Abstract:
Abstract The first aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the trainer factor and the sex of the horse affect the heart rate (HR) of the trainer-horse pair. The second aim was to estimate the level of the trainer-horse pair’s emotions and to find the relationship of the HR between the trainer and the horse during the preliminary, natural-method training. The animals used in the study were 40 three-year-old purebred Arabian horses trained by two trainers from the Silversand Horsemanship School. Each trainer worked with 20 randomly selected horses, equally grouped by sex. The study was carried out during the first day of the training cycle. The aim was to have a horse accept a rider. The following items were subject to analysis: deconcentration, concentration, desensitizing, putting on the lungeing surcingle, and saddling. The emotional status of the horses and the trainers was evaluated based on HR variations which were measured by applying Polar S810 telemetric devices. The device produced continuous measurements with readings every 60 seconds. Two-factor analysis of variance and Pearson correlations were determined with the use of SAS software. Significance of differences between mean values was verified using Tukey’s test. The results obtained revealed that the sex of the trained horses was not an important factor in the evaluation of trainer’s emotions, despite the fact that fillies were characterized as having a more uniform HR. The trainer is very responsible for the emotions of a trained horse, especially at the beginning of training and during saddling. From a trainer’s point of view, it is important to complete the horse concentration task as quickly as possible. The lack of an emotional relationship in the trainer-horse pair during some training elements, suggests that it is not only the trainer’s experience, but mainly the trainer’s personality that determines the probable success in naturalmethod work.

Abstract:
We validated a Thoroughbred racehorse welfare index, developed initially from expert opinion, by relating it to horse behaviour recorded in a range of training stables and surveying trainers to investigate the environment and management systems for Thoroughbred racehorses. Relationships between the index scores and horse behaviour were observed. Then, an Australia-wide survey of racing industry stakeholders was conducted to identify which parameters are important for welfare in a training stable. Trainers performed well on horsemanship and health/disease aspects. Provisions for ventilation, transportation and nutrition were also scored at high levels. However, provisions for weaning, wastage, assisting horses in coping with heat stress, stabling and the education of racehorses were not as well covered, indicating a need for improvement in these welfare issues. We concluded that our Thoroughbred Racehorse welfare index is able to discriminate between trainers offering differing levels of welfare for the major issues in racehorse training stables.

Abstract:
In Sweden, the County Administrative Board (CAB) and Swedish Trotting Association (STA) both perform animal welfare inspections of the premises of trotting horse trainers. The CAB inspection checks for compliance with the legislation, and the STA inspection checks for compliance with the private ‘Trotter Health Standard’, which mainly sets the same requirements as the legislation. This study investigated the views of trainers on these inspections both as separate events and in relation to each other. A digital questionnaire was sent out to trotting horse trainers in Sweden during spring 2021, and 396 trainers responded. Descriptive and statistical analyses were used to evaluate the responses. In general, the trainers reported positive experiences of both the CAB and STA inspections, but they had consistently more positive views about the private STA inspections than the official CAB inspections. The outcome of the inspections, i.e., non-compliance or not, did not affect trainers’ perceptions of the inspections, but inspectors’ knowledge, manner, and responsiveness had a strong effect. The trainers were generally satisfied with the current control system but would like better coordination between the different inspections.

Abstract:
On investigating the gendered experiences of Western Canadian ‘ladies barrel racing’ rodeo competitors, the sportswomen we interviewed emphasized their unique bond with the horse as the distinguishing feature that made them ‘legitimate’ barrel racers compared to other rodeo cowgirls, and ‘feminine’ compared to cowboys. This paper further explores how the barrel racers studied focused on their rider–horse interaction to discursively separate themselves from other rodeo women and men. First, we examine how discourse informs the creation of subjects in the rider–horse relationship among ‘legitimate’ barrel racers. An expanded understanding of subjectification reveals three distinct, yet interrelated subject positions in barrel racing (the athlete, the team member and the trainer) that set them apart from other rodeo women. Second, the analysis uncovers their reproduction of normative femininity in the way they differentiated themselves from male horse trainers and rodeo competitors based on their distinctive rapport with the horse.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to document training strategies used by experienced trainers of the Icelandic pace racing horse. Data were obtained using a questionnaire, to which responses were received from nine trainers on the world ranking list in 250 m pace races and with a minimum of 12 years of experience of pace training. Training was commenced at an age of 5.4±1.0 years and the average time to achieve competitive condition was estimated to be 1.9±0.8 years. Horses were trained almost every day and the trainers described a variety of training methods. Interval training appeared to be common, while training at pace was performed less than twice per week. Mental aspects seemed to be a challenge for performance.

Abstract:
As a result of evolution, humanity transitioned from a nomadic to a sedentary way of life, from hunting and gathering to crop production and animal husbandry. Domestication involved capturing wild horses and adapting them to the conditions in which they were raised by humans. This resulted in a change in the treatment of horses and the perception of their emotional needs. The focus shifted to building relationships with the horse, understanding it, and treating it as a rational being. Currently, horses are seen as one of the most intelligent animals ‘cooperating’ with people. In this study, 62 horses at four equestrian centres were examined. The horses included mares, stallions and geldings between the ages of 3 and 26 years, belonging to eight breeds: Arabian, Malopolski, Hucul, Polish Half-Bred, Silesian, Polish Coldblood, Shetland pony, and Haflinger. The analysis of forms of horse training indicated that all centres used classical training methods for 100% of their horses. The trainers declared interest in natural methods, but as support for classical training. Natural methods of working with horses were applied at centres 2 and 3, where horses were ridden both for recreation and for sport. This type of training was not observed at centre 1, where horses were used only for recreational riding, or at centre 4, which dealt mainly in breeding and training of race horses. Horses at centre 3 and most of those at centre 2 took part in in Parelli’s Seven Games, Join-Up, and desensitization to unknown objects, and imprinting of foals was practiced. This indicates that horse trainers are currently applying natural methods, but are not completely giving up classical training. A study was carried out to investigate the approach of contemporary horse breeders to forms of housing and use with respect to their interest in foal imprinting, natural horsemanship, Join-Up, and desensitization to unknown objects.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective To determine incidence, effect on performance, and management practices associated with exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) in Thoroughbreds. Sample Population Medical records for 984 Thoroughbreds and a survey of trainers of horses with and without ER. Procedures Medical records for 984 Thoroughbreds stabled at a midwestern racetrack were examined to determine the incidence of ER during the 1995 racing season. A retrospective questionnaire was administered to trainers to determine management practices associated with ER in 59 Thoroughbreds with ER and 47 control Thoroughbreds in training. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine management factors associated with ER. Results ER affected 48 of 984 (4.9%) Thoroughbreds. Two-year-old females were most frequently affected, and 36 of 96 (37.5%) trainers had ≥ 1 horse with ER. Horses with ER were more likely not to race during the racing season, compared with control horses. For horses that raced, differences were not found with respect to racing performance between ER and control horses. Exertional rhambdomyolysis developed frequently in susceptible horses that had ≥ 1 day of rest prior to exercise and that galloped during exercise. Horses with ER were commonly fed > 4.5 kg of grain daily. Nervous and extremely nervous horses were 5.4 times more likely, and horses with some form of lameness were 4.2 times more likely, to have ER. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Exertional rhabdomyolysis is common in Thoroughbreds, and ER can be affected by temperament, sex, age, diet, exercise routines, and lameness. Management that minimizes excitability, particularly when tailored to each horse, may be most effective for controlling ER. (Am J Vet Res 1999;60:1562–1566)

Treiber, Kimberly Hoffer. "Glucose disposal and insulin sensitivity at rest and during exercise in trained horses adapted to different dietary energy sources and in association with laminitis in ponies." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28616.

Full text
Abstract:
Glucose is a fundamental energy source, the utilization and regulation of which impacts exercise performance and health. These studies have used modeling techniques to evaluate glucose kinetics and dynamics in equids and developed tests to evaluate the status of glucose metabolism. In Part I, 12 exercise-trained Arabians underwent insulin-modified FSIGT (with minimal model analysis) and single-injection glucose tracer (with compartmental analysis) studies at rest and during exercise to evaluate the effects of exercise on glucose kinetics and dynamics. These geldings were maintained on pasture, but adapted for 4 months to twice-daily feeding of feeds rich in sugar and starch (SS, n=6: NSC 45%, Fat 3%, NDF 24%) or fat and fiber (FF, n=6:NSC 13%, Fat 11%, NDF 45% ). Exercise increased insulin sensitivity (P = 0.070) and glucose transport (P < 0.038). Although variables were not different between FF and SS horses at rest, during exercise SS horses tended to have lower (P = 0.085) insulin sensitivity and increased (P = 0.043) glucose utilization compared to FF horses. In Part II, satisfactory proxies for minimal model parameters were developed to facilitate the evaluation of insulin sensitivity in larger populations. These proxies were applied to a population of 163 ponies and used to characterize metabolic differences between ponies predisposed to pasture laminitis (PL) from ponies not predisposed (NL). A subset of 14 ponies (7 PL, 7 NL) also underwent the FSIGT for minimal model analysis. Ponies predisposed to laminitis were found to have lower insulin sensitivity (P < 0.007) and higher insulin secretory response (P < 0.045) by both the minimal model and proxies, and higher (P < 0.001) circulating triglycerides and body condition score. Cut-point analysis for these variables was used to define a pre-laminitic metabolic syndrome with total predictive power of 78% to identifity ponies at risk for developing pasture laminitis. Increased insulin resistance and prevalence of lamintis were associated with increased non-structural carbohydrates in spring pasture. These studies demonstrate the importance of glucose regulation for exercise and animal health. When glucose regulation is altered in the case of insulin resistance, performance could be impacted and diseases such as laminitis may occur. Insulin resistance may be moderated by exercise or by avoiding sugar and starch in feeds and pasture.<br>Ph. D.

Mathis, Sean Gregory. "Galloping through millennia : a multimedia examination of horses in the modern world." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-05-3627.

Abstract:
The horse has been an integral and ubiquitous element in the development of human civilization for centuries. However, in the last 150 years, its presence in and relevance to peoples’ daily routines has waned. What previous cultures used to comprehend and appreciate, modern technology-based routines have rendered nearly obsolete. Consequently, the perception of their legacy has been diminished, their nature misunderstood, and their virtues devalued. However, their immediate presence still affects humans on a visceral level. Through a combination of three multimedia pieces and a written essay, I attempt to reveal various ways in which horses provide man with more than a means of transportation. By examining officers in Austin Police Department’s Mounted Division, an experienced horse trainer, and a licensed therapist who employs horses in her practice, I hope to dispel various misconceptions and reveal the rewards of shared company, beyond the utilitarian functions. Ideally, both parties stand to benefit from a proactive effort on behalf of the viewer to explore and better understand the connective tissue that still binds our two species.<br>text

Primeau, Marie-Douce. "Les facteurs explicatifs de la réussite de l'intégration et de la rétention des infirmières diplômées hors Québec." Thèse, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/12307.

Abstract:
A shortage of qualified nurses within Quebec has spurred the recruitment of foreign-educated nurses (IENs). Despite this increased interest, foreign-educated nurses face numerous obstacles during their integration into the workplace as evidence by the high attrition rates for both full and part-time hires throughout the Quebec healthcare system. The objective of this thesis is to explain the factors underlying the successful integration and retention of foreign-educated nurses in order to formulate recommendations for the many actors involved throughout the transitional period. The study concentrates on three key phases: 1) the bridging program (Intégration à la profession infirmière au Québec CWA0B0); 2) the probationary period following initial employment; and lastly 3) the employment retention of foreign-educated nurses. A combination of methods was leveraged to investigate the above issues, including individual interviews, group discussions, and self-administered questionnaire. The study first outlines the difficulties associated with the successful integration and retention of foreign-educated nurses in western countries followed those specific to the Quebec healthcare system. Finally, the work examines how socio-demographic characteristics, workplace characteristics, external environment, and psychosocial factors can influence the success of the integration process.

Abstract:
While writing these books, Susan had re-entered the world of psychoanalysis. The possibility of treating children with psychoanalytic methods was now much discussed at the meetings, given strong impetus by a new figure on the scene, Melanie Klein. She had established herself in Berlin but found little sympathy for her ideas there and so, in 1926, was pleased to accept an invitation from Ernest Jones to settle in London. During a previous visit to England, she had visited the Malting House School and got on well with Susan Isaacs. Susan now became an enthusiastic advocate for Kleinian ideas which put great emphasis on the role of infantile fantasies in the development of personality and psychopathology. In 1927, she engaged in a further personal psychoanalysis with Joan Riviere, an analyst herself much influenced by Melanie Klein. By the end of the 1920s Susan had become a fully trained analyst for children as well as for adults.

Abstract:
Abstract Like animals on the theatrical stage, those in behavioural experiments all too often get the better of their trainers. Lewis Thomas [160], researcher and essayist, tells of such an embarrassing episode in one of his amiable essays. He alludes first to Clever Hans, the arithmetically gifted German horse, which its master, Herr von Osten, displayed as a prodigy in 1903. The animal appeared to perform mental calculations, giving the answer to questions by tapping its hoof on the ground the correct number of times. A decade or so before, a similar phenomenon had been reported in England: a horse called Mahomet could tell the time from a watch displayed before its eyes. When a commission of psychologists examined Clever Hans it emerged that the horse was responding to minute, and as agreed by all, unconscious, movements by its master, which indicated to the sagacious animal when it was time to stop tapping.

Abstract:
The major crisis in the evolving urban form of Australian cities came in a single development: when work patterns and separation from the central activities’ districts outran walking distance. The key enabler was commuter transport, first with horse-drawn omnibuses and then with trams and suburban trains. At this point the average area of suburban lots exploded, the ‘worker’ cottage’ was eclipsed as the most numerous housing type, house sizes increased, house footprints became almost sprawling in celebration, and suburban shopping centres began to break from the long lines of shops and municipal buildings lining major road arteries to the central cities. This centripetal tendency had all manner of typological and developmental results, and Melbourne is taken as an initial example in a wider Australian study. Houses entered a newly diagonal composition and connection to their streets; new neighbourhood relations focussed on garden displays and broader individual expression in specific house designs. An equally major change, though, came as railways and a series of new tram routes dragged newer shopping and municipal precincts away from simply lining arteries to the city, setting up nodal suburban centres with new, ‘hub’ plan forms that either cut across arterial roads at right angles or clear obliques, or developed away from existing arteries altogether. Each node ‘commanded’ between three to five surrounding suburbs. Suburban nodes became both service referents and impetus-centres or sources for suburban growth, and, significantly, new centres of regional dentification and loyalty. With Federation comes a waning of central city significance, observed long ago in Graeme Davison’s Marvellous Melbourne, a suburbanism generated by and inflecting on nodes. This challenges the long-accepted picture of Australian cities having a small, towering central business district and encircled by a huge, undifferentiated suburban sprawl. This study also looks at what a nodal suburb generally comprises- its critical mass.

Abstract:
Simulation of modern technologies has an important and informative history and an inspirational heritage. Simulation was utilised early in the development of aviation. Aircraft are controlled through a coordinated series of inputs from the pilot, similar to riding a horse. The difference is that falling from a horse is not as hazardous as falling from the sky. In response to this steep learning curve, the Antoinette simulator of 1910, operated by humans responding to the trainee´s inputs, was developed. World War I´s Allied and Central Powers utilised simulation to enhance combat effectiveness. Major Lanoe Hawker VC, of the Royal Flying Corp, pioneered British military simulators with a ´Rocking Fuselage´ for firing at a moving target, with a later version in which the ´Rocking Fuselage´ was mounted on a track. Hawker´s distinguished and innovative career abruptly ended when he was shot down and killed by Manfred von Richthofen. The advent of fly-by instruments and navigation by radio-directional beacons provided an ideal opportunity for enhanced simulation. Overcoming initial reluctance, a common historical occurrence with innovative technologies, Edwin Link combined his expertise and experience from the family´s piano and organ company to produce the iconic Link Trainer. The ability to incorporate communication from a ´ground controller´ and record on a map the pilot´s course enhanced the allies´ training programmes. The advent of shipboard radar, during WWII, in the maritime realm enabled operation in low or non-existent light situations, such as fog. However, this new technology resulted in a new class of accidents – misinterpretation of screen information leading to collisions. From the 1950s onwards, simulation has been integral to the training of deck officers in radar technology. In the late-1950s. N.S. Savannah, the United States´ atomic-powered merchant ship, pioneered civilian maritime simulation of a nuclear reactor and propulsion system. During the 1960s, maritime simulation was increasingly utilised to understand operation and crew performance better. In 1976, the use of CGI at the Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF), US Merchant Marine Academy, demonstrated the value of simulation in deck officer training. Increasingly, computers: analogue, electro-mechanical and digital, drove simulation forward. Early advances enhanced the experience for the operator and monitoring by the supervisor. DARPA´s pioneering role in the integration of ´networking, instrumentation and command and control´ has been transformative. This led to ´… outcomes that were in no way predictable, through after-the-fact were understandable.´ (Thorpe 2010)The material culture of simulation is in the collections of many museums – especially the Link Trainer. Most museum-based simulators are no longer operational due to malfunctions, lack of knowledge and concern about damage by "enthusiastic" public members. However, in a twist, there is interest in simulating simulators. The ´Rocking Fuselage inspires the WW1 Aviation Heritage Trust dogfight simulator´. In recent decades, the software associated with simulation has also gained its own historical archival value. Given the complexity of modern simulators and simulations, the question arises: what will be retained in museums and archives for future generations to engage with, personally or professionally, that records the Age of Simulation?

Abstract:
Compression trains for oil and gas applications must meet, now more than ever, the requirement of versatility. Production rates and compression demands of extraction fields significantly change during their operational life; this has pushed customers to ask for equipments designed to efficiently operate all over their lifespan in order to comply with energy saving and pollution reduction needs. For this reason modular simulation codes turn out to be the best choice compared with dedicated tools for specific compression plant configuration, since they provide flexibility without losing accuracy. This paper presents the implementation, within a previously developed modular tool, of a design and off-design procedure for compression plant simulation. This tool is based on a wide library of elementary components analytically defined through equations that model their physical behaviour. For impellers, descriptive equations represent an in-house database of real stages characteristic curves, for all the other elementary components the equations arise from fundamental mechanical and thermodynamic laws. Physical properties of real gases are assessed by the use of suitable thermodynamic libraries. An implemented trust-region Gauss-Newton method, called TRESNEI, has been adopted to solve the mathematical model. Numerical calculations, performed on two real compression train arrangements, have been devoted to validate the code over design and off-design simulation mode. Results have been compared with those obtained with a pre-existing in-house tool and with experimental data. Comparisons show both a satisfactory agreement between numerical and experimental data and a perfect matching between the simulation codes.

Abstract:
Melanoma is one of the most deadly skin cancers and amounts for ∼79% of skin cancer deaths. Early detection and timely therapeutic action can reduce mortality owing to melanoma. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of our in-house skin image classification framework, trained based on a library of normal as well as pathological skin images, for automatic feature extraction and detection of melanoma. The described framework begins with active contour segmentation the skin images followed by extraction of both color and texture features from the segmented image and employs a neural network classifier to for trained identification of melanoma cases. Training and testing was conducted using a 10-fold cross validation strategy and led to 88.06% ± 1.65% accuracy in classification of melanoma images.

Abstract:
Abstract Oil and Gas remain critical components of the world's energy supply mix and there is an increasing need for maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing the environmental impact associated with hydrocarbons (1). To address the trilemma of sustainability issues, including resources depletion, energy and oil diminution as well as ecosystem degradation, Abqaiq Plants, where over 5% of global oil production is processed, has developed a novel 3D interface with machine learning (ML) applications that drives a multi-objective optimization of crude oil stabilizing process to improve efficiency and GHG while maximizing economic and environmental sustainability (1). Machine Learning (ML) Model was developed and trained to understand optimal operating ranges of crude oil stabilization units and identify abnormalities and performance degradation. Bearing in mind the operation of world's largest array of stabilization columns, a tool was developed and embedded in a 3D platform to identify optimal feed distribution and energy usage in real-time. A second advanced data analytics tool was developed in-house for shell and tube (S&amp;T) heat exchanger to predict leaks in real time to avoid product contamination and was embedded within the same platform. This 3D Visualization platform is used to display analysis outcome in a user-friendly display. Utilizing in-house expertise in designing tools to achieve objective in an accelerated manner as part of an agile process to support high performance and scalability.

Abstract:
Abstract To determine the optimal trimaran configuration for best calm-water transportation efficiency, a Deep Neural Network (DNN) is trained with sufficient computational results provided by, as an example, an in-house developed potential-flow code called Multi-hull Simple-source Panel Method (MSPM). Even though the computational method is extremely efficient in accurately establishing the mapping relation between the key design parameters governing the trimaran configuration problem and the resulting calm-water transportation cost, the modeling efforts are non-trivial since the number of geometric and configuration parameters in a typical situation is large. In this work, we demonstrate how the “Big Data” of computational results can be effectively utilized in training a DNN. An optimal trimaran configuration solution within a specified design space, subject to realistic range constraints, can be quickly determined in a minimal amount of time with the DNN. A demonstrative case study is provided for illustration.
