Abstract:
This essay focuses on a body of photoconceptual works from the 1960s and 1970s in which the automobile functions as a prosthetic-like aperture through which to view the world in motion. I argue that the logic of the “automotive prosthetic“ in works by Paul McCarthy, Dennis Hopper, Ed Ruscha, Jeff Wall, John Baldessari, Richard Prince, Martha Rosler, Robert Smithson, Ed Kienholz, Julian Opie, and Cory Arcangel reveals a techno-genetic understanding of conceptual art, functioning in addition and alternatively to semiotics and various philosophies of language usually associated with conceptual art. These artworks show how the automobile, movement on roads and highways, and the automotive landscape of urban sprawl have transformed the human sensorium. I surmise that the car has become a prosthetic of the human body and is a technological force in the maieusis of the posthuman subject. I offer a reading of specific works of photoconceptual art based on experience, perception, and a posthumanist subjectivity in contrast to solely understanding them according to semiotics and linguistics.

Abstract:
Analiza ilościowa filmów i seriali w programie telewizyjnym pogłębia refleksję na temat praktyk decydentów telewizyjnych, którzy uwzględniając konieczność działania propagandowego, musieli jednocześnie dbać o atrakcyjność oferty.

Abstract:
The purpose of this survey is to assess the counterculture’s contribution to the American cinema through the films directed by Dennis Hopper, chosen for his sympathy for the Movement. His filmography is explored in the light of Theodore Roszak’s 1969 essay. Famous as an actor, Hopper has demonstrated an interest in visual arts, expressed in a continuous creativity in the fields of painting and photography, which shapes his film work. It is legitimate to draw parallels between his artistic choices and various art movements of the 20th century. While Hopper’s aesthetic options originate in the national heritage, his thematic concerns pertain to the counterculture’s claims. The oppositional nature of the Movement is rendered by the dual structure of patterns, both in form and in theme, and by the representation of deviant behaviour. These serve a strategy for the reenchantment of a world threatened by the growing grip of technocracy. Borne by the Movement’s set of values, Hopper is also driven by his own vision. The survey of his characters reveals a difficulty in breaking away from older models, imposed by classic Hollywood, which inspired him, and by his background. Thus the modes of protest that have become most relevant today are precisely not those that he has most thoroughly explored. The comparison with other careers attempts to prove the existence of a collective venture, to describe its evolution over the 69-94 period, and to trace its potential heritage

Abstract:
World War II, with the publication in 1957 of On the Road by Jack Kerouac, followed 12 years later with the screening of Denis Hopper’s Easy Rider, the road novel and road movie constitute, we argue, two sides of what we call the road narrative. Faced with a lack of comprehensive studies embracing both sides concurrently, and with recurrent amalgams, we reflect on the components differentiating the road novel and road movie from other types of wandering stories. Such a project calls for the construction of an intermedial apparatus, enabling us to jointly encompass artworks belonging to different media formats. Consequently, we build on the concept of the chronotope, as developed by Bakhtin as a tool for literarycriticism, and recently extended by scholars to cinematographic objects. We show how road novels and roadmovies emerge from the combination of two fundamental chronotopes: that of the road, exemplified by a postmodern universe dominated by motor vehicles and non-places, and that of the threshold, understood as the expression of a critical turn in one’s life. The noted presence of a parodic dimension in road narrativescalls for the introduction of an additional bakhtinian concept: the carnivalesque, which, as we show, can be articulated in relation to the previously defined road and threshold chronotopes. For this chronotopical analysis, we selected artworks from the American, Quebecois and German repertoires, a choice justified by the numerous potential connections to be established between those three different cultures

Abstract:
This chapter set the stage for an exploration of contemporary French-language European road movies by tracing the interwoven lines of the tradition in its American and European iterations back to the 1960s, the period during which the template for contemporary road cinema crystalized. It argues that the contours of the road movie tradition are not strictly the product of a direct lineage from seminal American films from the late 1960s, such as Easy Rider (Dennis Hopper, 1969, USA), but the result of complex transnational interactions within European cinemas and between European and American cultures. The films covered are Il Sorpasso (Dino Risi, 1962, Italy), Le corniaud/The Sucker (Gérard Oury, 1965, France/Italy) Les petits matins/Hitch-Hike (Jacqueline Audry, 1962, France), Im Lauf der Zeit/Kings of the Road (Wim Wenders, 1977, West Germany), Leningrad Cowboys Go America (Aki Kaurismäki,1989, Finland/Sweden) and Lisbon Story (Wim Wenders, 1994, Germany/Portugal).

Abstract:
Dennis Sölch discusses Whitehead’s perception that science was undergoing a paradigm shift (especially given the confusion in the field of physics at the time), and hoped to bridge the physical and biological sciences and create a more unified concept of nature. With Lawrence Henderson, Whitehead would emphasize the reciprocal relationship between organism and environment, counter to both the vitalist and reductive materialist theories. He believed that biology would become the dominant science of the coming era, providing the best hope for radical innovations in human understanding.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the final lecture of the Air Force Course, “Primary Strategic Objectives of Air Forces” by Muir Fairchild. In this lecture Fairchild concludes that the fundamental decision in air warfare is whether to attack an enemy’s national economic structure or its military forces. Attacking the economic structure is a purely offensive action, while attacking enemy forces has both offensive and defensive objectives. In modern war, technologically sophisticated weapons play an increasingly important role, and destroying the means of producing such weapons prevents the arming of the enemy’s military. The targeting of the enemy nation’s economic structure thus denies the opponent the hope of victory and increases the costs of continued resistance.

Abstract:
In the United States, the education system is more than just a mechanism for transmitting knowledge. It is the nation’s most powerful tool for creating economic opportunities and helping individuals secure a good quality of life and parents’ primary plan for securing the well-being of their children. As such, educational attainment is often touted as the proverbial “key to the kingdom” that puts those who hold it on the path to prosperity. This link between economic mobility and education sets the United States apart from much of the rest of the developed world, where most countries have strong welfare systems that allow individuals to succeed routinely without postsecondary education. This international contrast provides an important framework for understanding how the role of education aligns with how Americans see themselves and their futures. More specifically, Americans vest their hopes in education as a means of getting ahead instead of relying on a generous welfare state that ensures that “nobody is in need”—the predominant view, for example, among Europeans. Crucially, the institution of education is supposed to work equally for all Americans, regardless of their starting point. This belief in education as a force for equity as well as opportunity was ensconced in its foundations, as articulated by Horace Mann in 1848, “Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is a great equalizer of the conditions of men—the balance wheel of the social machinery.” It persists, extolled by Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education in the Obama Administration, “In America, education is still the great equalizer” and National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel, “Education is the great equalizer . . . opening doors of opportunity for all.” However, there are signs that Americans increasingly doubt the viability of these egalitarian ideals and question whether education can truly realize the promise of a better future. In 2014, only 64% of Americans reported that they still believe in the American dream.

Abstract:
After 350 years of continual social transformations under the push of industrialization, capitalism, world-wide social revolutions, and the development of modern science, what reasonably remains of the traditional faith in divine transcendence and providential design except a deep-felt, almost 'ontological' yearning for transcendence? Torn between outmoded religious traditions and an ascendant secular world, the contemporary celebration of individuality only makes more poignant the need for precisely that religious consolation that public life increasingly denies. People must now confront the meaning of their lives without the assured aid of transcendent purpose and direction. The resulting sense of absence profoundly marks the contemporary world. Confronted with the theoretical problems posed by the absence of absolute values, and the historical problems posed by contemporary social movements, Camus dramatized the urgency of developing guides to humane conduct in a world without transcendence. He continued to believe that only when the dignity of the worker and the respect for intelligence are accorded their rightful place can human existence hope to realize its highest ideals, and our life find the collective meaning and purpose that alone can truly sustain us in the face of an infinite and indifferent universe.

Abstract:
The Democratic Party’s 2008 presidential nomination was supposed to be the inevitable coronation of Hillary Clinton. She was the most well-known candidate; had the most support from the party establishment, and had, by far, the most financial resources. Two big names (Al Gore and John Kerry) considered running, but decided they had no hope of defeating the Clinton machine. That left an unlikely assortment of lesser-knowns: a U.S. Representative from Ohio (Dennis Kucinich), the Governor of New Mexico (Bill Richardson), and several U.S. Senators: Joe Biden (Delaware), John Edwards (North Carolina), Chris Dodd (Connecticut), Mike Gravel (Alaska), and Barack Obama (Illinois). The nomination went off script. Obama was a first-term senator, a black man with an unhelpful name, but he excited voters. He raised enough money to be competitive in the Iowa caucuses and he persuaded Oprah Winfrey to campaign for him. Obama defeated Clinton by eight percentage points in Iowa and the race was on. Obama won the Democratic nomination and, then, the presidential election against Republican John McCain because the Obama campaign had a lot more going for it than Obama’s eloquence and charisma: Big Data. The Obama campaign tried to put every potential voter into its data base, along with hundreds of tidbits of personal information: age, gender, marital status, race, religion, address, occupation, income, car registrations, home value, donation history, magazine subscriptions, leisure activities, Facebook friends, and anything else they could find that seemed relevant. Some data were collected from public data bases, some from e-mail exchanges or campaign workers knocking on front doors. Some data were purchased from private data vendors. Layered on top were weekly telephone surveys of thousands of potential voters which not only gathered personal data, but also attempted to gauge each person’s likelihood of voting—and voting for Obama. These voter likelihoods were correlated statistically with personal characteristics and extrapolated to other potential voters based on their personal characteristics. The campaign’s computer software predicted how likely each person its data base was to vote and the probability that the vote would be for Obama. This data-driven model allowed the campaign to microtarget individuals through e-mails, snail mail, personal visits, and television ads asking for donations and votes.

Abstract:
The fashion industry is subject to recurring cycles of popularity that are regular enough to be dubbed the “20-year rule.” Activewear clothing that is suitable for the gym and the street was fashionable in the 1990s and, 20 years later, in the 2010s. Intellectually, the British economist Dennis Robertson once wrote, “Now, as I have often pointed out to my students, some of whom have been brought up in sporting circles, high-brow opinion is like a hunted hare; if you stand in the same place, or nearly the same place, it can be relied upon to come round to you in a circle.” In the same way, today’s data miners have rediscovered several statistical tools that were once fashionable. These tools have been given new life because they are mathematically complex, indeed beautifully complex, and many data miners are easily seduced by mathematical beauty. Too few think about whether the underlying assumptions make sense and if the conclusions are reasonable. Consider data mining with multiple regression models. Rummaging through a large data base looking for the combination of explanatory variables that gives the best fit can be daunting. With 100 variables to choose from, there are more than 17 trillion possible combinations of 10 explanatory variables. With 1,000 possible explanatory variables, there are nearly a trillion trillion possible combinations of 10 explanatory variables. With 1 million possible explanatory variables, the number of 10-variable combinations grows to nearly a million trillion trillion trillion trillion (if we were to write it out, there would be 54 zeros). Stepwise regression was born back when computers were much slower than today, but it has become a popular data-mining tool because it is less computationally demanding than a full search over all possible combinations of explanatory variables but, it is hoped, will still give a reasonable approximation to the results of a full search. The stepwise label comes from the fact that the calculations go through a number of steps, considering potential explanatory variables one by one. There are three main stepwise procedures. A forward-selection rule starts with the one explanatory variable that has the highest correlation with the variable being predicted. Then the procedure adds a second variable, the variable that improves the fit the most.

Full text
Abstract:
Establishing pipeline integrity requires an understanding of the specific threats, their relationship to the overall condition of the pipeline, and the mitigating measures required to assure safe operation. In the past, the pipeline industry relied on years of research and experience to develop a set of tools to analyze these threats and apply conservative solutions to ensure pipeline integrity. With the implementation of the Integrity Management Program (IMP) in 2004 by the Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA), pipeline integrity must be addressed by operators where the analysis methods and results must be documented and defendable. This paper presents a detailed discussion of how existing knowledge, advances in analytical techniques, experimental methods, and engineering rigor are combined to develop field-friendly tools to characterize and ensure pipeline integrity. Two case studies are included, the first, to demonstrate how the proposed method was used to assess the integrity of a corroded elbow, the second, provides the reader with an example of how to develop a tool for evaluating the severity of dents in pipelines using available public-domain research. It is the hope of the authors that the approach presented in this paper will foster further developments and advanced pipeline integrity management.

Abstract:
Bioengineering is a technological miracle of health care and future health hope. From the entrepreneurial contributions of William Kolff with the original handmade dialysis machine to the application of the x-ray to medical diagnostics and treatment, biomedical pioneers brought technology to medical care, often at great personal risk. Few can conceive the magnitude of the impact of technology on our ability to return the sick and disabled to function. The “simple” steel and plastic hip implant is a technological wonder. The human is the most demanding of systems to be repaired by technology. The stress levels, cycle loading, chemical degradation and even biological rejection are without precedent in engineering application. Reliability is expected to be near 100%. Psychological and cosmetic compatibility are severe constraints. The current quality of life of many (if not most) of us is dependent upon technology, and forefront technology at that. The dentist no longer hurts and our teeth last longer. Numerous “replacements” are cosmetically acceptable. Medical diagnosties are everywhere, but have a long way to go. Emergency medicine is high-tech. The wonders of bioengineering are in our present and in our future. It is informative to review our bioengineering heritage from early orthopedics (splints, peg legs and crutches), through mobility facilitation (wheelchairs) and internal repair (aortic patches and arterial replacement) to modern diagnostics (MRI) and organ replacement (artificial hearts, kidneys, etc.). A recent renewed interest in biomedical devices paralleling the decoding of the genome and the proposed genetic future portends what Dr. Francis Fukuyama of Johns Hopkins called “Our Post Human Future.” We will explore our historical pathway to what we will call “our better human future through bioengineering.”

Abstract:
Pemex Exploration Produccio´n owns and operates several fields in the Bay of Campeche, located in the south Gulf of Mexico, for oil and gas production. Many of these fixed offshore platforms were built during the 70s and 80s and have already exceeded their design service life. In order to meet the growing demand for oil and natural gas it is necessary to extend the service life of these platforms by at least another 15 to 30 years. To meet this extended service life, thorough and systematic reassessment studies need to be conducted leading to identification of any structural weakness and possible locations of fatigue problems. To extend the fatigue life of the welded joints, inspections are required to be performed according to a risk based inspection planning procedure. In the present paper, an overview of the reassessment study procedure is outlined and pertinent results are presented for more than twenty platforms which were studied in a recent project. The most important engineering considerations and various analyses involved in the study are discussed in detail. The platforms cover the categories of Drilling, Production, Gathering and Habitation. Depending on the category, Pemex specifications assign different levels of acceptable reliabilities and reserve strength ratios. The ultimate strength of the platforms is determined using a detailed finite element model of jacket, piles and deck structures and a state-of-the-art non-linear progressive collapse analysis technique commonly known as ‘pushover’ analysis. The analytical structural models include local joint flexibility of the jacket joints, soil-pile interaction, geometric non-linearity and material plasticity. They also include the information of damages and deterioration obtained from inspection reports, such as dents, bents, cracks etc. The joint strength modeling is performed using the latest available procedures that use non-linear load-deformation curves. Fatigue analyses are based on spectral analysis technique and include the dynamic response of the structure to wave loads. The structural models for fatigue analysis include the effects of local joint flexibility (LJF) and soil-pile interaction. Results for one typical platform are presented in complete detail to facilitate the understanding of the reassessment study procedure. A typical risk based inspection planning for extending fatigue service life is also presented. Finally, the summary of results for 28 platforms is presented to appreciate the importance of the various analytical parameters. It is hoped that this very wide database of results for platforms of different configurations can serve as a useful resource for the offshore industry in general.
