Justin Martyr, in his First Apology, disputes the way Christians were being judged before the Roman magistrates. Because he does not agree with this, he exposes his arguments in favor of Christians. In order to strengthen his argument, Justin brings us past and contemporary events and relies on his eschatological hopes. The use of temporalities in his arguments led us to ask how he understood his present time. Based on the historical time of definition proposed by Reinhart Koselleck, we set out to analyze the First Apology to understand Justin's look towards his own time. We look after, in this way, to try to understand what factors underlie his tension, which would explain its vision of the world. In the search for a better understanding of these factors, we propose three steps: To broaden the knowledge about our source through the study of its form and content to analyze the most present intertextuality in his work (his conception of prophet and prophecy from Judeo-Christian literature) and, finally, the way he dealt with past, present, and future temporalities.

Coetzee, Liesel. "Beyond the horizon : an enquiry into the production and reception of the writing of Enid Blyton." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29075.

Abstract:
This study explores reasons for Enid Blyton’s vast popularity. Blyton and her life are discussed in terms of the production and reception of her texts in the light of changing dominant discourses in society and varying horizons of expectation. It has been found that selected aspects of reception theory (in particular the horizon of expectation posited by Hans-Georg Gadamer and developed by Hans Jauss) and the theories of Michel Foucault on power and discourse can be used to examine the influence of societal and literary discourses on both Blyton’s writing and on those who read her work, including adults and children. The study includes a discussion of Blyton’s personal life, her role in education and her success in business. Blyton’s horizons of expectation – shaped not only by the dominant discourses that surrounded her, but also her training in the Froebel method of education – are examined. Furthermore, a number of aspects of Blyton’s life and writing subvert dominant discourses and these are discussed in terms of Foucault’s ideas on power relations. Evidence of the influence of her life on her work has been found in her texts. The criticism of Blyton is discussed in terms of both literary criticism and social criticism. Blyton’s popularity as a storyteller is also considered and it has been found that, regardless of criticism by adults, she remained popular with children. Furthermore, Blyton used a number of specific techniques (such as fast-paced plots and simple language and style) and it has been found that her techniques can be linked to both formula writing, the oral tradition, and to her training as a teacher in the Froebel method of education. These techniques are examined in terms of their manifestation in her writing, particularly in her series books – including adventure stories and school stories. In conclusion, the place of Blyton’s writing in contemporary society is deliberated and recommendations for further research are made.

Liu, Victoria Xiaoyang. "The Reception of Mo Yan in the British and North American Literary Centers." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Engelska institutionen, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-115370.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the two major conflicting modes of interpretation applied to Mo Yan’s literary texts diachronically and synchronically in order to reveal both the aesthetic imperative and the liberating force of the British and North American literary centers in receiving literature from the periphery. After an introduction to the centers’ disparate responses to the paradigmatic shift of the local Chinese literary trend in the 1980s, the thesis continues with a theoretical discussion on reader-response theory and the uneven power relations between the literary center and the periphery. Jauss’s concept of horizon of expectation and Fish’s interpretive community are adopted to stress openness in interpretation while Casanova’s conceptualization of the world republic of letters provides the framework to study the competition among interpretive communities for the legitimacy of their respective interpretation. The study of the press reception of Mo Yan focuses on the ongoing shift of horizon of expectation from the dominating political and representational mode of interpretation to one that stresses the literary and fictional nature of literature. The study shows that the imperative in the reception of Mo Yan is the extension of the Western cultural hegemony sustained by an Orientalist dichotomy. The academic promotion in the public sphere, however, shows critics’ effort to subvert such domination by suggesting an alternative mode that brings the Chinese literary context to bear on the interpretation. In addition to this, Mo Yan’s strategic negotiation with the dominating mode of reception is analysed in my close reading of POW!. At the end of the thesis, I call for general readers to raise the awareness of the hegemonic tendency of any prevailing mode of interpretation. By asserting a certain distance, readers enable the openness in interpretation and hence possible communication among different communities.

Sheibanian, Maryam. Thesis, Paris 4, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA040059.

Abstract:
The work of Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio has already been the subject of numerous investigations, but they provide little lights on the potential reader who is nevertheless an essential literary phenomenon. The role of the reader as receiver of the work has a particular importance on the quality of the act of communication because he receives the book with the sum of his prejudices and aspirations. He participates in the production of meaning and development of themes that run through the work of the writer. What is the virtual reader’s image as projected in the text of Le Clézio? What is his role in creating the work? And how does the author manage to minimize the distance between writing and reading? We try to answer these questions by making a sémiostylistique analysis on short story cycles of the writer : Fever, Mondo and Other Stories, The Round and Other cold Hard Facts, Spring and other seasons and Burn Heart and Other Romances

This research analyses Monteiro Lobato’s times in the composition of the Brazilian nation, between the years 1914-1927. The writer understood socioeconomic cultural inequalities inherent to the increasing inclusion of the country in the capitalist economy, integrating the most remote corners of the country to the frenzy of the offer, the demand and the competition, through temporal concepts, highlighting the different cadences of the transformation of the Brazilian society. According to this view, the past is something anachronistic, backward and obsolete; the future is “tomorrow”, the modern and the progress. There was a tension between the space of experience related to the caboclos from blackland, “dead cities” and the misery in the backlands and the horizon of expectation represented by the sequence of technological developments, the North American advance and Henry Ford’s principles of prosperity according to Reinhart Koselleck’ s categories. So, I investigate the elaborate projects in order to cadence the time of the nation and finally build the imagined community called Brazil as a nation where the “jecas” would be integrated to the progress through new conditions of work. Monteiro Lobato, through the fictional universe of the Yellow Woodpecker Farm, (re)connected past/future or traditional/modern, removing unethical aspects of these concepts and finding their synthesis. Monteiro Lobato’s complete works constitute the sources of this dissertation as his short stories, novel, journalistic texts, stories and texts about art critic.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how a group of 21 young people narrate and reflect on their lives within the framework of long interviews. The participants were interviewed at the ages of 15, 17, 22 and 25 years. The interviews are analysed as life-stories, a theoretical and methodological perspective which illuminates the interviewees ways of interpreting and constructing meaning in their lives. The study has two aims: firstly it is a contemporary study with the goal of investi-gating what the conditions for entering adulthood are, and how young people relate to becoming an adult. Secondly it is a study of method which places great importance on how life-stories are constructed situationally and culturally. These two perspectives are linked by the strong connections that exist between the young people’s way of understanding themselves and the life-stories they construct. The work is concentrated to three main questions: how experience and expectation interplay in the participants stories, how their stories relate to dominant cultural narratives, and how meanings of becoming an adult are constructed and change over time in their life-stories. The process of becoming an adult mainly involves the search for identity, autonomy and place in society. The study demonstrates how this can be understood as a process where experiences from the past interplay with expectations for the future. It highlights the complexity and diversity of the transition from youth to adulthood, and the fact that meanings of adulthood are neither self-evident nor definite. Life-stories as told by the participants arise to a large degree in negotiation with narrative life-scripts. These scripts structure the stories and provide a basis for evaluation of their own lives. The study also points out that young people´s life stories are part of a double hermeneutic process where a “Grand Narrative” about the individualised society is interpreted and reproduced.

Abstract:
Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie were the most successful British women writers of their time. Christie and Blyton were contemporaries, living and writing in the United Kingdom during the first half of the twentieth century. This study takes into consideration these similarities in its examination of the depiction of dominant discourses in relation to emergent, alternative and oppositional discourses in their writing. This thesis suggests that while Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie offer alternatives to the dominant patriarchal discourses of the British Empire in the first half of the twentieth century, they show allegiance, too, to the dominant discourses of their time. Specific consideration is given to the portrayal of discourses concerned with gender, feminism, classism, British colonialism, racism, and xenophobia in their writing. The work of Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie was extremely popular in their time and still is today. Their important contribution to popular literature in England in the early twentieth century justifies a study of a selection of their work in relation to detective fiction and children’s literature as well as to studies of social history that include the investigation of how dominant discourse is both endorsed and challenged.

Abstract:
The corpus of this essay is mainly to study accurately the following literary compositions: A Maior Flor do Mundo by José Saramago, O Gato e o Escuro by Mia Couto and O Mistério do Coelho Pensante by Clarice Lispector for childish readers. The undertaken analyses has as a theoretical reference Estética da Recepção by Hans Robert Jauss and Teoria do Efeito Estético by Wolfgang Iser, tendencies wich take the reader as an active active element in the act of reading, letting him/her go deeply into the text and fill in the blanks left by the authors who make the reader formulate what was not said through his/her imagination. The language of the mentioned books works as the readers instrument of perception and childhood symbol, so that they will be so amazing, fantastic and wonderful without having the function of controlling and moralizing , which made children not to express themselves with freedom in the past. When concepts as reception, effect horizon of expectations and implicit reader are worked, we try to explain how the reading involves children and its introduction in the cultural context of sense production. The analysed literary compositions contribute to make analytical and thoughtful readers object life experiences. The book illustrations do not appear as only verbal text complement, but also getting expression and esthetic meanings

Abstract: The low reading score indicated by international assessments, such as the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), and by state assessments, such as the School Performance Evaluation System of the State of São Paulo (SARESP), justifies the need for research that analyzes and produces methodological proposals aiming at developing reading repertoire. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate strategies that will add to the body of knowledge of Behavioral Analysis regarding planning and evaluating teaching conditions, for the development of reading comprehension skills of literary texts, as in these students have shown a lower performance in SARESP, 2018. As an interdisciplinary research, it borrows from theorical contributions of Linguistics of Enunciation and Reception Theory in order to elaborate the planning according to literature pedagogy. It is a participatory research conducted during night classes with 35 freshman-year high school students, among which 12 were selected to be followed as a class sample, in a peripheral school within São Paulo school district. The procedure used is divided into four phases, each comprising different stages: Phase 1 aims at characterizing oficial documents of the State Department of Education, such as the State Curriculum and the Evaluation Matrices, highlighting the theoretical and methodological guidelines that support the teaching-learning process. Perry, Amber R. "Critiquing Academic Culture with Satire through Lady Lazarus, A Fictional Biography." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2013. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1700.

Abstract:
In the tradition of academic satire, Lady Lazarus is the fictional biography of the daughter of American rock musicians. In her late teens she rises to fame as confessional poet, who, despite only publishing one collection of poems during her brief life, becomes an overnight sensation. Author Andrew Altschul is satirizing academia’s need to be a part of popular culture and in doing so, privileges the ability to use controversy and conventional beauty to sell books as opposed to creating quality art. By focusing on how the author uses Hans Robert Jauss’ horizons of expectations, unreliable narrators, anecdotes in biography and the economics of fame as a deciding factor in academia, the author has created a dense and punitive opinion of academia’s inclusion of popular culture into its world.

Abstract:
The writer Campos de Carvalho published his major novels between 1956 and 1964 having a relatively indifferent reception from critics. Writing in a time when the national developmentalism reigned in the country and under the auspices of committed literature, he was excluded from the canonical works of his time. With the military coup of 1964 began to be significant changes in the Brazilian cultural field, when the engagement began to be challenged. This rupture occurred abruptly in 1968 when, with the decree of Institutional Act No. 5, the standards of the national artistic production began to reflect this new reality. With an extremely violent state and democratic freedoms limited by repression and censorship, it took new artistic expression of spaces such as call alternative press. In this new context, marked by movements such counterculture, marginality and Tropicalismo, Campos de Carvalho and his work began to be reevaluated, finding new interpretative horizons for its literature. Contributing as a columnist for O Pasquim, found new readers.

Li, Hao. "The role of CEO compensation in the cost of debt, expectations management, and the investment policy of UK firms." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/3024.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I explore the topic of chief executive officer (CEO) compensation in UK publicly traded firms. My objective is threefold. First of all, I investigate debt-holders‟ reaction to CEO compensation in terms of the cost of debt financing. Secondly, I examine the possible link between CEO compensation and expectation management. Thirdly, I examine whether and how the interactive relation between CEO career horizon and compensation package affects a firm‟s research and development spending. Multiple regression is employed in this thesis to investigate the causal relationship between these above mentioned aspects I‟m interested (the cost of debt, expectation management and research and development spending) and CEO compensation. I consider all major compensation components for a typical CEO in UK publicly traded firms: defined benefit pension, bonus, restricted shares, traditional stock options and performance-vested stock options. The accumulated equity incentives, such as ownership, are also examined. My major findings are as follows. First of all, I find that an increase in defined benefit pension and bonus in CEO compensation are associated with a lower bond yield spread, while an increase in stock options and ownership intensifies it. Secondly, I document that CEO equity incentives that will be vested in the following year are positively associated with the probability of employing expectation management to meet or beat financial analysts‟ forecasts about a firm‟s reporting earnings. Thirdly, I demonstrate that older CEOs will not spend less in research and development expenditures in general. However, older CEOs with more defined benefit pensions and ownership are reluctant to engage in such an investment. iii My results generate several implications for CEO compensation research. First of all, I show that debt-holders rationally incorporate the information of CEO compensation about risk-taking and risk-avoiding incentives when pricing a firm‟s publicly traded debts. Secondly, I provide the evidence that CEO compensation motivates top managers to manipulate information disclosure by employing expectation management for personal gains. Thirdly, the joint influence of CEO career horizon and compensation package on a firm‟s research and development spending is highlighted. CEO compensation motivates a short-sighed and risk-averse investment policy when top managers have a short career horizon. The first novel contribution in this thesis is the coverage of CEO pension, which is overlooked by the most of previous literature on compensation studies. Secondly, I provide the evidence that the popularity of expectation management in the UK, which is well documented in the literature, can be partly explained by CEO compensation. Finally, the interactive relation between CEO compensation and career horizon on a firm‟s investment policy is re-examined. It provides further material in the debate of career horizon problem, which has no consensus in the previous literature. Overall, this thesis generates some empirical evidence about the influence of CEO compensation on managerial behaviour. Some adverse effects of CEO compensation highlighted in this thesis may help remuneration committee to design a better pay package for top managers in the future.

Abstract:
In this scientific essay: The art of being a specialist and listening, I reflect and examine my practice as a professional in the area of HR. I examine some of the expectations that I and my surrounding have on me and my professional role. How do I do when I meet conflicting expectations? How should I understand the way I’m acting at work? I retell three situations from meetings with managers taken from my work experience. These stories help me to make my practical knowledge visible. Through these examples, and the questions above I let my profession meet modern management research and theories about interpretation, context and specialist role from the philosophers Paul Feyerabend and Hans-Georg Gadamer. I conclude that my practical knowledge is to read the complexity and expectations in the situation I find myself and dare to remain in uncertainty without having the answers given, I have to stay in the process, and when I do, solutions will be given to me. The importance of being able to listen turns out as an important part of my practical knowledge. Another important insight is that my role as HR employees are dependent on it just me in a certain context practicing my profession and to my person and my role is intimately linked in my profession. You can not separate us.

Abstract:
Provide clarity to the feelings and reasons that emerge from the experiences of the students in Vitória-ES, between 2009-2010, and what move them toward their professional projects is the goal of this work. The notion of design used here (Velho, 1999) differs from the classical liberal understanding of human being, autonomous, free and unique, responsible for their successes and failures, underlie to studies on "career choice". The proposed idea is that the field experiences of the subjects mark their professional projects, but their deliberate conduct, not necessarily rational, expose certain life expectations, whatever is the social position of these individuals. To test these expectations, these subjects were seen in their social relations on the intersections of class, gender, ethnicity, generations, etc. It was recognized also that the reasons and feelings (WILLIAMS, 1969) also forge professional projects of subjects under different social conditions and in spite of them. Considering that these projects carry human manifestations not always visible, often covered, the metaphor of "rhizome" (DELEUZE; GUATTARI, 2004) was useful as methodology. Evidences (GINZBURG, 2007) suggested research paths and some of the meanings attributed by those subject to these projects could be detected. The prospect of long-term historical and multiple times chaired the examination of trajectories of a selected group of subjects studied between the years 2009-2010, which favored the perception of historical continuities, but also the occurrence of certain changes in social trends. Two pre-university courses, one public and one private, in Vitória, ES, at this juncture, showed a bit of a plurality of different expectations of young people - poor, middle and upper classes, men and women, whites, blacks and browns, younger and older in relation to high school - present in their professional projects. Reasons and feelings that move them and that move is not always considered in studies on the subject, were exposed. Contributions of Elias (1990), Williams (1969), Bourdieu (2003, 2009), E. P. Thompson (2002), Löwy (1990), among others, supported evidences that the relation between individual and society, always plural and complex, express only parts of their civilizing senses. To reduce uncertainties, it was used macro and micro data (Revel, 1998). Interviews with these teenagers and advisers, observations from group dynamics and also examination of official publications, periodicals to disseminate material on vestibular, between 2009-2010, were located a tract of analytical scales difficult to exercise. Apart from relations of class, gender, skin color, generation, etc., is possible to conclude that these subjects, for reasons and various feelings, with their professional projects, move are not from their social origin, but all of them, in their new experiences and different ways, also prepare themselves to act on the senses civilizing of his time.

Price, Emma Luthi. "CrashCourse Literature: Public Humanities by Reception." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8956.

Abstract:
CrashCourse Literature and other educational YouTube videos are essential mechanisms for connecting students and the general public to the humanities. Public humanities projects are in an intellectual tug-of-war between what academia and the diverse developing public want them to be, but that contention can and should be mediated using new media tools like CrashCourse Literature. CrashCourse Literature's emphasis on bringing the reader to the text and the text to the reader, echoes the goals of reception theory. Reception theory focuses on finding meaning in a literary text using the reader's horizon of expectations more than an a traditional, essentialist, "original' reading of a text. Analyzing public humanities projects like CrashCourse Literature through the lens of reception theory can help to show why the public uses them to connect more fully with the humanities. Within the texts of the videos "Fate, Family, and Oedipus Rex: Crash Course Literature 202," "Shakespeare's Sonnets: Crash Course Literature 304", "Like Pale Gold--The Great Gatsby Part I: Crash Course English Literature #4," and "Was Gatsby Great? The Great Gatsby Part 2: Crash Course English Literature #5," I see two distinct levels of reception that influence and strengthen each other: 1. First level of reception: CrashCourse interacts with and refracts the texts they are explicating based on where the reader is in time and space. 2. Meta-reception: CrashCourse interacts and connects with the viewers of the video by interpreting their viewers' responses to said text. CrashCourse's use of popular culture references, references to current or familiar social, political, and cultural ideologies, jokes, validations of viewers previous literary experiences, informal language all situated well within sound academic scholarship constitute examples of first-level and meta-reception. CrashCourse Literature sees the humanities, and fictional literature in particular, as exercises in empathy. Accordingly, they treat their approach to the text (first-level reception) and their viewers response to the text (meta-reception) with the same empathetic care. Public humanities projects that use new media well, allow public access to and connection with scholarly discussion and information. If academic institutions want to continue humanities research and discussion in a way that keeps their publics enthusiastically engaged, they will find good tools in CrashCourse Literature, which is engaging precisely in the kind of intellectual work and dialogue the academic establishment needs in order to stay relevant and significant to the publics they serve.

Abstract:

Written by the Italian novelist and essayist Italo Calvino, and published by Einaudi in 1979, If on a winter’s night a traveler is one of the most significant metafictional works of Western literature, to the extent that the author reveals the mechanisms of narration, triggering a reflection about the practice of writing and reading, as well as about the relationship between the writer, the text and the reader in the literary work itself. Thus, this dissertation aims to demonstrate how the novel If on a winter’s night a traveler operates on the horizon of expectations of the Reader – the protagonist of the novel, taking as theoretical references the Philosophical hermeneutics, the Aesthetics of reception and effect, as well as the conceptions derived from the studies of region and regionality. It is observed, in this sense, concepts and categories intrinsically associated with the horizon of expectations of the Reader, such as hermeneutic experience, aesthetic experience, empty spaces, region, and regionality.

Abstract:
The diploma work "The differences between perception of metonymy in photography and in movies from the perspective of reception aesthetics" deals with different uses of the figure of speech - metonymy - in visual communication. The metonymy is primarily used as an ornamental device of language expression. It is also distinguishable in purely visual information that is provided in photography and certain film shots. In visual communication, metonymy is also used for embellishing of the visual content or, at least, its correction. This work is focused especially on these examples of the use of metonymy that employ the method of reception aesthetics, which was up to now applied only to literary works. The subjects of interest of the reception aesthetics are so- called places of indeterminacy and the horizon of expectation which is also the focus of this work in addition to its main focus on metonymic expression in movies and photography. The first part of this work deals with the theory of the reception aesthetics and its main exponents. The second part deals with the relationship between the recipients and the media, specifically photography and movie. The last part of this work deals with the theory of rhetorical figures, particularly metonymy and its special form - synecdoche, and it's application...

Abstract:
anglicky: Title of the thesis: Horizon of expectations of Czech and French speaking readers of children's literature Keywords: czech and french children's literature, horizon of expectations, reception of literature, reader, writer's strategy, Petr Nikl, Philippe Lechermeier Abstract: The study entitled Horizon of expectations of Czech and French speaking readers of children's literature is concerned with the reception of children's literature in Czech and French speaking environment. The aim of the thesis is to find out if and how the expectations of the readers change with their literary context and to discover the extent to which the contemporary writers Petr Nikl and Philippe Lechermeier come to meet their audiences. To answer this question various methodological procedures are employed: observation and then comparison of Czech and French literary context to form the hypotheses. The hypotheses are verified by the case study based on the analyses of two books (Záhádky by Petr Nikl and Le Journal secret de Petit Poucet form Philippe Lechermeier) and on the analyses of critical reviews and comments. We discovered the writer's strategies and the expectations of the readers and we compared them with our hypotheses to make a final appraisal. The thesis is divided into eight parts: Introduction, 1....

Larochelle, Audrey.

Full text
Abstract:
The means of producing an image have always been influenced by the inscription of a tangible physical reality. The digital image, which is a distinct method of visual rendering, should therefore change our relationship to visual representations. However, in reality, is the viewer’s experience of digital images in any way different from those issued by the recording techniques? To answer this question, this thesis mainly analyzes, using the semio-pragmatic approach, how the viewer's perception is conditioned through the recording techniques (photography, film and video). Then, this study compares the habits and visual expectations generated by these techniques with digital images. Finally, this study attempts to expand the problem of digital rupture into a broader perspective, and establish the question in the global tradition of artistic representation.

Abstract:
Focusing on the different roles of sound in horror videogames, this master thesis aims to expose the cognitive process of a gamer during his gameplay activity. From the structure of the soundscape to the production of meaning through the sound’s functions, this research measures the implication of audio in the creation of a mise en scène of videoludic fear. As a means to do so, it presents, evaluates and develops a plurality of concepts about gameplay, modes of listening, diegesis, sound generators, systemic and immersive audio functions, and the building of fear with different sound strategies.

Berto, Tony. "Are We There Yet? Gay Representation in Contemporary Canadian Drama." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/7372.

Full text
Abstract:
This study acknowledges that historical antipathies towards gay men have marginalised their theatrical representation in the past. However, over the last century a change has occurred in the social location of gay men in Canada (from being marginalised to being included). Given these changes, questions arise as to whether staged representations of gay men are still marginalised today. Given antipathies towards homosexuality and homophobia may contribute to the how theatres determine the riskiness of productions, my investigation sought a correlation between financial risk in theatrical production and the marginalisation of gay representations on stage. Furthermore, given that gay sex itself, and its representation on stage, have been theorised as loci of antipathies to gayness, I investigate the relationship between the visibility and overtness of gay sex in a given play and the production of that play’s proximity to the mainstream. The study located four plays from across the spectrum of production conditions (from high to low financial risk) in BC. Analysis of these four plays shows general trends, not only in the plays’ constructions but also in the material conditions of their productions that indicate that gay representations become more overt, visible and sexually explicit when less financial risk was at stake. Various factors are identified – including the development of the script, the producing theatre, venue, and promotion of the production – that shape gay representation. The analysis reveals that historical theatrical practices, that have had the effect of marginalizing the representations of gays in the past, are still in place. These practices appear more prevalent the higher the financial risk of the production.
