prototype website for a similar organization, the Children's Cancer Association. The preliminary version of this website is presented and the specific parts of this website are discussed based on previous literature and the results of the investigation.

Full textAs a nurse it´s unavoidable during one´s professional career not to get in touch with death and dying. Knowledge about patient´s ability to feel hopeful and how this can be supported by the nurse seems important to be able to offer a high quality care at the end of life. The purpose of this literature review was to answer the questions: How can hope be given/be experienced by patient´s at the end of life? The purpose was also to investigate if the patient´s experiences of hope are congruent with the questions in the instrument Herth Hope Index (HHI-S) and the patient´s experiences of hope. Method: This literature review is based on 10 articles with a qualitative design. Results: Five categories where found from the patient´s perspective which all can increase the experience of hope. These where: social support, goals, spirituality, view of life and communication. The following four categories where found from the nursing perspective: communication, goals, view of life and time. The questions in the Swedish version of the Herth Hope Index (HHI-S)were compaired to the categories found in this literature review. Conclusion: It seems important as a nurse to know which sources that can contribute to hope. That kind of knowledge can contribute to a high quality care and a hopeful patient. The HHI-S seemed to capture most of the found categories except for communication.

Full textThe aim of this study was to highlight how hope is experienced by patients in a palliative care context. The background notes that about 90 000 palliative patients die in Sweden each year. The patients in palliative care experience several dimensions of pain, both physical and psychological. Hope is described as something that can lead patients towards more positive goals and actions and is therefore of great importance for their wellbeing. The method of this study is a general literature study based on qualitative research. The analysis is performed with an inductive approach. Following similarities identified 17 subcategories, six categories and two overall themes that where established. The result illustrates how hope is expressed in palliative care patients. Unchanged hope, transformational hope, strategic hope, overcoming hope and everyday hope were categories that emerged as hopeful. In contrast to the hope there were also a hopelessness. The hopelessness was identified as an obstacle to hope which increased passivity and the feeling of helplessness. The conclusion of this study is that the experience of hope is expressed in different ways through the care process. There are several categories that are recurring in earlier research. Most discoveries are identified as hopeful and proved to increase the quality of life for patients in the palliative care context. However, there is no research about how patients would like to be treated regarding their hope.

Full textPurpose: The purpose of this study is to gain greater understanding of how the public sector in smaller communities perceive and handle difficulties in recruiting executives and what they base their chosen approach on. Methodoly: Using an inductive approach, a survey study was performed on the public sector of Kalmar Län. A qualitative method was used to collect data, by conducting eight semi-structured interviews with executives in public sector organizations. Conclusion: The study has shown that public sector in smaller communities perceives a problem finding relevant candidates for executive positions, but they do not see it as a crisis. To handle the difficulties in finding relevant applicants they use operative and strategic actions. Operative actions include for example extending the ad and using the informal recruitment method. The strategic actions involves for example the talent management programs and by working with employer branding. The public sector in smaller communities is taking actions to handle the problem they perceive and also to handle the underlying factors that led to the problem. The way they handle the problem is based on formal and informal forces. Different forces prevent flexibility and the public sector in smaller communities imitates each other to maintain their legitimacy.

Full textKnowledge about women’s experiencesof sexuality after hysterectomy isdeficient among healthcareprofessionals. Since sexuality is acomplex phenomenon further researchis required to illustrate women’sexperiences and consequently alter thebehaviour of the healthcareprofessionals and the approach ofnursing. The aim of the study was toexplore women’s experiences ofsexuality after hysterectomy. The studywas conducted as a systematic literaturereview in which the results were basedon eleven research articles. The resultsshowed that sexuality is a subjectivephenomenon that by women isexperienced to be a part of the femaleidentity. Women who have undergonehysterectomy were likely to experience amaintained or improved sexual function postoperatively. A few womenexperienced a severely impaired sexualfunction postoperatively, which seemedto depend on several factors other thansurgery. Many women considered thereproductive ability to have a strongcorrelation with sexuality. In themeeting with women who haveundergone hysterectomy, the nurseshould have a holistic approach. Moreknowledge about the phenomenonsexuality should be involved in theeducation of nurses to improve theability of communication about intimacy.Further research of qualitative characterabout the female sexuality is needed inorder to alter the nursing to women’sneeds.

Full textExperiences of hope among people receiving palliative care - A literature review Summary Background: The diagnosis of an incurable disease may sooner or later lead to the need for palliative care. In this situation, hope is usually one of an important part in continuing to live and experience well-being as well as a good quality of life. Purpose: The aim of this literature review was to describe the experience of hope among people receiving palliative care. Method: A literature review was performed where 11 articles with a qualitative design were included and with the help of Herth Hope Index analyzed deductively. The article search was made in the CINAHL and PsycINFO databases. Result: Despite a bad forecast and the awareness that death is approaching, the participants in the studies continued to hope and set future goals. Hope was affected both positively and negatively, depending on the past, the present and the future. What promoted hope most proved to be family and related. Some participants thought there was nothing to hope for when the future looked dark. Faith on God / and or Jesus as well as higher powers helped participants to maintain and increase hope. Conclusion: The result that emerges can provide guidance for health professionals about how palliative patients experience hope and how it can be promoted, expanded and what makes hope maintained. Keywords: expectation, experience, incurable diseases, terminal care
