Abstract Results from an experiment to measure the drop shapes using a 2D video disdrometer (2DVD) are reported. Under calm conditions, drops were generated from a hose located on a bridge 80 m above ground, this height being sufficient to allow drop oscillations to reach a steady state. The disdrometer data had to be carefully processed so as to eliminate the drops mismatched by the instrument and to remove the system spreading function. The total number of drops analyzed was around 115 000. Their axis ratio distributions were obtained for diameters ranging from 1.5 to 9 mm. The mean axis rat

Abstract:
In Europe and other advanced medical communities, medical gases are generally supplied by pipeline, with cylinders available as back up. Large hospitals usually have oxygen supplied and stored in liquid form, since one volume of it provides 840 volumes of gaseous oxygen at 15◦C. It is stored in a secure Vacuum Insulated Evaporator (VIE) on the hospital site. The arrangement is shown in Figure 22.1. The VIE consists of an insulated container, the inner layer of which is made of stainless steel, the outer of which is made of carbon steel. The liquid oxygen is stored in the inner container at about−160◦C (lower than the critical temperature of−118◦C) at a pressure of between 700 and 1200 kPa. There is a vapour withdrawal line at the top of the VIE, from which oxygen vapour can go via a restrictor to a superheater, where the gas is heated towards ambient temperature. Where demand exceeds supply from this route, there is also a liquid withdrawal line from the bottom of the VIE, from which liquid oxygen can be withdrawn; the liquid can be made to join the vapour line downstream of the restrictor and pass either through the superheater or back to the top of the VIE. The liquid can also be made to pass through an evaporator before joining the vapour line. After passing through the superheater, the oxygen vapour is passed through a series of pressure regulators to drop the pressure down to the distribution pipeline pressure of 410 kPa. It should be remembered that no insulation is perfect and there is a pressure relief valve on top of the VIE in case lack of demand and gradual temperature rise results in a pressure build up in the container. There is a filling port and there is usually considerable wastage in filling the VIE; the delivery hose needs to be cooled to below the critical temperature, using the tanker liquid oxygen itself to cool the delivery pipe. The whole VIE device is mounted on a hinged weighing scale and is situated outside the hospital building, protected by a caged enclosure, which also houses two banks of reserve cylinders.

Abstract:
Nancy Bennitt, like most farm women in the South, is hardworking and leads a simple life close to home. She and her husband James have finally risen from tenant farmers to owners of a small farm, earning additional income through lodging travellers, making clothes, and transporting students to the nearby university at New Hope Chapel Hill. But the war comes to her-she loses both sons and her son-in-law to the war. And when the generals finally make peace, they do it at the drop-leaf table of her farmhouse on the Hillsborough road near Durham Station. Other women, left at home by their conscripted husbands and sons, now find themselves having to plant and harvest, as well as manage farms and stores. Many go to work at cotton or woolen mills. Others despair, beset by hunger, disease, and vengeful Unionist soldiers or Confederate neighbors. Women of the plantation class have few practical skills, and the privation reaches even them. Black enslaved women suffer worst of all-especially those whose husbands have run away to the Union lines and who are punished in reprisal. Women riot for food against speculators in Raleigh and Salisbury. Talk of glory fades, and many now implore their soldier husbands to desert and return to their families.

It provides additional materials for families to support children in fire prevention, including a home project. Sections include emphasis on fire as a tool, not a toy; reporting a fire, extinguishers, evacuation, and the stop-drop-roll technique. Also discussed is how to review the child’s fire-safety knowledge and provide suggestions to apply what has been learned. An important addition addresses how to prepare a babysitter or other caregiver with all necessary fire safety information.

Abstract:
Having looked at the external and internal challenges facing the move towards more sustainable tourism, and the impacts of tourism, you should now be wondering how sustainability in tourism can be turned into more than an ideal. Perhaps one of the most obvious way to achieve this is simply to regulate the sector. After all regulation worked for the ozone layer: scientists raised the alarm in the 1970s that a hole was appearing in the atmosphere’s ozone layer, caused by Ozone Depleting Substances or ODS (most notably CFCs) and resulting in adverse effects on human health and the environment. By 1987 the Montreal Protocol was established to phase out the use of ODS, and by June 2015, all countries in the United Nations, the Cook Islands, Holy See, Niue and the supranational European Union had ratified the original Protocol. The result was a 98% drop in ODS since ratification, and the hole is expected to have fully repaired itself by 2050. A significant achievement in terms of international cooperation, based on scientific advice.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the legislative process in Parliament. A wide but fragile alliance sought to strengthen the bill but was caught between the desire to move the policy in a more radical direction and the fear that the government would drop the bill that, after all, attracted little electoral support. The FOI bill reached Parliament following two highly regarded committee investigations in House of Commons and Lords. The government faced an increasingly assertive and expert alliance of Parliamentarians in both houses seeking a ‘stronger’ law, supported by campaigns by the national media. The government foresaw a difficult passage (Straw 2012). The government veto power was weakened and clauses made for better balancing tests when decisions to release were even. An ‘ultimate’ confrontation was foreseen for the final House of Lords stage when a cross-party grouping of Peers appeared set to hold out for a much stronger piece of legislation. However, amid rumours FOI would be dropped and behind-the-scenes deals, the alliance in the House of Lords was forced to choose between losing the bill and having a slightly improved Act on the statute books. The FOI bill was then finally subject to an abrupt, curtailed final debate in the Commons.

Abstract:
A study has been performed to simulate the impact experienced on hose support straps during end hose separations on railroad freight cars. Analysis and comparison of test results of different hose straps show that the elasticity of the hose strap determines the reaction force generated by a certain impact. Under the same impact, a stiffer hose strap sustains a larger reaction force. Unlike the current requirement of AAR S-4006, the relation between the elasticity of the hose strap and its reaction force is not linear. Additionally, for a certain impact, the reaction force of the hose strap is

Abstract The most critical factors for a switching valve in a lightweight, portable hydraulic systems are low pressure drop, low power consumption, fast response time, and small size and weight. In this paper, experimentally validated models are proposed for switching energy required by two valve architectures with minimum pressure drop (ball and butterfly valves). The orifice in a hydraulic valve creates a pressure drop across the valve that needs to be minimized especially for low-pressure passive applications. The ideal switching valve for a hydraulic device is one with an opening diameter

Abstract Hydraulic systems that are operated outdoors during winter can be exposed to extreme low temperatures. Low temperature thickening of the hydraulic fluid can increase power consumption, cause pump cavitation, and stall system actuation. In this study, the response time and power consumption of a hydraulic vehicle restraint system that is used outdoors year-round was evaluated at low temperatures. This safety device incorporated proximity switches that triggered a machine “fault” when the time delay between the locked and unlocked positions exceeded 8 seconds. Straight- and multi-grade

During the coalescence of a drop with a planar interface, a hole is generated in a microscopic film that separates the drop from the interface. An experimental study has been performed to investigate the time dependent behavior of the radius of the hole generated during coalescence. The study consisted of placing drops of various sizes and physical properties on a planar interface. The coalescence process was recorded from underneath the interface with the aid of a high speed digital camera and a prism. The experiment captured two separate processes, film rupture and the closing of the hole. D

A Free Fall Lifeboat (FFLB) which is evacuating from a damaged host in storm conditions must to be able to safely run away from the host. For a safe evacuation, the FFLB must first of all avoid irregular motion (“log dive”), and secondly resurface at a sufficient distance away from host (headway) to be able to run away. The design standard [1] requires a controlled motion trajectory for the FFLB in waves. A drop simulator for random drops of FFLBs from a floating host in storm conditions, intact or damaged has been developed. Time histories of the host motions are generated and random drops of

The first-mile, last-mile problem is a significant deterrent for potential transit riders, especially in suburban neighborhoods with low density. Transit agencies have typically sought to solve this problem by adding parking spaces near transit stations and adding stops to connect riders to fixed-route transit. However, these measures are often only short-term solutions. In the last few years, transit agencies have tested whether new mobility services, such as ridehailing, ridesharing, and microtransit, can offer fast, reliable connections to and from transit stations. However, there is limite

Checking your blood sugar daily may not help you manage your type 2 diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes, it’s important to keep the amount of glucose, or sugar, in your blood at a healthy level. Many patients check their blood sugar at home each day. Patients place a drop of blood from their fingertip onto a test strip; then they insert the strip into a home glucose meter. This test measures your blood sugar level at that moment. People who use insulin check their blood sugar often so that they know how much insulin to take. But if you don’t use insulin, recent research shows that daily bloo
