Abstract:
Solidification during horizontal continuous casting of low carbon steel billets with cyclic withdrawal was simulated and the wavy profile of the solidifying shell characteristic of this process was reproduced. Effects of rate of withdrawal cycle, superheat and casting speed were determined. In order to carry out this simulation in a personal computer, efficient numerical techniques had to be developed for mesh refinement by coordinate transformation, interfaces with temperature discontinuities and re-entrant corners. A flexible means of mesh generation involving polynomials was also developed.

Abstract This paper is aimed at the investigation of the diffusion boundary layer near the cooled casting surface encountered in the horizontal continuous casting process of carbon steel. The strip casting process is a relatively new continuous casting process. This process makes it possible to produce high-quality flat steel products directly, without using hot rolling. This explains why this process is very attractive for industry. Extensive numerical simulations under equilibrium and nonequilibrium assumptions provide valuable insight into the physics of diffusion boundary layer.

Abstract Thermal spraying and thixoforging technologies can be combined in a new manufacturing method for the production of light metal matrix composites. Laminated prepregs are produced by coating unidirectional fiber bundles with light metal matrix material. The prepregs are heated up and densified by thixoforging to near net-shape composites. Compared to conventional technologies for the integration of fibers in light metal matrices, like squeeze casting, hot pressing and diffusion bonding, this method offers the possibility to realize complex component geometries with short cycle times.
