Abstract:
'Betting by the Book' details the steps taken in, and results obtained from, an examination of the processes followed, especially in Australia, of those persons who bet on thoroughbred horseracing. The work briefly describes the evolution of the practice of this form of gambling and details the extent of the activity in the Australian nation. Note is made of the obvious limited amount of attention previously given to the topic by academia. Using illustrations of the extent of the complexity and resulting uncertainty of outcome in selecting winning horses the study finds that the consequential behaviour of almost all those who bet is the adoption of a co-ordinated process of selection commonly referred to as a system. As hypothesised the study found three major categories, viz., logical, naive and superstitious. Sub-types of the three categories, devised as a part of the study, are listed and defined. Unexpectedly the work brought to attention the finding that most bettors, even those following logical systems, will, at times, adopt superstitious practices. Examples are provided of logical, yet simple, selection systems that could be beneficially adopted by those persons who would otherwise follow naive and superstitious systems of selection. Finally the study notes the considerable opportunities that exist for the education of bettors.

Fatzinger, Amy S. ""Indians in the House": Revisiting American Indians in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House Books." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195771.

Full text
Abstract:
Laura Ingalls Wilder's eight-novel Little House series, published between 1932 and 1943, is among the most acclaimed and controversial examples of modern children's literature. The narrative tells the true story of Wilder's pioneer childhood in the 1870s and 80s, including her family's encounters with American Indians. Recently some scholars have argued that Wilder's depiction of American Indians is derogatory, but examining Wilder's literary devices and contextualizing the story in the eras in which it occurred and was written about reveals a more complex portrayal of Native themes. Biographical information about Wilder suggests that she deliberately crafted her story as she recorded it; such changes afforded opportunities to emphasize her political values and critique mythology associated with America's frontier era. Analyzing the narrative in the context of frontier Kansas, and more specifically as women's frontier literature, reveals the literary uniqueness of the Little House story and highlights fallacies inherent in the premise of Manifest Destiny. As Wilder recorded her memories with the help of her well-known libertarian daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, during the Depression they often emphasized their anti-New Deal politics and cautioned readers about the dangers of buying into "big government" policies. The Little House story also reflects trends of the Golden Age of children's literature which demonstrated respect for children by removing didactic lessons from the literature; thus the Little House texts present the controversial subject of America's frontier history in a manner that allows children to draw their own conclusions about it. Finally, two television versions of the Little House story present didactic, positive lessons about American Indians on the frontier, but diminish the possibility for multiple interpretations of the events inherent in Wilder's original story. In a non-fiction article in The Missouri Ruralist in 1920, Wilder reminded her neighbors that home is "the best place for teaching many things, first and most important of which is how to think for one's self." Wilder's texts offer opportunities for discussing the complex topics associated with frontier history and encourage young readers to think critically about Native issues in the texts--opportunities seldom found in mainstream American storybooks and curriculum.

Dugas, David M. ""Six house types"." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91031.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to explore, through making. The object of this making is, as Kahn has said, house. as opposed to a house; or, the house type seen as a generative tool rather than as a singular definitive manifestation of some set of circumstantial needs. The house is the one intellectual model in architecture which can bring to thinking in design a set of questions in which dwelling in its richest sense can be studied. Questions of how dwelling is made more possible through the configurations of architecture without the necessity of introducing artificial symbolic structures which cast the physical, material reality of architectural elements into a secondary level of significance, are raised in this thesis through the making of six house types. The houses are made as a series and are seen as typological structures in which the configuration of possible ways of dwelling are sketched.

Riddy, Paula. "The representation of the country house in individual books and guides, 1720-1845." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2015. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/54463/.

Full text
Abstract:
During the eighteenth century a trend began for the publication of books devoted to the description of single country house; an early stage in the development of the country house guidebook. A survey of this largely unanalysed genre found it to be a much larger phenomenon than had previously been thought, with a peak in new publications later than has been suggested. The issue of the commission, details of production and uses and distribution of the guidebook are all previously neglected aspects of research. Analysis of these has given a greater insight into the context of production, and has shown the direct involvement of the house owner in many cases. In the secondary literature which does exist on this genre, the bias towards considering the contents of guidebook from the perspective of the tourists' reception, or as an objective document, neglects the huge potential for analysis of the sub-agendas which were involved in these publications. These less overt potential messages included a justification of the country estate in general, as well as more individual markers which related to the house owner himself. This thesis has begun to rectify the lack of research into the guidebook, and to highlight this fruitful source of material on the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. It has begun the innovative task of looking beyond guidebooks as merely a factual account of the estate, and to acknowledge that their objectivity is in question; the books were often nuanced towards given a particular impression and motivated by specific agendas. The house was represented both as an object of admiration in its own right but also used as a vehicle for the projection and display of the individual qualities and identity of the owner.

The aim of the work is to study the conceptual features of the book series of Kommersant Publishing House as an editorial product and a tool for promoting a publishing house in Yekaterinburg. The object of research in this work is a series of books by the Kommersant publishing house on the history of Yekaterinburg. The subject is the conceptual features of a series of books by Kommersant Publishing House. The master's thesis "Conceptual features of the Kommersant Publishing House book series on the history of Yekaterinburg" consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, an appendix, and a bibliographic list that includes 74 titles. In the first chapter of the study, various points of view on the definition of a serial publication are studied, the book series is characterized as a type of publication, the features of editorial training are examined, the main conceptual features of the book series are identified, and the marketing concepts of the publishing image and brand are analyzed. Based on the research work, a plan for the analysis of serial publications was compiled. In the second chapter of the dissertation, on the basis of the developed plan, a practical analysis of empirical material is carried out - a book series on the history of Yekaterinburg of the Kommersant-Ural publishing house (hereinafter - Kommersant Publishing House). As a result of practical analysis, the conceptual features of the Kommersant Publishing House book series have been identified, which make it possible to distinguish this series in a special type of serial publication, which has certain substantial, structural, compositional, artistic and marketing characteristics. It was revealed that a series of books as an editorial product can act as a tool for forming a publishing brand and create a certain image of a publishing house. The results of the study can be used by other publishers to promote their own publishing brand or to develop an exclusive book series, as well as in the process of training undergraduate and graduate students in the specialty of Publishing.

Clawson, Kevin Leon. ""Come to the Knowledge of Their Redeemer": The Book of Mormon's Message to the House of Israel." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8568.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the major themes in the Book of Mormon is the promises of the Lord to the house of Israel. Even before Lehi and his family left the promised land, Lehi and Nephi prophesied of the future scattering and gathering of Israel. After the family of Lehi arrived on the Americas, prophets continued to teach about God’s covenants with Israel. The destiny of the house of Israel was a major theme in the books of 1 and 2 Nephi, and also at the end of the Book of Mormon in the teachings of Jesus Christ, Mormon, and Moroni. In Lehi’s prophecy about the house of Israel in 1 Nephi 10, he prophesied that the future remnants of the house of Israel would be scattered and then defined how they would be gathered together again. They would do so by coming to the knowledge of their Lord and Redeemer (see 1 Nephi 10:14, emphasis added). When teaching about the house of Israel, many prophets taught similar principles as Lehi. Additionally, many prophets—including Nephi, Jacob, Alma, Samuel, Jesus Christ, Mormon, and Moroni—alluded to Lehi’s same phrase when they taught about the house of Israel during their own ministries. In the various sermons about the covenants of God with the house of Israel, several prophecies and principles were repeated. All of the major writers on the plates knew that the remnant of Israel would be scattered. They also taught that in the latter days, the gospel would go forth first to the Gentiles, who would in turn gather the scattered remnants of Israel. The instrument and tool by which they would be gathered would be the writings of the Nephite prophets – the Book of Mormon. Most important, the Gentiles and house of Israel would be gathered by coming to the knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Redeemer. The Book of Mormon prophets understood these teachings and engraved them on the plates to come forth to the world in the latter days. This thesis surveys the teachings of the prophets in the Book of Mormon about the gathering of the house of Israel. It also discusses the allusions and references to Lehi’s prophecy about how the Gentiles and house of Israel will be gathered – by coming to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, their Lord and their Redeemer.

Abstract:
The study has investigated a design intervention to the historically significant industrial precinct of Modderfontein. Modderfontein contains the first dynamite explosives factory in South Africa and is situated 20km northeast of Johannesburg. The area and its old buildings are relatively unknown. Due to the introduction of the Gautrain and the proposed development of the Modderfontein station and surrounds, the area will be densified and become more accessible. The intention of the framework proposed by the author is to activate the Main Street which contains the First Factory Manager’s house and the Dynamite Company Museum. This would be achieved by densifying the village with a series of buildings in clusters that have public, office and residential components. It is proposed that one of the clusters becomes a Book Village. The proposal will adhere to the various guidelines in a sensitive, contemporary manner.

Breckon, Ian. ""The bloodiest record in the book of time" : Amy Horne and the Indian uprising of 1857, in fact and fiction." Thesis, Bath Spa University, 2012. http://researchspace.bathspa.ac.uk/1579/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation comprises a novel and a critical study. It is an exploration of the possible literary and historical representations of the Horne narratives, a collection of documents from the 1857 Indian uprising. Amy Horne, a young woman of mixed European and Indian descent, was a survivor of the massacre at Cawnpore. Converted to Islam and married to an Indian soldier, she spent ten months in captivity with the rebel forces, before returning to British-controlled territory. She subsequently produced several different accounts of her experiences. The critical study is a detailed examination of these narratives, the contexts of their composition and their position within the contemporary historical record. My research, which has included archival reading in India and England, has uncovered both contradictions within the narratives and supporting evidence for their claims. I argue that in order to use such contentious material effectively in fiction, a full recognition of the possibilities of interpretation is vitally important. I further suggest that a close and comparative reading of the narratives, informed by an awareness of Horne’s own cultural and ethnic status within British society, reveals a dissonant relationship with the discourses of Imperial history, and allows a potentially subversive understanding of Horne’s story.

Lamson, Morgen. "Boethian Colorings in Geoffrey Chaucer's Earlier Poetry: The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls and The House of Fame." TopSCHOLAR®, 2007. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/431.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been much written on Boethius and his impact on Chaucer's greater known works, such as The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde, yet there has not been much light shone on his other works, namely The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls, and The House of Fame, which are a rich mix of medieval conventions and Boethian elements and themes. Such ideas have been explored through the lenses of his five, shorter "Boethian lyrics" - "The Former Age," "Fortune," "Truth," "Gentilesse," and "Lak of Stedfastnesse" - particularly because it is within these five poems that the metafictional narrative approach or framing of Chaucer's Boethiusinfluenced work, through narration and possible consolations, are fleshed out and brought into focus. However, the "Boethian lyrics" are not necessary in the study of the three earlier poems The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls, and The House of Fame. Using the convention of the frame tale with the dream vision in these three poems allows for the narrator to be brought to an understanding in each of these texts, strongly suggesting that this approach is something that Chaucer came across in Boethius's The Consolation of Philosophy. To merely go through and catalogue all Boethian elements as lifted directly from Consolation would accomplish nothing but a catalog of similarities. In that same vein, to analyze the "Boethian poems" would also be treading over familiar scholarly ground. In examining an intermediary group of texts as a bridge between Boethius's classical philosophy and Chaucer's courtly poetry, particularly The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls and The House of Fame, this more concretely shows the extent of Boethius's coloring injected into Chaucer's writings from early in his writing career. Through close readings and secondary outside research, I am confident that another chapter of Chaucerian scholarship, one that has rarely been explored, much less written, can be added.

Lee, Jongkyung. "'They will attach themselves to the house of Jacob' : a redactional study of the oracles concerning the nations in the Book of Isaiah 13-23." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2015. https://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:8dbe03b1-c4ca-404f-b1e8-a4a0b5bd55c7.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study argues that a series of programmatic additions were made to the oracles concerning the nations in Isa 13-23 during the late-exilic period by the same circle of writers who were responsible for Isa 40-55. These additions were made to create continuity between the ancient oracles against the nations from the Isaiah tradition and the future fate of the same nations as the late-exilic redactor(s) foresaw. The additions portray a two-sided vision concerning the nations. One group of passages (14:1-2; 14:32b; 16:1-4a; 18:7) depicts a positive turn for certain nations while the other group of passages (14:26-27; 19:16-17; 23:8-9, 11) continues to pronounce doom against the remaining nations. This double-sided vision is set out first in Isa 14 surrounding the famous taunt against the fallen tyrant. 14:1-2, before the taunt, paints the broad picture of the future return of the exiles and the attachment of the gentiles to the people of Israel. After the taunt and other sayings of YHWH against his enemies, 14:26-27 extends the sphere of the underlying theme of 14:4b-25a, namely YHWH's judgement against boastful and tyrannical power(s), to all nations and the whole earth. The two sides of this vision are then applied accordingly to the rest of the oracles concerning nations in chs 13-23. To the nations that have experienced similar disasters as the people of Israel, words of hope in line with 14:1-2 were given. To the nations that still possessed some prominence and reasons to be proud, words of doom in line with 14:26-27 were decreed. Only later in the post-exilic period, for whatever reason, be it changed international political climate or further spread of the Jewish diaspora, was the inclusive vision of 14:1-2 extended even to the nations that were not so favourably viewed by our late-exilic redactor (19:18-25; 23:15-18).

Thesis, Paris 4, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA040228.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1945 and 1960, French poetry tended to re-explore its oral roots with radio and television broadcasting, recording and live performance. Theatres developed, aside from poetical performances, some attempts for staged poems. The “question of the book” in its relation to other media turned out to be central in the poetical imagination and debates of the time: some endeavoured to rethink the communication modes of poems, to open the poetical field to a wider public, to explore the possibilities offered by new recording and sound broadcasting techniques, others tried to use the media as a poetical performance space. This dissertation, which collects many written and audiovisual archives, surveys the oralisation of French poetry between 1945 and the 1960s and attempts to reassess, through the detailed study of diverse forms of “poems outside the book”, the importance and the role of those practices in twentieth century poetry history

Main goal of the publishing house is to support, execute and spread projects of young, not yet estabilished authors and artists and thus develop the contemporary art scene. The visual identity of the publishing house is left open, it is going to be created in time by the books that are going to be published by ink. The logo is often used as a background to posters, or a stamp over photographs. I'm letting the content to speak for it's brand, not the logo. I created business cards, bookmarks, a stamp, wrapping papers that are used for parcels as well as a background for posters, and stickers. Novel Devil Novel Devil is a first book published by ink. Author of the book is Jan Smutný, recent graduate of Faculty of Fine arts in Brno. Illustration and the overall design of the book are made by me. The design is inspired by gothic books written in textura or bastarda and illustrated with woodcuts. My aim was to create a book clearly referencing this visuality, but not a „retro“ or a historicist book. I tried to create a classical book with a modern twist. That's why I chose new, modern typefaces Enigma and Lapture and the illustrations are just vector lines. Because of the theme I work only with black and and background white colour. The book was published in 200 copies.

Abstract:
The first part of this work investigates the activity of the Charles Péguy Cultural Center in Milan from its foundation in 1964 to the 1968 protests. That center was established by some young people at the end of their university path that during the Fifties and the Sixties participated to Gioventù Studentesca. In 1966 some of the members of the center Charles Péguy begun a publishing house called Jaca Book to whom is dedicated the second part of the thesis. Through the analysis of the cultural activity of Péguy Cultural Center and the articles published by its members on some periodicals this work retraces the approach they had to some of the most problematic themes of the years that prepared the Sixty-eight as the relationship with the communists, the interpretation of the Vatican II and the reception of the neo-marxist culture. Inspecting the Jaca Book catalog was possible to analyze the evolution of that themes during the years of the student protests until 1975 and their progressive development in politics, economics and theology.

Abstract:
Semi-structured, in-depth interviews with eight Swedish graphic designers and employees at publishing houses were carried out with the purpose of mapping the strategic and creative work process of producing Coffee table books and Luxury works (Swedish praktverk), as well as respondents attitudes towards these processes. The three main steps identified in the process are presented and compared to results in previous studies. The production of these books was found to be complex due to the number of people involved, the time required, the costs involved and the relatively small profit margins.  All of which increase the exposure to certain risks.  The re-spondents however found the work to be exciting, enjoyable and fulfilling. In addition to this the study discovered the inconsistency between the definition of “Coffee table book” and “Luxury work” and what was found to be the com-monly accepted understanding of these.  This applied particularly to the term “Coffee table book,” where some respondents associated the term to a lower standard of literature. The terms and definitions of these books will be dis-cussed as well as the market condition described by the respondents.

Abstract:
In 1515, the Latin School of Selestat was a famous school. His development begins with the German humanism at the XVe and XVIe centuries. We wanted to know why this institution was so attractiv. We compare it with others in Germany at this time. Then we wanted to know if the methods were teaching like during the Middle Age or if the methods were modern. Even though the term corporate inversion has been heard globally for decades, it has only become more prevalent in the United States during the past two years. This case study examines two United States companies that recently had very high profile and public corporate inversion experiences. Complicated tax laws and high tax rales have long eroded the ability of United States companies to remain competitive on a global scale. During the past two years, tax reform has been elevated to the Presidential and Congressional levei. Because these reform efforts have stalled, however, and in the constant search for ways to become more competitive and profitable, United States dorniciled companies have begun to more aggressively explore corporate inversion. This case study of Walgreens Alliance Boots and Mylan N.V., is undertaken because while the reasons to pursue a corporate inversion for both companies were very similar and done during the same time period, the internai process and final outcome were dramatically different. The other dynamic studied is the role both internai and externai politics had on these two cornpanies and how they influenced the decisions made by the executives. Lastly, the Obama Administration continues to threaten so called 'corporate America' to remain in the country through regulatory pressure, but this has not stopped companies frorn pursing corporate inversions. Legislatively, attempts at corporate tax reform, another way to encourage Untied States companies to remain, have also failed. I will not try to determine i f a corporate inversion is the right path for a company to take. I am examining how the rise o f the practice o f corporate inversions has been elevated in boardroorns, on Wall Street, in Congress and at the White House during the past two years.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis offers to study poetic practices in and out of the book from poets’ itineraries published by the Al Dante publishing house. The thesis is questioning the performance's notion, most often reduced to its scenic's dimension, but also the avant-garde's idea, too often limited to a political history which has ended. The avant-garde notion doesn't appear anymore as the element structuring the group but as an acting spectrality, leading to mix political issues - criticism of the institutions, criticism of the dominant language, challenges the places assigned by culture - with aesthetic issues. It is therefore a question of poetic translation as actualization of the political situation, and of transmediation. The stylistic approach has been gradually supplanted by a mediological approach to problematize heterogeneous practices. The Al Dante publishing house specificities allow us to see the book in a more general poetic ecosystem, where the book is no longer the only purpose, but the mediation between a process of creation and public events. So we can read this contemporary moment not only as the emergence of dominant themes, but also as a crisis of the book’s centrality and its economy. The Al Dante publishing house practices has led us to defend a theory of “editorial gesture” that cannot be reduced to the layout of manuscript or the production of a book and its marketing, but sometimes leads to the creation of books that didn’t find an editorial space. To push the boundaries of edition, to think the specificity poetry-action’s book is raising paradoxes: the disintegration of the linearity of the speeches, the reconfiguration of the page’s space, the specific adaptation of the books forms and fonts. These practices concern the book’s performative dimension. So it participates in a renewed way to a "typographic performance"

Abstract:
The possibility to study Books of Hours and Prayer Books of a determined family group like deposits of memory and personal and lineage identity is the main goal of this thesis which is centered in the analisys of thirty books of religious carácter, being them mainly books of hours and prayer books, that belonged to members of the same family group extended through time (XIVth and XVth Centuries), that is to say, the family entourage of Catherine of Cleves, Duchess of Guelders (1417-1476). This family group is articulated as an ancestral community held by strong bonds of kinship as well as a devotional community. These bonds, that articulate the identity and the culture of the individual, are by different ways projected in the books of hours, a privileged instrument of private devotion. In this way, these ones, are constituted in actual deposits and vehicles of identity and the memory of their possessor. The present study is organized in three parts which progressively advance towards the definition and characterization of the family group to which belonged Catherine of Cleves, particularly marked by the influence of the House of Burgundy, passing through the definition of the corpus of manuscripts to enter, finally, in the analysis of the differents ways that permits to consider book of hours as a locus of identity and memory (locus memoriæ)

Abstract:
This work aims to help understand the importance of bibliophilia within literary creation between 1830 and 1920. From the publicising of the bibliophile to the publishing of poetry, to study bibliophilic literary practices is to shed light on both the writing process and the resulting production of books whose materiality is meaningful. A first part studies the beginnings of a bibliophilic literary practice and its figures, such as Charles Nodier or Bibliophile Jacob, to highlight the evolution of bibliophilia from a mere collection among others to an original writing process. Torn between social experience and lyricism of the object, bibliophilia progressively defines itself in response to its own caricature. A second part considers bibliophilia as a literary and mythical source: bringing real and imaginary libraries together, bibliophilia deeply changes the relationship to the materiality of books amongst writers such as Marcel Schwob, Remy de Gourmont or Alfred Jarry. A third part takes a closer look at the book as an object and at the conditions of its production and reception. From Mallarmé and Charles Cros' experiences to those of Apollinaire and Blaise Cendars, it appears that a new type of literature needs a new type of book, the combined result of (typo)graphic experimentation and bibliophilic tradition

The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe the uniqueness of the Baobab publishing house books for pre-school children and to find out what is the opinion of parents and pre- school teachers on selected books from this publishing house, on their content and on their graphic design. In the theoretical part I describe and explain the basic concepts of the reading literacy. I also devote to the contemporary situation in the book market for children, especially pre- school children, mostly non-readers. I focus on a small alternative publishing house called Baobab, its book production for children in general, and on its awarded books. In the empirical part I interviewed parents (41 returned questionnaires altogether) about their awareness and opinion on the Baobab publishing house and on selected books published by Baobab, namely Jak zvířataspí (How Animals Sleep), Šmalcova ABECEDA (Šmalec's Alphabet) and Z domu a zahrady (From the House And the Garden). I also interviewed 7 pre- school teachers to find out about their awareness of the Baobab publishing house and about their opinion on the selected books.
