Abstract:
As Artificial Intelligence researchers attempt to emulate human intelligence and transhumanists work toward superintelligence, philosophers and theologians confront a dilemma: we must either, on the one horn, (1) abandon the view that the defining feature of humanity is rationality and propose an account of spirituality that dissociates it from reason; or, on the other horn, (2) find a way to invalidate the growing faith in a posthuman future shaped by the enhancements of Intelligence Amplification (IA) or the progress of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I grasp both horns of the dilemma and offer three recommendations. First, it is love understood as agape, not rational intelligence, which tells us how to live a godly life. Love tells us how to be truly human. Second, the transhumanist vision of a posthuman superintelligence is not only unrealistic, it portends the kind of tragedy we expect from a false messiah. Third, if as a byproduct of AI and IA research combined with H+ zeal the wellbeing of the human species and our planet is enhanced, we should be grateful.

Abstract:
The origin and integration of novel traits are fundamental processes during the developmental evolution of complex organisms. Yet how novel traits integrate into pre-existing contexts remains poorly understood. Beetle horns represent a spectacular evolutionary novelty integrated within the context of the adult dorsal head, a highly conserved trait complex present since the origin of insects. We investigated whether otd1/2 and six3 , members of a highly conserved gene network that instructs the formation of the anterior end of most bilaterians, also play roles in patterning more recently evolved traits. Using ablation-based fate-mapping, comparative larval RNA interference (RNAi) and transcript sequencing, we found that otd1/2 , but not six3 , play a fundamental role in the post-embryonic formation of the adult dorsal head and head horns of Onthophagus beetles. By contrast, neither gene appears to pattern the adult head of Tribolium flour beetles even though all are expressed in the dorsal head epidermis of both Onthophagus and Tribolium . We propose that, at least in beetles, the roles of otd genes during post-embryonic development are decoupled from their embryonic functions, and that potentially non-functional post-embryonic expression in the dorsal head facilitated their co-option into a novel horn-patterning network during Onthophagus evolution.

Abstract:
IntroductionBilateral anterior horn cell hyperintensity on spinal imaging (‘snake eyes’ sign) is seen in pathologies including cervical spondylosis, spinal cord infarction and Hirayama’s disease. Below is the first report of lower limb monomelic amyotrophy (MMA) with thoracic spine snake eyes sign. We present a case report of lower limb MMA with bilateral anterior horn hyperintensity, and literature review of cases with this clinico-radiologic presentation.CaseA 47 year old man presented with an 11 year history of asymmetric, progressive, proximal right lower limb weakness and wasting following traumatic back injury. Eight years into the disease course left leg changes developed. There was no upper limb, bulbar nor respiratory involvement. Examination revealed widespread lower limb wasting, normal tone, marked proximal weakness, brisk reflexes and non-sustained clonus bilaterally. Upper limb and cranial nerve examinations were normal. MRI demonstrated T11–12 bilateral anterior horn cell hyper-intensity. Electromyography demonstrated denervation/re-innervation changes in the right vastus lateralis and to a lesser extent tibialis anterior. Muscle biopsy showed chronic denervation atrophy. Anti-ganglioside GM1 IgM was elevated. Further autoimmune testing, infectious screen, cerebrospinal fluid and neuromuscular disease gene analysis were negative. Steroid and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy were ineffective.Case series describing lower motor neuron diseases (LMND) including MMA have not previously reported snake eyes sign in association with lower limb disease.1 Two recent publications describing thirty-two cases of LMND with cervical spine snake eyes sign report that all cases were associated with a relatively benign course and many were misdiagnosed as motor neuron disease (MND).2 3 The authors propose this as a previously unidentified mimic of motor neuron disease.ConclusionThis is the first reported case of thoracic snake eyes sign with corresponding lower limb MMA. Lower motor neuron diseases with bilateral anterior horn cell hyper-intensity may represent a unique clinical form of MND with relatively slower progression.References. Abstract:
The AGM framework is the benchmark approach in belief change. Since the framework assumes an underlying logic containing classical Propositional Logic, it can not be applied to systems with a logic weaker than Propositional Logic. To remedy this limitation, several researchers have studied AGM-style contraction and revision under the Horn fragment of Propositional Logic (i.e., Horn logic). In this paper, we contribute to this line of research by investigating the Horn version of the AGM entrenchment-based contraction. The study is challenging as the construction of entrenchment-based contraction refers to arbitrary disjunctions which are not expressible under Horn logic. In order to adapt the construction to Horn logic, we make use of a Horn approximation technique called Horn strengthening. We provide a representation theorem for the newly constructed contraction which we refer to as entrenchment-based Horn contraction. Ideally, contractions defined under Horn logic (i.e., Horn contractions) should be as rational as AGM contraction. We propose the notion of Horn equivalence which intuitively captures the equivalence between Horn contraction and AGM contraction. We show that, under this notion, entrenchment-based Horn contraction is equivalent to a restricted form of entrenchment-based contraction.

Abstract:
Reverse horn as one of the Acoustic Black Hole (ABH) structures can be used to effectively reduce low frequency acoustic waves by focusing the sound energy. The sound waves in relatively low frequency range are focused on the tip of reverse horn, and most sound energy cannot flow out from the reverse horn’s tip. In this paper, we propose a quantitative analysis method by the bottleneck effect analogy to research the low frequency acoustic characteristics of reverse horn. Our theoretical results show that the low frequency sound wave can be focused on the tip of reverse horn, and the transmission coefficient of low frequency is proportional to the 3 power law of the reverse horn tip’s diameter. The experimental results verified our theoretical results. And the sound insulation property is studied by experiments. It is noteworthy that the insulation coefficient of two levels reverse horn whose second level tip’s diameter [Formula: see text] mm, is more than 0.92, and can increase further with the decrease of the second level horn tip’s diameter. It provides an effective and simple method for quantitatively analyzing the low frequency acoustic characteristics of the reverse horn. The proposed reverse horn has great potential applications for low frequency sound insulation control.

Abstract:
Approximating a general formula from above and below by Horn formulas (its Horn envelope and Horn core, respectively) was proposed by Selman and Kautz (1991, 1996) as a form of ``knowledge compilation,'' supporting rapid approximate reasoning; on the negative side, this scheme is static in that it supports no updates, and has certain complexity drawbacks pointed out by Kavvadias, Papadimitriou and Sideri (1993). On the other hand, the many frameworks and schemes proposed in the literature for theory update and revision are plagued by serious complexity-theoretic impediments, even in the Horn case, as was pointed out by Eiter and Gottlob (1992), and is further demonstrated in the present paper. More fundamentally, these schemes are not inductive, in that they may lose in a single update any positive properties of the represented sets of formulas (small size, Horn structure, etc.). In this paper we propose a new scheme, incremental recompilation, which combines Horn approximation and model-based updates; this scheme is inductive and very efficient, free of the problems facing its constituents. A set of formulas is represented by an upper and lower Horn approximation. To update, we replace the upper Horn formula by the Horn envelope of its minimum-change update, and similarly the lower one by the Horn core of its update; the key fact which enables this scheme is that Horn envelopes and cores are easy to compute when the underlying formula is the result of a minimum-change update of a Horn formula by a clause. We conjecture that efficient algorithms are possible for more complex updates.

Abstract:
Within modern frequency structures, the filter frequency region of up to 10 MHz constitutes a promising research topic that currently attracts intensive attention of specialists interested in the problem. The main reason of this fact consists in that the rapid development of modern technology allows the production of innovated structures of the analog frequency filters required in the defined band. In this context, however, it is also necessary to refine the methods applied in the synthesis and optimization of these structures; such improvement should be carried out with respect to fundamental properties and usability of today's active elements (operational amplifiers with voltage feedback whose Gain Bandwidth Product ranges within units of GHz, operational amplifiers with current feedback, conveyors, transimpedance operational amplifiers). In this thesis, active blocks of synthesis inductors (SIs) and frequency dependent negative resistors (FDNRs) are examined in detail, and the author provides novel formulas to define the basic parameters of the dual circuits. Due emphasis was placed on optimizing the basic building blocks of the second order and defining the variation of their properties caused by the addition of modern active elements. The blocks were analyzed and modified in view of their possible use in higher-order circuits. For active filters of a higher order, simulations were performed to indicate the actual sensitivity of the cascade and non-cascade ARC structures. The following phase of the research comprised mainly the designing of several filters, and this activity was further completed with the verification of the methodology for the synthesis and optimization of higher-order loss ladder filters with modern active blocks. Special attention was paid also to the methods enabling the optimization of such filters, which are invariably based on RLC prototypes. In order to verify the theoretical conclusions, the author materialized a large number of sample optimized filters and measured their parameters. The closing section of the thesis describes the use of the filters in specific applications.

This master’s thesis describes the design of the frequency filters by the help of the graph of the signal flows. There are defined by modern components like GVC (Generalized Voltage Conveyor), GCC (Generalized Current Conveyor), CF (Current Follower), DO-CF (Dual-Output Current Follower), OTA (Operational Transconductance Amplifier), BOTA (Ballanced Operational Transconductance Amplifier) and CFTA (Current Follower Transconductance Amplifier), the graphs of the signal flows, which describe their activity in the thesis. In the other part of the thesis is illustrated the procedure of the design of the frequency filters by the help of the graphs of the signal flows. For the concrete design was selected in the first case as the active component double output current follower and in the second case the CFTA. There are noted all designed circuits of the frequency filters also their characteristic equations in this thesis. The activity of the selected circuits was remitted to the analysis in the simulation program called PSpice. Because the active components, with which was engaged in the design of the filter which doesn’t exist in the real form, that is why the UCC, which is sufficing for attestation of the function of the circuit, was used for the simulation. The simulation was implemented in the frequency range 10 Hz to 10 MHz.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the synthesis and optimization of frequency analogue filters with modern active elements usable for higher frequencies. The thesis is divided into three parts, the first part deals with the problematic concerning Leap-Frog combined ARC structure. Due to a difficult design, this method is not described in a detail and used in practice, although it shows e.g. low sensitivity. Firstly, a complete analysis of individual filters was made (for and T endings) and consequently these findings were used during implementation of this method to NAF program. Finally, samples of real filters were realized (for verification of functioning and correct design). Another very interesting topic concerning filters is usage of coupled band-pass for small bandwidth, where it is necessary to solve the problems concerning ratio of building elements values, but also price, quality, size of coils, sensitivity, Q factors, coefficients etc. That is why in practice a coil is very often substituted with other equivalent lossy and lossless blocks which create ARC filters structure. The design and the possibility of usage of lossy grounded elements were described here (such as synthetic inductors, frequency dependent negative resistor). Some parts of the design are individual computer sensitivity analysis, setting of usage and quality comparison of individual lossy grounded blocks. Besides, a program for these elements was created, it is useful for a quick design and depiction of transfer characteristics. The third part deals with the usage of tuning universal filters consisting three or more operational amplifiers, which secures its universality and possibility to create different kinds of transfer characteristic. In practice, Akerberg - Mossberg and Kerwin - Huelsman - Newcomb are the most used types of filters. These were also compared with less common universal filters. In the end, the possibility of digital tuning of universal filter with the help of digital potentiometers for filters of 10th order and frequency around 1 MHz was shown.

Offshore wind turbines are mega structures that span a critical section of the lowest part of atmospheric boundary layer while experiencing significant wind shear. A detailed knowledge of the wind field through a wind farm as part of the atmospheric boundary layer is essential to design efficient farm layouts and estimate power production for grid integration. To address these needs, we present a micro-scale wind prediction model based on a large-eddy simulation paradigm. We consider actuator disk models with and without rotation to simulate the influence of turbines on the wind field and apply our computational capability to the well-known Horns Rev offshore wind farm in Denmark to estimate power production. Instead of using manufacturers power curve to estimate power production, we propose an alternative approach based on the control volume analysis of kinetic energy conservation around turbines.

Abstract:
This study primarily proposes a procedure to design a crease pattern for beetle-inspired deployable wings based on the hindwings in relatively large-sized beetles like horn beetle or chafer. First, we discuss the representative patterns of wing supports and crease lines based on previous entomological research and propose a basic geometry for the artificial wing. Next, the flat foldability and rigid foldability of the proposed crease pattern are discussed based on origami geometry. Geometrical restrictions for flat- and rigid-foldable wings are numerically expressed as a function of the design parameters, and the Newton-Raphson method is used to compute the actual solutions. Although researchers have attempted to characterize the representative crease patterns found in beetles, only flat foldability has been considered in previous research. Our proposed method enables the design of rigid-foldable wings based on beetle-inspired patterns, which is considered beneficial in designing the deployable structures.

Abstract:
Optimizing the turbine layout in a wind farm is crucial to minimize wake interactions between turbines, which can lead to a significant reduction in power generation. This work is motivated by the need to develop wake interaction models that can accurately capture the wake losses in an array of wind turbines, while remaining computationally tractable for layout optimization studies. Among existing wake interaction models, the sum of squares (SS) model has been reported to be the most accurate. However, the SS model is unsuitable for wind farm layout optimization using mathematical programming methods, as it leads to non-linear objective functions. Hence, previous work has relied on approximated power calculations for optimization studies. In this work, we propose a mechanistic linear model for wake interactions based on energy balance, with coefficients determined based on publicly available data from the Horns Rev wind farm. A series of numerical tests was conducted using test cases from the wind farm layout optimization literature. Results show that the proposed model is solvable using standard mathematical programming methods, and resulted in turbine layouts with higher efficiency than those found by previous work.

Abstract:
Resonant system design and optimization is usually supported by finite element models. Large dimensional models are often needed to achieve the desired accuracy in the representation of the vibrational behaviour at the frequency of interest. Unfortunately, large dimensional models are frequently too cumbersome to be actually useful, mainly at the optimization stage. On the other hand, the choice of the most appropriate reduction strategy and dimension for a reduced-order model is generally left to designers’ experience. Having recognized the effectiveness and spreading of the Craig Bampton reduction technique, the aim of this paper is to propose a rigorous ranking method, called Interior Mode Ranking (IMR), for the selection of the interior normal modes of the full order model to be inherited by the reduced order one. The method is aimed at finding the set of interior modes of minimum dimensions which allows achieving a desired level of accuracy of the reduced order model at a frequency of interest. The method is here applied to a resonator widely employed in industry: an ultrasonic welding bar horn, which is usually designed to operate excited in resonance. The results achieved through the application of the IMR method are compared with those yielded by other ranking techniques available in literature in order to prove its effectiveness.

Abstract:
Breast elastography has been proposed as a novel imaging modality for breast cancer detection and assessment. As pathologies are known to change tissue stiffness significantly, the idea behind elastography is using tissue stiffness as imaging contrast agent. Evidence in the literature suggests that various pathological tissues exhibit different mechanical stiffness characteristics. Therefore, in addition to the ability of detecting the presence of abnormalities, elastography is capable of pathological tissue classification. In this work, we propose a novel nonlinear (hyperelastic) breast elastography system which takes into account tissue large deformations resulting from mechanical stimulation. To idealize breast tissue, we use the well-known Veronda-Westman model as the forward problem solution in the hyperelastic parameter reconstruction process. This process involves tissue mechanical stimulation, displacement data acquisition followed by solving an inverse problem to find the hyperelastic parameters iteratively. These parameters are useful for in vivo tumor classification, image guided surgery and Virtual Reality systems development. Due to the exponential form of the Veronda-Westman function, however, this model cannot be solved using inverse-matrix techniques. Therefore, we have developed a novel technique to solve the corresponding nonlinear inverse problem. To validate the technique, we used an experimental breast tissue mimicking phantom that was made up of PVA-C (Polyvinyl Alcohol), which exhibits nonlinear mechanical behavior. Displacement data was acquired using a combination of Time Domain Cross-Correlation Estimation (TDE) and Horn-Schunck Optical Flow techniques.
