Abstract:
A range of hormonal manipulations have been proposed as adjunctive therapy during critical care. These therapies might be used to treat a pre-existing or acquired hormonal disorder. Additionally, hormonal manipulation has been suggested to alter the long-term outcome of critical illness, even in patients without structural abnormalities of endocrine glands. Currently, the effectiveness of these anabolic therapies has not been established and they might be harmful in some patient groups. Recently, it has been recognized that many critically-ill patients have low levels of vitamin D and this is

Abstract:
Hormone therapy describes the role of hormones in the growth of a variety of cancers, and the therapeutic effects of manipulation of hormone levels in these diseases. Sex hormones stimulate the growth of breast and prostate cancers, many of which respond to surgical removal of the hormone-secreting gonad. Pharmacological measures to deliver hormone therapy in these diseases include luteinising hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists and antagonists, inhibitors of sex hormone synthesis, and inhibitors of hormone-receptor binding. These treatments have established benefits in both in the contr

Abstract:
Bringing the concept of contamination into dialogue with affect theory and bioart, Agnieszka Anna Wołodźko urges us to rethink our relationship with ourselves, each other and other organisms. Thinking through the lens of contamination, this book provides an innovative approach to understanding the leaky, porous and visceral nature of our bodies and their endless interrelationships and, in doing so, uncovers new ways for thinking about embodiment. Affect theory has long been interested in transmission or contagion but, inspired by Spinoza and Deleuze, Affect as Contamination goes further, as co

Abstract:
The advent of recombinant human erythropoietin (epoetin) in the late 1980s transformed the management of renal anaemia, liberating many dialysis patients from lifelong regular blood transfusions, in turn causing severe iron overload and human leucocyte antigen sensitization. Epoetin can be administered either intravenously or subcutaneously, but the half-life of the drug is fairly short at around 6–8 hours, necessitating frequent injections. To circumvent this problem, two manipulations to the erythropoietin molecule were engineered. The first of these was to attach an extra two carbohydrate c
